I’m a queen. Nothing more.
Not a woman, not a widow, and definitely not a mother.
All my broken memories are buried in a box at the bottom of the Arctic sea.

The newspapers call me stoic, but I just call it survival...
...until Asher shows up, and a hairline crack appears on the surface of the ice that’s kept me safe for so long.

My childhood friend is all grown up.
Broad shoulders, smoldering gaze, hands that make my mind run wild.

For the first time in years, I remember what it feels like to want.
To be wanted.

He melts the frost clinging to my heart and shows me everything I’ve pushed away.
Offers me a new life with the brush of his lips against mine, a whisper in my ear, a curl of heat in the deepest part of my core.

But Asher has secrets, and I have responsibilities. A queen can’t put down her crown for anything.

Not for love.
Not even for betrayal.
Definitely not for Asher.

Ice Queen is Book 8 in the Royally Unexpected series. It can be read as a stand alone.

Lilian Monroe lives in a luxurious jungle treehouse surrounded by lush greenery, with an army of scantily-clad men with rippling abdominal muscles ready to attend to her every need.

No, wait. That's not true.

Lilian Monroe spends her days dangling her feet into her pool, while a scantily-clad pool boy with rippling abdominal muscles feeds her chocolate-covered strawberries and massages her back.

Okay, okay. You got me. That's not true, either. Let's try again.

Lilian Monroe lives at home with her two children, three dogs, and twelve chickens. Her husband likes to work shirtless in the back yard. His sweaty, gleaming abdominal muscles ripple with every movement and he—

I'm sorry. I have to stop. Fine, I'll admit it. That one isn't true either.

How about this: Lilian Monroe loves thinking about men with rippling abdominal muscles serving her hand and foot, and she wants you to think about them too! She is an avid reader, writer, and lover of all things romance.

She loves everything from bad boys to billionaires. Her books are packed with sizzling-hot heat, action, suspense, and everything from second chances to single dads. She hates cheating and loves a good happily ever after (and rippling abs).

The couple: Asher and Penelope

Romance genre: royalty; second chance
Series: Royally Unexpected
Length: 270 pages

Plot: Penelope is Queen of her country, becoming so at a young age, and now she is also a young widow with no children and no prospect for children. She is the ice princess that everyone names her. Asher is a businessman, more and more ruthless as he tries to make his father acknowledge his worth. The two of them knew each other when they were very young, at boarding school, but Penelope had to leave to take the crown, and Asher was terribly scarred in a fire at the school. They meet again by coincidence at a wedding and begin to see each other, nothing formal. But then a surprise pregnancy and a betrayal later, and their relationship and hearts are in danger.

Commentary: I loved the story of their earlier friendship at the boarding school - that was a sweet touch.
This author absolutely always brings me to tears - there's something so poignant about her characters and the absolute heartache they feel when faced with impossible circumstances. Penelope was a queen, yes, wealthy and privileged. But despite all that, she still didn't have love or the child she desperately wanted. And for all that Asher had wealth and control in his life, he didn't have his father's love, and never would, despite all of his trying. Their hurts both centered around the bond between a parent and child, and yet, ultimately it would be the love between a man and a woman that healed those hurts. That said, Asher absolutely made some asinine decisions; his grovel though - pretty good!

Grammar/formatting: one thing I noticed that bugged me a little - at one point she goes into a room wearing pants, and then in that same scene talks about rolling her designer dress up over her waist.

Previous book in the series: Lone Prince
Next book in the series: Rogue Prince

4.5 Stars ⭐️

Royal romances are my new favorite and I have Lilian Monroe to thank for that. Ice Queen is Book 8 of her Royally Unexpected series and is an interesting read on so many levels. For one, I enjoyed the reversed roles, she was royalty and he was the commoner, and for two, their love story was not sensationalized.

Penelope is Queen of Nord. She has been since she was a child. Widowed at a young age and barren, she appears cold and detached. But is she though? Someone who feels the way she does cannot be frozen on the inside. Penelope is a queen first and foremost and a flesh and blood woman second. In the seven years since her husband’s death she has not wanted or craved a man, until him. He is Asher. Her childhood friend, the boy who owned her heart and who knew her before she inherited the crown.
Asher is a man who has suffered and known pain. His scars are visible for the world to see and they consume him, until her. She sees the man he is and desires him. They are perfect for each other on so many levels but nothing is easy when you are a royal.

Watching Penelope come to terms with her feelings, putting herself and her needs as a woman first made for a touching and sweet read. And watching Asher prove to be the perfect man to stand by her side, made it a sexy one too. Ice Queen is a must read royal romance and gets the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

Queen Penelope of Nord attends a wedding and reconnects with a old school friend who she last saw when she was 10 or 12. She left school to ascend to the throne; he stayed behind and was left disfigured by a fire. Fast forward 25 years. He's now looking for business connections. He omits that's why he's at the wedding; she's naive enough to not understand why he'd be at a royal wedding (and even I questioned that). She's facing intense pressure; calls for her head/dethroning the monarchy and she's got personal issues (infertility, loneliness, grief) that cements her rep as the Ice Queen.

I didn't love these two at all nor the boring business crap that should have been more interesting. Nor did I love the lack of addressing her worries about how she deals with the pregnancy. These days what they did WOULD NOT FLY.

A Frozen Retelling with an Accidental Pregnancy?!

Yes, please! That’s exactly what this book is. Penelope Stone becomes Queen of Nord at a very young age after she loses both her parents in a car accident, swept away from boarding school the day before a massive fire that permanently scars Asher Gerhard, son of a ruthless businessman and known as one himself, mercilessly taking over floundering companies. After running into Penelope at a wedding and sneaking off to reminisce about their time at boarding school together, their relationship builds until Pen finds out a secret that tears their relationship apart, right after she finds out she is pregnant with his child!

I love a good accidental pregnancy story and this one did not disappoint! Bonus that it was a Frozen retelling (loosely based). This was the first book I’ve read from Lillian Monroe and it was the 8th book I believe in her Royally Unexpected series, which are all loose based retellings. I’m also a sucker for a broken hero, so this book had everything.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars! Loved every page and would have finished it in one sitting if I didn’t have pesky things to do like laundry and make dinner. Lol.

*** I purchased and read this book through Kindle Unlimited and was NOT provided a copy from the publisher or author. All thoughts are independent and my own. ***

At ten years old, Penelope's life changed overnight and she became Queen after her parents died. Leaving school behind she started on the path of ensuring her life was devoted to serving the kingdom of Nord. Heartbreak has followed her with infertility and the tragedic death of her husband in a skiing accident. Turning her heart and demeanour to ice. She rules the kingdom void of emotion, not a wife, not a mother... just a queen.

Asher has been attempting to prove himself to his father despite not being perfect. Scars covering a third of his body following a fire at school when he was younger. The same school where he met and became friends with Penelope. Bumping into her after a twenty-year absence at a wedding. They chat and catch up, with their old attraction to each other resurfacing. Hiding in a staff break room they let their chemistry ignite, however, Penelope lets details slip about her kingdom to Asher. Which is the very information he needed to gain from the owner of a business they are merging with. Getting what he needed he leaves the wedding without so much as a goodbye.

Furious that she allowed herself to acknowledge her emotions with Asher she is angry to find out that he is in Nord on business. Although he tells her he wanted to see her too, she isn't convinced by this but lets it go. Unrest in the kingdom over lack of jobs has Penelope thinking of a plan to solve issues, with Asher a possible solution. But Asher hasn't been upfront about his business interests - what will this mean when it comes out? Add in an unexpected pregnancy they are in for an emotional journey.

The ice Queen melts

Queen Penelope years ago decided a happily ever after wasn’t for her. She loss her husband in an accident. She spent years trying to conceive an heir only to have her body fail her. So she locked all emotions down and put her soul into her country.
Asher a successful businessman lived for his next take over to prove to his father that he deserved the family business. He was ruthless and aggressive. Although he felt like he owned the boardroom he felt alone. When he was twelve he was burnt in a fire that scar over half his body. He hates the stares, the disgusts and even worse how is scars bother his own father. To want approval from ones father drains him every day. Then one evening he meets his childhood friend Pen In a garden of roses. She’s now a grown woman who rules the kingdom of Nord. The two passions unites and he suddenly feels alive again.
This is another story by Lillian Monroe with a fairy tale twist. I liked the character of Penelope a great deal. It was quite nice to watch her character melt after years of being a literally Ice Queen inside. Asher was witty, handsome and their chemistry was very well written. A miracle occurs , bbt secrets are kept which makes their relationship fail before it really begins. The story and conflict was resolved beautifully and I admit the tale was one of my favorites of Mrs. Monroe.

I’ve loved this series from the start! Another spin off into Nord, with its link back to Farcliffe, it’s as addictive as the original stories, so much so, I’ve read this in a single sitting, I just couldn’t put it down! Pen and Asher’s story had me hooked!

As with all Lilian Monroe’s books Ice Queen has a HEA (we all need a bit of escapism and love at the moment), however she takes you on an epic journey to get there! Ice Queen is no different and I loved it! Pen is an emotionally damaged Queen who will have you crying buckets for her. After tragedy struck 7 years earlier, she’s locked herself away for the good of her country. Asher is an old childhood friend, but someone who carries his own demons with him. Their damaged souls, coming together, the makings of a great love story Don’t be fooled however, love is never an easy road, so be prepared, they have to work for it! This book is steamingly hot. Ms Monroe knows how to spice up her stories and light up the pages!

I’ve been a fan of this series since the beginning and I’ve enjoyed every instalment. If you are new to the series, These can be read Stand alone, so don’t be put off that this is Book 8. If you do start here, I can guarantee you will work your way back through the series, so you are in for a treat!

“Ice Queen” is the next book in the Royally Unexpected series by Lilian Monroe. You can enjoy it as a stand-alone, although if you go backwards through the series you will have learned some things about a few of the other characters from when they are mentioned in this story.

In this story, the royal character is a widowed queen in her very early 30’s. Queen Penelope’s husband years earlier died in a tragic accident, and they’d never had children because a physical condition left har infertile. Even though she has brothers whom she loves very much, she has locked down her loneliness and sadness behind a façade of cold aloofness she presents to the world. Asher, a childhood friend who has lived with visible injuries from a fire at boarding school, is a man whose scars are both visible and invisible. When life brings them together, these 2 childhood friends who are kindred spirits and both wounded souls, find that the adult chemistry between them is overwhelmingly intense.

Asher is every bit is vulnerable as Penelope, and in order to reach their HEA they both have to be willing to lower their defenses, trust in love and in one another, and take a big leap of faith. There is a lot of emotion packed into this story, and a beautiful happy ending.

This is book eight in the Royal Unexpected series. You don't have to read the other books to enjoy this one but would recommend reading at least book seven since Wolfe in book seven is Queen Penelope's younger brother. Each book is tied to previous books so you will see characters from previous books. I love this series. Every book has been entertaining and fun to read. This one is no different and it's guaranteed to hit you hard in the feels. This is my new favorite in the series.

Penelope is Queen of Nord. Asher is a commoner. This is a bit of a change from the previous books so I really liked that. Normally royalty for the previous books have been males. Penelope has ruled Nord from a young age. Her husband has been dead for the last seven years. She has ice water running through her heart or at least that's what most people think. She never thought she'd find some new until Asher came back into her life. But by bit she starts to thaw for her childhood friend and crush. Asher has his own demons to battle. Can these two damaged souls help each other heal.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

There is so much that works about ICE QUEEN especially if you have been following the royal romances from Farcliff and Nord.

Penelope and Asher’s story is special because they both need light amid the darkness in their lives. It was so fitting that Pen describes Asher as turning making everything seem to be in color again, and Asher sheds years of hurt and self loathing with a few words from Pen.

But the sled has to hit some bumps in the snow before Pen and Asher can admit their feelings. There is betrayal, lies and maybe a well deserved slap. Pen is a Queen and has to put her kingdom first.

The book gets off to a bit of a slow start, but the momentum builds and the story takes that interesting accidental pregnancy twist. Asher has life altering decisions to make and takes a remarkable path as such.

I enjoyed this very easy read. It was the second book involving the kingdom of Nord, and I am starting to prefer Nord over Farcliff because it is so elemental and unique.

I received and advanced copy of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review about it.

This book is phenomenal and I absolutely loved it! A great story of loss and lies and finding love again. Penelope and Asher were best friends in boarding school until she was called home to Nord to be Queen at age 10 after the death of her parents. The following day, Asher is badly burned in a fire at the school. Years later, they meet again at a friend’s wedding. The two will continue to cross paths and it will get harder and harder to resist the chemistry and pull between them. Business will bring him to Nord and into Penelope’s arms but when things finally are looking up and the two think they will finally get their heart’s desire, someone else will find a way to ruin it. It will take a big gesture but Asher will prove to Penelope that he is worthy of her love and will do anything to make sure she knows that what he feels for her is real. He will also give her the one thing she never thought she would have - a child of her own.

I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

I must admit I am a HUGE fan of Lilian Monroe and her accidental pregnant fairytales!!! I also have to admit I have been waiting for Queen Penelope since reading the book of Wolfe & Rowan. Considering that...I was overwhelmed with the story between Pen & Asher. I loved the icy, cold, closed Queen who thaws because of the fire between her & her childhood friend/crush whose literally been scarred by fire. Their reconnection although unexpected leads to opportunities built on lies, causing heartache for both Pen & Asher. Just like all great HEA’s by Lilian Monroe, you know the heartache & desperation will occur for the characters of the tale she has beautifully written, but rest assured you can be confident in the reconciliation she will also provide. I love these fairytales and the feeling of warmth I inevitably have after finishing it. Love the characters, their story, the heat & passion & reconciliation.

This is book 8 in the Royally Unexpected series, and is my favorite. This book brings us Queen Penelope, and Asher. They knew each other when they were in school together until Penelope left. There was a terrible fire, and Asher suffered greatly. He never lets anyone see him without clothes on. Penelope is the Queen of Nord, and she is terribly lonely after the death of her husband 7 years ago. Asher sees Penelope at a ball, and the two of them sneak out and have fun - just Asher and Pen, like when they were in school. Asher has scars that you can see, where Penelope has scars that you can't see. However, they need each other to heal their wounds. I loved how Asher brought Penelope back to life as well as Penelope looking at Asher's scars, and just seeing the man she cares for. This is an amazing read and you MUST not miss this book. I did receive an arc for an honest review.

The Ice Queen did not disappoint. Penelope has a very Elsa quality to her. The frozen, emotionless Queen, destined to spend her life alone, reunites with a childhood friend who’s also resigned himself to a life of work and loneliness. Asher is a broken hero. Both Asher and Penelope have scars from their past. Ashers are visible, Penelope's aren’t as easy to see. They reconnect, and see that they are both very much still alive on the inside. I loved the very vulnerable side of Asher. Feeling unloved and unappreciated by his father, and ashamed of his burns, Asher knows what he feels for Penelope is very real and he will do anything to keep her even if he thinks he doesn’t deserve her. Penelope sees past the scars and falls in love with the man Asher is. The Queens duty to her kingdom, and Asher’s duty to the family business threaten to keep them apart. Love finds a way. Beautiful story. Start to finish.

At age 10 Penelope’s life changed forever her parents died in a car crash and suddenly she was queen she left behind her boarding school and her best friend Asher. Years past when they run into each other at a mutual friend‘s wedding feeling spark and they have sex Penelope sure it’s a one time thing that it will never happen again except for when Asher shows up and Nord a few weeks later she’s shocked she wasn’t expecting him here as she had told her he was too busy to visit. Times are tough and nor and the people are protesting as unemployment are on the rise when Penelope becomes up with an offer for Asher and his company to take over the minds she make sure he knows that they have to stay professional but his time goes on that line gets harder and harder to keep in place and then of course when you had a baby into things it gets complicated no matter what it is

Kinda let down by this book. Yes it’s a good story line how they knew each other since they was in school together and what’s happed to Asher and the things he’s been throw. But I guessed what was going to happen. I do think it’s crazy how pen family didn’t know about Asher as they went to school together. Siblings do talk about people they met throw school. How pen become queen and things she went throw before meeting Asher could of been better.

Loved the other 7 books but this book kinda let the rest down. Her duties as a queen come with rules and other things. Just think this book was rushed.

This is an ARC review. All opinions are solely my own.

Ice Queen by Lilian Monroe was so delicious!! I thoroughly enjoyed Penelope as the strong queen. This cover is so beautiful.

Penelope is the queen who thinks she's just there to rule after her husband dies. That is until her old school mate, Asher, comes along and wakes the sleeping desire. Penelope wants him "ferally." Possibly the best way to describe desire I've seen in a long time. The desperation in chapter 5 is palpable.

This book is hot and sweet all at the same time. I kept rooting for Queen Penelope to get her happy story. Even a monarch deserves that.

Love this story. I’ve read several of Lillian’s books but this shot to the top of the list! I couldn’t put it down. Both Asher and Penelope are broken and when they meet again after 20 years they instantly feel the connection they had as children. A man tormented by never feeling he’s enough and a woman, a Queen, driven to push her feelings down and empty from her tragic past. Together they make each other whole. So good!

I love all of Lilian Monroe's books, but this one was really great. Queen Penelope has had a difficult love life and her subjects see her as the Ice Queen. She is aloof and closed off until she gets reacquainted with her former school chum, Asher, whom she sees at her cousin's wedding. The characters are well developed and the plot is nicely unfolded. I highly recommend reading this book; it was well worth it!

Another winner from Lilian!

I love Lilian's writing and eagerly await her new releases, none more so than this one. The queen of Nord suffers from the same affliction as I do - PCOS - and at times it was if I was reading my own thoughts on these pages. A well crafted, sexy emotional read I devoured with relish and once again a delicious hero I'd love to have for my own! Thank you Lilian for being such a wonderful writer.

Ice Queen...

Royally Unexpected book 8. The Queen finds love. This book was quite a delightful read. As royalty rules a personal life is always under the microscope. Penelope is cold cause to some extent she has to be. And Asher is cold cause people aren't always nice. But Hades hey come together based on deceit yes but it evolves into something else. Lots of drama, angst and twists.

This is an excellent storyline with two damaged main characters. Our heroine appears to be cold, lonely, and barren, while our hero was seriously hurt in a fire. These two come together over the years and the chemistry is growing. There is a bumpy road to a HEA, but these two flawed characters overcome their issues to get it. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

Ms. Monroe outdid herself on this story. I felt that I truly got to know the characters of Queen Penelope. Who she was and how she had to sacrifice for her crown.
Asher was such a fantastic and well developed character. These two souls reconnecting and seeing the beauty of each other was a fantastic storyline.

She was cold.

The queen was cold because she was lonely. Glad Penelope and Asher reconnected and found love for each other. Asher's dad was just too greedy and let work consume him. I did not like the way he had treated Asher in the past. Asher could not stop the event in his life that changed him when he was a child. Seeing Penelope brought back sweet memories for Asher.

I finished reading this series' nine books. All of them were enjoyable. extremely lovely and fascinating tales. After completing one, I eagerly anticipated the following. The narrative is entirely different, despite the title being the same. Reading it keeps you engrossed once you get going. exceptional author I'm sure I'll read more of this author's novels.
