When Tylandover, prince of Evolin, from 'Fireheart' says that he has a burning in his heart, which is tearing him apart, take him seriously. Tyland possesses fire magic which he desperately needs to learn how to control. When he is rescued from a fight, he ends up having sex with Sully, the man who rescued him, a law enforcement officer called a Rider, but he can't imagine the extent to which his life will change because of it.

Even though Riders have a violent reputation, Sully is a decent man. He's rough and aggressive and sometimes fierce, but he has a good heart. He's loyal to his superiors and determined to enforce the law, but doesn't always agree with the policies set forth. He tends to see things more broadly than some of the other Riders. He's gained a great deal of respect from his fellow officers, which is why he's summoned by the king. Fate has a strange sense of humor at times. When he arrives at the castle, he's shocked to find that the young man he had an encounter with the night before and thought he'd never see again, ends up being the king's son, whom he is charged to mold into a real man. Even though Sully is reluctant to continue their sexual relationship, the attraction proves to be too strong, necessitating all types of subterfuge on their part, and causing Sully a great deal of guilt as he struggles with his loyalties and the question of duty versus love.

Tyland is a master manipulator in an adorable, sexy body. He knew what he was doing when he decided he wanted Sully, but made it seem like the other way around. Tyland also manipulates his father into thinking he is a bumbling, inept fool, while in secret, he is anything but. He has to hide his sexual preferences which are also forbidden by his father's laws. At first, he sees Sully as a way of rebelling and getting what he wants at the same time. Like Sully, he never dreams that his father, of all people, would throw them together. Tyland is discouraged and unhappy about Sully's attempts to cool their sexual ardor, but finds himself falling deeper in love with Sully all the time. Even when he's forced to marry, he still wants Sully who can't resist him either. When Tyland accidentally reveals his magical gift, Sully knows immediately that his lover, and everyone around him, is in danger unless he learns to control it. Sully takes him to an old friend he thinks will be able to help him. Even with this, things continue in a downward spiral when they discover that their secret isn't a secret at all.

The story is intriguing, although it leaves many questions unanswered. Judging by the way it ends, I'm hoping there is a sequel which will continue this interesting story. It has the potential for being an exciting and entertaining series. I like the characters and am cheering for them to have a happy ending. If you like kings, princes, castles, heroes, bad guys, and love destined to be, I recommend that you read this tale. Thanks, Kay, for the alluring look into the lives of Tyland and Sully.

A Joyfully Jay review.

I think this is another case of a great idea being hampered by the length of the book. I loved the setup for this book and even the conflict/climax was dramatic and entertaining, but there just felt like there was so much missing from this story that I could never fully invest in it. The characters were a little flat because there wasn’t really any time devoted to developing them before everything fell apart around them and consequently when everything did go to hell, I wasn’t nearly as concerned about their fates as I might have been otherwise.

As a Rider, Sully lives a life of freedom so when he’s ordered to become the tutor of a spoiled prince, his life becomes a lot more restricted and complicated. Especially when the prince he’s teaching is the very boy he had a quickie with in a neighboring village. Tylan may be a prince but he lives in a world where magic is forbidden and he has the gift of fire within him. As they get closer together, their feelings for each other grow but their love is forbidden. What will they do when Tylan is promised to another and there’s no future for them?

I’m going to admit, I ended up starting Fire King without realizing it was the third book in this series so I’m a little biased now on what happens. As it is, I found Tylan to be an extremely spoiled brat. It was hard to understand him since this book is only in Sully’s POV. Now, I didn’t really like Sully as a character either. I found him to be cruel and obnoxious BUT I really liked the spark between these two and I can feel the connection between them. I loved that their feelings are so deep that they’re literally willing to give up everything and die for one another.

My biggest issue was how much sex there was, though. Also, I don’t have any problems with rough sex but wow, these boys did not know what lube was or even spit for that matter. The first few times they had sex, there’s absolutely nothing there to slick the way! I don’t see how Tylan wasn’t torn out!

In the end, this was a nice little story. The characters as individuals aren’t appealing but I liked them together as a couple. I already know what happens to them but I’m looking forward to seeing their journey along the way. If you’re looking for a quick fantasy story with a lot of sex, definitely give this a go!

I didn't get how one minute Sully was having a good fuck and the next, he was in love...
I didn't really see any steam or chemistry between the lovers.
There was no proper explanation for why he wanted people to think that he couldn't ride. It's one thing to hide your powers and another to have the disdain of your father for appearing weak when you are not. Considering the way he was seeking approval and love from Sully at the beginning, it seemed out of character for him to not try to please his father or at least disprove his father's notions of weakness.

Fireheart brings us into a fantasy world of kings, princes, magic, and elite lawkeepers called the Riders. Here we meet Sully, a feared and respected Rider who finds himself getting up close and personal with a young man he inadvertently saves from being beaten up in a place where he should never have been in the first place. The young man soon turns out to be someone he least expected.

Tylan, is the only son of the ruling king of Evolin. A kingdom ruled with an iron fist by a king whom many considered to be powerful but closed-minded. When he and Sully meet, sparks not only flew, but some bit of magic as well.

Nothing much was said about the evolution of the relationship between the two men. It happened. Sully was reluctant to pursue it. Tylan never let off of his interest in the man. As events beyond their control gradually unfolded, the two were finding it harder and harder to keep their affair a secret. Things get complicated when Tylan has to act the man and prince and marry a princess. This wrecks havoc over his tentative control over his magic. This control was tentative at best and this lack of control seemed to take a sidestep only when in the presence of Sully. Otherwise, it was total lack of control. As the magic involved fire, this could prove very dangerous. Not to mention: magic is outlawed in Evolin.

I liked the premise of the story. There were a lot of things that had the potential to make the tale bigger and stronger. Maybe this is because this is just the first book? It is a novella after all and after searching, I did find out that this is just the first of the series. That means there are more to be revealed.

I am a curious animal, so should there be a sequel of two, I would love it if the author would be so kind as to answer to my questions.

One: the Riders. I know they are the elite lawkeepers but how are they chosen? Are they born to be Riders? What type of training do they go through? And many other questions that should serve as a back story for this group.

Second: Tylan's magic. How? What part of his DNA set this in him and in the other magically gifted people in this world? I really want to know more about the hows and whys to the magic.

Okay, so maybe I am a bit too curious, but this is just how I am, especially when it comes to fantasy. It is my favorite genre after all - other than MM. So yes, I am not shy to ask questions. I just hope the author does find the time to answer them.

Overall, for a novella that is just the beginning of a larger arc, Fireheart is an intriguing and curious fantasy that kept me curious and wondering even after I reached the end.

This is a fun fantasy read.  Full of magic, secrets, illicit love, and teenage rebellion.

There were so many things that I really liked about this book.  It had so much potential to be a great book.  The issue that I had was that it was too short.  There were too many threads that were left open and the ending was abrupt and demands another book.

Sully is a Rider, this world’s version of an elite soldier/cop.  He eats, sleeps, parties, and sneaks in his sexual liaisons all while living alongside his fellow Riders.  While most of them turn a blind eye towards his flexible sexuality, relationships between men are frowned upon.  When Sully hooks up with a young man in a fast and furious moment of passion he doesn’t expect to ever see him again.

Tylan is a prince who has led a very sheltered and limited life.  His father is controlling and refuses to see anything that doesn’t go along with what he wants.  Tylan has become accustomed to hiding his true self from everyone around him so when he meets Sully, the first person who really sees him, falling in love is easy.  The problems come from a prince and a soldier trying to be together, add in the huge secret that Tylan is hiding and their chances at a happy ending look grim.

The only thing that kept this book from being either a YA or a coming of age story was that it was told from the older character’s point of view.

A fun and sexy story that has so much left to be told.  I enjoyed the characters as well as the adventure and magic aspects of this world.  I am excited to read the next book and see what happens to our beautiful prince and his soldier and all of the magic they will make together.

This is an okay read but I just couldn't get the 'feel' of Tylan and Sully's characters. The king, the bride even Gannon were just words on paper. I finished it though and has started Fallen, it's sequel. Might be better-i hope.
