Esme will not be used again, certainly not as fodder in a war that has nothing to do with her. When she makes a mad dash from the field of battle, she becomes a deserter, with nowhere to go except deeper into trollkin territory.
Drazak the orc and Han’zir the troll have lived a quiet, peaceful life together on their farm—until they find a human woman sleeping in their barn. When Esme convinces them to let her stay in exchange for work, Han’zir is excited about their new “pet” human. But Drazak is inexplicably drawn to her, and fears what his hunger could mean for them when Han’zir has already refused his life pledge once before.
It isn't long before Esme begins to feel at home in this idyllic place. But she’ll soon find she can’t escape the war forever.
This is a super steamy, M/M/F monster romance (45k words) that incorporates characters from previous novels but can be read as a standalone, and takes place during the events of Book 1 and Book 2. It features two MMCs in a relationship, one cinnamon roll troll and one grumpy orc, and a sweet, kind-hearted FMC. You'll find an emotional book with size difference, mating bonds, breeding, and a happily ever after, set against the backdrop of war.
Lyonne Riley writes super steamy monster romance, fantasy romance, and sci-fi romance. She lives in the middle of nowhere with her spouse and two dogs, writing spicy fairy tales.
"I will walk to the ends of the earth if it means we can have her back."
I loved every moment of this book. I was already excited to read this but it surpassed all my expectations.
The romance was perfect, the characters were likable and fun to read, and the spice....IT WAS SPICIN. There was just the right amount of conflict and drama and a HEA. Although I could have read another 200 pages of them. 😆 I just didn't want it to end.
This book follows three main characters. Esme, the female human who has spent her life as an object and a punching bag. Drazak, the abrupt and grumpy male orc with little to no tact. And Han'zir, his romantic partner and giant cinnamon roll male troll.
Esme frantically deserts the field of battle she is forced to march on and is eventually found by her monsters, the supposed enemy. Reluctantly, they shelter her, and together they bumble through communication barriers and biases while trying to understand their growing attraction to each another.
I love the language barrier trope, so I had so much fun watching these characters struggle through communicating properly. It was also really satisfying to watch Esme gain her confidence back in spite of her past experiences and find her place in the world, and for these monsters to finally find their missing piece in the most unexpected form. This book was a whole lot of fun to watch unfold, and while there was some third act drama, I wouldn't consider it a stressful or frustrating amount. The spice was hot and there were a fair amount of spicy scenes.

I received an advance copy of this book for review consideration.
I think this is the best one yet! I love a good why choose and a MMF at that is just the icing on the cake! Needless to say I ate this up!
Lyonne Riley excels at two main things with her Trollkin Lover series is the world building and packing months of time and story in less than 200 pages and now making it feel rushed! For world building each book shows a different part of the world from a different prospective keeping it fresh and exciting. In this installment we get the harsh realities of war through the eyes of a human servant and a pair orc and troll farmers. We see how the kind and grand chief use their people as pawns with little regards for their lives and how that effects them. We also see the lengths people go during war to survive.
The second thing is that Lyonne Riley can put months of relationship growth and development in less than 200 pages and make it see so natural! Yes the concept of fates is in this series but it is just used as a way to solidify the relationship not to force it. I also love how she doesn’t outright tell you months have passed but she mentions in different way depending on the book. In this it was by mentioning the crops growing and the season passing and later pregnancy.
One thing I love about why choose romances is seeing how each different personality interacts and gives to the relationship and we definitely see that here with how Han’zir mentions that he leads with his heart and is the r emotional support giving Esme and Drazak what they in an emotional way while Drazak leads with his body and is the protector and provider. Esme is the glue that keeps them together!
Highly recommend this book! Definitely my favorite of this series so far!
I was given a free arc copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review
Lyonne Riley brings a clever balance to all her Trollkin Lovers stories, and Keeping the Human's Heart was no exception. The characters were interesting and multifaceted, each with their own clear voice. The plot moved at an engaging pace and had the perfect amount of conflict to keep you on the edge of your seat. The romance was a sweet slow burn, with the spice performing a steady crescendo as the story progressed and OH MY GOODNESS was it hot! Drazak, Han'zir and Esme were the perfect combination and I found myself disappointed at the end of the story because I wanted to know more about them.
MF Telise!!! Ahhh it made my heart so happy to see her pop into this book.
Also, the MM were so spicy and sweet- i just love a MMF dynamic. Another amazing story in the Trollkin Lovers series 🫶🏼
The MMC’s (a troll and an orc) are in a loving relationship when they come across the FMC, who is trying to escape war and conscription. Eventually, they realize she’s the missing piece between them and… you know the rest! 😉
I love MMC’s and their dynamic- one’s a grump, and the other is easy-going and playful. Riley does a fantastic job relaying the deep love and history between them, and slowly integrating the FMC into their lives without it being obvious or cheesy. I wasn’t expecting the slow burn with the fated mates trope, but I honestly enjoyed that. Not everything is instantaneous, and real love and connection needs time to grow.
Seriously though, I can’t even imagine taking an orc AND a troll at the same time 😬 but man, she does it 😅
This book was so cute!! A throuple of fated mates story including a human, an orc, and a troll. While this story included war time violence and struggle, it was still such a sweet love story. Also… very spicy. Definitely pay attention to trigger warnings, but give it a try!
“After all this, I know one thing: I am not an object to be used. I make my own choices. Maybe some of those are poor choices, but at least I'm the one who decides them.”
"You could run to the end of the world and we would follow you. You are our mate, Esme. Our star. We cannot live without you."
Thank you so much to Lyonne for this ARC opportunity!
Keeping the Human’s Heart was amazing! This entire series is chef’s kiss. I am a sucker for size difference, breeding kink and why choose. And this book gave me all of that and MORE!
*cough DP cough*🤭👀 Esme, Han’zir and Drazak were great characters and their chemistry with each other was steamy. The way they balance each other out and come together as a little family is very heart warming. I don’t think I will ever get enough of this series.
I’m in my monster romance era and this book did NOT disappoint. I ate this book up in less than a day. The story follows the FMC Esme who escapes war & in the process stumbles upon Drazak & Haz’nir an Orc & troll who take her in, in exchange for work. As the story develops as does..everything else 😏. This book is super spicy - would probably give it a 4/5 for the spice - but it fit in well with the rest of the story. It’s not completely spice-led which I loved & the character development was really good. It’s a nice, soft monster romance with really good contrasting characters that work well together. I will absolutely be reading this again.
I’m pretty positive Lyonne has to write in the world forever because I can never leave these Trollkin and their humans.
Keeping the Humans Heart I found to be super sweet. Our Troll and Orc were very caring and loving towards each other and then Esme- they were so in 1000%.
If any of these families were going to have more than 1-2 whelps, it’s going to be them and I so hope it is.
Lyonne Riley is truly one of the future stars. She's already a great writer but more people should recognize her talent. She packs drama, angst, love, and a story all into a novella. That's talent. Her short books seem like a big adventure.
Drazak the orc and Han’zir the troll consider their relationship to be just fine until they find human Esme hiding in their barn and realize she just might be the one thing they've been missing.
Esme escapes her cruel master by being forced into becoming a soldier for the human war against the Trolkin, but when given the opportunity to flee, despite the consequences, she runs. Drazak and Han’zir are just trying to survive and keep their farm running despite the Trolkin forces stealing its resources for reparations in the war. Can three individuals from different backgrounds find true love in each other? Read to find out!
Lyonne Riley has hit her stride with the 5th book in the Trolkin Lovers series! This was such a quick and cute read. I read it in one sitting, kicking my feet and giggling the entire time. Drazak was the perfect grump, Han’zir the loveable goof, and Esme was just pure sunshine. I think this was my favorite book yet for this series.
If you haven’t read the Trollkin series yet move it up on your tbr, it’s SO good!! I loved this one so much, it might be my favorite so far. Gimme a good language barrier romance any day and I’m going to have a good time. Add in delicious spice, cozy vibes (even though there’s the backdrop of a war,) and two sweet cinnamon roll monsters that love each other as much as they love our FMC and I’m kicking my feet in excitement. Seriously this is so good and I can’t wait to read more in this world!

4.25 stars. Esme, the female human lead, has been a poorly treated household drudge before being conscripted into the army to fight against trollkin. Scared senseless, she runs from battle, desperately entering the forest so she isn’t killed for deserting. Finding a barn loft a safe refuge, she hides and wonders what to do next.
Drazak, the male orc lead, and Han’zir, the male troll lead, have been in a relationship for years but Han’zir is sure he has a mate somewhere and hasn’t fully committed to Drazak. He’s also wanted a pet for a long time. When he finds Esme hiding in the barn, he convinces Drazak they can keep her as a pet.
But, over time, both males realise they feel something more for Esme than they should for a pet, mostly because Esme is so much more than the two dimensional being they first assumed her to be. Esme is grateful for the space she’s been offered on their farm and happily contributes, just glad to be in a place where she’s not being abused. As the males teach her their language and they share lives, their relationship develops into something more.
Then Esme realises the endearment they use for her is “puppy”…
This story is tri POV, well written and edited, and an emotionally engaging, fantasy romance. I enjoyed Esme’s determination to create a safe life for herself. I also empathised with their reaction to finding the males initially regarded her as a pet. I enjoyed Han’zir’s optimism and the joy he finds in life. I enjoyed Drazak’s focus and sense of responsibility, and his care for those he considers his. I enjoyed the significant character development that facilitated relationship depth. I also appreciated the setting, and the philosophical commentary on the similarities of the effects of war for both humans and trollkin.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
"It's as if the whole world is shifting around us, rearranging to make room for us, and we are fitting together in the place we were always meant to be"
It's an amazing talent to write a book with less than 200 pages & 3 POVs and still manage to have a full story that doesn't feel rushed or cut short. 👑
In fact, as usual, the story is rich with amazing world-building (that is built through all the books of the Trolkin Lovers Series but still each book has an atmosphere that doesn't need the other to feel complete), has endearing characters, perfect pace and has that mix of cozy while angsty recipe. 🙌✨
~ ROMANCE & MAIN CHARACTERS 💖 ~
I'm a sucker for MMF romance, but here the balance between all of them is really perfect. ✨
~ I love how Drazak is a soft grumpy ~ How Han'zir is so lighthearted and joyous ~ How Esme is sweet and way more tough than she gives herself credit for.
It's truly beautiful how they complete each other 🥰🦋
~ SPICE 🌶️ ~
Well, the spice begins almost immediately (not between all the MCs) and is quite steady throughout the book. 🔥
Before this book, I was in a bit of a book slump…a book hangover if you will. The last book was too intense and fulfilling, anything after just couldn’t compare. So I had to do something! Maybe a genre change and something quick to read? And just like that, the heavens opened up on Instagram and my feed was flooded with Lyonne Riley’s new book.
Troll erotica? Why not. For a novella, I was impressed. The story was truly well developed which you rarely see in fast smut reads. I enjoyed reading about the MMCs and their relationship before Esme enters. Esme is introduced in a crazy way, but she fits so well in their dynamic. I especially loved the pull or the stars aligning when they all finally come together.
With Drazak being the orc, he was the most loving and delicate out of the two trollkins. It kind of shocked me. I loved how Riley wrote his desperation for Esme.
All in all, this has convinced me to start with book one in the series and when I get to this book again, I will DEFINITELY be re-reading.
I love a good triple threat, and this delivered 🤌🏻
The story follows Esme, a deserter of the war between humans and trollkin who refuses to die as fodder on the front lines. She’s wounded, pushing forward, and finds herself in the barn of a Troll and an Orc couple.
Both Males have equally different reactions to Esme, but as time goes on and they begin to learn more about each other and learn to communicate, it becomes clear that care, tenderness, and attraction blossom.
But what happens when Esme finds out her troll has been endearingly calling her a puppy? Can she overcome the feeling of being a pet and the trauma of her past master?
All in all the book has the best of all 3 for me. I love sweet, tender moments, a great story/plot, and some filthy spice to get me through. If you love a good MMF, you’ll adore this one. I also love that all of the triggers and possible kinks are listed upfront and in the open so that you can easily see if it’s something you’ll enjoy or be able to handle.
I love the writing and can’t wait to dive into the world from the beginning, as this was my first trollkin book!🖤
This is the 5th book in the Trollkin series but it's risen to be my second favorite. Capturing the orc's heart is still number one for me but this one is definitely second. I enjoyed reading about Drazak, Hanzir and Esme. It didn't hurt that this story involved my favorite poly dynamic, MMF.
Lyonne Riley has yet to disappoint me and I believe her writing has only gotten better the more books she writes. The only thing I didn't like was Esme running off after finding out what Keva meant. I'm sorry but she was being overdramatic as hell. I get being upset about being referred to as an pet but she could've just talked it out with them instead of running away and then getting caught by the military folk she was hiding from for being a deserter. They're adults. Open your mouth and communicate. That whole portion was dumb but unfortunately, Lyonne loves the miscommunication trope(she admitted to it) so we'll never be free of characters making impulsively stupid decisions from this author.
Outside of that, it was a great story and as usual I look forward to her next contribution.
Lyonne crushes it every single time with each new book in the Trollkin Lovers series. In this story, the first MMF relationship, we meet Esme escaping from her forced enlistment in the war and stumbling onto a farm run by Drazak, the orc, and Han’zir, the troll. I’m always intrigued by how the MCs will get over the human/Trollkin prejudices and language barrier and this one has a really sweet workaround. When you see the word keva, you’ll understand. 🐶
I love that this story also focuses on the connection between Drazak and Han’zir before Esme’s arrival. And then we get to see that connection shift and expand to include her. Speaking of… there is so much delicious spice, between the different pairings and all three together.
If you have not jumped into this series yet, please PLEASE do it! There’s also a cameo in this book by one of the MCs in the first book (I LOVE HER!). These books are basically lit candy and you can’t stop at one.
I was lucky enough to receive this arc, and I truly enjoyed this storyline. If you have read the rest of the series and liked it, you are going to love this as well. This book has all the feelgood vibes, sizzling hot smut, and a rather severe storyline caused by the war. Remember to read TWs!
I, myself, am a poly girl at heart. The more the merrier. These storylines are always tricky, especially when we have one couple opening up their relationship to a third. This was done beautifully! Yes, they did fuck up from time to time but the way this issue was handled was done so respectfully. I also felt like we truly got to know all the characters well enough (which can be a struggle in why choose romances) and they were different enough that I didn't randomly forget who's chapter I was reading.
I already knew I enjoyed Lyonne's writing so it was a blast reading this when the story itself drew me in from start. Easily 5 stars!
A softhearted former maid deserts the war between humans and trollkin and seeks refuge on a farm in trollkin territory.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
I was a bit hesitant to start this one as I have not yet read a “why choose,” but I never should have doubted Lyonne Riley. Once again this fantastic author delivers a riveting and heartwarming narrative paired with heapings of spice.
The romance was incredible! Drazak and Han’zir’s relationship not only grows to include Esme, but grows deeper between the two of them because of her. She truly is the third star of their constellation, causing them to shine brighter together.
The HEA was a perfect ending that wrapped up the story in a satisfying way, but also left me craving more from these characters.
As much as I liked the premise and backgrounds of the characters in the installment, there were some inconsistencies that continually took me out of the story. The language barrier was initially done well, with pantomiming and slow learning of words. Then the characters would switch between having full conversations communicating complex ideas to appearing to have only the most basic ability to communicate. The grovel was a lil lackluster as well imo, although the did back it up with actions.
Spice: 4.5/5

Esme and her men♥ This was the most spice-filled of the series, but it's got plenty of fantastic plot too ♥
Esme is on the run from the war and winds up wounded, hiding in Drazak and Han'zir's barn. They are less than happy but take her in as their new puppy.
I loved the relationship between Drazak and Han'zir; it was sweet but missing something, and that was Esme! The angst was so good, and I loved the longing they each went through. They all wanted each other, but the guys didn't think they should want a human, and Esme didn't want to butt into their existing relationship. I love a language barrier trope, in this case, it caused some drama, but it made the whole story so engaging. I knew that the guys would make things better but my heart was very sad for a bit.
They were all willing to give up so much to be together. It was a beautiful little story, and the spice was SO hot. I love the way they work all together, they really were made for each other.
This series gets better and better with every installment, and I am invested. There wasn't as much lore in this one as far as the magic or the mystery of humans and Trollkin being mates.
This is book 5 in the Trollkin Lovers series. We have some mm/mf/mmf scenes and of course they’re done so well! These relationships are always built with such love and care I devour every single book!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5
The human, Esme, who had already lived a life of servitude, is forced to be in the war between the humans and the trolls. She decides to run making her a deserter. She finds a farm and hides in the barn to sleep where unbeknownst to her a troll and an orc couple live and work. Han’zir is more happy go lucky whereas Drazak is more serious but when they find her they decide to keep her... as a pet. Esme offers to work in exchange for lodging which they accept. I don’t think any of them expect to fall in love!
4.5❤️ The first one, the 4th one and this one are AMAZING!!!! These books are just beautiful. Cute romance, simple plot with a very good pace. Not useless pages. Not long. Cute characters (MMC, regularly)
Absolutely loved this story. Although this is the 5th in the series, this was my first read by Lyonne Riley. Esme, her troll, and her orc are definitely worth the read. Drazak and Han'zir are perfect for each other and then adding Esme into their little constellation made their lives complete. It was an adorable story and it made me laugh and cry.
Cute little love story. Human woman fleeing the front lines of the human/trollkin war stumbled onto the farm and into the lives of an established Orc/Troll relationship.
It was short, but the characters really wormed into your heart as they overcame prejudices to create a beautiful life.
*I received an eARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily*
- Monster Erotica Romance - MMF - 1 Cinnamon Roll Troll/1 Grumpy Orc/ A Sweet, Kindhearted FMC. - Language Barrier - Found Family - Multiple POVs
This is the fifth book in the Trollkin Series, but can be read as a standalone. I personally had not read any of the previous books, but I’ll be honest, it took a little bit for this one to grow on me and I am not sure if that is because I hadn’t read any of the previous books or if it was because wasn’t a huge fan of the “puppy” comments. But by the end I found myself not wanting to say goodbye to Han’zir, Drazak and Esme.
