Christ...
I should have known what I was letting myself in for after reading one of the authors other novellas, Fertile Fields. Somehow, it slipped my mind. I needed more time to recuperate from that one, before reading this.
Four Hispanic college students: Robby, Diana, Jorge and Misti, enter unknown territory when they go on a road-trip from San Antonio to Californa. They are pulled over by a (fake) small town sheriff, who accuses them of being illegal immigrants, they're cuffed - and driven to a location up in the mountains/hills where there's a small town, unlike any other.
Each of them gets sold to some of the residents of this small community. Robby is taken to someone known as, Doc. I visualised the 'Doc' as a cross between the surgeon in the 'Re-animator' movie, the chef on the Muppet Show - and Dr Frankenstein. He's got some of the most craziest experiments and projects in the pipeline - and its going take a while for me to eradicate those images from my mind; especially with what happens to Angela, one of the Doc's guests' who has been held captive for quite a while. This is worth reading just for that scene. Doc, and his 'barn of horrors' is the highlight of the book.
Diana is taken to Roy and his nephew, Scooter, who waste no time in having some fun with her. There's another person being held in their abode, Tina, who ends up doing a doozy of a pole-dance - doozy being the operative word.
Jorge is given to a small elderly woman, Gilda, who has the sexual appetite of a T-Rex.
And Misti becomes the property of Buck. I'm not sure what to say about what happens to Misti; except, it's not good. Well, it's not good for any of them - come to think of it.
What motivates the people in this small town, to do what they do? Well, we get a little insight as to why they do these horrific acts.
Each of the main characters go through some of the most torturous acts you can imagine. That being said, some of it was strangely amusing.
This is one hell of a gore-fest, with more fluids flying around in the first half of this novella, than you'll see at an annual porn convention - I'm guessing.
In summation: an over-the-top extreme horror novella, that doesn't shy away from the blood, guts and gore. It's not that realistic: because the human body can only take so much, before it goes into automatic shutdown. The victims seemed to last longer than I would have expected; considering the excruciating pain that was inflicted upon them. Plus, the dialogue was a bit silly at times. There's a sequel 'Return to Hell, Texas' - that I'll check out, sometime, to see how the story pans out.
