Wolfen

Rate this book
Man’s quest for genetic perfection has led to the creation of new subspecies, evolutionary steps up from humanity. Wolfen were the pinnacle of scientific achievement, redefining the limits of what it means to be human. Their counterparts, in turn, grew into the ultimate predators. Incapable of higher thought, converts were unstoppable in their need to breed and devour, and when they escaped, they brought the world to its knees.

Almost two decades later, humanity is on the brink of extinction and only the heartless survive. Rescued by two Wolfen brothers, Sinna must now brave the treacherous wastelands of North America in order to reach safety and the promise of a better life. But when an unexpected gambit forces them to separate, a genetic advantage becomes a liability, and the worst monsters turn out to be the ones who don’t have claws.

In the game of survival, Wolfen were created to be champions. No longer. The enemy keeps evolving, rendering old tactics ineffective, and the only rule left is to endure at any cost.

Good dystopian fiction shows us a world on its ear, so alien and strange that it jars us out of our normal routine. Great dystopian lets us see the normalcy left behind in the madness. Wolfen is such a book.

From the start, WOLFEN shows us a world gone incredibly, horrifyingly wrong, in a way that only people could ever cause. Genetic experimentation leads to a world in chaos (no spoilers--you HAVE to read it for yourself to appreciate what Alianne Donnelly has done) where humanity is no longer the dominant species--and yet, still possesses the most vicious nature.

The plot is engaging and the characters are very real. What really sets WOLFEN apart from other dystopians is the small things--little details that others overlook. Rather than detract from the horror of the world, they serve to enhance and magnify it. Scavenging for food in a world full of monsters that want to eat you is bad enough; scavenging for food and convincing two rough-and-tumble warrior-types to sit on camp stools to eat is somehow worse.

Wolfen is by no means a small book; indeed, this is one of its selling points. Too many authors eschew world-building to fall within the golden 70-80,000 word mark. Donnelly isn't afraid to use the space to show us everything, yet manages to avoid falling into the trap of burying us in description. Instead, she shows us the world through the eyes of her characters, from their experiences and viewpoints. The reader discovers the changed world in bits and pieces, never losing sight of the story.

A solid five stars for WOLFEN. If you like dystopian fiction but loathe information dumps and choppy exposition, then this is the book you've been waiting to read.

Wow! I don't even know where to start with this review. I guess I can start by saying I loved it. Ms. Donnelly has done a fine job building a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world that shares several themes common to the genre (zombie-like creatures, evil megalomaniacs who maintain control of their followers by using brutal henchmen, pockets of civilization struggling to survive in a wasteland)but also introduces new themes. Scientists worked covertly for years to create a super race that could be used as weapons, but their creations got out of hand. Some developed to become converts, mindless super fiends who craved meat and blood to eat. Others became Wolfen, stronger and faster than humans, who healed almost instantly from any wound.

I loved Sinna, heroine who has survived in spite of having a soft heart. There is an sort of anti-heroine, who I found complex and fascinating. Kudos to Ms. Donnelly for making her believable and appealing even though she has done some despicable things.

I wouldn't call this light reading. There is romance in it, and those relationships are important to the story, but this is not strictly a romance. It is a meaty fantasy story that gripped me. I started it last night and naturally read way past my bedtime. It is a lengthy work, so I did not finish it before I finally forced myself to go to bed. Today it was hard for me to focus on work. I barely bothered to eat lunch in favor of reading. Almost the minute I punched out I was back to reading.

If you enjoy end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it stories, I highly recommend Wolfen.

UPDATE: I just reread this, and it still makes my heart happy :)
Soooo... Read my original review below!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

READ THIS BOOK. If you love the post-apocalyptic genre, READ THIS BOOK. If you like heart-pumping action, READ THIS BOOK. If you like unconventional romance that doesn't drive the whole story, READ THIS BOOK. If you like monsters that go munch in the night, READ THIS BOOK. If you don't want to wait for the umpteenth million installment of a series to find out what happens to your favorite character, READ THIS BOOK.

Alianna Donnelly has written a book that revitalizes dystopian fiction. Using both narrative and third person point-of-views, you get a full look into how the world she's created shapes and molds her characters. You get to experience the realization that there is more to the current world than meets the eye, and watch as characters grow into their own, learning of the past and how it will shape their futures.

I'd recommend this book for anyone who may wonder what could happen if the government were to lose control of some of their most secretive and dangerous experiments, and as a result, set in motion the end of times as we know them. I'd recommend it to anyone who's ever wondered where and if they will ever fit in. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to be reminded of what it's like to find home, and learn that it's not a place, but the people you are with.

This book will make you feel things. I laughed, cried, screamed, and panicked with Aiden, Bryce, Sinna, and Desiree. And I hope you do too!

So I stumbled upon this book by accident, trying to find another book that someone recommended. I don't usually read books from authors I don't know anything about, but after DLing the sample, I was hooked. This book was...riveting is the word that comes to mind. I couldn't put it down, even though dystopian/post-apocalyptic is definitely not my genre. There was just a tiny hint of romance in it, enough to attract the attention of this die-hard romance reader, but it was mostly action which is what I was looking for at the time.

There were a couple of little writing quirks that niggled, like breach of 4th wall and such, but the book was so good, I couldn't dwell on it. My only criticism would be if she doesn't plan on writing anymore books in that world. There were a couple of little areas that felt a bit unsettled/unfinished, but I would forgive that if there is (hopefully) to be a sequel. Well done!

This book, you guys. This. Book.

I have been waiting for Ms. Donnelly to finish this book for so long, and it was worth every minute of the wait. I am just in complete awe that I am not able to coherently put into words how amazing this book really is. The characters, the scenery, the mystery, the horror, the world-building: it's done so so well without overburdening description. The pacing allows just enough lull between action scenes that it lures you into a false sense of security only to thrust you back into the action. There were several moments where I found myself sitting upright with my kindle inches from my face, gripped with both hands, barely breathing as I waited for a scene to play out.

I don't want to say too much and give anything away, except stop whatever you are doing and read this book.

It's been a while since I have read a book that crosses the borders of type so fluidly and Logically.

A story that builds as you would hope, full characters, scenes described, but not bogged down by the description and a flow that keeps you reading...just one more chapter.

Crossing the boundaries of science fiction, to horror, to comedy, to fantasy (and yes a bit of romance too) in an artful manner that I can only compare to David Gemmells Jon Shannow series.

In short, a very well recommended book and one I know people will enjoy.

**Word of caution: I'm not going to give you a synopsis of the book. I want you to read it and see why it's awesome for yourself, not get my condensed version of the book.**
I really don't know where to start with this book. Seriously, how do you find words to encompass a book so awesome? I guess I should give it a go anyway.
This dystopian tale is what happens when humans do what humans do best...corrupt things. Does that sound cynical on my part? Maybe, but reading this book, you can see how easily that many of our greatest creations have somehow been used to destroy. Hence the existence of the Wolfen and Grays in Donnelly's beautifully crafted world.

Because #science (yes I just used a hashtag in my review) is awesome, mankind wanted to create something supposedly meant to protect mankind. Instead, power-hungry, corrupted individuals took something good and flipped it on its head.

~Paging Dr. Awful. Paging Dr. Awful. You'll meet him when you pick this up. And no his name isn't really Dr. Awful, but I am recommending you pick this book up because its freaking awesome.~

Now where was I? Oh yeah...

You're introduced to Bryce, Aiden (brothers) and Sinna before the world really goes to hell. Of course everyone has their "lab names", but you get the immediate feeling that this entire setup (experiment) is a crapsicle nobody should have created. Yet, the Wolfen, inerts, and converts are here to stay--and take over--whether their creators appreciate it or not.

Let me pause and say something about the science in this book. I'm not big into science. I respect it, but it isn't one of those things I naturally gravitate towards. There's science in this book, but it is treated in a way that it blends seamlessly into the story and is not so over my head that I spend more time going "What?" than enjoying the book.

Now to one of my favorite things about fiction: world building. LOVE IT! Donnelly really took time (despite many people pestering her for this book) to think about what life would really be like once we stripped away all of our fancy gadgets and forced us into the modern dark ages. I love that she gave us glimpses into the every day lives of a variety of people, the things that humans had to go through just to meet their basic needs. I felt their fear when they ran out of water, when food was scarce or non-existent, or when their shelter wasn't safe enough to keep the monsters at bay.

As far as the characters...I love Bryce. I think it's because I like my males a little on the growly side :P Aiden is his brother's opposite. Where Bryce is a man of few words (I mean seriously, he rations them out like they ration out food), Aiden has to use all of his words... and maybe some of Bryce's. Sinna is a true caregiver, through and through. I think that is why there were times when I couldn't get on board with her and it was simply because her heart was too big in a world of messed/selfish up people. However, Helena (she's awesome in her own way) was right. The world needs people like Sinna.

I have one request for the author...Can I has--yes has not have-- another one? There are some characters I want to check on. Like Helena...and I need more Dez and Aiden. Please tell me there is more planned. I'm not picky. I'll take a novella lol

I don't even know where to begin with this book. All I can really say is how great this story is. I became enthralled with it from the beginning and if it weren't for my still having issues reading ebooks for long periods of time, since my concussion, I would have devoured this book in one day. It's hard to describe a book you love without giving away too many details or spoilers. But I'll do my best and I promise, no spoilers, because I want more of you to read this book.

The book begins in a medical facility in Chernobyl. Within the confines of this facility there a ton of doctors observing groups of children. It seems that after a lot of experimentation, they have successfully created what they believe to be three different species of humans: Converts, Inerts and Wolfen. Those who are Wolfen are the pride and joy of the facility. They are those who have successfully been created using the hybrid DNA and many of their behaviors suggest a pack-like mentality that is comparable to that of a wolf pack. Converts are those whose DNA has become corrupted and they are mutated. They are highly aggressive carnivores and show no signs of social order. These specimen are kept away from the others because of their violent outbursts. And then there are the inerts. These are the children who have had no transition into either of the other two subspecies. They don't show signs of increased pheromone levels or accelerated healing abilities, like the Wolfen children and they do not possess the mutated appearance or violent behaviors of the converts.

Sounds like I just gave away the whole book, right? Wrong. This is just the ground work that is explained in chapter one and it's not the whole story. As with most stories that include man trying to play God, something goes wrong and their facilities become compromised and overrun with converts. But that's just the beginning, because the converts manage to break free and wreck havoc on the world. They are an all consuming force to be reckoned with. Much like a zombie-apocalyptic book, the characters in this story find themselves unable to trust others. This is a story about survival of the fittest and how important it is to know who you can truly trust. But it's also an adventure and I enjoyed every step of it. I'm just sorry I've finished the book already.

Is it perfect? No.

I say this because I absolutely despised one of the characters and every time their point of view popped up, I found myself skimming. I was cheering others on to kill the character and be done with it. I felt no sympathy for their sob story and I didn't feel there was anyway they could have possibly redeemed themselves. But even though I'm not exactly happy about that character's fate, there was far too much good in this book for that to affect how I feel about the book as a whole. In fact, despite that character's strong presence and my utter dislike for them, I am still giving this book five stars. I enjoyed it that much. I cannot wait to read more from this author and since there's an opening for there to possibly be more to this book than a single book, I can only hope one day she'll write a sequel.

Great book and I hope some of you will take a chance to check it out for yourself. It's a great example of how civilization can de-evolve in time of a crisis and how it takes the right group to make a change in this kind of post-apocalyptic world. This book has a dynamic trio leading its ranks and their story is a must read in my book.

Reviewer's note: I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Not quite dystopian, not paranormal romance, and not questing story, but the best of all three.
Not my normal read, and yet I still enjoyed the story. The dystopian aspects were there without either the info dump of who did what to cause the collapse, nor the “let’s ignore the past, to shorten the story,” one can often find in dystopian novels. WOLFEN gives details but doesn’t wallow in them.
I’m not much of a fan of romance, let alone paranormal romance, however, again WOLFEN, set ups the interest without falling into a dark agnsty pit of romantic longing, misunderstanding, overwrought emotional scenes, histrionics, and hormone induced stupidity.
As for the questing aspect this is where I think the story is best, there is a reason for each decision, for the quest to occur and the why and how the events unfold. Even better, the story is not just about a road trip, but blends in the romance and dystopian angles together. It is through this blending and the synergy that arises from the combination that makes WOLFEN enjoyable.

I could not put this book down! To be honest I read it twice. This post apocalyptic world that Alianne Donnelly has created, and the game of survival leaves the reader placing themselves right next to these characters. You are pulled through the story on the words and views of individual characters as the story progresses leading up to the inevitable ending. When monsters are lurking around every corner and the ones that are most vicious look like everyone else. How do you survive? You adapt and do what is necessary. I highly recommend this book to paranormal, action, post apocalyptic readers, and yes even the romantics. This book is not a romance, however the subtle light relationships help tie this book together. All claws up for Wolfen and it's amazing author whom left me wanting more.

I've just finished reading, and I swear, the book hangover I'm going to have from this...

This really is apocalyptic dystopia done right. There is so much detail in the story telling, but it doesn't bog you down as you read. There's science and a love story, and fighting. But I really liked the brilliant commentary on humanity and human nature.

Alianne writes excellent characters as well. They are totally believable and even relatively minor characters feel fleshed out with proper back stories to give them motivation, even when they aren't particularly nice.

I just want more of this story. So many things aren't explained about the enemy or their actions. I'd love a continuation, even with different characters in a different time in this universe to explain things.

I have to say, this is my favorite Dystopian book to date. It has everything you want, Action, Romance, Good Werewolf/Human hybrids, Bad Werewolf Zombie Monsters, Mad Scientists, Borderline Mad Scientists, and weird colonies that remind you of an episode of The Walking Dead. It was also the first book EVER to give me nightmares! (Kudos to the author for that) I ABSOLUTELY give this book 5 out of 5 stars and recommend all of you guys/gals get a hold of this beast and sit back and enjoy the ride! I would rate it at as suitable for the 15 years and up crowd because of violence and extreme situations.

Wolfen has to be one of my favorite apocalyptic stories now. The emotions of each character were spot on. Even the crisis that brought together the downfall of civilization was created in a unique way. I also loved the whole set up at the beginning introducing characters that would assist later on and having a chapter dedicated to journal entries by a scientist.
I can't explain how awesome this story is. I will definitely be watching out for this author's future works!

I love her, and I hate her. I love her because I love this book. New take on everything, and I'm a huge science person so I love all those aspects too. I hate her because I would be all, well just one more chapter. Then DAMMIT, three chapters later and it's past when I go to bed. Seriously. Well written, good story, and I am a hard person to please. RARELY does a book hook me this well. Had me hooked. Also the site connected to the book is really interesting too.

Gripping Dystopian Survival Adventure

Wow - This book is a rollercoaster of feels with sweet highs and stomach-churning lows and heart pounding loop de loops in between. The book does a great job with the main dystopian questions such as what is “humanity” when society falls and how does one survive in a lawless world, with no resources and where “might makes right” is the primary group structure, for good or ill. In addition, the controversy of what defines “humanity” in relation to the pursuit of scientific ideals or even self preservation at the cost of other living beings is a central theme. This story takes place twenty years after the fall of society as a result of unethical science experimentations as we follow four main characters in their attempt to survive and create a life worth living in a world of various monsters.

This is not a romance, but there are developing love relationships that bring depth and honestly some beautiful warmth to the story. I really enjoyed Sinna and the two brothers Aiden and Bryce. Aiden is a hoot! The 4th MC is Desiree, who is a more complex character and not easy to love but that’s what makes her character arc interesting. Lastly, I have to mention a 5th character that surprised me from hating her to loving her - she is a delight! This is a standalone novel but I will echo another reviewer for a wish that there was another book for a duo series. The storyline and these characters are that good and I would be interested to read more as they build their lives together and perhaps get some answers for a few mysteries left kind of open.

If you enjoyed the novel “The Girl With All The Gifts” by M.R. Carey and HBO’s “The Last Of Us”, this book will grab you with sharp claws and drag you through the mud to reach the top of the hill. “Wolfen” is definitely worth adding to your shelf of favorite dystopian novels.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I am also an Amazon Kindle Unlimited subscriber and would really love to see Allianne Donnelly books in the program :-)

I totally judged a book by it's cover with this one. I'd never read Donnelly before but when I saw the cover of this book at a book signing, I picked it up based on the cover. Once I chatted with the author about it, I wanted to read it even more. After getting it home, I kept putting it off because it is such a large book. I'd pass by on the shelf and think, oh, I'll read that soon, but it was over a year later before I actually did. I was kicking myself for waiting so long!!! Great, well thought out plot, and likeable characters, albeit some a little too stereotypical. I don't read dystopian/post apocalyptic all the time, but when I do, I want to be immersed into it and this did the trick! If you've got this one on the shelf like I did, or come across it and love the cover, read it! You'll be glad you did!

Pros: This book was awesome! One of the best post-apocalyptic stories I've read. It was like paranormal meets sci-fi meets action adventure. I could see this playing out on the big screen. The book was well written and had so many twists and turns.

Cons: Although not a criticism, this isn't a light read, so be prepared for that going in. The only character I didn't particularly like was Helena. She was just a tiny bit over-the-top for me, but that's just personal preference, and she was a minor character.

Such an snjoyable, well weitten book!

Excellent world building and character development. A constant string of tension persists from the first page to the last as the reader is brought into the dangerous post-apocalyptic world of the main characters. This book is more than just a cut above it's genre peers. It is extremely well written. The story is cohesive and enthralling and the editing is flawless. A rare find.

This is a really good apocalyptic story. It has a unique story and lots of action. I think it could easily have a second book that explains what is going on with the converts. The one thing lacking was hot romance. I guess the author didn't think it fit with the topic, but I was expecting it, so disappointing.

There is a good book in here somewhere, but some serious editing is needed to bring it out.
I liked the concept but from the 10% or so that I read, I found it overwritten, confusing, and tedious. Could not get any further than that.

Great start, too bad about the mad nazi scientist. Also it was a bit strange to read about things like soccermums and Evian water by characters who were born in dens. How did they know about such mundane things?

Any way. Nice read. The ending was a bit hurried. There must be a part 2.

This. Was. Awesome. I loved this post-apocalyptic novel about how genetic engineering can go horribly wrong. Plenty of action and adventure, the story keeps moving through earth’s wasteland. Humans are now the minority, genetically engineered superhuman and animal DNA hybrids the Wolfen, and their genetic rejects, the converts, have overrun the planet. Very interesting world building.
