A Reason To Stay

Rate this book
It takes a Navy SEAL's training to keep them alive, but when the mystery on the mountain is solved, will Viktor and Aiden's love story survive the fallout?

Viktor left small-town Vermont to become a Navy SEAL and had no intention of tying himself down or falling in love. A succession of men and women share his bed, passion and danger are his addictions, and he's the first of his team to run headlong into trouble. When his nephew witnesses a murder, Viktor returns home to protect his family and lands in the middle of an active case led by none other than the man he left behind. He can handle getting punched out by Aiden, but teaming up with the sheriff to find a killer is not on the cards. For Viktor, love is dangerous, makes a man vulnerable, and one mistake could get Aiden killed.

Aiden never expected to find lasting love with a decorated active SEAL, but he didn't anticipate Viktor would leave his bed never to return. Even two years later, disappointment simmers below the surface, and he never wants to see Viktor again. But, when seemingly unrelated deaths draw Viktor back home, Aiden has to find a way for them to work together despite their past. With Viktor's training and Aiden's local knowledge, they partner to work the case, but Aiden isn't just fighting the bad guys and mother nature; he's falling in love with a man who will surely leave him again.

What links the string of deaths in the Green Mountains? Can hate and distrust turn back to love? And if they make it down from the mountain alive, can Aiden persuade Viktor he has a reason to stop running?

I desperately wanted to like this book. R.J. Scott is a strong writer whose stories I enjoy. And, let's face it, a cop plus a Navy SEAL: what's NOT to like?

But, damn, this book didn't quite work for me. It may work for you, especially if you like gritty stories involving a mystery that feature a hard-edged MC but lack a lot of romance and heart-to-hearts.

Sadly, I missed the tenderness and passion. I didn't like one of the MCs (Viktor), and I thought the other MC, Aiden, deserved better. Viktor kept running, and Aiden kept trying to reel him in. Viktor needed to get on his knees and beg, but that never happened. I never understood WHY Aiden wanted Viktor.

The meat of the book focused on the mystery, with the relationship firmly on the backburner. As such, the relationship felt lacking and unbalanced, with barely any steam to speak of.

Even the epilogue was anticlimatic. I wanted roses and tears. What I got was:

First off, the cover snob in me would be remiss by not starting off by saying HOLY COVER WIN! *sigh* Aren't they both just dreamy? I loved having such clear pictures of both MCs going in. Yeah, some see that as being lazy, but it was perfect for me in this case and in my mind set at the time. And that delicious blurb had me jumping-up-and-down excited for months before the release date. I can't get enough of my beloved Law Enforcement officials and the Military Men make me crazy in the best possible way. Putting the two together is what I like to called a M/M Romance "Perfect Storm."

A Reason To Stay gives us a Navy SEAL, MC Viktor Zavodny, and a Sheriff's Deputy, MC Lieutenant Aiden Coleman, both on the rebound from each other and thrown together in the hopes of solving a case. This leads to some absolutely delicious friends to lovers to enemies confrontations:

He caught Aiden as he attempted to say something, and it was so easy to press the attack and lick inside Aiden’s mouth. For a split second, he sensed a shift in Aiden and his tongue tentatively tangling low groan of pleasure in his throat, but as quickly as it started, the kiss ended. Aiden shoved him away, and Viktor watched as Aiden wiped his mouth dramatically with the sleeve of his coat.

“Fuck you, Zavodny,” he snapped.

Viktor let his arms fall loosely to his side. “Or I could fuck you,” he said.

He never saw the punch coming.

Oh, the tension remained quite high between our boys for a good part of this book and it was crazy-hot to read and watch them dance around each other. *fans self*

Now, you will have to read the book to see which MC was in the right and which was in the wrong, or if it was equal miscommunication, or what-have-you as far as why these two obviously hot-for-each-other boys weren't together, but when the time came for the two of them to "see the light" and re-couple, I was sadly disappointed. Everything in my eyes to that point was just perfect, but that moment was ruined by a quick resolution with no apologies and no groveling *pulls hair out* and a couple of quick blow jobs. *sobs* (No! That's not romantic! That's actually not even hot!) It didn't work for me and left me cold. Bummer, because everything else about this book had me waving the FUCK, YEAH! flag.

I really, really enjoyed this book, but did get caught up on the resolution. I am still going to recommend it to M/M Romance fans. I know I'm a bit of a softie and I needed a bit more groveling before these two reunited, but I know the great majority of you will love this book and really dig the friends to lovers to enemies to friends to lovers to enemies, etc. story line.

It's not a poorly written story, but it's just not what I'm looking for at the moment. I want a romance novel with a hint of mystery, but this is the complete reverse. I also feel like the author has made some questionable choices regarding time jumps and what to show on the page versus what to leave to the reader's imagination.

But I think my biggest pet peeve with this one so far (it gets a qualifier because I may come back to it at some point and be proven wrong), is that I don't feel a meaningful connection between the characters. Viktor's a giant, closed-off douche bag that has never once cared about Aiden's feelings or put them before his own. Yet Aiden has fallen in love with him... twice. I'm sorry, but I can't help feeling as if Aiden deserves FAR more than what Viktor may one day reluctantly offer.

Le sigh. I just don't see the point in continuing to read a "romance" novel if I'm consciously rooting against the main characters achieving a HEA together.

This book was just what I was looking for. It had two great MC's and a plot that kept me glued to my kindle app. And while I loved both Viktor and Aiden, I understand why people didn't like him as much, or at all. He wasn't the easiest guy in the world to like.

There was sexual tension in this book and it was so hot. Possibly the hottest thing in this book, which wasn't a bad thing actually. Also, I have come to the conclusion that I really like when MC's separate for silly reasons and come back together in some way. Most of the time I'm able to understand the reasons, like in this. I think it could be the reason I was able to like Viktor as much as I did.

I thought the MC's were so perfect for each other, even if Viktor didn't want to believe it and Aiden tried to deny it because he was angry (totally understandable, btw). And I liked not knowing how they would get back together, or get together I should probably say since they were never a proper couple. Anyway, I thought the chemistry was definitely there and I enjoyed reading it.

I also think people who like a mystery will enjoy this. There is enough of that here to satisfy fans of mystery. Honestly, I really enjoyed that part of it too. It just kept me hooked and I didn't want this book to finish when it did. And I would highly recommend it for fans of the author and maybe if you enjoyed Sanctuary. Especially since this is a spin off and we had a couple of Sanctuary characters pop up in this one.

★★★3 I-Wanted-More-Romance Stars★★★

Pretty much my reaction to the book:
description

The blurb for this book and that amazing cover sucked me right in. I mean, a SEAL and a cop? Sign me up!!!
Buuuuuuuuuut...
The problem is that the story was broken down like this:
75% solving the crime
25% focusing on the relationship between the MCs
This is NOT an m/m romance in my book, at all. The MCs did not even get together until the 70% mark. Ugh!!! I did find the mystery/crime aspect in this novel very intriguing (missing ATF agents, dead guys on mountains, what the f*** were they doing up their kind of thing?, etc., etc.). Personally, I felt it was very well-done and unpredictable, but the crimes are not why I read m/m romance novels.

Also, the "romance" aspect of the novel wasn't very romantic at all. Until the 70% mark, the MCs were mostly fighting, like throwing punches to the balls and almost breaking noses type of fighting. Two years ago, when Viktor got hurt and went home to recuperate for about 6 weeks, he got together Aiden, whom he had a thing with in high school. (Aiden professed his love to Viktor in high school, Viktor told him he was a kid who didn't know what love was, and then laugh for the Navy.) When Viktor was home due his injury, Aiden once again told him he loved him, Viktor once again told him that Aiden did not really love him and that SEALs cannot deal in forever, and then Viktor left...again. Now, it is 2 years later, and understandably, Aiden is pissed at Viktor for walking out on him twice already but he cannot get over him; he still loves the man. Viktor also feels something for Aiden but denies it, which leaves all this tension between the two. Hence, all the fighting. When they do finally get together and Viktor finally admits he wants Aiden, it felt very rushed and did not really deal with all the issues they had. The epilogue was a bit of a soothing balm , but, still, it all felt rushed.

99p and I returned for a refund! Managed 28% tried to skim further but it was like chewing dry toast.

I think I've tried this author before, the writing doesn't gel with me, it's very matter of fact and had a habit of recounting things as though from a previous novel rather than a mere two pages before.

Main character Viktor (all his family appear to have random 'k's) has no redeeming qualities. I don't like him. There's nothing to explain his neurosis or his motivation; he's simply an arsehole. A big bad SEAL arsehole. He does things because he's a SEAL, he doesn't do commitment because he's a SEAL, if this guy has to take a piss...it's because he's a SEAL. My kindle wouldn't let me search the book but I swear it's mentioned at least twice per page. What he also is, is a selfish, aggressive, bully. Reminded me strongly of the WWF franchise Marine 3 without the comedy factor.

Adrian, big built, deputy sheriff, doormat. That's it. Little boy left behind forever keeping a torch lit. I could happily have watched Viktor knocked on his SEAL arse and crawl through stingy nettles to apologise - I don't see that happening.

I picked the book up expecting the mystery to take centre stage but it's not written to peak interest. I didn't care. Everything takes a backseat to the posturing of Viktor's SEAL ego.

Plus some really odd time jumps.

It was a struggle and I tapped out.

Sometimes heroes are fat heads. They will face bullets, knives, deadly mountains but the run as fast as they can from commitment. Viktor Zavodny was one such hero. As a navy SEAL, he faced all brands of enemies out to kill him and his team but he ran from Aiden, the man he loved for years, as fast as he could. I enjoyed this action packed story. The pace never lagged and it was good to see some of the guys from Ms Scott's Sanctuary series. If you've missed the Sanctuary series, it's a must read. I liked the relationship that Monika and Viktor had and the way that Viktor stepped in as a father figure for Ben. Aiden was a little too patient with Viktor in my opinion. I'd have hung his overly macho ass out to dry when he left after recovering from his injuries and hung my hat up with Sam. It wouldn't have made a great story but it would have been a sensible one. This story is longer than most of Ms Scott's books and I hope the trend continues throughout the series. Definitely worth the time to get caught up in the easy writing style and the signature HEA.

*** They'd been teen loves, but Viktor went off to the Navy.
Now the injured SEAL, Viktor, 34, is home to see his sister and her son.
Aiden, 32, has come back to be a Deputy in the small town.

Aiden and Viktor still have sparks, and end up in bed. Viktor's refusal to take it farther, and commit is the problem.
Aiden and Viktor are holy hotness in be, etc. Steamy !

But back to the Navy goes Viktor. Aiden's fed up. Then, when Viktor's nephew, 15, is injured and found near dead, near a dead man, Viktor comes home. He wants to be in on the mystery, and calls in favors, but Aiden wants him to stay out of the way.

It's deep in mystery that keeps leading to more trouble. What went on up on that mountain?
The answer will shock you.

It's a well written story, powerful, raw, spellbinding, sexy, and also has drama, action and violence.
You'll be riveted !
I highly recommend this book. ENJOY !

I liked it ok, and I'll probably read the next one, but I certainly wasn't wowed like I wanted to be. I didn't really feel the connection between the two MC's, and that lack made it hard to believe in many of their interactions. I also didn't really like Viktor that much. He was kind of an asshole. Maybe if there had been more explanation of his life as a SEAL, I could understand why he behaved the way he did, but as it was, yeah....he was an asshole.

But, all that aside, I enjoyed the story enough that I'm going to read the next book.

I love RJ Scott and this story has a great premise and mostly great characters. I connected to all of them except for Viktor and being that he was the other MC that was kind of a bummer. He's a Navy SEAL and while I get that is his whole life he ended up seeming to one dimensional for me. It gave me the kind of angst I'm not a fan of. The kind where one MC won't admit his feelings because he's just stubborn, it just ends up reading selfish to me and I wanted much better for Aiden. I like Aiden a lot and I hope we see more of them in the next book. I didn't get enough of "honest Viktor" to reconcile him with "selfish Viktor" who made up most of the story.

I caught quite a few "Britishisms" in there and while that usually doesn't bother me, since this story was about an American small town Sheriff and a Navy SEAL, serious American heroes, I noticed them more. One little nit picky thing I couldn't shake was when Viktor was walking through the town, commenting to himself about the awful cold and he references the flag being "flat and heavy on the pole. Not even the wind was enough to move the ice bound material." A man who defines himself by the service to his country would not be ok with this. Like I said, nit-picky on my part, and it doesn't actually say that he was referring to the American flag, but to a military man, flag etiquette is huge and I was so tied to how he defined himself I couldn't help but notice it.

I'll definitely be reading the next in the series, because I loved the other characters introduced, especially Sam and I want to know more about him for sure. I also liked that this was a full length novel and had a fully developed mystery that wasn't just a vehicle to move the romance along. I just wished there had been a little more romance so I could have connected with Viktor. There wasn't a lot of on page sex, which was missed just for the fact that I didn't see the connection between Aiden and Viktor as much as I was told about it and there weren't enough honest conversations to make up for that loss.

This book left me dancing with joy and happiness.

If I have to describe this book in one word it would be "Perfect".I didn't find a single fault in it and I would love to read this book multiple times.Why....

Story:A very fine balance of romance and suspense.A little of angst and humor.Loads of Chemistry between the two MC and banter which definitely made me squirm and swoon.Okay the scenes was not a graphic description but that doesn't bother me and I loved the entire package immensely.A regular suspense reader may not find the plot original but it was a rear one and very nicely put.

Main Characters :I am a total Vic & Aiden slut and proud of it...lol.Let me start with Viktor Zavodny SEAL unlimited,a mule headed arrogant prick who was obsessed with his job and stubborn enough to ignore love for it,though love was glaring right at his face since he was a teenager. Not once but twice he runs from fear of commitment but the third time succumbs to it and falls hard...idiot wastes so much of precious time.Victor's fears...

Viktor stopped. His heart twisted in his chest. Aiden accused him of lying? He wasn’t lying. What kind of relationship could a SEAL have with anyone? He’d been close to dying so many times he’d lost count, and no one understood that, no one could know what it was like to be him, to be part of a SEAL team.

“I’m a SEAL. We kill and maim and do shit you can’t even imagine in your worst nightmares and we do it well, but we don’t do love,”

Now Lieutenant Aiden Coleman, Sheriff.and who loves Vic since he was a teenager. One of the most sweetest MC ever.Every time idiot Vic broke his heart mine was broken with him but the delightful fact is his perseverance was rewarded....okay thats a known fact but to see Vic grueling on his knees was fun,but I had to be patient along with Aiden for that part to come.
So all in all I love both the MC very much and the last scene just blow my mind off

Side characters: All of them were pretty interesting and I am looking forward to read more of them. But me Whimpering and asking the author please write some more about Aiden and Vic please:)

Recommended to all and specially fans of Cut & Run,Hell or High Water series etc.

My reason to stay with this book was the cover!!

Hot Navy-SEAL and a cute deputy Sheriff!!! Packed up deal.....

Story:

The Navy SEAL Viktor was an ass 70% of the book. Aiden surely deserved a kinder man. I didn't understand the "love" for this man at all.

At 75% they go up the mountain to go after the bad guys and 2 blowjobs later Viktor found his sense again and was all of a sudden very much in love with Aiden.

This one was just "meh" for me. The premise...a cop and a SEAL. Bring it! It wasn't brought. Viktor walked all over Aiden and he took it. No once, but twice! No freaking way did Viktor ever redeem himself IMO. Aiden deserved so much better and way more groveling. This was more action than romance which isn't my personal preference but it's a decent start to a new series than I'll give another chance with the next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed a A Reason To Stay which has set the standard for another great series by RJ Scott.

There are a couple of elements to this story.

Firstly, it is a mystery. Something strange is happening up the mountain and Viktor, Navy SEAL, is going to find out exactly what it is and why his nephew ended up in a coma in hospital. His family is at risk and he will do everything and anything to protect them.

It is a romance, a story of second and third chances. Viktor and Aiden (who is now working in law enforcement) knew each other in high school, where Aiden had long term expectations. Years later when they reconnect, he still loves Viktor. But Viktor is a man haunted by his belief that as a SEAL he can't offer anything to anyone. He runs. It takes the threat to his family to bring Viktor and Aiden together again as they put their lives at risk to solve the mystery.

This is a story with lots of drama and action– murder, villains and true hero moments– but also soul searching as Aiden and Viktor fight their attraction to each other. The sex is super hot and the ending fabulous– i just love big moments that make people face the truth!

I enjoyed the blend of mystery and romance and the pacing of the book. Sure, at moments Viktor annoyed the hell out of me but the happy ending for these heroes was definitely worth it.

I am now very much looking forward to the second book, Last Marine Standing, due to be released in June, which gives us Sam's story.

A copy of this book was received from the author with no expectations of a review.

A review by The Blogger Girls.

Boy was I excited about this one. The cover is hot, the premise is hot, and the characters are both hot.

Aiden is a really sweet guy who started to fall in love with Viktor, their first encounter at 16. Unfortunately, Viktor walked away into the arms of his first love, the Navy. They meet up again while Viktor is home recovering from a combat injury, and there is some smoking hot chemistry going on here. They both feel it, but unfortunately, the same issues still remain with Viktor being completely committed to his life as a Navy SEAL. Viktor has convinced himself that SEALS do not love because their lives are always so up in the air. Aiden doesn’t seem to ever believe this message and never really gives up on Viktor.

This starts out at a pretty good pace, but once things happened to bring Viktor back, it slowed down for me through the middle when nothing really seemed to be happening. It eventually picks back up when the guys take action and head up the mountain to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Viktor’s injured nephew. There were some pretty unbelievable moments, but also some really hot steamy ones. I was a little disappointed in how quickly Aiden and Viktor resolved things, but loved the action at the end.

I also really liked Viktor’s team members and found I really wanted to go read the Sanctuary series some of them came from. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the rest of this series is headed.

Well most of RJ Scott's books are an auto buy for me and I was real happy when I saw that there was going to be a new series. A cop and a Navy Seal, what a great combination. I absolutely loved Aiden, what a sweet guy and really throughout most of the book, I really didn't think that Viktor deserved him. Viktor is just one of those characters that you kinda understand where his head is, but he is being such a jerk that you really, really don't like him too much. I kind of had a hard time seeing why Aiden wanted Viktor so much. I think the lack of seeing tenderness and those moments with these two added to that. Yes, they supposedly had explosive sex and all, but most of that was written off screen. I guess you love who you love and whether one is always pushing you away, you still love them. I am looking forward to reading more in this series and hope that we will see these two again and there will be a difference in Viktor.

A Reason to Stay is a spin-off of R.J. Scott’s successful Sanctuary books. I am the unique position of not having read any of that series. This book references characters from the previous series, but quite easily stands alone. The man referenced in the title, the one who needs a reason to stay home with his family and the man he loves but left is Viktor. He is a career Navy Seal who couldn't wait to leave his small hometown as soon as he graduated from high school and dive into the deep end of excitement and danger courtesy of the Navy. He lives for the danger and adrenaline rush. During his down time, he drinks and has indiscriminate sex with men or women, whomever is available, instead of heading home to see his sister and fatherless nephew. He isn’t a believer in love and won’t or can’t make commitments. The man he left in his dust alongside his family is Aiden. He is a deputy sheriff in their hometown, and he harbors dreams of love and marriage, particularly with Viktor.
A Reason to Stay starts with Viktor recuperating at his sister and thirteen year old nephew’s house after a bad knee injury. When he and Aiden meet for the first time in over a decade, the old sparks continue to fly, proving that both of them still feel the strong attraction they had in high school. As Viktor recovers, he and Aiden rediscover their compatibility between the sheets. Unfortunately, that seems to be the only place they are compatible. After several weeks, Aiden makes the same mood-killing mistake he made many years ago; he tells Viktor he loves him. As with the first time Aiden said those words, Viktor goes running off to the Navy.
Two years later Viktor’s nephew is found injured a short distance from a dead body in the forest on the mountain in his home town. Fortunately, he is in the US and quickly arrives to support his sister and parents. There's a mystery going on as to why the nephew was out that late at night and what he was doing on the mountain during a snow storm. Aiden is investigating the murder and Ben’s injuries and Viktor is, of course, butting in. He calls his connections at Sanctuary for help and tactical support. He is going up that mountain to investigate no matter what anyone tells him. Including, and especially Aiden.
When Ben regains consciousness and Viktor what he remembers, that’s Viktor’s cue to head up the mountain. Aiden tries to talk him out of it, but realizes he can’t, so he decides to go with him. What their investigation uncovers at the top of that 3800 foot mountain is surprising to Aiden but not to Viktor. The climax of the book, and also their investigation, is fraught with danger and is very exciting to read. It takes all of the skill and cunning that they both possess to get out of harm’s way and back down the mountain safely. Viktor, following his pattern, returns to the Navy as soon as he's able. This leaves Aiden following his own pattern: wondering if Viktor's ever coming back.
Sometimes heroes are morons. They will face any manner of danger: bullets, bombs, killer mountains, but then run as fast as they can from commitment. I liked the relationship that Monika and Viktor had and the way that Viktor stepped in as a father figure for Ben. That seemed to be the extent of the commitment he was capable of. It was the only way we got to see that he even had a softer side. Him in the hospital holding his sister while she slept actually brought tears to my eyes.
Aiden was way too patient with Viktor in my opinion. I think Aiden should have given up on Viktor’s overly macho self when he left, once again (!) after recovering from his injuries and hung my hat up with Sam. Although this outcome does leave Sam up for grabs in a future book. Just sayin’.
I enjoyed A Reason to Stay for the most part. I think it just leaned too easily on stereotypes. The characters themselves were easy to read, if stereotypical. The plot dramatic, though predictable. There also seemed to be a lot of almost-Britishisms. I know I made that word up, but there were many references that weren’t wholly American English, but nor were they wholly British. I imagine it’s difficult to write for a foreign readership, but I believe Ms. Scott has enough experience at this point to more clearly differentiate between the two and not just combine them. It made it a little difficult to read. This is a must read for the many R.J. Scott fans out there. For newer readers, there are many of her other books that I enjoyed quite a bit.

I am on a thriller rage. A Reason to Stay had a reason to read. Excitement, thrill, short on sex but good.

I cheered on SEAL Viktor and Deputy Aiden. They had years of an undefined relationship between them and a blind man could tell they deserved to be together.

I am bummed because for as long as I kept putting off the Sanctuary series, I feel as if I did my reading out of order. I would advise anyone about to read this book, that at times it can be read alone, but references to Sanctuary and it's people keep cropping up making me frustrated that I kept "researching".

Gonna enjoy the rest of my weekend in Sanctuary.

Several years after my first reading, I am back again. Nothing has changed. I still enjoyed Viktor and Aiden's story, but now with some time as a true reviewer under my belt, I now read critically and assign my ratings as such. So where my first reading garnered a full out 5 star for enjoyment, my second reading is a 4.2 stars.

He now had a reason to stay.

"I've wanted to kiss you goodbye for fourteen years." ~Aiden

As young boys on the cusp of adulthood, Viktor felt that Aiden was just too young to be thinking about forever. He had his life mapped out and it did not include a partner. Both men had a career they desired and Viktor was determined to make his happen.

Years later, an injury brought Viktor home and Aiden took this opportunity to exorcise the man he admired out of his system. But just when things were going well, a job had Viktor running and leaving Aiden all over again.

When his nephew was found injured, the mystery surrounding it had Viktor headed back home and back into the arms of Aiden. But would the younger man be as forgiving as the last time? Or had Viktor lost his second chance?

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.

I like RJ Scott, but her books are hit or miss for me and I can't figure out why. This book...this one was just words strung together. Sometimes they doubled back on themselves and repeated the same thing. Sometimes they were independent entities that didn't know what the other one was doing. For example,

Also, the book lists Erika Orrick as the editor. I hope she wasn't paid because you pay people to avoid shit construction like this: "Aiden stalked over to another man standing by a Forestry Jeep that was wrapped in so many layers topped by a large white coat he looked like a snowman." Really? The Jeep was wrapped in layers and... ugh just forget it. It's bullshit, first draft stuff.

Please. Just no more. I didn't really connect with these guys as a couple, sorry to say. The introductory chapters skipped right the fuck over what the time they were supposedly reconnecting while Viktor recovered. Then he comes back when shit hits the fan and they're all butthurt and pissy. Yeah, I get it. But Viktor? He's just an ass. In the end, all the really have is sex. That's how they reconnect both times and we all know that shit doesn't hold anything together.

2.75, rounded up. It's a shame. I wanted to like it. I probably could have liked it if the author and "editor" had paid more attention to detail.

Oh Aiden, Aiden, Aiden…why, oh why did you allow Viktor to treat you so “door-matty” not once, but twice AND then still give him another chance? I guess love causes you to act stupid sometimes (yep, it does it to all of us), and Cupid just needed to kick Viktor in the ass with a K-Bar, something the SEAL just wasn’t used to.

But once push comes to shove, and Viktor FINALLY accepts what he just didn’t seem to want or realize he already had, he gets his reason to stay. So, considering Viktor can’t do this himself, I will speak to Aiden on his behalf:

“I’m sorry that I hurt you. It’s something I must live with everyday. And all the pain I put you through, I wish that I could take it all away…..

I’ve found a reason for me, to change who I used to be, a reason to start over new, and the reason is you.

I’ve found a reason to show, a side of me you didn’t know, a reason for all that I do and the reason is you.”

Thank you Hoobastank for giving me the words I needed to shove down Viktors arrogant throat. Love that man but he really needed his butt kicked…hard.

PS. The mystery twist at the end was awesome...made the entire book for me. Love when that happens.

Read this very quickly. Its action-driven narrative made it very tense and suspenseful. I know people have found Viktor to be unsympathetic, but I found his characterisation very compelling. He is consistently portrayed as keeping his distance and yet the very nature of his actions contradicts this time and again.

I like how eventually, Aiden was able to see beneath his icy exterior and force Viktor to see that they were worth fighting for.

And right at the end, Viktor made me laugh. So good after so much worry about his chances of survival.

Really really liked this a lot. but how does one go to the backlist of R J Scott and even attempt a starting point?? She is so prolific... argh.

I barely liked either main character. Viktor was just too gruff, Aiden kept falling in love, and it felt like the author skipped all the good romance bits. She even skipped right past the five weeks that Viktor was on leave, and cut right back to Aiden declaring his love. We didn't get to see any of the sex, any of the relationship, any reason for Aiden to be in love again. And then the story picks up years later, and Aiden is all guilt trippy at Viktor, for doing what Viktor does. Then the rest of the book is all about the mystery, not nearly enough romance. It just didn't work for me.

2.5 stars. I really disliked Viktor. A lot. I didn't get what Aidan saw in him and wished he would find someone less emotionally constipated. Disappointing as I thought the plot was interesting and I liked the Sanctuary connection.

RJ Scott is one of my most favoritest authors around. I was super excited to dive into this one. It ended up being a little to much 'stuff' and not enough guys. :/

I will be reading more of this series tho..definitely not giving up on it yet.
