This was a fun, fast paced read.

I liked the storyline and was interested in the world building & all the different characters. I would have enjoyed a bit more enemies to lovers/slow burn. It definitely felt more insta-love to me, but without enough character depth (& interactions) to justify it.

I saw this compared to Handmaids Tales and I will say that the FMC definitely pissed me off as much as June does with her on the spot, mostly dumb decisions. There were also some "plot/character twists" which I did see coming, but I also think when you read a lot, it just gets easier to guess these things.

If you want a quick read in a new fantasy world, give it a try!

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this story. I was pulled into the story straight away and the intriguing plot kept my attention. The author's writing style was very relatable and the storytelling was compelling. The characters felt very multi-dimensional. They were unique and distinct with great development. I loved the tropes in this book. Overall, this was a fun and fast-paced story. If you are a fan of romantasy, dragons, or shifters then you should pick this one up!

I quit at 87%

The second half of the book isn't as well developed as the first half. The world building is good at the start but about 60% in the plot seems rushed and the author is stating things that are not supported in the writing. The main characters' regard for each other is out if the blue, because up to that point the male lead's inner monologues were all about using her not caring about what happened to her, and her's were all about her resentment at him for treating her the same way the King's men were by taking her choices away and using her with no regard. At one point the characters even contradict the plot itself: in the scene where he brands her with the bond he says he doesn't know she's going to burn up or live and he's surprised, but then later it's made out as if he knew all along she would survive and that she was his mate even though that's not what the scene indicated which made it very clear he was just doing it to use her and didn't know or care if she'd live.

Then there's the female lead: I thought she would be different, and she kind of starts out that way but then it's like a bait and switch where she turns on a dime from being resentful at what he's done to her and not wanting to be put in danger and have her choices taken away, to suddenly thinking he's the cat's meow. I guess she's not different, just another weak-willed easily swayed twat.

The second half was undeveloped enough that in my opinion he was no better than the the villains that forced her into being a broodmare -- he did pretty much the same thing, forced her into a situation and gave her no choices, using her for his own gain. The plot never developed us out of that, it just did a sudden flip of the switch miraculous emotional transformation. It was so bad that when they get to the scene in the volcano all I could do is roll my eyes and at that point I just basically quit, I was done. I was frustrated at how suddenly the female's feelings changed and I wasn't identifying with their supposed connection so that scene just ended up feeling too over dramatic for me.

The author's premise, the world building, the first half of the plot were good, but it was as if the author just gave up fleshing it out and rushed the rest, telling readers things that weren't supported, even contradicting the picture painted in the first half. It could have gone there if they'd just been willing to put in the time and the detail, but they didn't. So in the end about 60% of the way through I got disappointed and that just grew until I was so disaffected I quit at 87%. I just didn't like him enough to put up with the overdramatic claptrap.

You really wanna know what I think??? Kiera, I need a book 2, please, and fast!!!

This was such a great read that I can read this book multiple times and never tire of it. I really enjoyed Onya and seeing her grow on her journey and how fierce and brave she is. Everything that she went through would have broken someone, but Onya kept fighting for herself and against societal expectations.

I would love to see what happens next for Onya and Dre. I dreaded getting to the end because I didn't want the story to end and I also want to know what happened to some characters.

This is a must read!!!!

This is a story of a dying world and a girl fighting for her place in it. Since the Dragon King was killed centuries ago the life has slowly been draining from everything, crops, animals, and even many women are going barren. The last dragon has been imprisoned by the cruel human king, and his execution will mean the death of everything.

While I overall really liked this story it needed some parts flushed out more for it to make sense. It is a standalone but would have been better as a trilogy. Many things are barely touched at and needed to have more to it, like the FMC connection to Freya. While other things like the magical bond between the Dragon Prince and the FMC didn't flow. It isn't fate or soulmates. It isn't that he loved or was even drawn to her. He was taking his anger out on her because she was there, and instead of burning alive, she ended up bonding to him. Then he was impressed that she was strong enough to live through it, so he used it to force her into danger while she had no clue what was going on. Suddenly, the lust that was created by the bond is love. She will have a normal human life span while he continues to live for centuries and find another human to bond with like he has in the past. She is just his current human consort. To finish it all this 18 year old girl that is thought to be barren has intercourse for the first time and then within 24 hours during the big battle she feels a "quickening" in her belly and knows she is pregnant.
Too many questions weren't answered or were just answered very badly. This could have been a great story.

This book was a good mix of many troupes. Selection books, lost royalty books, dragons and a sprinkle of some 🔥. Although I wanted to shake some sense in the FMC a few times I always wanted to know what happened next! This book is a good 4.6⭐️ for me! Hope you enjoy it too!

Interesting mix of romance tropes that play together seamlessly. There were a few holes in the backstory that I would like to have filled in, but overall a solid storyline with interesting characters.

So we got dragons, awesome! We got some enemies to more going on, fun! We got a feisty, wants more for herself kick booty heroine, terrific! An entertaining story! Love the scenario of Onya helping prisoner Dragon Prince Dre out of a tough situation, and helping take down some baddies. I do get annoyed at the royal machinations scenarios, but love the read about those nefarious characters being brought down. Really enjoyed the story! Looking forward to more!

The plot was great, it was a good book. I did feel like so much was missing, it jumped from one thing to the next without translation. This could easily be a 600 page book but was cut to short. I did like it a lot and hope there is a part two that I can love.

Great book! It was an emotional roller coster right from the beginning. I really like all of this authors books but Dre and Onya's tale was fantastic. I have found very few good dragon shifter books but this is certainly one I would consider reading again.

- Dragon
- Sassy FMC
- Enemies to lovers

What a great story! I was so drawn into the book and flew through the pages (no pun intended).

Long ago, dragons ruled the land and the kingdom was prosperous. However, some humans staged a coup and wiped out the royal family and their supporters. Except for Saeldreon, who was away from the castle at the time. He has never forgiven himself, feeling he let down everyone.

Many years later, most of the people in the kingdom think that the dragons were only a myth. The land is dry and barren and there are fewer and fewer children being born. There are some who know the truth and hope for a better future and want to see dragon rule reinstated. Unfortunately, Saeldreon has been captured by the current king, a cruel and selfish ruler. Things are looking rather bleak for the dragon prince.

The nobility, in an effort to increase their population and standing, have begun "recruiting" young women from the various villages to prepare them to be wed to nobles. Those not chosen as brides will become servants in the castle. Onya, a feisty young woman, is selected. She is less than thrilled and struggles with the endless rules for the chosen.

While sneaking around the castle, she finds herself in the dungeon and face to face with the dragon prince. Saeldreon senses something special about Onya and finds himself branding her with his dragon fire. Saeldreon knows his time at the castle is limited, but he has been weakened. Will he be able to escape and fulfill his destiny?

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. We meet 18 year old Onya who I selected...or moreso sold ny her evil stepfather. She is not like other girls. She doesn't want to get married or become a bred mare to a noble. Onya knows what she wants and it's not that. At the castle, she is put thru lady training...boring...and has her own servant sotospeak. Any outbursts lands Onya or her maid in trouble. One eve she leaves her room and gets lost and ends up in thr dungeon. She is grabbed by a red headed prisoner and her arm starts to burn. Saeldreon is the last dragon prince. He has been on the run for over 200 years after his family and friends were slaughtered in a war that usurped them. Now he is in silver chains in the kings' dungeon but the woman whom he touches unleashes smtg in him and he is going to use her to get out of there. Onya is not sure what to expect. She has burn marks on her arm that won't go away and she hears the man in her head and ends of near him at weird times. With the help of someone inside the castle, they manage to escape. What onya didn't expect is to have feelings for the dragon. Yes she now believes in thr tales after seeing him shift. Saeldreon sees fire and strength inside his woman and he is determined to make her his mate but first to become one with his dragon and usurp the king and take his rightful place on thr throne. Intrigue, Drama, wow moments make this a good read.

I wanted to like this book; based on the description it looked cute, but I was bored throughout and just wanted to finish it. There were so many grammatical errors, including way too many extra commas. It was like it wasn’t even proofread for mistakes. It also felt like it was written by a high schooler who was being careful about what words they used in case their mom found them writing it. Needless to say, the writing felt very immature. This book could have been longer to include more details, but like other people have suggested, it felt rushed. I didn’t like the scene where the MMC met the FMC. There were a lot of things left unanswered throughout the book, like why didn’t Onya visit her childhood best friend when she went home at the end? The book could have been so good, if the grammatical errors were fixed and more was added to it. I had planned to read the other two books in the series but after reading this one, I don’t think I can read another book written by this author because of how bad it was. Around page 60 I decided to start highlighting all of the grammatical errors I could find to make reading it a little more enjoyable. I found over 90.

Onya and Her Dragon . . .

Onya is a heroine that draws readers to her. She is strong, feisty, yet willing to put her own fears aside to help others. And she doesn’t intend to meet the expectations of others who think they can force her to do their will. So when her fate is decided for her and a royal carriage arrives to transport her to the Great House of Kings, she is not willing to accept their plans for her. She does not want to be forced to become a Lady married to a nobleman of their choice to provide children for them! She doesn’t want to be a wife and mother at all. So she looks for a way to escape.

Finding a man chained up in the dungeon has her curious. Perhaps unfortunately, Saeldreon, the golden-eyed, chained man happens to have his own plans for her. And her knowledge that the dragons from the old stories are all dead and gone may just be a bit inaccurate. Because this last surviving Dragon Prince wants to make her his.

Imagine fate finding you no matter how much you do not believe in such a thing. Onya does not believe in love or destiny and does not see a future as a wife or mother for her. She hunts to feed and take care of her mother and brother and also acts as a protector from her abusive, worthless stepfather.
One day the carriage shows up to take her to the capital to train to be a wife to a nobleman. This goes against everything she believes in, but she has no choice. This sets off a series of events born from her inner courage, stubbornness, and curiosity.
Saeldreon, the dragon prince, is held captive in the dungeons of the capital. Emprisoned in silver, he is biding his time until he can escape and rightfully take his place as the Fire King.
Well-written characters and amazing world-building. This story kept the pages turning and kept me reading late into the night to finish. This is a stand-alone story that leaves you feeling satisfied at the end.

Not instalove

This is a tale about Onya, A peasant girl and Dre, A dragon. We don't get a lot of Dre's back story. Onya is taken with other peasant girls to be made into a bride for the nobles. The role doesn't suit her. She is too active and assertive and doesn't find many that even tolerate her, let alone befriend her. She meets Dre after getting lost and has little attraction to him. He senses her strength and ends up marking her by branding, initiating a bond between them. Even though he has the bond, he doesn't sense or know the quality of the woman yet. Their world was made by dragons and needs a dragon leader to thrive. After being conquered by evil humans, the land and people are suffering. Dre and Onya's bond grows over time as they learn to know each other in the backdrop of wresting the kingdom from an evil king.

DNF- quit at 45%
I just really had a hard time liking the main female character. She’s annoying and selfish and doesn’t care who she hurts - including herself with her shenanigans trying to rebel against her predicament. It just made it seem unreasonable/unlikable for her to let others get her hurt for her misbehavior. When the girl that was instructing her to be a good wife was flogged because of her selfishness, I just didn’t want to read anymore about this stupid selfish girl.

At my age (62), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

2.5 stars Arggg! Ok first off, I want to say I loved most of this book. But it was like the author just got sick of writing it and basically was like “and they lived happily ever after, the end.”

Grrrr! Why put all that effort in to writing details and bringing up these characters and overhearing people about characters only for it to never be brought up again?! Why?! It’s so frustrating when authors do this. It starts off basically day to day what is going on. Then it goes by so fast and it’s just easy and boring and insta love crap with no real detail. You’re just at the end suddenly, wondering what happened. Like a cliff hanger, but there’s no next book to ease your mind. 😤😡🤬

This is such a great read. Onya is part of a society where dragons no longer exist and the world is suffering because of greed and cruelty. She is a strong, brave and kick ass character that dreams of running away instead of settling down and having kids and her journey is exciting, intriguing and captivating. Well paced and filled with drama, action, danger and adventure as Onya discovers the dragon prince captive in the castle. It’s a wonderful fantasy romance with beautiful and descriptive world building and fantastic characters and had me hooked from start to finish!

Good story love the main character Onya and how she pulls through Obstacles with out losing who she is. The way you get pulled into the story, you can't help but root for her and her strong will. Dre is stong and doing what he can to help his kingdom that he hasn't even ruled yet. I do wish there was more of him and everything he went though to pull you closer to him. No matter you can't help but give a dragon smile at the end of this book. 😉

Onya has different views on how girls and women should be treated. Which was very wrong in her time.
She is a fighter and stands up for what she believes in.
When she first meets the Dragon Prince she has no clue who he is. Everyone talking about dragons goes in one ear and out the other. She believes that they are just stories.
Onya and the Dragon Prince have a bond and they help each other to have the life they want.

Cannot wait to read more of their story.

A wonderful quick read.

This book was delightful, but too short. The story was captivating the character's were endearing, and the world building was amazing. Then it ended. I really wish this book had been about 200 pages longer or had a sequel, something more for all the effort that clearly went into it. This is still a great read. I'm just greedy.
P.s. if you're looking for steam, this isn't the one.

A decent short read. The author did a fantastic job making you dislike the antagonistic characters. I loved the world building and attention to detail in the beginning of the book. I also really enjoyed that we had chapters from both main characters perspectives but at the same time I feel like the back half of the book sped the story up so we didn’t get as much detail or story. Don’t get me wrong. I still really enjoyed the book, but I would’ve loved to spend more time on the revolution.

A solid 4.5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed the book. Who doesn’t love a good dragon shifter tale!! The book is fast paced, slow burn with enemies to lovers and touch her and die. Onya is quite the feisty young woman. She didn’t concede to her chosen fate and stood her ground while trying to find her own way.

I’m interested to see where the next book takes us.

Good story but…

The story line and concept has a lot of potential but it’s missing depth. The writing feels like someone retelling a story versus capturing the reader and bringing them into the story. I would read another book by this author because I believe the stories will grow with more experience and time.

I thought this was an interesting read that combined dragons, a human girl with a spine of steal and a kingdom in trouble. Basically Onya gets taken to court to be a bride but has other ideas and meets Dre and trouble occurs A enemies to lovers story with fantasy thrown into the mix. It made me laugh and want to smack the main characters at times but wanted to see how it ended.

had potential

It was a good book but there’s a lot of world building at the beginning and the main characters don’t really get together until 70% of the book so their relationship and the “war” were very rushed through. I enjoyed the storyline but I think the last bit could have been developed more.

Dragon Shifter and a Village Girl

This book showed up on my Facebook feed. Since it looked interesting, I downloaded in KU. I am a finicky reader. On that note, I really enjoyed this book. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is I felt the ending was rushed. I definitely would recommend this book
