Carlene Cooper was your average teenager. Average, that is, except for her relationship with Josh McCarthy, member of teen mega-group, South Station Boyz. Young love blossomed at a chance meeting when Carly was a senior in high school and Josh was just discovering what stardom really meant. Despite their chemistry, it was no surprise to anyone when their very different lives took very different paths a few months down the road.

Years later, their paths cross again, and they must decide if the spark they felt back then is strong enough to rekindle. Josh has built a name for himself in show business, but Carly, too, has planted roots as a journalist in New York City. Will they be able to successfully merge their lives and overcome the obstacles that drove them apart a decade earlier?

Just as she comes to the decision that will change their lives one way or the other, Detective Trey Foster enters her life unexpectedly, and Carly is faced with another choice. Will she choose the man she's spent her whole life loving, or will she push it aside for a chance at happiness out of the spotlight?

Mel Henry lives in a rural town in central Iowa not far from where she was born and raised. She shares her home with her husband of almost twenty years and a plethora of fur- and scaled-babies. Her three adult children mostly likely fled home in search of peace and quiet.

Mel's first love was books. Her mom read to her before she was even born and continued that tradition long afterward. She's read (or been read) thousands of books in her life and even now, has over three thousand of them on her TBR list. She was born reading, and she jokes that she'll also die reading.

Mel's an avid cook (sometimes by choice), seasoned traveler (always by choice), and a hardcore warrior against chronic Lyme disease (definitely not by choice). She loves Netflix marathons, thunderstorms, and good tea. As a certified introvert, she doesn't do much socially, but enjoys concerts, live theater, and the occasional visit to a book bash.

Mel's first series, a trilogy including Distance and Time, Better in Time, and All This Time can be found exclusively on Amazon.

She's got several projects in the works, but is easily distracted, so when the next book will be released is as much a surprise to her as it is to you. But your patience will be well-rewarded, no doubt.

Being a diehard Blockhead (NKOTB fan) and knowing Joey McIntyre inspired the author's Josh character, this book was on my "must read list". And I am so glad I did.

The author covers the span of over 10+ years following her main character Carly, who she depicts as an average girl with smarts who meets Josh, part of the musical group South Station Boyz. She begins a very romantic long distance relationship with him while working her way through her senior year of high school. They loose touch with one another, only to meet up again 9 years later, both grown and established. They begin to date again and get engaged. When Josh chooses a job in LA, which puts all their future plans on the back burner, Carly cuts things off.

Of course, Carly goes through a traumatic ordeal where the new love interest, named Trey, a police officer, comes in and totally sweeps her off her feet. But there are still unresolved feelings there with Josh.

While I enjoyed how the story ended, I was a wee bit disappointed. I wanted her with someone else. Since I see this as a #1 book in a series, I'm hoping the author picks up where she left off with these two and that I get my way in the next book, although this book could stand alone all by itself, which means the second book could be about one of the other members of the South Station Boyz. Hoping not though...we shall see. But overall, great story and great writing. :)

I read this book when it first came out and am only getting around to do the review now. That speaks volumes for this book and it's Author. To be able to sit down and write a review for a book that I haven't looked at in months couldn't be done if these characters and this story did not stick with me all this time.

First thing I want to say, is that I loved this story line! If you were ever a teenager who fell in love with a boy band (ahem), then you had many different scenarios going on in your head about how you would meet your favorite one and fall in love . . . well, he'd fall in love with you because he already owned your heart. (sigh.)

But those are just daydreams, right? Not for Carly Cooper! Her daydream became a reality when she ran into Josh McCarthy and sparks went a flyin'! Unlike one's typical daydream about their teenage heartthrob, they didn't live happily ever after. They struggled, like most everyday normal couples. Except, of course, they weren't a normal 9-5 working couple. There's definitely a lot to be said for somebody who is the significant other to a celebrity; there's definitely, I believe, more give than there is take for them. Mel Henry showcased this very well.

The characters in this book were relatable, funny and charming (except for the stepdad--jerk). I thoroughly enjoyed all of them, well, except for the jerk. I even found myself falling for Trey as much as I fell for Josh!

That aside, it cannot go without mention, Ms. Henry's capability to really pull you into her book. Their was a scene that was gut wrenching to witness. I say witness because I swear I was in the room. I wanted to close my kindle to make it stop. The only way I could make it stop, was to read on, get Carly past it. That's when you know you are holding the book of an incredible writer!

I actually give Distance and Time 4.5 stars but am unable to post that on Goodreads and Amazon. :(

If you want a book that will give you a bit of nostalgia, a lot of laughter, and a little heartbreak mixed in with a Happily Ever After, then this book is for you! I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next one!

I was provided a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I blazed through this story in a matter of hours. I struggled to put it down and thought the writing was wonderful. Great character development, and really nice attention to details. I loved the storyline and the way the main characters flowed in and out of each other's lives.

My only complaint - and really, it's probably my personal preference more than a direct issue with the author's writing - is the way the story was constructed. I disliked the way it started with present day, then we are transported via flashback 10 years in the past and stuck in that flashback for a majority of the book - THEN we are brought back into the present and move forward with the story. I guess I'm a visual person and see this as being more appropriate in the movies rather than in a book. It did not take away from the story, but I found myself frustrated with it.

The other non-complaint for me was the traumatic event. I don't want to give any spoilers, but there is a life-changing event and while I thought the author did a superb job with the details of it (very realistic response for the victim), it seemed so... out of place in a story about a girl who falls in love with a boy band singer. Maybe too real in a fantasy storyline? It felt shocking and out of place, and the rest of the book just didn't seem to fit. Again - probably just my reaction to the event and the rest of the book that follows, but they seemed like two different stories pasted together because they had a common heroine.

Overall - high 4 star rating, I enjoyed the book and will definitely read it again!

5 Stars Highly Recommended!!
When I started this book I thought it was the typical sweet and coming of age romance, I was sucked in to the book from the very beginning and figured I knew what was going to happen and how it was going to end............... Boy was I ever wrong!!!!!
Mel Henry throws you for a loop that you could NEVER expect and I actually felt like I was living the turmoil Carly was living throughout the entire book. The camaraderie between all of the characters had a realism that left you feeling like they were all your friends.
Josh LIVES to be in the spotlight and his career is the most important thing to him, he loves Carly but is it enough to compete with his dream job?? Carly is passionate about her writing and her life in New York, she is torn when life threatens to separate them and their love is ultimately tested!!!
A traumatic event bring the extremely compassionate Detective Trey Foster into her life, Will her experience ruin her chances at love? Will Josh allow her to let go and move on?? DEFINITELY A must read!!! I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down!!

Do you remember those days (if you were raised in the 80’s) where you would sit in front of the TV watching MTV just praying for the singer who stole your heart would come on the screen and sing just to you? That one person in a band that made your heart go wild? Lying in bed at night, dreaming of what it would be like to be the Mrs. to that sexy singer? Well Mel Henry gave us the reality to that dream in this book.

Carly Cooper came face to face with the man of her dreams when she saw Josh McCarthy singing on stage. She was 18 and the sparks flew quickly between them the moment their eyes met. Going forward with her dream she began to believe that they would have a happily ever after, but she failed to realize she will be sharing this man with the thousands of other girls who believe they have the same chemistry as she does, they just need that chance with Josh.

His band is gone a lot on tours, he lives in East, she is a Midwest girl, distance and time is going to be an issue for them but what he feels is real for her. Two young people, living in a world with demanding commitments, they don’t have an easy road. Eventually they drift apart, the calls stop, the visits stop and soon the memories of those few months are all they have.

Fast forward a few years and they meet again. This time they have more maturity, success and careers set to base a relationship on. Instead of time and distance being the obstacle, they now have dedication to their career dreams. Love for their jobs, love for each other will only keep them together OR drive them apart.
A major event happens to Carly that will leave her a different person but during that event Trey comes into the picture. Will she give up her dream with Josh for reality with Trey? How do you fall out of love with the one who invaded your dreams since you were a teenager?

I loved this story, it just put me back to the 80’s when I used to dream about marrying Jon Bon Jovi and planning a fantasy life with fame, fortune and exotic places that we would travel. She gave me a greater appreciation for the women who love those men. I also found that the emotional intensity in which she created made me suffer along with Carly and Josh during the downs in the relationship and cheer in the bright times between them. You can tell they were meant for each other but life didn’t give them the hand they expected and they weren’t able to figure it out the first time.

The story is written smoothly and once you start, it is hard to put down, not because there is a lot of intense suspense but because the reader can relate to the characters, they can empathize with the scenes and she does a fabulous job at telling the story that will touch the readers heart.

*I really enjoyed this story. It sure didn’t end like I expected it to. I really like it when books don’t end like you think they will. The entire time I read this book I thought I knew what was going to happen but I was way off.

I really liked Josh and Carlene together. They made a great couple. Everything that happened in this book happens to your regular everyday people all the time. I liked how real the characters seemed. I felt like I could walk out of my house and meet a Carlene Cooper on the streets. Those are my favorite characters. Mel Henry has a new fan right here. Her writing is amazing. The book was fast paced and I could believe it was over when I hit the last page.

I was drawn into the story from page 1. I kept turning the pages wanting to know what was going to happen next. I had a couple questions throughout the book and luckily they were answered by the end. I highly recommend this book.

Ok, so I am going to be completely honest with this review. I honestly thought it was ok..WAIT…there is more. I started reading and it was similar to the other books I have read. Carly fell in love with a rock star. They tried the long distance relationship and it just did not work out. Fast forward years later and they run into each. They fall right back into the love that they had for each other in the past. Sounds like other stories you have read correct? That’s what I thought to when I was about 50% into it. Then BAM! The author throws a twist in there that you may or may not like. I will be honest and say that I wasn’t quite sure I liked it. I almost wanted to stop reading. I decided to keep reading and I have to say I am glad I did. I ended up really liking it. I won’t tell you why so I don’t ruin it but you definitely should read this one.

This is a debut novel and I have to say I enjoyed it.

The story begins in 2003, when Carly is heading back home for her 10 year High school reunion.

As she travels back she flashes back to her high school years.

Carly - the average teenage girl, who just wants to go as far from home when college comes. She lives with her mother, who is a pushover, and an overbearing step father. She is the teenager we all remember being, posters of the latest and greatest boy band on our wall. For Carly it was the South Station Boyz. She was infatuated with Josh, the lead singer of the band.

She talks her mom and step dad into letting her go to Chicago for the weekend to look at a college. While there, she makes friends and they talk her into going to the clubs for the night and low and behold she has a chance meeting with Josh. I know, I know, you are thinking, please, a pop star falls in love with a “regular” girl. But this book was so much more than that.

Josh was a nice guy, he just danced with Carly, talked to Carly, enjoyed her company. And yes, their weekend together is a whirlwind, but there was no BDSM, crazy sex, or drugs. Just some innocent time together and maybe a kiss or two. It was refreshing. To read a book that showed us the innocence of teenage infatuation and love.

We follow their relationship through the years and watch as they grow and even grow apart. The metamorphosis of their friendship, love affair and life is beautiful to watch. This book is a refreshing change to many books on the market today. There is no bdsm, no alpha male, (yes there is a rock star but he’s not really a jerk) and it was so nice to read this sweet story about real life.

I always enjoy an epilogue that brings everything full circle. Beautiful debut novel! 3.5 stars

A book about the love between a girl and a boy band. How can you go wrong? I was captivated from the beginning. The details from the early years of Carly and Josh's love affair brought back so many memories from one I was that age. It helps that I am about the same age as the author. If I wasn't I doubt the details of the clothes or accessories would have been so nostalgic. I once again felt young and giddy about the possibility of meeting the guy from the band the I was so in love with.

LIke all relationships there are ups and down. Mel Henry captured the emotion so well. Well done Mel! As for plot twists. Amazing way to switch the tone of the story. I was really not expecting anything like that. I was hard for me to get through that part, but the story needed it for the AWESOME way the story ended. I stayed up until 1 a.m. to finish this story. I am so glad that I did. I fell asleep happy! I would have to say I teared up a little at the epilogue. Made me so happy. But that's all I can say.

I would recommend this story to anyone who believes in boy bands, love and happy endings!

Carly is 18 and on a college visit when she meets her teen crush and lead singer of her favorite band, Josh. Carly and Josh have an improbable relationship and though she is an average high school girl and he is a famous touring musician, they try to make it work. They grow apart due to their different lives, but meet again as adults and find their attraction still strong. They try again to have a relationship, but tragedy and different priorities make things challenging again.

Despite the improbability of the whole situation, it is easy to root for Carly and hope for her happiness and success. Josh treats her very well when he is around, but when they reconnect as adults I was frustrated with his lack of compromise. I was also a little frustrated with Carly and how in her attempt to make sure Josh got the life he wanted, she totally neglected herself. I found the story engaging and definitely felt some emotions on behalf of these characters. I would gladly read more by this author in the future. 3.5 stars.

This is my first read by Mel Henry. I had to stop reading at 65% just to compose myself. Blubbering like a baby in public can get you a nice white jacket with buckles.

This story takes us on a whirlwind romance between Carly and Josh. Small town girl from Minnestoa and rock super star who meet by chance in her senior year of high school during college visits. While she has home life issues the wonderful love story and romance that blossoms held me enraptured with possibilities and hope.

Then Mel Henry eviscerated me pulling the rug out from me and her characters leaving me to wonder if Carly will ever be whole again. She is a strong character with well developed supporting characters/friends that help her heal and then she does it again! Seriously at 90% I was ready to throw my kindle, give up and I prayed it didn't end on a cliffhanger. It doesn't...that's the only spoiler you will get from me. She wraps up the story with a pretty bow filled with hope and I look forward to reading more from Mel Henry.

My summers are always hectic, but I found myself squeezing in time to read Mel Henry's debut novel; risking motion sickness while reading on car trips, foregoing the mounting laundry until my family complained they had nothing to wear, and putting off my own projects—finishing the book took precedence. The story line will strike a chord within most adults about the "what-ifs" we come to struggle with while juggling a successful career, a satisfying relationship, and learning who we are as individuals and what we need out of life. "Distance and Time" explores how we often feel we so desperately want something in our life only to learn it isn't always in our best interest to pursue it. These are, indeed, the hardest lessons learned. The turning point for the main character comes late in the book and part of me would have liked to have seen a little more of the new relationship exploration once things came together, but, all in all, a good debut.

Distance and Time was a great read. I finished it in one sitting because in my opinion, the writing was wonderful.

Carlene Cooper was an average teenager. She was a good girl who worked hard and got perfect grades. A chance meeting with Josh McCarthy, the singer of teen mega group South Side Boyz, brings a whole new level of excitement to her senior year of High School. They had chemistry from the beginning , but were young, so life took them in different directions. Years go by and they meet again deciding to give it another go. Unfortunately life isn't perfect, and a series of events blow their world up. Enter Detective Trey Foster......who will Carly choose?

I loved this book. The writing was smooth and character development was fantastic. I was very invested in Carly and Josh so I'm still conflicted with the way the book ended. Dear Mel Henry.....please please please give me more of this story in the very near future. :)

*Copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

This is the debut for Mel Henry and is the first book in the Time After Time series.

The inspiration for character of Josh comes from Joey McIntyre (New Kids) of 90s fame so I was intrigued of how the storyline would unfold. To be honest it was a little immature for my personal taste but it did hold my attention. However I felt cheated for my HEA when I had invested my time in getting to know Josh and Carly due to what happens in the final 30%. There was also a strange incident that was thrown in that I didn’t feel added anything to the storyline.

By the end of the book I was left feeling a little sad and empty. Maybe it was just one of those books that just wasn’t for me. Overall a good debut and I can’t fault the writing but as to the plot it just left me wanting personally which is a shame as I can see lots of others loved this. Two to three stars.

I received this book for review on behalf of 2 Girls Who Love Books Blog.

Distance and Time was a fantastic book.
Carly was a teenager who really had her head on her shoulders. She fell in love with Josh McCarthy. Josh was a heart-throb to most teenagers. He was a member of a band called South Station Boyz.

Carly realized that their paths in life weren't the same. She didn't want California and Josh wanted to pursue his dreams, so they parted ways.

Carly had a traumatic experience that led her to Trey. He was a detective handling her case. Sparks flew and they found themselves in each others arms.
But is the love between them strong enough to help her forget Josh.

Distance and Time was very well written and an excellent read.

A romance story with themes of second chance romance or if a fresh new romance is what our heroine Carly needs.Falling in love with a rock star is never easy, we all know this from reading romance books, but also long distance well that is a double whammy to relationships. Thrown in the theme of second chance and i will pick up virtually any book, at some points the book felt very similar to others i have read. However and this is a big point a twist gives this story a good jolt and makes it much more than what you think it will be. First book i have ever read by this author and i enjoyed it because of the twist that threw me.

Great story that kept my attention throughout. I didn't want to put it down but my 8 year old, 10 year old and my husband were demanding meals and stuff. :) Carly is a great character that could be a friend of mine. Her relationships and experiences are relatable and interesting to share. Trey is a great guy who any woman would be thrilled to date, the perfect guy to help Carly. Josh was a fantastic first love interest. Can't wait for the second book and share more of their lives. Thanks Mel for writing an enjoyable summer read.

I received this for an honest review.. I found this book to be very good and it brought back a lot of fond memories of obsessing over boy bands. I really enjoyed this book because you really get the feeling of the love and how it can alter you and your life. One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was that it spans quite a few years for the characters and the author does a really good job with the twists. For me that is really what made the book. I really enjoy twists in a story especially when you just don't see it coming!!!

This story spans a lifetime. I thought it was amazing to see how the crinkles and crevices of life work over time.
This is story of love and how it changes as people grow. There was so much feeling in the lives of Carly and Josh. I had tears and at times I wanted to scream and shout then I wanted to slap people. Watch out for the twist, it’s a doozy.

A fantastic read that encapsulates a very heartfelt love story of how “girl meets boy”, in a way that happens only once in a lifetime, giving way to the hope that crazy dreams coming true is indeed possible. A story that breathes life into such realistic characters, you cannot help but want for more.

Good God, this book was a heck of a rollercoaster! In the beginning, it was hard for me to get into. I thought seriously a couple times of putting it down, but I'm glad that I stuck it out. For some reason, I really rooted for Carly and Josh. This books truly is well written. The ending throws you for a hell of a loop but it's fantastic!

This novel was an unexpected pleasure. It was witty, funny in places, heart-wrenching in other places, and it didn't end the way I expected. Basically it had everything I asked for in a novel, which is a feat because I read historical fiction for the most part.
