An alternative to formula exists! When breastfeeding doesn’t work out, situations such as a premature or an ill baby delay breastfeeding, or a you simply choose not to breastfeed, exclusively pumping breast milk—using a breast pump to initiate and maintain lactation—is a viable option and can be done on a long-term basis. Exclusively Pumping Breast Milk offers moms the knowledge, advice, and support necessary to initiate and maintain their milk supply with a breast pump. This second edition of the first—and most comprehensive—book about exclusively pumping offers well-researched information, and plenty of tips and tricks, to help you on your journey. In addition to the basics of exclusively pumping, the second edition includes information on lactation and breast milk composition, increasing and decreasing supply, overcoming common challenges, pumps and accessories, storing expressed milk, weaning, and also a chapter specifically for mothers with babies in the NICU. Exclusively pumping breast milk is possible and this book will provide the accurate information and support necessary for you to provide your baby with “expressed love”.
Stephanie Casemore is a mother, teacher, and writer living in eastern Ontario, Canada. She initially experienced breastfeeding as a challenge, and exclusively pumped for a year for her first child who was born nine weeks early, and then as a healing experience, nursing her second child for three years. Turning the challenges into a positive and an opportunity to support other mothers, Stephanie shares her experience through her books Breastfeeding, Take Two: Successful Breastfeeding the Second Time Around and Exclusively Pumping Breast Milk: A Guide to Providing Expressed Breast Milk for Your Baby. I have spent a fair amount of time reading up on breastfeeding and still learned a fair amount from this book. It really is hard to find a lot of good information about exclusive pumping, so it's awesome to have it all collected here. I read it straight through, but it's well-organized and easy to read when you may want to just look up the most relevant sections. There's a good balance of both practical information as well as empathy and sympathy for the emotional turmoil involved. I also appreciate that the boundaries of the information presented are stated pretty clearly, so that you're equipped to understand the credibility of the sources for the various guidelines given.
This was a great resource for anyone who is pumping and an excellent resource an source for support for those who are exclusively pumping for whatever reason. With that being said, I don’t think I could have read this while pregnant; I instead read it after birth. For me, there were just too many details that I would not have absorbed before I started trying to BF or pump.
Regarding the content of the book, I found most of the information to be helpful. I appreciate the inclusion of research when possible. I also preferred having all the info in one place rather than having to search multiple websites. The main drawback for me is that the book was repetitive at times because the author purposely wrote it so readers could only read a few chapters if need be. All in all, I’d recommend it to moms who want to learn more and feel supported in their exclusive pumping.
very good read about other breastfeeding options. highly recommended for both pumping and breastfeeding mothers incase they encounter problems along the way.
I just really wish I would have read this before my twins were 4 months old. Really helpful for the long term pumper who is sore and having a lot of difficulties.
Extremely helpful. Well worth the read. I wish I had this knowledge and knew this option when I was reading about breastfeeding.
I will reference this book throughout my exclusive pumping journey. She describes the process and schedule required for exclusive pumping and the support and emotional challenges associated with this breastfeeding option.
