Years ago, Hadria Imperioli vanished after her father refused her mafia inheritance in favor of her younger brother. Now, she's resurfaced as "Hades"—ruthless leader of the Styx Syndicate mercenaries that terrorize Chicago—and she's hell-bent on finally claiming what's hers.
When her brother announces his engagement to sheltered beauty Aurora Verderosa, Hadria decides it's time to take back her mafia crown and everything else that belongs to her...
Including Aurora.
Abducted from her wedding altar, Aurora is thrilled at first to have escaped marriage to the violent heir to the Imperioli Family. But she finds herself a prisoner still, at the mercy of Hadria's whims and desires.
And soon Aurora begins to crave the intoxicating taste of Hadria's lips on hers...and the wicked pleasures of a life lived outside the law.
Can Aurora resist giving into the darkness Hadria draws out in her? Or will Hadria corrupt her captive completely, coaxing Aurora to turn her back on innocence for the love of a vicious underworld queen?
Captive of the Crime Queen is part one of the Underworld Duet, a steamy contemporary Sapphic mafia romance based (very) loosely on the myth of Hades and Persephone. Reader discretion is advised, and content notes are available on the Copyright page.

Enjoyable read! My first time getting into a series by Persephone Black and it sure won't be my last. This 1st book in 'The Underworld Duet' ongoing chronicle -- is an entertaining, well-paced and also well written plotline --- with an array of really good supporting characters and amazing chemistry between the two leads (Aurora & Hadria) Highly recommended book!
First time they meet, Hades is 30 and Aurora 17 years old. When she kidnaps her, Aurora has just turned 21... I just couldn't keep reading. When have we normalised in our community this predatory imbalance? Why do people would root for a couple where one of them is just a girl? "I thought by now she might have grown up a little. But as soon as she asked why I'd saved her, I knew she was just as naive now as she was then."
Captive of the Crime Queen is exactly the sapphic mafia romance I didn't know I needed—but now I'm completely obsessed. This book perfectly satisfies my current villain-era cravings, delivering dark, gritty romance alongside compelling characters and a deliciously twisted storyline.
Hadria is the ultimate mafia ice queen—menacing, ruthless, and intoxicatingly powerful. Watching Aurora, who begins as a gentle ray of sunshine, slowly thaw and embrace her strength without losing her inherent softness was incredibly satisfying. Their chemistry crackled, building into something both tender and fiercely intense.
I adored the modern twist on the classic Hades and Persephone myth—dark, dangerous, and impossible to resist. Narrators Paige Reisenfeld and Aleksi Graves did a phenomenal job bringing this sinful world and its complex characters vividly to life, making the audiobook an immersive and captivating experience.
This was my first introduction to both this author and the narrators, and I’m beyond impressed. I couldn't dive into book two fast enough!
A gripping age-gap, gangster sapphic romance that had me hooked from the start. If you're into tropes like forced proximity, I want her but I shouldn’t, and touch her and die—this one's for you.
Hadria and Aurora had brilliant chemistry as a couple, and they were both compelling characters in their own right. It was engaging watching their dynamic unfold. The story ends on a suspenseful cliffhanger that has me diving straight into book 2. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!
I’ve always hated Persephone’s fate in her story with Hades but I gave this a go.
The take on Persephone’s story translated to the crime world was nicely done. Taking Hades’s “underworld” and turning into what it was in the book was genius, very clever. Knowing how the original story ended, it was exciting for me to see what poetic freedom the author took and I enjoyed it. An entertaining read.
I read this, thinking it would be a palette cleanser after HOFAS, but I’m so invested and it came out 4 days ago it ended on such a cliffhanger I’m going to kms.
The story had some potential, but ended up relying on stockholm syndrome and existing Hades and Persephone lore instead, and the writing needs major work in my opinion.. I was routinely frustrated with what I was reading and every time I thought I sensed improvement, I was hit with another ick. Also it ended in a cliffhanger.. Why.
If you’ve read or listened to the Bianchi Family Duet books by this author, you’ve pretty much read this one. In both, a young woman is given up to a female ice queen mafia head in exchange for either peace or to pay a debt, the woman is basically held captive while living in luxury before she falls for said captor, then is set free because the captor knows it’s not real if the young woman isn’t truly free to decide what she wants.
And both first books end in a cliffhanger so you have to read the second book to know the conclusion. But as I said, I have a good idea what happens because I read the other series. Who knows - maybe Persephone Black will surprise me.
I found the narration by Paige Reisenfeld and Aleksi Graves quite good, though, especially Reisenfeld’s - who has a delicious voice that’s perfect for Crime Boss Hadria “Hades” Imperioli.
These books are entertaining and can be very sexy.
I liked how this book started off. Hadria and Aurora were such fascinating characters. The wedding snatch was perfection. And I loved the idea of the Syndicate and Elysium. But somewhere along the way, I got a little bored.
The spicy scenes were written well, and I liked Aurora's training and toughening up. But I wanted more expansion on Lyssa or more crime action. Toward the end, it felt like a lot of waiting around Elysium and reflection.
Unsure if I'll continue with book #2, even with the cliffhanger, which clearly serves its purpose for most readers.
Well done! Ugh that ending!! Can’t wait for the next book already! Poor little sheltered Aurora has great character growth. Not only in steamy scenes (nicely done!) but in learning to stand up for herself, protect herself and see for herself who she really is. Hadria has some growth as well, in the emotional sense and maybe that’s harder to do really. The tension when they are together is fire. Book 2, I am waiting for you!!
3 ⭐️s bc the main character is an idiot :) jk but not really…
anyways, this book is really just a sapphic wattpad book if i’m being honest. it has grammar issues which i hate having to read bc it makes it a little difficult for me to understand the sentence.
the main characters are both kinda annoying to me. aurora is more annoying tho w this whole “i’m a new person” persona even tho that’s not really true. i also hated how they made hadria seem sooo evil and cruel and mean..yet she never really did anything, imo. her brother was much worse in my humble opinion and i think they wanted hadria to seem like this evil person, but the author never went into depth on how she was so evil. but aside from that, it was an okay book. it didn’t put me off so much so i will be reading the second book (hopefully that one’s a little better, but i doubt it).
🌶️ spice level: 3.5/5 it is pretty spicy but not too spicy to me, but it could be to you!
I am reviewing both novels in this “duet” as one piece because that’s how I read them and I’m sure that’s how its intended. It wouldn’t change my rating either way so….
These were enjoyable novels that were fun to read, although they were not groundbreaking and I don’t think it will leave much of an impact for me. That sounds harsher than I mean it, it’s just that these were an enjoyable read but not much more. I liked the overall story and the dynamic between the protagonists. There was enough plot to keep me engaged and I definitely started reading the second book immediately after finishing the first, which is a great sign. If you like mafia stuff or captivity romance, then you will likely enjoy these novels a lot. Otherwise, I would say they are good but they wouldn’t be the first thing I would recommend.
The first novel has a lot of slow-build going on, and I think I enjoyed it more than the second. There was a lot more relationship development and playing around with the overall premise. I enjoyed seeing the slow change in the protagonist’s situation, emotions, and plans. The author used the captive angle well, although I could have used more “something” to help build the relationship between the protagonists. The second book has the majority of the spicy content, which is well written, but definitely made the novel feel like it was stretched out longer than it needed to be.
This novel had some typos/mistakes. Not a ton, but every one I found seemed to be related to important details that made the reading experience a bit confusing (not horrible, it was easy to figure things out). Considering how jarring these mistakes were, I am very surprised they made it into the final version of the novel.
One last note; these novels were supposed to be a duet however they ended with a fairly big cliffhanger. I don’t like that! There was also no indication within the novel as to what I should be reading to find out what happens next, which was a little annoying.
Not an ARC review, but a biromantic individual, should you care: This was hot! I was drawn in straight from the beginning and could barely put this down. We read it for book club, and I am now halfway through the sequel. The age gap is a bit strange since they first meet when Aurora is maybe too young, but I still love their romance. The spice is on point for an FF novel, and their romance dance in the middle had me gasping and begging for Hadria to get it together. The ending was predictable (but also not wink wink), but who cares. There could've been a little more action in this book, as it's mostly in the sequel, but in the end, it didn't break the book. My one big note is that Persephone could have made both novellas into one book instead of two parts. Maybe this trick is for more page flips and purchases? I'm not sure, but it's a little irritating. Just make it a two-part book. shrug
I’m the biggest sucker for HadesxPersephone anything so of course I had to read this the second I found out it exists.
Gang/mafia crime lord Hades, who happens to be a very hot woman. 😍 I loved how mythology cameos were mixed in, and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the book.
The characters were interesting and well developed (even better development in book 2!) The book was written well in general, plot was interesting and the pacing was great. Hades is very respectful, and I loved that too. The spice was spicing — this stands out as having some of the best sapphic spice scenes I’ve read in a long time.
I read this way too fast then immediately started reading the second. Love it, so happy I found this duet.
Firstly, I love sapphic mafia books and secondly, I love Greek mythology retelling (even if it’s only loosely based). This is very loosely based on Persephone and Hades. This is dark romance, so be sure to check content warnings before reading. I enjoyed this one, like I do all Persephone Blacks books. I reread this with the audiobook, narrators Paige Reisenfeld and Aleksi Graves did a great job. This is book one in the Underworld Duet. Captive/Captor, forced proximity, opposites attract, Grumpy x Sunshine. Written in first person with 2x POV’s. 3x Spicy scenes.
(I LOVEEEE LYSSA) I liked it, it's technically my first mafia book, and I'm into this shit. However, I don't have much to say just quotes as usual :p
"Are you wearing anything under that ridiculous outfit?" Y se preocupa
"I did not save you, Sunshine. I merely reclaimed what was mine. You belong to me now" "I don't belong to anyone" "You don't belong to anyone?" "We'll see about that"
"I want respect, not just fear"
"And one day, I swear it, I'll be free" Yeah, and when she has the opportunity, she goes back to Hadria (I would do the same)
"The freedom to come and go as I please. To make my own choices, my own mistakes"
"Consider it a show of good faith between us. I know your time has been difficult. But when I said I wanted you to be happy, Aurora, I meant it" YES
"If you want her, have her. She wouldn't resist. She wants you, too" ... "I want her. But I know if I touch her..." "What?" "I'll destroy that light in her eyes. There's something in me that would take a great pleasure in extinguishing it, Lyssa. That's why I can't be around her" "You're just worried it would actually mean something to you"
"When I have him at my mercy, I will slowly and brutally castrate him and then watch him bleed out, because his threat toward Aurora has driven all thoughts of restraint from my mind. No one threatens what is mine" MUY CORRECTO ✔
"Your innocence won't give him pause like" "Like it does you?" "Yes"
"You don't want me... nice?" "I want you. I want the real you. Please, show me"
"What do you want? What do you want from me, Aurora" TODO
"Does it mean something to you?" "Ah, Sunshine... It means far too much. That's the problem. I'm sorry if I've upset you. That was never my intention. I'm cold because that's who I need to be. It would be too dangerous for me to let anyone..." "Into your heart? Then if not your heart... your bed?" Oh
"If I want freedom, I can't wait for someone else to grant it to me. I need to take it"
"And it wasn't just your mother's request that made me..."
"Love is not for people like. And yet... The problem, of course, is that this isn't love. Can't be. Not while she is my prisoner. Not while I'm keeping her here against her will"
SORRY FOR ALL THIS BUT I HAD TO "You deserve so much more. A chance at a normal life, away from all this darkness. But I've been dazzled by you, so bright and beautiful. I wanted to process that light for myself" "You can have it. You can have it all, Hadria. You can have me" "Sunshine, don't you see? I can't keep you here. As much as it pains me... I need to set you free. I want you to have the freedom you crave" "But I don't" "Aurora. Don't you see? While I keep you here against your will, I can never really be certain if this thing between us it's real" "Believe me Hadria it's real" "But you can't know that, Sunshine. Not until you've had the opportunity to experience something different. Your whole life, you haven't had a choice. And I want to be the one to give you that. To give you the choice to stay or leave"
212
"Think about whether you might ever be able to forgive me for the things I've done to you" Excuse me, but what has she done?
I have no opinion on the end :))

I really like how Persephone Black wrote this with a slow pace, but not so slow you're bored or screaming to "get to it already". You're pulled into Aurora and Hadria's world, Aurora being a captive her entire life, first to her father and then, in a way, at first, to Hadria. Aurora is sheltered and naïve, but not in an annoying way; she is always looking to learn and expand, taking her self-preservation as the first thing. Hadria takes her, saving her (in her words), only to have her imprisoned at her fortress of a home. It's a mix of a Mobster story and a fairytale, taking place in modern times but functioning almost like it's the mid-1900s. Watching Aurora grow and show her resiliency and ability to learn and adjust is just as satisfying as watching Hadria grow and let her walls down. I hate cliffhangers, and this one ends with just that, so buy the next one with this book or right before you're done reading it.
Interesting book. I got vibes of this sapphic mafia book I read on Wattpad years ago, except that one was better LOL. I liked how Hadria was pretty obsessed with Aurora from the beginning of the whole kidnapping situation. I thought it was kind of drawn out and got a little bored at the end. Aurora also pmo because of how she has no regard for mafia rankings and the seriousness of Hadria’s responsibility like girl you can’t just interrupt a mafia meeting 😭😭
WOW. This book was phenomenal! I wish I read it sooner! The story captivated me from the beginning and it held my attention until the end. I'm sad at the ending lol, but glad I have the next book lined up to read soon! I can't wait to read more from this author.
honestly the plot felt very predictable and unoriginal (basically like any other mafia story) i desperately wanted and hoped for something more creative and original but…we never got there.
I really enjoyed the book love the story line love the characters I couldn't put it down it had me at the beginning and at the end can't wait to read the next book
