Ava Wakefield is a native Texan, living in Salt Lake City, Utah, with a serious sweet tooth for small-town romances.
In her free time, she enjoys all the great outdoors has to offer. From car camping to hiking and fishing, you can usually find her daydreaming of adventures that include hunky mountain men with dad bods.
When she's not out exploring, she loves curling up on the couch with her laptop and a hot cup of herbal tea while listening to Cozy Hobbit Coffee Shop music on YouTube and working on her next book.
Asher and Gemma both have obstacles to overcome before they can move on in love and in life. Gemma needs her memory to return and Asher must heal his broken heart. Can they work together to be friends or more? Look forward to reading the next book in this series. This story was such a delight to read with well developed characters and great world building.

A clean romance about a single dad and the boss’s daughter who came back home from New York after an accident which led to her losing her memories.
It started out with a bit of GrumpyXSunshine and I loved it. The back and forth between the FMC and MMC was so good. You could feel the tension through the pages of the book. The relationship between the dad and daughter was so cute. It was nice to read a story that was just pure sweetness and no spice other than kissing. Would definitely recommend.
This is the first book I’ve read by Ava Wakefield and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It was one of those books that makes you want to find some extra time during the day to sneak away and read. When I first met Emma, I wasn’t sure I would like her, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with her like everyone else. It’s hard to say more without “spoilers” so I’ll just encourage you to read it. Great story!.

When life hits reset on your memories, you may as well make some new ones by falling for the grumpy cowboy and his adorable daughter…
After a car accident that brings on retrograde amnesia, Gemma Carter is headed back home to the small town of Sugar Plum and her dad’s ranch. Well, she assumes the man who turned up at the hospital is her father - she can’t remember him or anything he’s told her at all. Even seeing the place she grew up doesn’t jog her memory. After the doctor recommends trying to do her favourite things, her dad gets his farmhand and neighbour Asher to teach her how to ride horses again. Babysitting this apparent city-slicker is not what Asher wants to do, but he’s hardly going to say no to his boss. And Gemma doesn’t really want to spend a lot of time with this grumpy cowboy. But as Gemma tries to piece together her old life and is met by a lot of friends and family wanting her to remember things from her past, she seeks comfort in Asher, who never knew Gemma before and doesn’t pressure her to be anyone other than who she is now. As Asher and Gemma grow closer, so too does Gemma and Asher’s daughter Hazel, the less Gemma feels the need to learn about her old life and her focus is solely on building a new life and creating new memories. Until someone from her old life arrives in Sugar Plum and threatens to ruin her new life…
Cowboys AND grumpy/sunshine? YES PLEASE, sign me up! Throw in a bout of amnesia and an adorable daughter and you’ve got yourself a must-read small town romance! I’ve never read anything from Ava before, but I thoroughly enjoyed getting my first taste of her work, and she’s definitely an author I’m keen to keep reading. And as much as I enjoy the smut & spice in my romance, it’s refreshing to read a clean romance, which Ava is known for.
Gemma and Asher had some fun chemistry as they both began open up to one another and let the other in, insecurities and all. Both have a lot of their own previous issues to deal with, and they manage to overcome all of that together. The addition of Hazel made their relationship ever sweeter - nothing like a single dad watching his love interest fall in love with his child to help him fall more in love with the love interest!
Amnesia can bit a little hit or miss when it comes to romances, or can under-deliver if the character’s memories come back early on in the story, but Ava had Gemma dealing with her loss of memories for the majority of the book. For Gemma, she went from trying to do things to bring back her memories to learning to live with the prospect that her memories might never come back, and that instead of focusing on the past, she should look to the future to create new memories and forge a new life. Ava crafted her story really well, and even though Gemma’s memories eventually came back and she had to deal with the crossroads she was suddenly at, I would have been totally satisfied if the book had ended without Gemma remembering her old life at all.
I can’t wait to see what other adventures Ava has planned in Sugar Plum, which will hopefully include a little update on where Gemma, Asher and Hazel are at.
If you’re looking for some swoony cowboys, an interesting small town, and some good ol’ clean romance, look no further than this grumpy cowboy and the town of Sugar Plum!
I enjoyed this sweet read. The story was interesting and the romance was lovely. Gemma’s father brought her home to Sugar Plum, Texas after a car accident in New York (where she was living) left her with amnesia. Asher, her father’s ranch hand and a single father, was tasked with giving Gemma riding lessons. As they spent more time together feelings developed, but there were still unanswered questions about Gemma’s life before the accident and what she really wanted. I appreciated the slow build-up of the attraction and affection. I felt that the effects of Gemma’s confusion and lack of self-identity were woven into the narrative and romance well. We really got a good glimpse into how disconcerting and disorienting it would be to have no memories and not know yourself. “I feel like a blank slate, not knowing who I am or what I was like. I’ve had to recreate myself from scratch.” Not to mention the pressure to try to remember. And how difficult it would be to fall in love with someone in that state, never knowing what was in their past or what might happen if they regained their memories. This story touches on a car accident, parental death, and parental abandonment. The male main character is a bull rider. I wanted to mention it for any readers sensitive to the subject. Asher’s role in that activity is an important part of his character and the story but there are only a couple of scenes where it is directly involved. This is a sweet and clean story with no harsh language.

I love a good (fictional) amnesia situation, the struggle of the character trying to bond the pieces of their old life and living a new one, and somehow trying to blend both. Add a hot, grumpy, single dad, cowboy and you have a winner combination for me XD
And the characters are just adorable, at first he's grumpy... But he turns into the sweetest grumpy ever. And they both try to fight the atraction for multiple reasons... Asher has a broken heart and trusting issues from his past. Also, he can't betray the trust of his boss (who gave him the opportunity of a new life). And, he knows she needs to recover first, she needs time to figure out her life and rediscover herself. And Gemma, she doesn't want to be a baggage in his perfect cowboy life and hurt him and his perfect little girl. She is afraid of her old self (what if she was a biatch? What if she remembers her past and want to go back to her old life? Apparently she ran away in the past, moved to New York and left all her Texas life behind, and she doesn't know why).
... So it's all a lovely slowburn.

I enjoyed the story 'The Grumpy Cowboy Next Door' by Ava Wakefield very much. It's about a woman who is becoming a top fashion designer in New York having a traumatic car accident that leaves her with amnesia. The story begins with her father bringing her home to Texas while she hopes to recover her lost memories. She does not even remember her father. Luckily, his information was on her when she had the car accident, and the hospital was able to contact him. Her father has his ranch hand give her riding lessons to see if that could bring back memories because she was once a very good rider, and it gave her a lot of joy. their relationship starts out with them verbally sparring with each other until they find themselves slowly finding things in each other to admire. She loves how sweet he is with his daughter, and he discovers that she is not a sooty city girl, but in fact, a sweet lady that seems more at home in the country than she would in a city. Unfortunately, until she gets her memory back, neither of them feels that she can move on.

Gemma Carter has been living in New York for 8 years now. When she is involved in a car accident resulting in amnesia, her father is contacted and brings her home to the ranch in Texas. He tasks Asher, a single father ranch-hand, to begin giving her riding lessons to re-teach Gemma to ride a horse. They are comfortable with each other and feel the attraction begin. But Asher has trust issues from a previous relationship. And Gemma can’t remember her past. Will the two of them work to overcome their hesitation to move forward? Will her father try to keep them apart? Or will Seth, who arrives at the ranch, claiming to be from her past and wanting to take her “home”, somehow interfere with the life Gemma, Asher, and his 6-year-old daughter Hazel, have been moving toward? Is Seth ready to destroy the future that was waiting to make the three of them a family?
Plot: After an amnesia inducing car accident, Gemma finds herself back in her small hometown, without any recollection of the place or the people. After being brought back home, she takes up horseback riding, after the doctor recommends doing things she used to, in hopes to bring her memories back. Asher gets tasked with re-teaching her to ride. He gets so frustrated with her, but finds himself thinking of her often. As they spend time together and make more memories, Gemma longs to stay. After someone from her past shows up to town, her memories come back. She is tasked with making big decisions about her future, including who she keeps in her life. What will happen as her memories come back?
What I liked: I liked that Asher and Gemma were mutually concerned about one another. I also loved their banter and the lack of pressure from one another
What I didn’t like: I didn’t like Seth. He sucked, especially when trying to lie about their relationship a second time
I really enjoyed Asher and Gemma. They were so fun together and I was invested in their story. I liked how her amnesia was treated a little different with an emphasis on learning to live now rather than losing time trying to remember what might never come back. I really liked the voice of it. There was a good feel to the narrative that I enjoyed.
I did consider dropping a star because it felt almost like it wasn't done to me. There were several times at the beginning of a chapter where I had to kind of reorient myself and figure out how much time had passed. There were jumps within chapters too that I found distracting.
In the end, despite these minor issues, I really did enjoy the characters and the story.
Gemma is coming home with her dad. At least that's what everyone says since she can't remember anything after the accident. He was listed as her emergency contact. Asher is one of her dad's ranch hands. One of the few people who didn't know her from before, and the one assigned to help her relearn to ride. Will she ever get her memory back? Why is it she left and never came back? What has her life been like? As she starts building a life and relationships without her memories, does she even want to remember?.

Brilliant writing! A really good , enjoyable feel good , gritty story-line . Asher is tasked with helping his boss’s daughter Gemma when the man brings her back home to Texas after an accident leaves her with amnesia. She has no memories of riding a horse or anything of her previous life . Of course she’s forbidden fruit so she’s the sweetest. He likes her sass as well as her ass. With his young daughter Hazel, Ash sees a bright golden meadow of a future….then in rolls Seth , a man claiming to be from her recent past and wanting to take her home with him….Loved it!.

I understand that this is a YA novel but my god was it immature. The characters are boring and the whole amnesia plot didn’t work. Yes, he’s her father, however, she has amnesia. She doesn’t know who he is and he takes her back to small town, Texas. Why was she so instantly comfortable with him and calling him “daddy?” There needed to be more awkwardness between them. Would have loved if she had hints of memories throughout. You also did see the two MCs fall in love. We were just told they were and we had to believe it. This book took me entirely too long to read it. I struggled picking it up. I almost DNF’d multiple times but pushed through. I wish I didn’t.
listen to your heart Of coures it's risky to fall for a person with amnesia, what will happen once they get their memories back? But can the heart really forget about feelings? Both Gemma and Asher require courage to take a leap of faith, Archer needs to keep his daughter's wellbeing in mind, they need to stand up against his employer aka Gemma's father's opinions. With so much on their plates to deal with, I was especially happy for them when they were rewarded for holding on in the end. I like books that not only entertain me but also make me think and count my blessings.
Can’t say enough great things about this book! I love the concept of Gemma having amnesia and having to figure out her life. This is a dual POV, clean romance and it is definitely a favorite of the year. I enjoyed Gemma having to find her new reality and leaning into things she had always loved (even when she doesn’t remember). Asher was the perfect grumpy cowboy. His character was heartfelt but he didn’t always like showing that on the outside. And let’s talk about how precious Hazel, Asher’s daughter, is. She is a cute and quirky character you can’t help but instantly love.
I think we all wonder at times what it would be like or how we would react if we suddenly lost all our memories. Ava Wakefield has given us that story and I think pretty accurately. Gemma is lost, things that should be familiar aren’t, people constantly trying to invoke a memory, unable to move forward or go back. Asher and Hazel are just what she needs. Will suddenly remembering the past allow her to stay and be in Sugar Plum? Her life there is very different from her life in New York City. I really enjoyed this book.
The Grumpy Cowboy Next Door - Ava Wakefield Read January 17th, 2024 - 236 pages
This is a story about Gemma & Asher. After Gemma suffers amnesia after a car accident, her father brings her home to help jog her memory and to help care for her. Asher works for Gemma's father, and he is a single dad to a daughter named Hazel.
The two of them bond until her previous boyfriend shows up and Gemma regains access to her memories - of how he really treated her, and it allows her to make a decision about her future with Asher & Hazel.
This was so good!! I enjoyed every page! I love how Gemma returned to her home and the events that took place to make that happen. I also love the way her memories come back. Also good is the way her old friends didn't have any hard feelings with the way she left after graduation. Love Gemma, Asher and Hazel. Great read!!.

This is book 1 in Wakefield's new series the Sugar Plum. A great intro to a new series. A sweet, small-town romance read with main characters Asher and Gemma. Well written, smooth flowing storyline. I loved how Gemma had to get her memories back and that both our characters had their own issues to overcome. Captivating and sweet - a lovely read that has me eager for more in this series!

A sweet, clean romance that would make the perfect Hallmark movie. The characters are heartwarming and adorable especially Hazel and with exception to the city slicker boyfriend. This book will pull your heartstrings and put a smile on your face. The cute and entertaining dialog was so fun. I really liked it!.

Ivy has no memory at all, so her Dad rescues her and brings her home to Sugar Plum. Asher and Hazel have memories - good and bad. How those three and Ivy's Dad move forward is the great story here. There's hesitations on everyone's front, expectations from those who knew Ivy before, and new feelings and joys in the present situation. It's all sweet, with some bull riding in there, too. Perfect ending.
Gemma wakes up in a hospital with no memory at all. The older man that has been coming around says he is her father, but she has no memory of him at all, much less of anything or anybody at all. Her father Henry has tasked his most trusted foreman on the ranch Asher, who has a six year old daughter, to teach Gemma to ride again since she was a barrel racing champ years in a row. There are so many sparks between the two, Henry is surprised the Ranch dosent burn to the ground. An incredible Rom-Com that will bring a smile to you're heart. Excellent book and a definite 5 stars
She has been missing and now she is back at the family ranch with her memories missing. He is the one who has to teach her to ride again and she says things as she sees it. Things will get complicated between them until a person from her past arrives. Will her memories return? What will it mean? Will they both run? See just how it will go
Gemma basically has to start her life anew. Asher and she clash from the first meeting. Hazel is an amazing little girl. The characters are well written and it’s not hard to dive right into their lives and emotions. The story held my attention from the beginning. I really enjoyed reading this book.

This was a well done amnesia story. I liked how it made me feel that things could happen the way they did for Gemma with her confusion and insecurity of not knowing family, friends and events in her past. It was a big hurrah to see her start to make her own new memories and get to know people around her and start new friendships with old friends.
Gemma and Asher, along with his daughter, Hazel, start off slow due to Gemma losing her memory because of a car accident. As time races on, Gemma learns to love her home town and falls in love with Asher. Life has a way of testing Gemma’s future when someone from her past comes rushing in. I found this to be a delightful, small town romance worth reading.
