First person, present tense. A hard one to pull off, but I believe that it worked. The story is fairly short, which means a fast pace (sometimes too fast) and some things/characters could have been developed more. But I liked it, it had a good vibe. I even loved parts of it, it was exciting, and if it had just slowed down at times I could have given 5 stars. What I mean is that some parts went so fast they got a bit confusing, and with a slower pace instead of racing through it, that could have been clearer and better-developed. This author had so many good ideas, but it was just a bit much for a novella, too many ideas muddied the waters; elaborate on that, put in a bit more structure, and you’ve got gold. In the end, I was thinking that I’d’ve liked to get to know Charlotte a bit better, and that it was a bit weird for wanting someone to die because they stole a family heirloom, who would get THAT upset over that? Not the whole town like in this book, I can tell you that! In the 1950s I don’t think that was even possible. But all in all, even though there’s room for improvement, I enjoyed it very much!
Would you be skeptical if you inherited a mansion from someone you didn’t know and weren’t related to in any way? Charlotte Miller arrives to explore the possibilities and to meet with the estate lawyer, Anna Butler. When she finds Anna dead the following morning, she contacts the police. Handsome Detective Grey arrives to investigate and together the pair set out to discover the mansions secrets with the unexpected help of a tabby cat and a little girl with riddles in the Room of Many Doors. I enjoyed this fun paranormal mystery. It can easily be read in one sitting and is perfect for a weekend read for anyone who likes a clever tale set in an old mansion with many secrets. This is my honest review of an ARC I received from the author.
A lawyer informs a woman, apparently unconnected to the family, that she is to sign the papers accepting ownership of the hated mansion. The towns people throw rotten fruit at lawyer as she drives the new owner to her place. The cook is rude and hides things like caterpillars in the food and the next morning the lawyer is dead. Now a detective gets interested and they work together to solve the crime. It is an eerie tale with a hidden door with many doors inside that hide the secrets of the past, but you have to solve puzzles to get in them. There is just a strangeness to the story that makes me want more to the ending.
Claws and Conundrums is book #1 in the The Misadventures of a Cat Detective series by Alice Stone.
Charlotte is offered a mansion by a man she didn’t know. When she goes to fit, things don’t go as planned, especially when there is a murder.
This was a cute, quick read. There was enough going on in this story that it could have been a full length novel. It is a good introduction to the characters and the mysteries of the mansion.

This is the first book in the Misadventures of a Cat Detective series and it's off to a great start. It's a short novella and can be read in one sitting.
It has a mansion, a mystery-solving cat, and characters that make this story come to life. It starts with Charlotte inheriting a mansion from a man she never met, then the real estate lawyer is murdered and it's up to Charlotte to figure out who did it. I enjoyed trying to put this puzzle together along with Charlotte.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.
Anna Butler is sent documents saying that she is the new owner of the Livingstone Manor and must come to the estate to take possession. She arrives and is certain that everything is a mistake as she doesn't even know the people. The lawyer that meets her is found murdered and Det. Gray from the town comes to solve the mystery and gets tangled into Anna's life. She starts having dreams and a tabby cat starts showing up and directing her. Interesting story and the first of the series.
Enjoyed this book very much! Had a lot of drama, mystery and some romance. Being a quick read I was able to read it in one sitting. The storyline was very interesting and I liked each character. Especially the cat! Would like to see more of this in a series!
Mysterious circumstances surround the mansion for many years, evil doings & Magic. Two lovers who could not be together in human form, And a room of many doors which will not open till a puzzle has been solved. But Charlotte & Grey will preserve to get the answers.
really enjoyed this book. It wasn't overly long, but a lot was fit into this short book! Detective Grey and Charlotte have a mystery to solve in a VERY mysterious mansion and the two of them must work together to suss out it's secrets. I liked the two MCs, they were well written and so was the scenery in the story. I am going to read the second book in the series now!
I get where the author was trying to take the story, but it needs a lot more development. Where does someone accused of stealing get punished with death by an executioner? Stupid storyline, many holes.
Curses, mystery, and a little romance. This story will keep you reading until the end. It’s a quick read but one you can’t put down. Can’t wait for another story by Alice Stone.
This was okay. I liked it two thirds through and then it just finished. I liked the two main characters. Some of the others were a bit finicky. You may like it. It was just the ending I wasn't sure about.
This was an interesting paranormal cozy mystery with some interesting characters. The story starts off as Charlotte inherits a mansion and then gets caught up in a murder investigation! I received a free copy of the book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I really enjoyed the start to this new series being written by Alice Stone. I loved how the mystery unfolded and of course I loved the cat who was a mystery within the mystery. It had an interesting plotline that I hope the author delves deeper into in future series.
A fun paranormal cozy that i enjoyed reading. The storyline is easy to read and is different from any other, I like the characters and look forward to more of this series to see the characters progress. I received this arc for free and I wanted to leave an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. I don’t understand why it was listed as the second book on Amazon. This is definitely the beginning of the story. This was a totally twisted cozy, with so many hidden secrets. I can’t wait to read the real second book now!
This was a very exciting and entertaining story. I didn't expect all the secrets etc. It was a complex story that kept me reading and guessing. The ending was a shocker. I highly recommend this book.
He really isn't a cripple, is he??? Charlotte and Detective Gray will figure things out though, won't they??? I enjoyed the story and recommended the book.
