In Haints & Hellfire a family’s past catches up with them, and otherworldly creatures are looking to realign their realm. A young boy loses his family in a grisly way and his aunt is there is help find answers and protect him. Along the way, two reporters show up to get the scoop on the murders. Their competition to get the full story takes them down two very different paths. I also want to mention there is a kick-butt cat that is along for the all the adventures.
I enjoyed the story itself. Every character has their own agenda, and it is far from good versus evil. I believe Mr. Tockert has combined so many of the human (and not so human) characteristics and has laid them out beautifully. You know who you want to cheer for, but not sure of the angles of others. Above all, I wanted Jimmy to be safe and loved.
The ending of the book was very quick. I know what the author was trying to do, since so many story lines are introduced, but I had trouble putting it all together at the end. This may also have to do with my excitement of reading faster than I should since I wanted to know what happens to everyone at the end. The author admits to having a few editing issues, but has owned them. There are not enough of them to take you out of the story.
I believe there is a sequel in the works. Mr. Tockert closed up enough loose ends to finish the story, but left enough open believability that the story could, and should, continue. I look forward to reading the next installment to see which directions he pulls my heart again.
