I really, really, really wanted to love this. I was ready to scream into the universe that Marion Blackwood had done it again. That she has given me a new meaning to life and has granted me salvation from the pits of a reading slump.
Do not misunderstand. There are some A+ scenes in this book that made me silently scream. What went wrong for me were the connections and relationships between the characters. It was lacking something, like a harmony that I had previously loved in The Oncoming Storm . The character relationships didn't feel as substantial and lacked emotional connection for me. When there is a betrayal, I am not shocked or hurt. It's not a jaw dropping moment, because I expected it. I was more shocked that the characters (especially Kenna) never saw it coming. Kenna is a spy, and blackmails people as a side hustle. She has seen the depravity and lies of so many people so when she naively believes and trusts people, it doesn't make sense. The math ain't mathing!!
Kenna is trying to solve too many problems at once. First to find the missing magical Dagger of Orias, to then make sure the King isn't assassinated with said dagger, to avoid giving this dagger to any of the elf prince's, to pay off her family's debtors and finally to pay her way out of indentured servitude. There are too many issues and not enough time. Kenna doesn't have the power or the resources to solve all these problems and she certainly doesn't have anyone she can trust to ask for help. Danger lurks at every misstep, because if she stumbles she's dead.
In order to blackmail people, Kenna uses her power to walk through walls. Firstly, what a unique and interesting power. Imagine the shenanigans and havoc The Oncoming Storm would be reeking if she had that skill (even though she basically does but that's not the point). Kenna has the perfect gift for a thief but she uses it to collect information in order to blackmail people for money. I wonder how she keeps track of everyone she blackmails because from what I gather, its quite a long list. Her downfall starts when she chooses the wrong target to steal from. If she were to blackmail someone, she would have had more preparation done and known the victim more intimately but as a thief her targets are the wrong kind. I would expect a little more crossover in skills from blackmailer to thief but i'll chalk this up to her running out of time and being desperate.
There's something about the Prince of Shadows. Maybe it's the flowing locks or his need for everyone to beg that makes me want to punch him in the face just to see his shock and to watch him bleed. Kenna agrees with me but this isn't the book where she gets her revenge. Kenna is just constantly scrambling to stay alive, and stay ahead of all her schemes but with too much to worry about she puts herself last.
Kenna had no one in her corner. Her friends and family are self-absorbed arseholes that don't care about Kenna in any way (with the exception of Felix). I understand Kenna's deliberate blinders with her friends and family, because if she called them out and addressed their bad behaviour, she would be confronted with the fact that she is alone in the world, with no support or love. She was holding onto all these relationships with the skin of her teeth and everyone's bullshit is slowly chipping away at her spirit. Kenna is exhausted and under so much stress and her family/friends are just another pressure point that she doesn't need. This culminates in solving her family's debt problem at the expanse of her freedom. Her family are not grateful, nor regretful of their actions. They expect she will do what they ask with no questions or context and use her feelings of being wanted to manipulate her. I hate her family so much. Every single member is trash with no redeeming qualities. Ergh.
Kenna's 'best friend' is equally manipulative that is hidden with pretty words and fishing for compliments. She uses her friends feelings in a way to manipulate them in centring her comfortability rather than having confronting conversations. I am no psychiatrist but girlie is a narcissist. No question. I hope she gets her just desserts because she doesn't deserve Kenna's friendship. Kenna would move the world for the people she cares about and her family/friends know this and use it against her. I just want Kenna to drop them all and find a better support system but she won't until she is confronted with their duplicate nature.
I was rooting for Kenna. I wanted her to show the world her power, her strength and her cunning. Unfortunately she had too much shit going on that made her reactive rather than proactive. There is only so much she can handle before it becomes too much, and that meant things that she should have noticed fell through the cracks. I know Kenna will rise to the occasion given time but it sucks watching her go through it and not have the desired results at the end.
I'm foaming at the mouth at the potential of this series and I cannot wait for the rest of them.
Would I recommend this book?
I would recommend this book but I would probably tell you to read her first series The Oncoming Storm .

Yeah I would. Marion Blackwood is a favourite author that I would go back to again, and again.

Wow! A brand new world with new characters, different from the author’s Oncoming Storm series but just as memorable and delightful to follow! Our favorite traits of Marion’s writing are all here and it’s a pleasure to return to her worlds!
Worldbuilding as always is top notch. It’s a new world but just as intricate as her old ones, with small details adding just the right amount of spice. I want to learn more and explore more!
The MC is a treat. As with all Marion’s characters, she’s complex with her own moral code but with a presentation that sets her apart from the others. You’ll find similar traits that you loved in Storm from her first series but this character is an entirely new being that manifests quite different. I look forward to learning more about her!

I could not take this book seriously. Kenna and the Prince of Shadows are terrible villains. They basically rub their hands together, while going muahaha and laughing evil-y. I could not relate in any way to Kenna and found her to be unlikable in an uninteresting way. I'm glad to be done with this book.

Now let’s get started on the book. Let me tell you, if you were a fan of The Oncoming Storm series you’re gonna love this one too. It’s a very quick paced story and nice length (around 300 pages in the font size I read it as an epub) which I can very much appreciate after reading a few books from over 700-800 pages long.
In the story we follow our MC while she schemes, fights, lies and blackmails herself out of every situation… or at least tries to without getting in trouble. When you think you know what’s going… you don’t. There’s always a new twist or turn in the story you don’t expect and that keeps you reading.
I love the way Marion introduces so many characters in only one story but still keeps it so clear who is who and what character traits they have. This is a problem I often see in books with many characters, it just gets overwhelming. And I love that this is not the case for this story.
And not to spoil anything but there’s just that one little piece of sh*t that I just did not trust… I was waiting for a certain moment to come and when that came… I was just screaming ‘I f*cking knew it’. The fact that - next to hightlighting everything - the sentences ‘Nope, I’m done trusting this one’ and ‘I f*cking knew it’ were the ones I wrote, made me so happy I figured at least one thing out.
I highly recommend reading this book and the upcoming books of this series. You just feel all the emotions, the world is beautifully written, characters were on point and I can’t wait to get to know them better.

I didn’t love this like I did The Oncoming Storm but it was really good. Mordren is 🔥 The interaction between him and Kenna is awesome. Now, everyone can agree that Prince Edrec is an asshole but why do I still like him??🤨🤷🏻♀️😂 I really do for some odd reason. So, I was not surprised by Evander’s betrayal. I had this gut feeling something was off with him. I wasn’t even mad either! She was playing him and betraying him too so 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ they played each other and it was rather awesome! The Void too! Wtf lmao 😂 that I didn’t expect at all and I’m not even mad about that. Loved it. 4 stars!

An absolutely mind blowing story with an extremely badass set of characters! Marion did it, AGAIN! I was completely hooked and addicted to the story since chapter one, where I got introduced to another badass female character, which in only a few pages managed to grip my heart and complete admiration! Kenna works for Edric, the Prince of the Court of Stone. She’s an half-elf spy for the prince but she intends to buy the freedom from him and on her journey to do so, she faces lots of difficulties.
This was SO GOOD!!! A story of intrigue, magic, betrayal and action. And I sense an enemies to lovers here! Which gets me to my other favorite character, Mordren Darkbringer, the Prince of Shadows. He’s fierce, dark, hot and that’s all you need to know! The interactions between him and Kenna were pretty intense and full of tension and I cannot wait to see more of them in the next book! They quickly managed to become two of my all time favorite characters!!
Go and read this book y’all! It’s quick paced and action filled and it will BLOW YOUR MIND! This author does an amazing job, EVERY SINGLE TIME!! She’s now one of my favorites and every time I read something she writes, it just makes me admire her more! Her writing style is just so beautiful and enjoyable to read; you will fly through all her books.I finished this one in one sitting, that’s how addictive it was! And I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel!

Another masterpiece from Ms Blackwood! After reading her Oncoming Storm series, I had very high expectations for this book, and it certainly lived up to them!
Kenna is a morally gray character, and Ms Blackwood excels at writing morally gray characters - not to mention they're usually my favourite characters, the ones not afraid to break the rules, to change the game to suit themselves. Kenna is devious and manipulative, and I look forward to her next adventure!

First of all, I wanna thank Marion for providing me with an ARC of this book! Let's get in to my honest review of this book.
Once again, Marion Blackwood transports us to a magical world, full of elves, humans, and most important, dark, brooding, handsome princes. We follow Kenna, a half-elf spy for the Stone Court and prince, who occasionally likes to blackmail rich people in the hope she one day will have enough money to buy her own freedom to exit the spy life and court. But when the Prince of Shadows catches her in the act, he forces her to spy for him instead.
I don't know how Marion does it, but once again she has created this amazing main character that is just so relatable and interesting. And not only is the main character awesome, she also managed to introduce us to a large cast that all served their own purpose, without it being to crowded or confusing.
This book was an awesome read, and I can't wait to see where Kenna's schemes will take her next!

Wow. Okay, with this book, the traitor spy, Marion Blackwood has cemented herself as one of my favourite authors.
This book, the first in her latest series, is freaking fantastic. It literally ticks every box for me. Kick ass assassin, royalty, intrigue, mystery, adventure…this book literally has it all.
I fell head over heals in love with the main character, Kenna is one of my favourites ever. She is strong, she’s an assassin. She has a magic ability, which I’ll leave for you to discover.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a new series to follow, make it this one.

I really liked this book. It’s refreshing to read something about elves and not Fae.
Kenna is a bad ass FMC. I love how she knows she’s strong, capable to handle dangerous situations and is quick to help others; even though no one helps her.
The tension she has with the Prince of Shadows… come on. I hope they at least kiss in the next book.
Great pacing, well written, good world building. An overall 4⭐️ read.

Who doesn’t love a book which opens with secret treasure troves, blackmail, ransoms and well tailored outfits?
This one from Marion doesn’t disappoint. It has twists throughout, so you won’t want to put it down, and a sinfully delicious Prince you can’t wait to get to know a lot better.
The only disappointment will come when you realize you have to wait for the next one…

Fun read
I loved her last set of books and so far I've enjoyed this one. Kenna, a half elf with the capacity to walk thru walls ends up being a spy for the prince of shadows. What could possibly go wrong? Ya, she's a spy for the prince of stone. But she's being blackmailed by mordren, prince of shadows. Whats a girl to do. Put on a bold front and move forward. And do not cower in front of him because he loves the leverage. I'm looking forward to book 2.

This was such a fun, fast-paced first instalment in a new fantasy series by Marion Blackwood. I really liked how, instead of a lot of world-building and descriptive writing, the story started in the middle of the protagonist blackmailing someone. It had me instantly hooked! However, don't worry if you're looking for that world-builing element because the author weaves that in seamlessly throughout the story.
Kenna was a really cool character to follow and I love how strong she remains regardless of what life throws at her. And there is a possible romance between her and a certain Prince that I'm expecting in book two that I just cannot wait for!!!
If you're itching for some fantasy and don't want something slow, then pick this up and be swept away in a cool new world!

As always master Marion and her cast of colorful characters did not disappoint. I read Traitor Spy in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. There’s so many twists and turns in this one that just when I thought I had it all figured out my magic carpet was ripped out from under me and my stomach did that dippy thing like when you free fall or there’s airplane turbulence. You know the dippy thing I’m talking about? Yeah, well this wild adventure did that and it was perfect!
Kenna is a fantastically ambitious MC. I would describe her as a fire cracker with a stealth mode who just can’t catch a break. Between a certain bossy prince and our driven MC is some serious tension that is not only entertaining but chili pepper hot and only heats up as they navigate a complicated game of cat and cat (nothing mousy about these two). And Evander…all I can say without spoiling it is: Good grief.
There’s a drunk coffee shop scene that’s equal parts steamy, hilarious, embarrassing and heart aching. How does she do it?! How does Marion make me feel allllll the feels in just a few sentences?! Her talent never ceases to amaze me.
Anyways, if you’re on the fence do the right thing and climb down so you can read this book on proper solid ground; the schemes and twists of Traitor Spy will give you the surprise and thrill you seek you fence climber. And if you’re looking for a completed series to read while you wait for Traitor Spy to be released on August 30th, go check out Ms Blackwoods Oncoming Storm series. I’ve read it an embarrassing amount of times because it’s just that good.

A new story, a new and different (anti) - heroine, new tasks, schemes and quests, new strange and fun characters and a whole new world to explore. Marion Blackwood takes you on a brand new journey and if you were a fan of the Oncoming Storm you are in for a ride. It's different, but I got sucked right into this world and I did root for Kenna, bit my nails and laughed out loud at times. I can't wait for the next book and I hope the series lasts at least as long as the Oncoming Storm books since I'm ready to commit.

Ok, so lets start with saying I am an great fan of this authors previous series, so I have to admit my expectations were very very high, and this book was good, but I honestly expected more. Soon after, I realized this author plays the long game (insert happy villanous smile), meaning she knows how to write a series without a hitch in any of upcoming books and as inconsequential events in this book paved way for the next one The Wicked Betrayal, I decided to set aside my frustration only after immediately reading the wicked betrayal and now I AM SOO HAPPY, and came to the conclusion that sorry but my expectations went up again for the next book, book 3 ( fingers crossed ) waiting for release in December.
Please read this awesome series and don't stop with book one, trust me, the games have only begun.

I personally think he is my FAV character right now since he tells Kenna how it is and is very honest with her. Also their chemistry is 👏🏽💋. If only he had short hair and we had some from his POV.

This new fantasy novel was such an enjoyable rollercoaster which I finished in one sitting.
From the start I was immediately captivated into the unique and fast paced storyline which held many twists and turns along with multiple aspects that came into play ranging from gangs, magic, betrayal, secret treasure troves, tension, blackmail, spying, action, ransoms and elf courts.
The writing flowed beautifully being a simple yet intricate writing style. The author manages to so effortlessly describe this new magical world and it’s individual courts seamlessly.
There were many characters involved however they’re all well developed and individually play vital roles within the story. At first, the heroine, Kenna, seemed to be selfish and quite abrupt with her actions which could cause some readers to need to warm up to her but the development she undergoes is worth it. I personally didn’t mind those attributes and really enjoyed her character especially the witty, sarcastic yet logical parts. I also loved the message behind this story through her character which is to put yourself first! The side characters were constructive however I couldn’t form any solid connections to them yet.
The romance involved was minimal. I definitely would’ve liked more however I know how this author loves slow burn romance so I’ll need to wait. There is no solid love interested here however I’m definitely intrigued to read more about the relationship between Kenna and a certain elf Prince of Shadows because he immediately won my heart as soon as he came into the story during the first couple of chapters.
I really appreciated how by the end, everything came together and made sense. This novel could be read as a standalone however I’m very excited to read more of Kenna’s journey in the next instalment soon!
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel being the first instalment within a new fantasy series by this talented author! HIGHLY RECOMMEND to fantasy lovers!

The Traitor Spy is the first in Marion Blackwood's new series, Court of Elves. The Traitor Spy has incredible world building, captivating characters and a thrilling storyline. I finished this book in a day, I didn't want to put it down.
Marion Blackwood's writing is exceptional, and the story roped me in and kept me hooked right from the start. Our main character, Kenna, is a total badass with the ability to walk through walls. She is also ambitious and determined, frequently having to reign in the bossy and dominant side of her in order to be respectful towards the Elf Princes.
The story was amazing, I love Kenna's tenacity. I laughed out loud in several spots, and I felt for Kenna in others. I didn't see the twist coming, perhaps I am completely ignorant and just enjoy rooting for love, but I enjoyed the surprise. The Prince of Shadows is easily one of my favourite characters, because honestly how could he not be! He is powerful and infuriating, and I cannot wait to read the next books in this series to see how his relationship with Kenna pans out.
There actually wasn't anything I disliked about this book. Here are some of my favourite things about it:
- Prince of Shadows, obviously
- That coffee shop scene!!
- The writing is captivating and descriptive
- The introduction of characters was flawless, making it easy to keep track of the different players in the game
- The Elf abilities are so varied (worldwalking, walking through walls, inflicting pain without touch, mindreading...!)
- MC is resourceful, compassionate and very intelligent
- The complexity of the scheming and the intricacies of the plans are mind blowing
If you're on the fence about reading this, please get right off it! The Traitor Spy is a fantastic read, and I highly recommend it. It will be available on August 30th! Plot
If you want a book filled with action, this is the perfect one for you. I never felt like the story was lacking and all of the plot twists and betrayals only added to the book’s fast paced experience. For a fantasy, the Blackwood does a great job blending fighting scenes, politics, and romance together while also managing to highlight the main plotline of Kenna trying to earn back her freedom from the Prince of Stone.
I think my only complaint with the plot was the addition of her family and their constant need for money. I was hoping they would tie into the main plot in a bigger way than they actually were. The plot was hinting at a lot of untold emotional abuses that I had hoped would be explored more. Of course, there’s always the next book in the series so maybe it’ll be mentioned then?
Worldbuilding
I appreciated the simplicity of the world and the many descriptions but most attempts at explaining the magic or the culture of the courts felt a little clumsy. Being one book, we were only able to get a close look at the Court of Trees and the Court of Stone. I know how hard it is to give world information without info dumping so I won’t be too critical of the details here but I do wish we got a little more info on the other courts and how exactly magic works for everyone.
Again, this is only the first book so I expect that more courts and their customs will be incorporated into the plotline as well as more about the magic system and how everyone uses their powers.
Characters
I liked Kenna a lot. She clearly wasn’t perfect – she had an inability to see past her need to belong particularly with her family – and the book was able to deliver on some badass fighting scenes while managing her insecurities and anxieties as a character. I also liked Evander. I like that he in a way represents and highlights those anxieties in a way that also shows her strengths. I even liked the Void and Mordren.
As for the other characters, their personalities were lacking. I’m not that mad about it though because I think their presence was important to Kenna growing as a person and assassin

Not going to lie here. I wasn’t a fan of the elves in the first Oncoming Storm book. After a solid diet of fantasy elves in my teens and 20s, the pointy-eared types just don’t float my boat like they used to.
So, given that the Traitor Spy is set in a world of elves, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book half as much as I did. I certainly wasn’t expecting to give it 5 stars.
This book reminds me of fast-paced, page-turning 1980s fantasy, where a quest is solved in one book. I devoured this book. The main character, her problems and the world just drew me in.
Kenna is a half-elf indentured to a powerful elvish house, the Court of Stone. She’s a spy for the Prince with a sidegig: she blackmails people into paying her not to reveal their secrets, squirreling away money to buy her freedom. So, when the Prince of Stone tasks all his spies with locating a powerful artefact, Kenna soon finds herself in over her head. After a sidegig goes wrong, the Prince of Shadows (big smexy Loki vibes here) gives her an ultimatum: spy on her own court for him or the Prince of Stone will learn of her illegal activities.
Kenna is smart, sassy, fun and doesn’t do dumb plot-device things. The magic system and its limitations are nicely thought out, the secondary characters well rounded. The action and pace is perfect, and as for Kenna’s interactions with the Prince of Shadows...HAND ME A FAN already.
There’s a plot twist at the end that I simply did NOT see coming. I’ll keep this spoiler-free, but Marion, you got me with that one! I wasn’t expecting that person to be the one.
So go read this book already. You won’t be sorry.

Although she is treated well at her home, Kenna strives to be in control of her own life. With that being said, she often sneaks out of the house and blackmails individuals for ransom.
The Court of Stone learns that a very dangerous weapon that could potentially lead to war amongst the courts has fallen into the hands of someone from one of the other courts. The prince sends spies, including Kenna, out to find the weapon before something terrible happens.
Whilst this is occurring, Kenna still ventures into peoples homes and blackmails. Enter Mordren Darkbringer, the beautiful but dangerous, Prince of the Court of Shadows. In exchange for keeping information about Kenna’s illegal activities a secret, Mordren blackmails Kenna into going against her court and spying for him.
The Traitor Spy, in my opinion, was such a fun read. There were so many plot twists and betrayals that made this an extremely enjoyable and entertaining read. I found myself getting lost in the world and falling in love with the characters. I genuinely could not put this book down! I am so excited to start the second book!

Well hot damn, Marion Blackwood does it again. Traitor Spy far exceeded my expectations! I knew going into it that a kickass heroine would be in store but didn’t expect the level of complexity to the scheming, it was borderline mind blowing by the end of the book. And that’s just with the espionage aspect, let’s not forget the intricate sword fighting, and detailed world building that really helped set the scene, especially when it came to Kenna using her magical ability. I also really liked that Kenna doesn’t “break” easily under all the pressure she’s under, not only with spying but with family struggles, her love life, and of course the terrifying and intimidating Elven Princes. To me it seemed like every time she came up against a challenge or possible set back it only made her stronger and more determined (and more ballsy). A character that continues to persevere is so satisfying to rally behind. I can’t wait for the next book so I can see what Kenna faces next and find out what’s in store as she challenges a certain deviously alluring prince along the way.

This enchanting tale was full to the brim of excitement, court politics and secrets, with a touch of seduction and danger to keep you on your toes. Kenna, our spy, is sassy, smart and has a thirst for freedom. I love her personality and scheming, not to mention her determination to get her way. The world building was exceptional and the plot kept me guessing. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author will take this series and, hopefully, we'll see some more romance in the coming books.

A big thank you to Marion who provided me with an ARC!
I really enjoyed this book! I loved how many characters were involved and how many different aspects came into play in regards to the plot and the mysteries of this world that Marion has created.
I didn’t particularly warm up to the MC until about halfway through the book; I found her quite abrupt and selfish at times but I was so engaged with the character development which was awesome and one of the things I enjoyed most about this book! After that 50% mark I flew through the book and I’m so excited to see more of the Void and our sexy Prince of Shadows in the next book! *swoooon*
The only loss of a star was, for me, the descriptions of everything going on without actually having too much going on event wise seemed to drag on a little bit in a few parts. Other than that though, I loved this book!

Marion has done it yet again! She's created an intricate new world with a cast of colourful characters. Some characters you find easy to like/love whereas there are a select few who you could just punch...in the face... with a shovel! *cough* void *cough*
Anyway, as with Marion's previous series, The Oncoming Storm, the main character Kenna, is a young, sassy, lovable rogue who shows us just enough vulnerability that you can't help but want to cheer her on.
Kenna doesn't have it as easy as it may seem, so she has to lie, scheme, cheat, blackmail and occasionally whip out a sword (that she does in fact know how to use!) to make her point/get what she wants.
As always, Marion's writing had me glued from the the last page, right through to the very end. I am very much looking forward to seeing what mischief Kenna ends up in, in the next book 😍
