'Alfred of Wessex, Book Vengeance' is the second book in the Alfred of Wessex series. It has been described as "a brilliant read", "thrilling" and "5* at least". 'Vengeance' is the follow-up to 'Alfred of Wessex, Book Inheritance' and takes the story onwards. Wessex has survived one invasion by the Danes but the next one could be decisive. And yet Wessex remains divided by rivalries and intrigue. Alfred of Wessex is based around real historical events. The Michael Carden Michael Carden has five published books to date, including humorous tales of cycling adventures through historic sites of Britain. This is the second book of the Alfred of Wessex Book Vengeance.
No, I have not confused the book I am reviewing, though I'm due to turn next to a 19th Century writer who needs no introduction. I came to Mr Garden's 2nd book in his Alfred of Essex series with, & forgive me, great expectations! Was I disappointed? I enjoyed Book One, & I feasted on this. I love the history, the fact & the fiction, & the knowledge & writing skill of this author. He blends and he crafts & is fast becoming one of my favourite historical fiction writers, but for me has established the number one spot of all the writers I have read ( & they are numerous) of this period of English history & certainly those that feature the iconic Alfred, King of Wessex.
Well done! Another solid entry in this novel/ historical fiction series.
I have even less respect for the Danish invaders than last book. Rapists, murderers, slavers, pirates, and oath breakers. King Guthrum is truly a villain for the ages.
Looking forward to the conclusion. Recommended for people who love historical fiction and have had enough of historical revisionism that makes viking invaders look like heroes.
This book 2 continues the Alfred of Wessex story and has the same historical background as book 1, well described to set the scene for Michael Carden’s story of Alfred. I found it fast paced, historically interesting and found the story believable. I became fully engaged in the story and characters and found it difficult to put the book down. You want to know what happens next in the story as it unfolds. And I’m definitely Looking forward to book 3.
