Friends. Pirates. Slavers. Who can they trust? Their lives will depend upon it.
A notorious slaver has acquired the latest in airship design, an Imperial Condor Class transporter. This is a ship designed to change the world and if the slaver transforms it into a warship then no one will be safe. Anywhere.
Magda and Ascara have travelled the world as pirates. An attempt on their lives brings into question who can be trusted. Who is a friend? And who are their foes? With only themselves to rely upon they set out on a daring mission. They join forces with the pirates to stop the largest sale of slaves and gifted ones.
Can they rescue the slaves? Will they stop the creation of a super warship? And will their friendship be enough to survive against the odds?
This is the second prequel in the Towers of the Earth Fantasy series. It brings together many of the characters who are a part of the Towers series and fills in the details of how they come together.

Another super fun novella! This series has a continuing story arc, so they are best read in order. You can start with book #1, as it was first published, but I decided to start with the prequels ‘A Pinch of Salt’ (Book #0.1) and ‘A Hint of Hope’ (book #0.2). This is the second prequel, so the world and its magic are familiar and there was even more room for action!
Magda and Ascara are a solid duo now and I enjoyed getting small additional glimpses in their personalities and abilities. They make me want to know more about them. The plot is good, but I won’t go into detail because of spoilers. I’m not the biggest fan of novellas in general, as there is just not much room for details and story building, so I’m happy the next book in the series is a full-length novel. I look forward to reading it!
There is no romance in this book, but I easily recommend it to fans of action, fantasy and steampunk!
Magda and Ascara, now sky pirates, learn there is a pirate faction that wants them dead. They survive. There are always questions to which there are no answers. Magda's memories return and Ascara helps her move through the constant pain of loss. Round's use of language allows me to see the airships and sense the danger. An exciting swash buckle experience and of course Magda, without trying, is given the lead when disaster strikes. A fitting prequel to the series and I've got a good sense of Magda and Ascara.
‘A Hint Of Hope’ is the second prequel in the Towers of the Earth Fantasy series. I loved being back with Magda and Ascara, as they join with pirates to free thousands of captured slaves from a tyrannical regime - and in the process try to capture the world’s most advanced airship. The mixture of steampunk, the gifted with special powers and an exciting adventure had me hooked from the start. We get to find out more about the world they inhabit and about the people living in it. The more I find out the more I want to know. This enthralling story was full of wonder and imagination and it has made me desperate to find out what comes next for the pair. Roll on the next instalment.
A Hint of Hope continues the adventures of Magda and Ascara. As of the end of A Pinch of Salt, they had hooked up with some unusual pirates. In this new prequel, they’ve been with the pirates for a while. “Pirates” may not be the best term to use, since they really do all aim for a greater good…..though their method of doing so may be a bit piratical.
The story starts with betrayal and quickly moves to a critical mission to save and free slaves and prevent a war. The relationship of Magda and Ascara is strengthened and we learn more about both of them. And the flirting continues. But most importantly, we learn about the origin of that fabulous airship that graces the pages of the Raven, Fire and Ice, book 1 in this series (to be re-released in march as A Touch of Truth). I love airships in my steampunk and this ship is one of the best!
A Hint of Hope is a prequel novella that is a complete story that stands on its own, but is even better as a part of the entire series.
The novella was a freebie for the subscribers of Nita Round’s newsletters. I love this series, so I was thrilled to download this story and share my unbiased review.
I love this series, which is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. This novella prequel furthers the adventures of Magda and Ascara, cementing their friendship and loyalty to one another. They go through a lot to get to this point – betrayal, change, adventure, near-death. Like the blurb says, we see how Magda’s crew comes together. There are some additions as well, but we also learn the origin of the airship Verity, and (sort of) how Magda takes Verity to where we met her in Raven, Fire and Ice.
In the first prequel, I got a crush with Nurse Alex Banham. This second prequel even without nurse Alex Banham I found that the prequel still interesting. After they got their own ship, Magda Stoner becomes a Pirate Captain, and Ascara d'Jharaena ael Korphen becomes Chief of Security to Magda. I believe the next book will be very interesting and I can't wait to meet the funniest nurse Alex Banham. Worth reading it!
Yes. Hits the spot. The ship is here. And the crew. Really enjoyed the pace. Lots of action, easy to read and for a moment I really did think that they would not survive. And I've read the next book so I know they do! There wwere, for me, some really emotional parts. Poor Magda.
And there it is....Magda remembers everything and Asara was there for her, as it should be. Fun little origin story of Verity and the bridge crew. It's been amazing, but I am finally free of this series until the next one is published. I feel both sad and liberated. Until next time.
This was a fun and fast paced read. The two main characters work well together and their chemistry is developing a firm foundation. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: full-time writer, out of your comfort zone, non-US/UK setting, not a romance, butch character
We learned how Magda and Ascara met in the last prequel, and this was about how they became crew members. They met some special people during this adventure, and they continued to follow the fate set in motion in the last novella.
Magda and Ascara's "ride or die" friendship began under unusual circumstances, but their loyalty, respect, and support happened quickly for knowing little about each other. That was a draw for me in the first story, and continued throughout the series. Other readers will have appreciation for that, as well.
4 stars. Great follow up. I know the series from here on turns into a poly relationship between Magda, Ascara, and someone else. I’m super curious to see how that comes to be. This series so far has been a wild ride and this one was even better than A Pinch of Salt. We get more characters, more action scenes, and more development and bonding between Ascara and Magda which I loved. These two novellas were a great warm up and lead in into the actual series so I’m excited to get to book one.
PIRATES!!!! My favorite! I loved it. The big action packed tale of Magda and Ascara's pirate days and the capture of the Verity. It's fun and exciting and touching to see the development of their relationship. Also, BIG PIRATE BATTLE!
I love this entire series. A steam punk / fantasy with AMAZING MC's that each have their own individual strengths that when combined are world changing. If any of this is appealing, pick one of this series up.
