Rate this book
When a fiery meteor lands on the Somvanshi estate, Jay and his mentor Kaka are the first to find it, and Jay is mesmerized by the element he finds in the orb. Using his family-owned Vantra Labs, of which he is the CEO, Jay carries out extensive research into the material, along with his team of brilliant scientists. He names the material, the black element.

Little does he know the chain of events that he is about to set off. Directed by the strings of fate, Jay is heading towards the truth concealed in family legend and a prophecy that can be traced back to the times of the Mahabharata war.

When Jay realizes the supernatural possibilities that the black element is capable of, he is determined to use it for the greater good. But, as history has shown, when there is power in the wrong hands, greed takes prominence and compassion takes a back seat.

Amid a succession of heists, ploys, twists, tragedies and discoveries, will Jay be able to see the true picture? Will he understand the balance between fate and free will and how they can amalgamate to fulfil his purpose? Will he realize the prophecy? And is all of this simply history repeating itself?

" The possession of great power necessarily implies great responsibility. - William Lamb (1817)"

What will you do if you accidentally get the power to change the world one fine day? This is the question that the authors are trying to answer through this novel.

This is the first book of the trilogy written by Laksh and Ashish. All the events start when a meteor lands in a place where the protagonist, Jay, lives. Jay decides to make a detailed study of the meteor in his lab, Vantra Labs, which has all the modern facilities for the same. He never knew that he was at the onset of a butterfly effect and that any fatuous foible from his side could totally destroy his life.

Jay's lack of awareness furtively leads to a frantic chase of the multitude for the black element extracted from the orb that has supernatural possibilities.

The readers are taken through a labyrinthine path involving myths, fantasy, and science. It is considered very difficult to maneuver all these topics simultaneously, as any slight misstep can lead to an impasse, destroying the entire effort made by the authors. But this tale of family, generations, love, hatred, betrayal, heists, and discoveries is intricately crafted that will satisfy most readers.

What I learned from this book
1) What is the best way to deal with grief?
We might be familiar with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance). But what is the best way to deal with grief? You might get an answer to it in the following quote.
"Every individual has their own way of dealing with grief. Some prefer to stay in denial, a state of numbing feelings and paralyzed thoughts. Others quickly jump out to suffer through the pain and guilt, whirling in a vicious spiral down memory lane, constantly tackling a limbo of "had-it-been" and "could-have-been" and "if-only". Many people skip this and dive headfirst into anger, seeking vengeance against the ones who caused such grief. But the only way out from such grief is to accept the loss and embrace truth as it is."

2) What is the relation between hope and fear?
It is generally accepted that hope for a better future can help us to have a current happy existence. It is believed that hope and felicity concatenates perfectly. But what about hope and fear?
"Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay."

3) What is the only truth in this world?
This is not an ideal question to ask as the answer heavily varies between individuals. Still, no one can deny the importance of time in our lives.
"There is only one truth and that truth is time. Everything depends on time. What we think is right today may not continue to be so in future."

4) Why is it wrong to say that life is a game?
Some people treat life like a game. We can see what will happen if we try to take such an approach in our lives in this novel.
"If life is a game, then why are all players losers in it? We are being manipulated like puppets, then how is this a fair game? How is it unbiased when death is always the victorious one?"

5) Is it ok for Doctors to believe in miracles?
It is a highly challenging question to ask. In this 21st century, medical science has progressed in such a way that it has enabled us to answer almost all the unknown questions. The answer to this question is subjective and depends on the Doctor's personal faith and experiences while practicing their profession. Such a topic is discussed in this book by the authors.
"Then this is nothing short of a miracle, is it? As a nurse, you have witnessed it yourself. So many people who end up in horrifying car accidents come out of it with nothing more than a scratch. It's just God's way of telling us that it wasn't his time to suffer. Even in such a profession based solely on science, you must sometimes believe in miracles,' the Doctor replied."

My favourite three lines from this book
“Mothers never sleep. They just worry with their eyes closed.”

"There is no peace without conflict; no joy without sadness; no virtue without sin; and son, there is no sannyasa (renunciation) without karma."

"Whenever you feel rage bubbling inside you, think of the consequences; where would the decisions you make under such a cloud lead you? Anger never creates, Jay, it only destroys.'"

What could have been better?
There are too many things happening in some chapters that some readers will find difficult to catch up with the events, especially due to the nonlinear, disjointed negative.

I am glad to see two young authors deciding to work together for a trilogy and the first book getting movie rights even before it gets officially published. If you are someone who is interested in any of the multiple themes embedded in this novel, you will probably have an enthralling experience reading it.

Name : The Descendants
Author : Laksh Maheshwari, Ashish Kavi
Genre : Sci-fi, family politics

My 💭:
[11/03/24 7.59PM]

I had started reading this book yesterday, assuming that this story was gonna be fully sci-fi and supernatural stuff. If you read the blurb, you would think that too. What I really didn't expect, was an unexpected philosophical side to the story that will stay with me for a long time, maybe my whole life.

Okay, let's start from the beginning. I would like to say this publicly, after reading and reviewing SO many books, that the first chapter matters. It sets the course of the story. If the writing and plot can grab the reader's attention by the first chapter, you know that reader will love the book. That's what happened with this story. The way we are introduced to Ru, Ha and Sa in the first chapter, sets the foundation of how the story is gonna be - full of sci-fi supernatural stuff and adventure and action and family politics and most importantly - humanity.

By the time I finished the book, I realised that the main core of the plot is - human philosophy. Greed, anger, perverseness - these are things that have overwhelmed our society today. The book asks a very eithical question to us - what would we be like if we were presented with unimaginable power? In this story, the stone is the source of that power. But IRL, it's the position one holds in society. That story Shantanu tells little Dhruv about the puppy, holds such significance in today's time. Normal people, like you and me, when given a bit of power, often lose our sense of morals and values and give in to the temptation of power. How? By proving our control over the weak. Gosh, I have seen how 'helpful' our authorative figures and public servants are for the common people like us, I have seen first hand how greed and power shine in their eyes. Nowadays, most people become IAS and IPS officers for the title and the respect and for showing off on reels only, how many enroll for the work? Humans only seek power. It's disgusting. Yet it's something that cannot be removed unless we overthrow society, which we can't.

Being a huge sci-fi geek and a philosophy lover, I absolutely loved this book. The writing style is simple enough to attract many first time readers. Plus, the symbolism of so many serious societal issues through a sci-fi book is honestly a masterstroke. I'll take Kaka's philosophies with me to my grave.

And also, I am so happy to see that it will be adapted to a movie. Trust me, the plot is perfect for screen lovers.

On a personal note, this week has been overwhelmingly bad for me, I was quite en route to having a reading slump. I couldn't properly enjoy any of the books I read this week. But this book somewhat brought me back and gave me some much needed philosophical advice about life and death. This book quite saved me from drowning in myself. Thank you to both the authors for writing such an enjoyable story!

Cannot wait to read the next books in this series 🤩.

This is my commentary / reading experience and it has spoilers. This is not a review.

The Descendants is a good quick read. I completed it in a kind of single sitting in 6 hours.

The parts that I liked is that it is fast paced, feels like a Bollywood movie and it justifies that why it is “soon to be a major motion picture”.

Next is that the POV storytelling is very good. Book starts with Arindham’s POV and it looks like Dhananjay’s is the bad guy and it shifts to Dhananjay’s POV then it looks like he’s the good guy.

Now this book is a mythological fiction so it has some parts of mythology and some parts of fiction and I personally loved the fiction part. The original part of the book was my favourite and most enjoyed.

I think this book suffers from the classic “First book of the trilogy” curse, where everything makes sense once you read the entire series. I know the entire series will be good and will make proper sense but that is not an excuse for the first part being not that good. Because success of the series does depend upon the first book. So I know the following things will make sense in the future when trilogy is completed but right now they do not feel very good.

Coming to the mythology part, honestly it felt like lazy writing to me (no offence to the authors, it is just what I felt). Everything was just too in the face and straightforward. Our protagonist is Dhananjay (Arjun), his kind of rival is Karan (has ditto backstory of Karn), his mentor is Kaka who is also his Driver (Saarthi) and is always in the Geeta Gyaan giving mode and it feels very odd. Because honestly no one talk like that all the time. So these parts were not subtle at all. Also the entire fight between cousins and mama being the bad guy whose name is Girdhar (from Gandhar, Shakuni). It also had the Abhimanyu’s death and Dhirdhrashtra’s killing hug.

Now I know this will make sense because in the prophecy it says history will repeat itself.

Also this thing of first book being underwhelming is not happening for the first time, it also happened with The Hidden Hindu. Once I read the entire series then it made sense. But again this is not an excuse, there are many books out there that are part of a series and their first book is equally good and makes complete sense. To name a few: Dhantasura, Saptarishi, Protectors of Kavach.

One last complain that I have is consistency error, editors should be more careful. In the entire story it is called Chandravimaan-3 and then once it is called Chandrayaan-3 and then back to Chandravimaan-3.

Conclusion: Story has a really good potential and I’ll be definitely reading the second and third part.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

"The Descendants 1" by Laksh Maheshwari and Ashish Kavi takes readers on an exhilarating journey filled with mystery, science fiction, and elements of the supernatural. The story revolves around Jay, the CEO of Vantra Labs, who stumbles upon a fiery meteor that holds a powerful element known as the black element. As Jay delves deeper into the research, he discovers hidden family legends and a prophecy dating back to the Mahabharata war.

The author deftly navigates the complexities of power dynamics, portraying the allure of the black element as a double-edged sword. Jay's noble intentions to harness its power for the greater good are tested by the machinations of greed and ambition, echoing the timeless adage that absolute power corrupts absolutely. This thematic exploration serves as a poignant reminder of humanity's susceptibility to the seduction of power, underscoring the moral ambiguity that permeates the narrative.

Amidst a tapestry of heists, ploys, and tragedies, the narrative unfolds with a symphonic crescendo, culminating in Jay's existential reckoning with the prophecy concealed within his family's legacy. Here, the author's masterful storytelling elevates the novel beyond mere entertainment, prompting readers to contemplate the interplay between fate and free will in shaping human destiny.

The prose is imbued with lyrical eloquence, transporting readers into a realm where myth and reality converge. Each character is meticulously crafted, their motivations and conflicts adding depth and nuance to the narrative tapestry. Moreover, the author's evocative descriptions breathe life into the settings, from the opulent halls of the Somvanshi estate to the ethereal mysteries of the black element itself.

In conclusion, it is a tour de force of storytelling, blending elements of mystery, mythology, and existential inquiry into a rich tapestry of narrative complexity. Through its exploration of fate, free will, and the timeless quest for meaning, the novel resonates with readers on a profound level, inviting them to ponder the mysteries of existence long after the final page is turned. Truly, a triumph of literary prowess and philosophical inquiry.

Laksh Maheshwari and Ashish Kavi's exciting and engrossing story, The Descendants, blends facets of science fiction and Indian Epic- Mahabharath. The narrative centers on Jay, the CEO of Vantra Labs, who discovers a mysterious black substance with supernatural abilities. The power dynamics between Jay and his uncle and the various plots, tragedies and treacheries resembles the plot of Mahabharata.

The writers do an outstanding job at creating a feeling of mystery and intrigue. Jay embarks on a self-discovery trip and uncovers dark truths about his family's past when he discovers the black element.

Jay is a likeable and passionate lead character who is motivated by a desire to harness the dark side for the sake of society. Kaka, his guru, offers direction and insight all throughout the narrative. Each time, their conversations reminded me about the unique friendship of mentor and mentee between Krishna and Arjuna.

Like Arjuna, Jay's various humanly emotions overpowers his intentions time and again, he also struggles with the want to exploit the dark element for his own gain as he explores its potential further.

The philosophical ideas explored here, such as power and its effects, fate, discretion, greed, and the lack of compassion, are thought-provoking and briefly reminded me the lessons of Bhagvad Gita as well.

Laksh Maheshwari and Ashish Kavi have a clear and captivating writing style.

For enthusiasts of the Science fiction or Mythology genres, The Descendants is a must-read because it is an overall compelling and thought-provoking read that highlights the writers' storytelling abilities.

The descendants was literally one of the page turners I’ve read. I was damn curious to know what could be next. However we can say it’s a plot like Kurukshetra runbhoomi built in the periphery of modern day premises.
From ancestors to the descendants, the characters were finely carved and characterised. The authors intricately involved the teachings of Lord Krishna, the well being of Arjuna, the sacrifices of Karn, the mislead kinship and the conspiracies of Shakuni Mama in some altered ways.
This is a story of Jay, the scientist who selflessly wants to help the nation and it’s researches but faces a lot of troubles, defeats and deception from his kinsman. He looses everything whilst researching the power of the black metal, there were defeats, deceptions, deaths, he was shattered but someone was there to remind him his duties. As he is the one on the right side under the guidance of his charioteer I would say, his driver Kaka; who knows much beyond.
As it has been said, ‘history has always repeated itself, time have always been changing’, the destiny had been planned right from the Somvanshi or the Arjuna’ lineage. Though I enjoyed the whole storyline and the good lessons the author has poured in.
Picking this one up was one of my best decisions, had a thrilling journey.

PLOT: The story revolves around three generations of Somvanshi family covering the patriarch's rise and the younger generation's struggle to prove their worth. Dhananjay, the son of famous scientist Ranvijay and grandson of Shantanu embarks an adventurous journey to reveal the secrets of the black element in Vantra Labs. Will he be successful in his quest or will he lose himself in the history of his family name?
REVIEW: ● Throughout the story, a very strong analogy with Mahabharata is made which made the narrative known but, still very interesting read because this analogy provided a modern, refreshed take on the tale. Kaku's wise words really left a great impact.
● The science talks, facts, information intrigued me a lot because, I really adore the discipline this combo with rich imagery transports the readers into the triumphs and tragedies of the Vardhan Empire.
● The story captures the themes of love, loss, forgiveness, legacy, heritage and family bonds.
Overall, I have absolutely no doubt why this book has been chosen for a cinematic exposure. The end of part 1 of the end does make me question "why did I start reading this when I don't have all 3 parts of the trilogy?" Can't wait for the succeeding parts.

I was captivated by Jay's journey of self-discovery till the very end as it was suspenseful and intertwined with the moral dilemmas he faced in the maze of the black element's power. Its flawless fusion of suspense, action, and subtle character development made it an engrossing story.

The science fiction and mythology blend together so well that the thrilling plot grabs the reader's attention right away. These components are deftly combined by the talented writers, who also create compelling characters and storyline twists that make the novel impossible to put down.

This literary gem stands out mostly for its in-depth examination of philosophical concepts like fate, free will, and the consequences of having great power. The many intricacies of the story made me wonder about the age-old question of whether our fates are set in stone or determined by cosmic forces.

Overall, "The Descendants" is a fascinating read that will appeal to fans of mythology, science fiction, and thrilling experiences. Its deft storytelling and thought-provoking subjects take it above the level of simple amusement and leave a lasting impression on readers.

//The book is about the fiery meteor which lands on Somvanshi Estate and Jay and his Kaka are the first who find it and he is very happy with the element he got in the orb. He took it into his family owned Vantra lab, of which he is the CEO and research into the material along with his team of brilliant scientists and named this material the Black Element😱

What little he knows about the chain of events that he is about to set off. Directed by the strings of fate, he moved towards truth that is hidden in the family legends and a prophecy that can be discovered to the times of the Mahabharat war. 🫶🏻

The book thrills out you with everything chapter you read .
The drama revolves around and chapter 33 THE PASSIVE HEIST is the one that everyone should look.

From the moment I flipped open the pages of "The Descendants," I was hooked. The seamless blend of science and mythology drew me in, setting the stage for an electrifying adventure. I found myself captivated by Jay's journey of self-discovery, his moral dilemmas, and the tantalizing power of the black element.

What truly sets this book apart is its exploration of timeless themes like fate, free will, and the consequences of power. As Jay delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the black element, I found myself pondering the age-old question of destiny versus choice.

With just the right mix of action, suspense, and character development, "The Descendants" kept me eagerly turning pages, desperate to uncover the truth behind the ancient prophecy. And that cliffhanger ending? It's a killer, leaving me craving more.

In the end, I can't recommend "The Descendants" enough. Whether you're a fan of science fiction, mythology, or thrilling adventures, this book has something for everyone. So, do yourself a favor and dive into Jay's world. You won't regret it.

"UNPUTDOWNABLE"

2025 starts with a banger. What a lovely book to start the new year. The Descendants is fast-paced and intriguing. The way characters are mythologically connected shows how good authors have done research and read all the mythological stuff thoroughly. The way they weaved characters and their mythological connection is damn good.

A short synopsis of the story is that Jay found the element that is not from the earth. And when he starts researching the element, he gets to know that this element is way more capable and powerful than what he was thinking of. The element can cure many life-threatening diseases and can also increase the human life span.

The story is so fast-paced that it can be completed in 6-7 hours (the one who is a bookworm and sci-fi lover). The last 2 chapters, including the epilogue, will give you goosebumps.

If you are not reading this, then I could say you are losing heaps of experience. The way the author has ended the book will definitely force you to order the next part of the series.

The Descendants, Book 1 of the trilogy, is a blend of sci-fi and mythology. In the year 2020, a fiery meteor lands on the Somvanshi estate. Jay Somvanshi, the eldest son of the Somvanshi family, discovers this mesmerizing meteor and takes it to the Vantra lab. When Jay and his team study the element, which they call the black element, they discover its potential powers, which can change the fate of humankind. What happens next is a chain of events that changes Jay's understanding of power, free will, and fate.

The author skillfully blends elements of sci-fi, mythology, adventure, mystery, and philosophy, creating an engaging narrative. I liked Jay's character; his moral dilemma and his journey to self-realization are portrayed brilliantly.

Though I found the sci-fi part of the book fascinating, the mythology part was a bit clichéd and predictable.

Overall, it was an engaging and thrilling read. If you are into sci-fi and mythology, this book is for you.

It is a fantasy book and the first book of a trilogy. It is going to be a major motion picture soon.

This story is a mixture of history, mythology and science.

The book talks about the 1940s when the British were in India, about the Mahabharata and an asteroid.

It features a variety of characters from different eras but they are all connected through the black element that was part of the asteroid.

The characters are well developed and this makes the book worth reading.

The story takes the reader on a kind of adventure.

The story has a touch of mystery element right from the beginning which makes it interesting and entertaining to read.

The surprising ups and downs will keep the reader engaged till the end.

It really is a page turner.

The cover page is mesmerizing and suits the title of the book.

The language used is simple and understandable but still there is scope for improvement.

Overall, I would recommend this book.

If the power is in the wrong hands, it can lead to disastrous effects. There are many examples in the history that have proved the ill-effects that can be there. The author has given the modern narrative, a historical twist that is surely going to impress you.

This is not the typical narrative that you might be expecting in the book, it's quite unique and a very different approach has been used in the book. A fiery meteor is found on the Somvanshi estate , it is now in the hands of it's founders to use it for a good purpose. On researching further, a lot of unexplored and shocking facts would be found. Would it change the decision of it's founders in accordance to it's use? Read this book to find out.

I had such a great time reading this book and it has a strikingly impressive style. Interested readers should definitely check out this book.
