An amazing fantasy series from Melissa Pearl. This is the first fantasy series I've read from this author and I loved every second of it. These three books tell the story of the wilful princess Kyla and her best friend Jethro as they set out on an epic adventure to fulfil an ancient prophecy and save their home, and the rest of the world, from darkness.
I loved all the characters in this series - especially Jethro and Kyla. They were both strong people who weren't prepared for everything thrust upon them but had faith and persevered. I empathised with a lot of Kyla's internal struggles as she tried to let go of her years of anger about her father's death and accept Oron's light; even after accepting the light she still battled with the frustrations of her circumstances and it took a lot for her to have faith that they would succeed. I loved her attitude, her fierce spirit and the way her and Jethro would work as a team. Jethro was also a really great character. I admired his strength and faith even when times were tough. The romance between him and Kyla was also really good - I like it when lifelong friends become something more to each other. It feels natural and expected but makes the dynamics between the characters new and exciting at the same time. The other characters I also loved were the four elements and all the magical creatures - especially Flynt the dragon. Everybody needs a pet dragon.
The story itself was well-written and really easy to read. It was engaging and once I started reading I really couldn't put it down. It had great themes that ran behind the story: faith, hope, love, sacrifice and underneath it all - the assurance of a plan for salvation behind the events taking place. I loved the repeated message about how even the smallest light shining in the darkness can't be overcome - reminded me of the biblical passage about Jesus in John 1:4-5. He is the light shining in the darkness. There is always hope.
Overall - this is a fantastic fantasy series. It has action, adventure, magic and romance all blended together into an epic tale that's hard to resist. I'd highly recommend this series to anyone who loves young-adult fantasy with great themes and fantastic characters. I also highly recommend all Melissa Pearl's other books.
