When a wildland fire lands Scott McGregor in the burn unit and sends his career up in smoke, a decade-old emergency contact card brings his former college lover, Robby Hammond, to his hospital bed. After six months of hospitals and rehab, Scott starts a new life as owner of the Mountain Shadows Campground. Maybe learning to run a bed and breakfast—not to mention dealing with the permanent residents—will keep him from making Robby the center of his universe. Again.

Leaving San Francisco to take a part-time position as a law enforcement ranger makes no sense at this stage of his life, but after Scott’s critical burns, Robby moves to Flagstaff anyway—to take up residence at Mountain Shadows—which has nothing to do with his long-buried feelings for his ex. Despite the white-hot attraction that still burns between them, too much is at stake for Robby to take that chance. Again.

Torn apart a dozen years ago by an unlimited ability to cause each other pain, each man believes the relationship door is firmly closed, but when life brings them back together, Scott is still the irresistible force to Robby’s immovable object, and where there’s smoke…there’s fire.

I get that the idea is a series of twenty books by four authors, but this is an installment not a story. It fails dramatically in making me want to buy nineteen other books!

At the end of the 'book' I've got a better image of the neighbour than of either of the main characters. There's no tension, little explanation, no story here, they're not real enough for me to care. Doesn't help that it starts half-way through their story so everything in the blurb has already happened. There's the groundplans of the house, a list of neighbours who'll presumably make up the rest of the series and a little low impact (easily bundled off) drama thrown in. They actually seem to sleep for a good portion of this short story.

The end is a cliffhanger; to me the outcome seems predictable and instead of a gasp of shock-horror my reaction was annoyance.

I just don't care.

I have mixed feelings on this story. Didn't realize that it was going to be so short. It could have been a really nice story and I guess if it continues it might be. There are so many unanswered questions and not enough time to really understand the characters at all. The biggest problem that I have though is it doesn't really end. I hate reading a story where you have to read the next one in order to find out the answers. This one definitely ends that way. Would have never seen that ending coming. Now I am just mad and like WTH.

Pulp Friction 2014, what an interesting concept! Four authors (Laura Harner, Havan Fellows, Lee Brazil and Tom Webb) writing standalone series with inter-related characters that crossover between the stories. The first installment is Firestorm by Laura Harner, who is a new author to me. I really enjoyed this one! Scott and Robby are former lovers, reunited after 12 years, so it doesn’t take long for things to get h-a-w-t! It’s not a long read and it ends with a cliffhanger, but that’s kind of the idea. I’m hooked and anxiously awaiting the next one!!

Pulp Friction 2014, woohoo!! Now set in Flagstaff, Arizona but the format is the same as last year. Tom Webb, Laura Harner, Lee Brazil and Havan Fellows are writing 5 rounds of 4 books, the first of which is this one, Firestorm. 4 stars and 4 ♥♥♥♥ from me.

Firefighter Scott McGregor is injured in a fire and ends up in a burns unit with his career as a firefighter over. Thanks to an old contact card in Scott's pocket, former college lover Robby Hammond is contacted and immediately rides to the rescue even though it was 10 years ago that he and Scott were lovers. He visits Scott at the burns unit, and after 6 months of treatment, hospitals and rehab, Scott buys the Mountain Shadows Campground in Flagstaff from the owners who wish to sell and have a very good reason for doing so...their son Danny was very badly injured in the same fire that destroyed Scott's career. Robby of course knows nothing of Scott's life now and vice versa, but Robby drives Scott to the campground in deep snow, and stays around long enough to know that yes, Scott is still the one for him even after all this time. Scott can't really manage to do a lot because of the injury to his leg but he tries, he tries very hard to do everything himself, but Robby ends up having to look after Scott and deal with all the numerous jobs that need doing. One night they hear a woman screaming, and I'll leave this one here....PF fans rejoice, a new series has begun!!

I was beyond ecstatic when I found out that the incredible team of Laura Harner, Lee Brazil, Havan Fellows, and T.A. Webb were going to continue their Pulp Friction success and write one for 2014! On that note, in my opinion, each series by each author can be read as a stand alone, however I found it much more enjoyable to read each book by the different authors as they were released since they tie together and I didn't want to miss anything. 'Firestorm' is the very first in the group and as usual, Ms. Harner batted it out of the ballpark.

Scott McGregor is a firefighter who was injured in one of the horrific summer wildfires in Arizona and has spent the past six months in a burn unit in Albuquerque. The fact that I live in Arizona and had a front row seat to this horror last summer simply made Scott much more real to me sooner. In an odd quirk of fate, when Scott was admitted to the hospital, he had an old emergency contact card indicating Robby Hammond, Scott's college roommate and former lover whom Scott hasn't seen in twelve years. It might have been twelve years, but these two still have serious sparks flying, in the way only this author can write.

Scott risked his life to save a member of his firefighting team, and while Danny is alive he was burnt worse than Scott, and is in a facility in Phoenix. Danny's parents owned a family resort in Flagstaff and they convinced Scott to take it over, as they wanted to move down to be closer to their son. They tried to give it to him, but he negotiated a price, sight unseen, and having finally been discharged from the hospital, Robby drove him to Mountain Shadows, in the middle of a blizzard. Scott was assuming (bad boy) that this was a family resort, one step up from a campground. It has fourteen cabins, three of which are on a yearly lease, and the main lodge. Well, when he and Robby get there, what Scott has purchased is a gorgeous, elegant resort.

Within ten minutes of arriving at the lodge, Scott is dozing, hyped up on pain meds, and Robbie has just met the first of the three permanent residents, Professor Dagfiner (Finn) Lorenson, who has a Colt .45 pointed in his face. Just a misunderstanding as Finn is looking out for everything until the new owner gets there. After Scott wakes up, he and Robbie are having some dinner when they hear a woman screaming. Saving another tenant, Jillian, and her little girl, Maddie, from an abusive live-in, makes the excitement of their first day top-notch! Welcome to Flagstaff!

Now, I have absolutely NO idea where this Pulp Friction, four series, twenty books, four different authors, is going, but I'm dying to get to the bottom of Scott and Robby. No pun intended. Scott has always known that Robby is the one for him, but when circumstances caused their break-up all those years ago, contact between the two has been significantly limited. It's easy to tell there is one hell of a story line coming up ahead in just this 'Fighting Fire' series. Robby is a park police ranger and he must feel something for Scott since he changed jobs to work in Flagstaff, but there's some history there. Hmm.

This author has set the stage for the coming books. Scott and Robby are the focus of Laura Harner's series. The other tenants in the cabins, Finn, Rowen, and a new guy who just moved here from back East with a gorgeous Shelby muscle car, will be featured in the works by Lee, Havan, and Tom. Oh, I can't wait! But, for this first book - I loved it, and as expected, Ms. Harner left me on a cliffhanger. I'm going to be stalking her for the next story. *grins*

This book is the first book for Pulp Fiction 2014. The full series will be twenty books alternating between four authors - Laura Harner (who has this first book), Havan Fellows, Lee Brazil and Tom Webb.

So yes, it does feel like it is short, almost like it is the first chapters of a longer book with the end missing. Yes, it does end abruptly. Yes, the ending is a shocker - totally unexpected!

There's a line in this book "The kiss felt like a promise." The same can be said for Firestorm, it's such a tantalising teaser of things to come and is a great start to the series.

Scott has been badly injured in a fire and his emergency contact details hadn't been updated since college so the hospital called his old boyfriend Robby whom he hadn't seen or heard from in years. The story starts as Robby drives Scott home from hospital after his months of rehabilitation. Home is a 'camp ground' that Scott has bought cheaply from the parent's of the colleague he rescued from the fire in which he was seriously burned. Scott is a hero!

Scott is in for a surprise when he sees his 'camp ground'. It is a lot more than he expected, with a huge home for Scott and a number of other homes on the site. There are a few permanent residents as well as the seasonal visitors. In this story, trouble is caused by one of the residents which gives insight into the type of person Scott is as he tries to save the day - kind, selfless, an all-round nice guy.

Robby has found work in the area (he's a ranger) but intends to live in town. He doesn't plan on rekindling his relationship with Scott. But this doesn't stop them from having some sizzling encounters. I loved the way Scott's scarred injuries, although causing him pain, didn't cause him to shy away from exposing his burned areas and taking the lead in approaching Robby.

Oh, but that ending! What's going on? I need to know more! When is the next book coming out?!

My tip - if you don't like cliffhangers, wait at least for the first round to be released. If you like anticipation then go for it now!

1.0 Irritated Star

I'm irritated because I learned more about the characters in this "book" from the Amazon "book" blurb than from reading the "book" itself. I'm irritated because there was almost no character development and definitely NO HEA/HFN. And lastly, I'm irritated because this "book" was more like the first few chapters of a novel. Fighting Fire is not a "series" because I consider a series to be individual stories/books that are related to the whole. I'm going to characterize this as a "serial," for lack of better term.

BUYERS BEWARE: These are not individual stories but rather chapters of a book, released in increments. That sucks, IMO, because - whether intentional or not - it feels like an underhanded marketing ploy. These books are going for $2.99 a pop and there are four books in this serial; that's $11.96 for the novel (or $8.97 if you take advantage of Firestorm (Fighting Fire #1) being offered as a freebie for a limited time). Paying $11.96 for a novel is not outside of my realm of possibility but the author/publisher should be upfront about it! Don't string me along and play me for a fool. I'm not stupid; don't make the mistake of treating me like I am.

Bottom line: Nuh-uh.

I started reading this immediately after reading what is available of the Willow Springs Ranch series because the most recent book of that series brings the characters to the Mountain Shadows Campground. I was curious about Scott and Robby since they always seemed so tense around one another. Can you say 'unresolved sexual tension'? I knew you could. So, I bought all the available novella's in the Fighting Fire series.

Scott and Robby were roommates and lovers in college. Their relationship ended, not on a bad note, from what I can gather, but none the less they did not see each other for more than 10 years; until Scott gets seriously injured while fighting a fire.

It's obvious that they are not over one another. More so on Scott's side. Robby is in a bit of denial. He's telling himself that he is just there to help Scott get back on his feet, but he's not exactly in a hurry to leave, either. Oh, Robby is also king of the mixed signal. I'm surprised Scott doesn't develop whiplash.

We'll see where these two go. They've definitely got a lot to work on both individually and together. I'm glad the next couple books are available because it ended with a bit of a surprise..

I read last years Pulp Friction so I went in knowing what to expect for the series. There are four authors - Laura Harner, Lee Brazil (who brings one of his characters from Pulp Friction 2013 to Pulp Friction 2014), Havan Fellows, and Tom Webb.

These stories exist in the same time/area, so expect the characters to crossover at some point.

Don't expect fast resolutions for the stories because that's not how this works. Each author brings his/her own style of writing to the table, so you're not going to see the exact same thing throughout.

For those looking for instant gratification, you won't find that here. What you will find is a slow building story that takes place over the year, and a resolution that doesn't come till the end. If that's not the kind of story you like, then it might behoove you to wait until the end of the year when you can get the series all at once.

Pulp Friction is back, keeping standards high, we meet Scott and Rob,past lovers united after 12 years of no contact.

Scott is a firefighter severely injured in a fire, that has left him with a badly damaged leg. His old college love, Rob, a park ranger, returns to his side to help him settle into his new home. A resort with cabins, bed/breakfast, and some permanent residents. Scott acquired these, when the the parents of a young firefighter Scott saved , insisted that he take them as gratitude for his heroism.

Will Scott and Rob be able to overcome what parted them and the past 12 years, "stay tuned, same time, same Bat channel!". Who do we get to meet next? I will be in anticipation hell till the next installment.

I give it an Arizona resort full of stars

Did not realise until I'd purchased the book that this was an ongoing serial, not a series. Colour me annoyed. I hate this kind of publishing. It feels greedy.

25/11/14: Finished the rest of the story. The problem with this particular type of storytelling for me is that, while I enjoyed this series and TA Webb's, I couldn't finish the other two authors' books which means some of the storylines hinted at in Webb's and Harner's books will never be resolved.

Mmmm not really what I was expecting. Only part of a story, and no back-story as to how Scott got hurt. Kinda missed the mark for me. Not keen to buy all the others just to find out what happens :(

Book: Fire Storm #1
Series: Pulp Friction 2014
Author: LE Harner
Publisher: Hot Corner Press
Genre: Thriller
Rated Mature M/M

The Paranormal Romance Guild has just finished honoring the authors as well as the The Pulp Friction Series for their Best of 2013 reads. Each of the four authors Lee Brazil, Havan Fellows, Laura Harner and Tom Webb were each nominated for Best Series for their individual storyline and the Team was honored with a Special Recognition Award for an ingenious new idea in writing Four authors four different series twenty books that somehow merge their characters and story line and end with a resounding grand finale !

We leave the boys in Atlanta this year and start 2014 out west in Arizona. Laura Harner has the task of starting this new saga and has written a strong first contender to hook we the reader in. We now will get a short story every 15 days rotating these four authors giving us their own individual storyline and characters….including ahhh the ever frustrating cliff hanger. This will keep us busy until Christmas as we did last year ending in a seriously written grande finale.

Laura, I must say you knocked this out of the park. I read this on a plane this morning flying from Tampa to Arizona and couldn’t move until the last word. You wove a spellbinding story of firefighter Scott McGregor trapped and burned seriously in a forest fire. Fate would have it, that his go to medical card still had his ex- lovers Robby Hammond’s name on it. It has been over 10 years that they have seen each other, but as Robby helps Scott though the pain and agony of rehab and healing, there might be a flicker there…...

Scott had also saved the life of a young man in that fire. He was the son of a well to do family. The parents ask Scott to take over their property in the hills of Arizona, almost giving it to him so grateful for their sons life. They need this as well as they know it will be cared for while they remain to help their son heal as well in the city. The place is called the Mountain Shadows campground. Robby drives him up after his release from rehab, since Scott is still not strong enough to make the trip alone. . Scott is surprised when he find he does not have run down cabins and an old bunk houses but a beautiful home to make a Bed and Breakfast and adjoining cabins some of which are already rented.

Laura no stranger to hot romance sets the no no no to yes yes yes simmering slowly thru the pages….The spark between them might just re kindle. Each young man has will have many descisions to make and I cannot wait to see who will join this story in 2 weeks….Stay tuned, I sure will be waiting..

First of all, I didn't like coming into the story after Scott left the hospital. After reading the blurb, I was hoping we got to see how Robby felt getting the call and what their first interactions were like after 12 years. We didn't get any of that info. Instead, we enter the story when Scott is already on his way home and Robby is inexplicably the one caring for him and they apparently haven't had any practical conversations during his recovery.

That was another thing. I had a hard time suspending disbelief on this one. After 12 years, your emergency contact is your college boyfriend? Not your mom, who is apparently still in your life? Or ANYONE actively in your life in the last few years? Was Scott a firefighter in college? How did Robby's name get on the emergency contact form in the first place? As far as I know, you fill out your emergency paperwork after you start a job; it doesn't just follow you around at every place of employment. Although, maybe it's in hospital records? Even so, a firefighter should have up to date emergency info since they work in a dangerous profession. I work a desk job, and we have to update our emergency contact info annually. Again, I just couldn't get over the practicalities of the premise.

Other things that bothered me:
-
- The blurb does not say so, but this book is not stand-alone. It just segues into the next book and leaves a lot of unresolved plot points to get the reader to continue the series, which I don't think I will.
- Lack of backstory. Again, maybe this is in later books, but

So, overall, I am giving out one of my rare one stars on this one. I didn't hate it, but I also didn't like it. Having said that, I realize that it may just not be my cup of tea. To other's reading this review, I suggest reading the sample. If it grabs you, go for it. If it doesn't, give it a pass. I got it for free on Amazon, so I didn't start with the sample. And I just can't make myself leave a book unfinished, especially one so short. So I read this one all the way through.

This is a second read for review and preparation for the final book in December.

November 21, 2014

What is not to love about this? First we have four great authors each writing their own series but all intermingled! Beware, if you don't know or don't like/understand what pulp fiction or pulp serials are, do some research before starting. I've seen some very bad and angry reviews complaining about the very things this series is about. Those readers clearly didn't understand what these authors are doing in homage to pulps. Maybe there should have been a little blurb about it but since the books are clearly labeled those readers weren't paying attention. Also, read the books in the order the authors suggest. You can just read each authors individual series in order but to get the full impact read them in the order they are listed.

I cannot remember how I found this but if I do remember correctly at about the third round of this series I stopped and then spent the next week or so devouring Pulp Friction 2013 before coming back to Pulp Friction 2014. You really don't have to but there are connections that add a little something extra if you read that series first.

As this is the first in the series we are introduced to Scott, the new owner of Mountain Shadows, as he first arrives to the campground. With him is his old college lover Robbie Hammond. They've been apart for twelve years and Scott's injury has brought them back together. We aren't given the reason for that split and Robbie is keeping secrets. That however is part of the fun of this series, what happens next?

We also meet Lizzie and her daughter Maddie who were given room and board for light work around the lodge and campground by the previous owners. There are a couple of domestic abuse scenes involving Lizzie's alcoholic, abusive and freeloading boyfriend that might bother some readers. We also find that Lizzie has some secrets of her own.

I love the idea behind this series and what these authors are trying to do. This first installment has angst, drama, secrets and a couple of really sexy scenes between Robbie and Scott. I'm on to the next!

This is the first book of this year’s Pulp Friction Series. If you haven’t read last years, let me explain a little. Pulp Friction is four authors each writing five books plus collaborating on a big finale that the characters interact with each other. Each author’s series can stand alone but you get to know all the characters better if you read them all in order. I loved last year’s collection and can’t wait to see what these fabulous authors came up with this year.
Book 1 is finally out and we start with Laura Harner’s Firestorm.
Firestorm is about Scott McGregor, a firefighter that was injured in a fire. His contact list was old and hadn’t been updated in over twelve years so he was surprised to see his ex-lover form college, Robby Hammond. Scott, no longer able to fight fires, bought what he thought was a small cabin and bed and Breakfast outside Flagstaff to start a new life.
Robbie was surprised to be called when Scott was injured, but not only did he go visit Scott, go back to take him to his new home he purchased, but he took a part-time job in Flag as well.

This book sets up not only the Fighting Fire Series, but the concept for the others as well. I really liked this story a lot. I loved Scott and how he is such a do-gooder and helping others without thinking of himself first. I loved the conflict between Robby and Scott. I can’t wait to see what transpires.
There was plenty of action and suspense in this story as well as establishing the characters and settings. I was on pins and needles through the whole story. I couldn’t help but wonder what the other stories might be and who they are about. I also can’t wait to see how things develop between Scott and Robbie.

If you like serial type stories, short stories with lots of action and hot sex, Firefighters, Park rangers, mysterious men and one heck of a surprise ending you must read this!!

Oh. My. God. I’ve heard a ton about this Pulp Friction group of writers that I finally had to give in and read this year’s set of serials. Firestorm is the first of 2014, Pulp Friction 2014 to be exact. And if this is what I have to look forward to, I may go crazy before the end of the fifth round.

Firestorm is the first in Laura Harner’s Fighting Fire series from Pulp Friction 2014 (I’ll explain Pulp Friction more in depth at the end of this review). This is the first book from Harner that I’ve read. It won’t be the last. This story is exciting, emotional, angsty, and heart-wrenching.

3.5 stars--I loved last year's Pulp Friction series, but didn't really know what I was getting into when I started. I didn't realize there were four authors and that the stories all shared a common place and time frame. I read each author separately and only found the second author by accident. Even later, I stumbled across the third and fourth. Although I really enjoyed the individual stories, it would have been so much more satisfying to read them all in their intended order. I was determined to do it right in 2014. With the full list in hand, I just started.

This first story is about Scott and Robby. It began a bit slowly and started with only a brief peek at a pertinent past. I found that to be a little off putting, but by the end, I was hooked.

My plan is to read all 20+ books without break. It'll be a fun week or so--one I've been looking forward to since last year!

OK - the beginning of a new Pulp Friction session - and it leaves whole loads of possibilities - *huge grin*

I 'got' the sympathy Scott needed, and I was so glad Robbie was there to help! A life-altering scenario is hard at the best of times, but Rob was a welcome support! Until the end, when it was a WTF!! Until then, I thought Robbie was the best of friends (with benefits??), but I was absolutely stupefied by the ending! (Panic??)

Hopefully, Rob will sort himself out (?) and Scotty will accept everything (?)
[That's the pleasure involved in this sort of 'series' stories - one never knows how the four authors will resolve the relationships - but I'm hoping a Scott/Rob one is a HEA!!]

Pulp Friction 2014, here we go again!

Laura Harner, Lee Brazil, Havan Fellows and Tom Webb are writing five new rounds of four books and this time they are set in Flagstaff, Arizona.

In the first book Firestorm we meet Scott and Rob, past lovers united after 12 years. After his leg was damaged in a fire Scott can’t work as a firefighter anymore. His old college love Rob helps him settle into his new home, a resort with cabins and some permanent residents. After some initial difficulties they try to overcome what parted them 12 years ago.

There is plenty of action and suspense in this story as well as introducing the characters and settings. I can’t wait to read the next book in the current round.

The Pulp Friction authors have started the adventure once more! Firestorm (Fighting Fire#1) is the first in Laura Harner's series for the Pulp Friction 2014 interconnected storyline and its off to a terrific start. Comprised off just six chapters, Harner dumps the reader immediately into Scott's new life as he travels with Robby from the burn unit in Albuquerque where he was recently discharged to the Mountain Shadows campground where he is to begin his new life...

Laura Harner starts Pulp Friction 2014 with a bang. Her series within a series collection is Fighting Fire, starring Scott MacGregor, who is horribly burned while fighting a wildfire. His emergency contact card still lists his college boyfriend Robby Hammond, and Robby drops everything to come to the hospital. These two guys have never stopped caring for each other, but is it still love? This story explores whether two men separated by time and distance can or should get back together or is it possible to just be friends? Scott buys the Mountain Shadows campground, which gives us the location for the rest of the Pulp Friction 2014 stories.

Sadly, I feel I have no other choice than to reduce my ratings for all Laura Harner books. The evidence of plagiarism for some of her books appears incontrovertible and she has even apologized for it. This, for me, taints her entire body of work. I can no longer trust the integrity of any of her writing.

This in no way reflects upon the integrity or quality of any author with whom she collaborated.

I feel like this started after all the good stuff happened and just.... more crap happened that didn't have anything to do with anything... Robbie was kind of a douche and Scotty just let him keep coming and going... I didn't see the appeal...It was just meh for me
