I really enjoyed Murphy's ForeSender fantasy saga and his science fiction System Lost did not disappoint. I highly recommend this Galaxy Flux series starter if you like action-filled space operas, and well-written, relatable characters, each with a distinctive personality, including the AI on board. I also enjoy the witty banter found between Murphy's characters in all of his books. Great first in series!
System Lost is exactly the kind of book I hope to find when I browse on KU. The worldbuilding is fascinating, the ship's crew are likeable and interesting, and the story is well-written and enthralling. Malone is funny, and the humor is appropriately placed to lighten the story. Bad stuff happens (some of it is really bad), and there is a body count. System Lost is the kind of book I finish and immediately want more! More adventure! More discoveries! More Malone! More Gizmo! More mysteries! I read SL in KU and will buy it to reread, because I liked it that much.
I loved this author's first series, set in the same greater world, and I was completely swept off my feet with this start to a whole new cast of characters and a very intriguing addition to the author's overarching storyline. While the Galaxy Flux series can be read without having knowledge of the ForeSender series, I would recommend starting with the ForeSenders, because the worldbuilding is so deep and immersive, new readers might miss some of the subtle connecting threads that are featured in this wonderful sci-fi adventure story.
So far, there is no reference to any magic in this novel, although the greater world incorporates both magic and science. I really enjoyed this more traditional sci-fi adventure about an intrepid crew of intrepid space explorers. The author has really come into his own, and his style is absolutely captivating. I also really connected with the characters, and although there were switches in perspective, they flowed naturally and worked really well.
The fast-paced plot kept me turning those pages, and I stayed up way too late finishing this wonderful story. I'll definitely be diving into the next book as soon as I can, because I'm totally invested.
I can highly recommend this author's complete works. Absolutely fantastic adventures that are unusual and make for immersive reading.
Just wanted to give some props to one of my favorite authors, Adrian Murphy. His new novel "System Lost" sparks off a brand new series that is pure space opera/action adventure.
This is exactly where I was hoping he would go as an author. Rather than continuing to paint with a broad galactic brush and cast of millions, he is laser-focusing down on a ragtag team of astronauts on a single ship, the Adventurer. The captain, Grady, is exactly the type of jaded yet compassionate leader we want to like and follow. The witty banter and repartee among his crew of quirky multi-national teammates creates a very Star Trek vibe without being derivative of that.
The story kicks off with space pirates forcing Grady and his ship to take refuge on a wildly uninhabitable planetoid where they stumble across an enigmatic transmission from what appears to be an ancient intelligent life force, whether friendly or dangerous is anybody's guess. I don't want to drop any spoilers, but the action gets fast and furious from there.
This novel is good, old-fashioned fun, with danger, suspense, and most importantly a tight-knit ship's crew that we can care about and root for. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
Action packed into the space unknown! What is the value that would drive your response? Work, Family, Safety, Blowing S-Up, ... or going to meet the neighboring Aliens? Jack Grady is a very busy captain of his ship, that ends up being sent on a mission with his sister as his co-pilot to follow-up on a messege that was sent from an Alien, and they want to know more, from who, from where, etc.. But with his sister??? That is only the beginning. There is always people who are all about stealing, killing, and doing what their boss tells them... then there is the Alien additive... Boy is that one a whopper! This was a very good series starter, and I look forward to the next one! Thank you, Adrian Murphy for a wonderful story! I received a complimentary copy of this story, and this is my honest review.
