As a maritime history speaker, Rossignol enjoys meeting audiences around the world and discussing the original news stories of the sinking of the RMS Titanic and other maritime history topics. In recent years Rossignol has appeared on dozens of ships in the Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean discussing the stories of the heroes of the Titanic, the explorations of the new world voyagers, the Bermuda Triangle and the history of piracy. Rossignol appears at the Titanic Museum Attractions in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri for book signings and to talk with visitors about the RMS Titanic. He has appeared on Good Morning America, ABC 20/20; ABC World News Tonight and in a 2012 production of Discovery Channel Investigation Motives & Murders Series, A Body in the Bay. News coverage of Rossignol’s landmark civil rights case, represented by Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz re: United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Rossignol v Voorhaar, 2003, included articles in most major news outlets, as well as a column by syndicated columnists James J. Kilpatrick. The story of the St. Mary's Today newspaper is now available in ebook and paperback: The Story of THE RAG! The book includes nearly 200 editorial cartoons that appeared over the years. This is the second book I’ve read by this author, like the last time I was looking through free books on the kindle website and saw this and downloaded it without realizing who wrote it. Like the first book I’ve read by this author, it’s a scare piece meant to make you think that cruise ships are ticking time bombs of crime. I have been on over 250 cruises having spent more that 110 weeks as a passenger on every type of cruise line you can think of and I have never been the victim of a crime nor have I ever met on board a ship someone who’s been a victim of a crime by a crew member or other passenger. Stupid things do happen on cruise ships , but they certainly don’t happen to the extent they do on land vacations and if you don’t do something stupid and or act stupid you can go on a ship and have a safe enjoyable time .
This book covers covers things that the reviews and cruise lines somehow avoid speaking of. While one may have a great time this does touch on things like crime aboard ship and in the ports that you stop at. The section on fire is lengthy and all the initials of agencies will drive you half mad and to try and keep straight. This book will make you think and give you an awareness that will hopefully ensure you have an enjoyable and safe cruise.
This book is a must have if you plan on taking a cruise, and even simply to visit any of the Caribbean Islands. It will expose to you the inadequate police and legal systems of these small islands and some of their parent European nations who control them. The crime and punishment is eye opening and alarming to say the least. A sexual crime is committed in a Florida port on a US child under age 12. Those required by our laws to immediately report the crime, the ships sets sail and then reports the crime. Then the ships makes a stop at a Caribbean Island which fines the individual and lets him flee to his homeland. Upon returning to the USA the cruise line simply lies and gets away with it! Their entire history of actions is get to sea where we are not under any nation's laws, land in a friendly nation and then lie about it. The truth is these small island nations will do anything to keep the ships docking in their ports as the shipping and tourism industry pays for the government almost entirely!
We think of the Virgin Islands as part of America, and they are. But it appears that little is done to really protect US citizens who reside there and their crime level are horrible and rising! Same for Jamaica and Porto Rico!
The really most shocking and informative section of this vital book relates to the cruise ship industry that hauls thousands of our citizens from various ports from Florida to Boston to the Islands, Mexico, Porto Rico, the the entire Caribbean sea area. As Americans we tend to believe that our government regulates cruise ships as we do our airlines and rail roads while forgetting they cruise in international waters. To further shock the reader you will learn they are "flagged" (registered) in several foreign smaller governments who collect cheaper fees (huge to their economy though) and which invoke very few "Rules, Regulations, Safety Standards or Laws" over those ships they register for use on the high seas. In fact there are several major players in their standards and even those who do attempt to exert influence have little to no real authority to force the cruise line companies to come into compliance! Our Coast Guard can inspect them upon entry into our ports and our lawn enforcement can investigate when in port, but not in international waters. So despite several major recent cruise ship fires and other major life threatening events the major cruise lines for the most part pay lip service and continue to sail these ships with little or no corrective actions taken!
The reader will learn a great deal that will better prepare them to provide for their families safety should they elect to travel via cruise line or fly into the islands for a vacation. There are some great hints on how to be prepared! A real MUST READ!
An interesting guide for those who are interested in cruise ships... It comes with a LOT of information!
The first 1/3 of the book covers topics like drugs on board, along with crime and violence reports for cruises. Whoa -- you never know who you're travelling with on a ship, until it's too late, perhaps.
Once section on drugs gave way to the author sharing some comments on the subject that he found online -- which was okay -- but I didn't approve of leaving the foul language to be printed, when it could have easily been edited. :(
As the book continues, we get into the "meat" of it -- fires on cruises! Everything about how the situation was handled, official reports, statistics, news articles and more, to give you an all-around view of the circumstances behind many fires that have taken place on cruise ships.
Sometimes "Fire Cruise" made the idea of going on a cruise sound scary! -- especially for a person like myself who has not been privileged enough (yet!) to vacation on a ship... but I definitely still want to! So it didn't scare me off, really. I've come away from reading this title a more educated person on how ship officials react to emergencies on board, and what a passenger should be cautious of and look out for in terms of dangerous shipboard events.
Recommended best for maritime buffs and your ocean-traveling friends.
I usually finish every book I start reading, but that isn't the case with "Fire Cruise". I downloaded the Kindle version and thought that because the author gave his credentials as being a "long-time newspaper reporter" and "editor", I'd found a book that would be first rate. I was disappointed. The major reason I stopped reading was the formatting was so bad it was confusing as to where one example or quote stopped and the next began - everything ran together. Also adding to the confusion was that the text for the photo captions were the same as the other text, and without any type of formatting break, I had to sit and figure out whether it was the caption or part of the information being presented. And if Mr Rossignol gives his credentials of being a professional writer, there should be far fewer grammar and punctuation errors.
