Forced to use a man as a front for her fossil research in 1821 England, beautiful scientist Victoria Broadridge finds a handsome wastrel perfect for the job--but she does not plan on her powerful attraction to him.
Constance Laux is an U.S.American writer of romance novels as her real name and under the pen names: Connie Deka and Connie Lane. Writing as Constance Laux, she's published nine historical romance novels and as Connie Lane, she writes both category romance books and romantic suspense/comedy novels.
She was born on January 21 in Cleveland, Ohio. She remembers the day she got her first library card and the first book she took out of the Cleveland Public Library; Horton Hatches the Egg. She studied English Literature in the Queen's College in the prestigious university of Oxford. She married with her love of adolescence, and they live in a suburb of Cleveland with their two children, and an oversized Airedale named Hoover.
When we meet Gabriel Raddigan at the beginning of EARTHLY DELIGHTS he is a sleaze with a capital S. He went to school with the heroine's twin brother and left on bad terms. When Victoria Broadridge seeks his help, to say they get along at first is an understatement. The air crackles with tension. Gabriel spews latent hostility in her presence. It gave the storyline an edge.
Drink and debauchery are changing his looks. Described with a paunchy stomach and a face that has seen better days, this anti-hero is on his way to the bottom. Just as a reminder, an ANTI-HERO is a protagonist who lacks heroic virtues and qualities, such as being morally good, idealistic, courageous, and noble. Unfortunately, the turnaround for Gabriel to redeem himself seemed to take forever.
In debt up to his ears, 'Torie' proposes she help him discover the mystery of 'The Tooth' and she will pay him two hundred pounds for his work. His answer is no until circumstances force his acceptance. The remainder of the story was interesting in a few places but too slow. I found it hard to believe that two smart strong people were so obtuse with what was going on around them.
I wanted to like this romance more. It started out with a bite but sometimes shorter is better. Ms. Laux probably could have cut back this 383-page story by 100 pages and the plot would have been well-paced. And more interesting.
