Corre el año 1930 y la universidad estadounidense de Miskatonic envía una expedición al continente helado de la Antártida, un territorio inhóspito repleto de sorpresas y misterios. El grupo está liderado por el doctor Dyer, experto en geología. Además de los trineos tirados por perros, la expedición incluye varios aeroplanos y otros aparatos de última tecnología, entre los que se cuenta una máquina perforadora, desarrollada por el profesor Pabodie, cuyo uso arroja asombrosos resultados desde el primer momento. El profesor Lake, experto en biología, repara en el patrón estriado de algunos fragmentos de pizarra extraídos de las prospecciones. Convencido de que se trata de "restos de una forma de vida desconocida", se enfrenta a las objeciones del líder de la expedición y organiza una pequeña partida con la que se dirige a explorar la región noroccidental. A pesar de estar sujeto a las inclemencias del tiempo, el grupo de Lake realiza un sorprendente descubrimiento al adentrarse en las profundidades del continente antártico hasta entonces no visitadas por el hombre. Ante sus ojos se extiende una cadena montañosa desconocida compuesta por innumerables y altísimas cumbres negras. En el curso de sus investigaciones, Lake y sus hombres hallan fósiles de enormes criaturas en las entrañas de las montañas negras... La versión manga del clásico de Lovecraft.

Recensione collettiva per i quattro volumi

Ho deciso di variare un po' e prendere qualcosa differente dal mio solito genere: in questo caso horror. Questo manga si ispira al romanzo omonimo di Lovecraft, di cui ho letto qualche racconto molti anni fa. La storia riguarda una spedizione di primo novecento in Antartide, un continente ai tempi ancora misterioso e inesplorato. Gli esperti si imbattono lì in una cultura antichissima e leggendaria, e i disegni hanno saputo dare vita a creature bizzarre dalla testa a stella, gli Antichi, e i loro servitori, masse informi dotate di mille occhi. Ho apprezzato in particolare il terzo volume, in cui viene ricostruita la storia di questo popolo. Un'ottima trasposizione, quindi!

The long-awaited second volume of Eisner-nominated artist Gou Tanabe’s adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness will release this week from Dark Horse Comics. The two-volume series was originally published by Kadokawa Corporation in 2016-2017 and is not Tanabe’s first foray into Lovecraft or literary adaptations. In 2014, Tanabe adapted and illustrated Lovecraft’s 1921 short story, “The Outsider,” and The Hound and Other Stories in 2017. The artist has also adapted stories by Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov, and Garon Tsuchiya.

At the Mountains of Madness was written by Lovecraft in early 1931 and recounts a disastrous expedition in Antarctica in the autumn of 1930. As with many of Lovecraft’s tales, our educated narrator this time is geologist and Miskatonic University professor, William Dyer.

Trovo decisamente interessante l'approccio di autori con un retroterra culturale diverso da quello occidentale con l'opera di HPL. In particolare quando si attua una riduzione a fumetti di qualche racconto di HPL è interessante confrontare i diversi autori.
Non che Tanabe sfiguri rispetto a, che so, Culbard At the Mountains of Madness: A Graphic Novel ma quello che ho letto mi fa ritenere che il giapponese sia più colpito dalle dinamiche dell'azione, mentre il britannico è più interessato a ricreare le atmosfere che il maestro di Providence intendeva creare col suo romanzo breve.

Ad ogni modo la lettura scorre abbastanza bene, è gradevole e credo che la riduzione possa dirsi riuscita.

This is really part two of the review, since these volumes break the story into two chunks. The second volume starts as the main characters venture into the mountains, looking for their lost colleague, and stumble on the ruins of an ancient megalopolis.

Tanabe's art synced up pretty well with the visions that formed in my head reading Lovecratft's original. I was particularly impressed with his deep history flashback scenes of Old One civilization in its prime. While the book's all black and white, the fine details, design, and texture work manages to deliver a vivid and visceral feel to the art.

It was really great to read and view these two volumes. As I said in part one of my review, this may be the closest we get to a proper and faithful cinematic treatment of this classic tale. It did not leave me wanting... and I'm sure I'll be cracking the spine to read both again in the not too distant future.

Знову оцінка манга-адаптації. В другому томі краще не стало. Сцени ультранасильства представлені у вигляді наслідків ультранасильства. А оскільки все чорно-біле, то всі кадри перетворюються на якесь місиво.

Лейк ще трохи побув у історії, та й все, досить, тепер про рятувальну операцію, щоб витягти групу Лейка до кораблів.

Жахіття якось не відчувається. Саме відчуття страху тут передано одним способом - величезними наляканим очами. При цьому рятівники не бояться відновити табір біля печери, де з високою вірогідністю ховається ще купка монстрів, результати діяльності яких вони спостерігають от прямо під ногами у вигляді понівечених трупів дослідників крайнього півдня. Коротше, буває так страшно, шо не страшно.

Політ у місто Древніх залишили на третій том. Дуже сподіваюсь, що візуальний ряд полікується, і стане зрозуміло без додаткового опису, на що саме дивиться читач.

This was a beautiful conclusion and an adaption of Lovecraft's work. Like the first one, it helps to already be familiar with the lore.

I recommend this if you enjoy the world of Lovecraft, especially through some gorgeous art.

La impresionante conclusión de la novela de Lovecraft llevada a cabo con unas imágenes magistrales que nos dan un tour de horror por una ciudad perdida en el interior del Antártico. Después de descubrir a la mitad de su grupo geológico masacrado, el Dr. William Dayer y el joven Danfort salen en busca del posible único sobreviviente del grupo, para encontrarse con un a ciudad cíclopea cubierta por hielo. Un viaje al interior de la ciudad maldita los llevará al borde de la locura cuando descubran que en ese lugar olvidado por el tiempo, aún hay algo maligno ocultó y terrible. Pingüinos multados y ciegos, habitantes de la profundidad de la ciudad; extrañas criaturas muertas (¿o acaso aún vivas?) con cabeza de estrella de mar y un horror indescriptible nos espera a todos... ¡En las montañas de la locura!
