I purchased this book after reading a bunch of glowing reviews on Amazon. I had high hopes too but this wasn't what I expected.

(-) For one, the Kindle eBook had an unacceptably large number of grammatical errors. There were typos, words omitted, and a few sentences that didn't make much sense at all. It's difficult to get into a book and stay with it when you're having to battle through pages and pages of improper syntax.

(-) What also bothered me about this book was the somewhat stilted dialogue. Characters would often make unnecessary comments such as, "Let's go!" before performing their respective actions. It wasn't bad, but the fact that it kept happening was a bit of a turn-off.

(-) THE PLOT! It could have been so much scarier, so much... well, more! It was like Frankenstein gone awry or like a bad episode of American Horror Story. I could sum up the whole book in a few short sentences.

Sometimes that's a good thing when the reader can easily break down the plot in order to think through and digest the story. In this way, the story doesn't become littered with extraneous details. But Deep Within I found to be rather simplistic.

(-) I don't really know if you could categorize this book as a horror novel. I feel horrible saying this because the author, Charles Day, is a member of the New England Horror Writers Association. Guys, I realize that having a monster going around and maiming and slicing people up is an aspect of the horror genre, but I can't say I was really feeling the thrill- and I'm one who is very hesitant to pick up any sort of horror novel!

(-) There are one or two plot holes that confused me but I'm only going to mention one.

(-) There were too many Italian stereotypes. For instance, the Italian family was running a pizzeria. No, really. And their father, Fat Tony, happened to be in the mob. And in case you don't quite understand that these people are Italian, you will encounter the word "Italian" often and will be confronted with a good many Italian stereotypes. Be prepared.

(+) Lastly, one freebie positive. I feel like all I gave were negatives but I can assure you that I recognize that it is difficult to sit down and write a whole book.

If you're looking for a psych "thriller" about a monster with piercing blue eyes that's not too engaging but still an interesting read, may I present to you: Deep Within!

Psychological-Thriller/Horror Phenomenon!

Charles Day’s “Deep Within” is an instant cult classic in the psychological-thriller/horror genre. Brilliantly crafted with unforeseen and intricate plot twists, this novel is sure to please readers of all genres and especially the horror community. Charles Day’s refreshing writing style offers something for everyone. His expertise on the horror/psyche is that which deserves to be greatly recognized. He not only has the astounding ability of storytelling, but he lets nothing slip between his fingers.

Charles Day seemingly effortless weaves all the important aspects of a story: character development, plot line, events fitting the story, avoiding clichés, expressing emotion, and so much more! “Deep Within” is a gripping thriller that sucks you in and doesn’t let go. Upon completing the first chapter, you will find yourself immersed in Charles Day’s twisted world created by the deeply sculpted and brilliant mind of his mad scientist character.

We’ve all heard stories of mad scientists since we were little, but this one blows them all out of the water. Charles Day brings the psychological thriller/horror genre to a whole new level. He has set a new standard for fellow authors to follow, and frankly it’s a bit scary. As an avid reader of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub, Richard Matheson, and other such authors, I can honest say that I have never read such a well-written, well-developed, and can’t-get-it-out-of-my-head novel. Charles Day will go down in history as the author who set the bar high and others strived to follow.

His characters will haunt your psyche for the rest of your life… you will not just read this book, you will climb inside and live in this story. There are aspects that will terrify you, just as many that will intrigue you, but most of all there are aspects that will capture your mind and pull you along (possibly kicking and screaming) on an unforgettable adventure. This book isn’t just a great read: it’s an intense experience.

There is no doubt that Charles Day is a master of his craft… I feel honored to be a reader in his time. I can’t wait to watch as he excels in this world! Every reader of this genre along with every writer of any genre should read this book. There is so much to enjoy, so much to learn, so much incredible quality to his writing, amazing plot developments, and events that cater perfectly to the story without needless fluff. So what are you waiting for? BUY. THIS. BOOK. NOW. And join me on an epic thrill ride with no comparison.

“Deep Within” will be read by many generations to come. Even after reading the last chapter it continues to linger in the back of your mind as all good horror stories do. No matter how many times you read this book, it will never get old! These books are few and far between, so enjoy and indulge.
