Penelope

I live a sheltered existence, locked in a gilded cage and unaware of the dark bargain that sealed my fate before I was even born. Promised to Mammon, the demon of greed, by my father in exchange for wealth and power, my innocence becomes the currency of a twisted deal.

But when I'm forced wed to Mammon, I discover an unexpected love I never could have imagined, igniting a forbidden passion amidst the shadows of my father's betrayal. Mammon is protective, growly, and drop-dead gorgeous, revealing his softer side only to me. But as my bond with my otherworldly husband deepens, ominous whispers of Lucifer's discontent with our match echo through the darkness, threatening to unravel our fragile happiness.

Caught between the desires of two powerful beings, I must navigate a treacherous path, where the line between love and damnation blurs. Can I defy the forces that seek to control my destiny, or will I succumb to a fate predetermined by the sins of my father?

This was good! I think if this had been a full length novel, it would’ve been far more developed and could’ve been phenomenal. But as a quickie, it was good, entertaining read. The heroine was promised to a demon before she was even born, promised by her father in lieu of his own soul. She was kept entirely isolated and sheltered for him. Again, awesome plot! Woul love to see this plot in a longer format.

There was steam, but I think the emotional connection felt a bit rushed, and I think it’s because the author was trying to do to much in too short a book. She introduces the evil father trope, then Lucifer and his manipulations of the hero, then an enemy of the hero shows up, and moving back and forth between the underworld and the above. It was too many plot details and the emotional connection between the hero and heroine felt drowned out.

Safe. Hero’s past isn’t mentioned. And it comes off as if he’s been celibate for a while. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to her hero. No ow/om, no cheating or sharing. HEA with epilogue

Too Much Fluff

While I enjoy some fluff, I prefer more spice, some action, some adventures. It was essentially a Rapunzel story with an arranged marriage. It wasn't kinky like... At all. Sure he had some "extra features" but they were skimmed over so quickly and most of the spicy scenes were behind closed doors. It also described him as "big" but if she "barely wrapped her fingers around it" then it must not be, unless she has gigantic hands, but with how she was described as petite and curvy, I highly doubt that. Regardless, so much fluff, so much repeating the "woah is me" over and over again even in the same chapter. The epilogue was the worst. She apologized for the same thing repeatedly, even after everything was spoken of and forgiven. I liked Pen's personality other than that. Like, reflect a little, but don't make it their whole being, y'know? Really, though, it was such an isolated story, and they got together way too fast in my opinion, but... That's actually normal if you're sheltered. You just want to experience everything you missed out on. So, cute story, but not really "monstrous" in my opinion, especially with how the monsters even came to be. So, they're humans but in monster skin? Didn't seem very fantastical to me.

I wasn't expecting prize-winning literature when I picked this novella up, but it feels like a half-baked rough draft. The characters are flat and the plot feels weak. And the asshole dad REALLY needs to get some comeuppance in this, but instead you have to sign up for the author's newsletter to read that part. I feel like it is crucial to the story, so I lowered it another star. I definitely don't care enough about this author or the lacking closure to sign up for the epilogue that should have been included in the story. Meh. I probably won't read anything by this author again.

Still waiting to know why Mammon couldn't see the dad's future.
Also can anyone make this deal? How?
Signatures are required but not for the deal with his daughter for *reasons* and what's with the blood?
Anyways it made almost no sense and the dad-bod part seemed a forced requirement to be part of the series, it was just like three extra sentences thrown into the manuscript to fill a requirement.

This was like having a sweet child stand up and read their class essay out loud to you. The essay is awful in every way and you try to keep your face blank, not giving anything away. When the child finishes reading, they look up at you smiling, eyes huge and full of hope, looking for praise. You could never crush this child, so you tell them what a great job they did, point out a spot or two to improve, and give them a huge hug.

.... Except THIS was supposedly written by an adult that I don't know.

I finished this book ONLY because I was sitting in my house alone, power out, during a hurricane and I had few options downloaded into my kindle. And no, I liked the other book that I read immediately after this, so it had nothing to do with my personal mood.

I didn't like this book, fair warning this review will be snarky .

Sick of beauty and beast retellings yet? Neither am I. Young girl (21) is forced into a marriage with a demon (ooo) and then they dance while some tea cups sing.. wait no. no.. they just fall in love. Oh and some other stuff happens but it's rather pointless.

Overall reco: I don't know if its that I was in the wrong headspace for this or something but I knew within the first few pages that I was going to either hate or dislike this book. Which is sad because I was HYPED for this book based on the cover and title alone. I love the books that don't take themselves too seriously, but this didn't hit that mark. On a positive note, I felt this was better written than Riches to Riches, which is ... something? no I will not be reading the rest of their books. and The title totally feels like a liar, as his body was described only in the sexy scene and its not at all the central part like it seems like it would be.

If you are new to the idea of monster type romances, this might be a good entry point.

"Shhh, you can take me, wife," he rasps...
Probably the only part I liked was like this line...

Plot: 1/5
Spice: 2/5 (WHAT?! IN A MONSTER NOVEL?!)
Characters: 1/5

When even the novella was too fucking long..(plot)
You could have cut out absolutely everything from the story and this would probably have been better. Like, if This was 30 pages of just smut, it would have been so much better.
The story felt.. forced? Shoed in? Its felt like the story was there to deliver the smut but neither side held up the bargain.
The whole story just didn't make sense and felt like too much. It felt like we could have spend the 100 chapters really exploring Mammon's developing feelings, how his dynamic was changing, how his work dynamic was changing. We got snippets that felt like they could have been expanded and opened, but instead it was like this weird jealous plot that wasn't jealous but was?

But Demons! There are rules! YOU ARE BREAKING ME APART, LISA!!!..(spice)
There were 2 scenes. 2. I am.. Look I'm a horny little horn dog. And that spice was so bland I had to GO BACK AND REREAD IT to make sure I wasn't just fucking crazy and skip pages. I am not generally one to hate on the level of spice, generally very happy to get it and will graciously bow at the feet of the spicy authors and accept what they give. But with 'demon' in the title I was expecting... more and was.. like I felt like I was that quote from "A Knights Tale": You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting.
So, I've broken my scale. 2 spice. no foreplay. The two characters spend most of the book talking about wanting each other, like constantly, but there was like zero build up.

ACOTAR had more fucking spice.

I have lost my mind..(characters)
They were.. bland. Everything here was bland. Pen was annoying, Lucifer was gross, and Mammon was probably the best of the bunch but still so very meh.
I think I sort of gave up about 30% and that is effecting my view because there was character growth. But in novella's it's often so fast that it's kind of abrupt. They make the kind of development that would happen over 300+ pages in a matter of 10 and that can be hard to effectively communicate without feeling like I got whiplash. Here I got whiplash so hard I almost DNF'd. The other issue with this fast change is that sometimes the characters get like caught in a loop. Pen for example. She was betrayed and then was coming to terms with the stuff about her life before Mammon and after Mammon. But to the reader, all we read was her internally thinking about her mother over and over again and how her mother wasn't wrong. But then we didn't really see Pen's life change outside of that old life. She traded her life with her father (dickhead) to Mammon but was still a bird in a cage, except now she was happy with the cage? Actually aside from sending Mammon sexy thoughts and her thinking about how wrong she was about her mother.. we don't spend any time with Pen. We have no idea what she does in that house all day. I assume read? watch TV? She mentions that she doesn't go outside without Mammon around.. yeah just.. ugh.

Lube levels/nitpicky shit
So at some point her father's last name changes from Trumont to Truman. This bothered me so much that I stopped reading to see if I was imagining it. I was not. He's called "Forest Trumont" until page 27 (3 times) and then after that he's called Truman (3 more times). This kind of this ends up ruining the book if I notice it. Because I either think it's a sign about something and start over thinking and then get all these crazy theories (Yes, I clown about Taylor Swift and RepTV, why do you ask?!). OR I'm now aware of inconsistencies in the book and will notice them more. Which ended up happening here
Which brings me to the "Jedi Mind Tricks" and "Mind melt thing that Spock did". Sorry, I know this is kind of a common used thing in some age groups and groups (specifically nerd culture and even MORE specific in nerd culture). This girl is supposed to be sheltered but she has seen both Star Wars and Star Trek (and other media that would make this reference common place) enough to use it in her internalized thought process? But she was super sheltered...
(description)
I might have overlooked this had I not been so taken out of the book by the name thing.
Oh OH OH .. Don't get me started on the shit with the Rapha
Oh and then what about dear old dad and his deal?
OH, yeah. What the fuck was up with the blood? That was weird. Like as if it was trying to shoe into blood play but didn't know what the fuck bloodplay is.
oh and uh.. yeah. I was excited for "dad bod" he's described as having a dad bod in 1 of the 2 spice scenes and not before and its like.. an after thought.

Penelope (h) lives a sheltered life, controlled by her overprotective father who obsesses over her purity. She's unaware that her father promised her to Mammon (H), the demon of greed, in exchange for wealth and power. On her twenty-first birthday, Penelope thinks she's attending a ball but ends up at a dark mansion for a wedding her father arranged. Forced into marriage with Mammon, she's initially terrified and feels betrayed. Surprisingly, Mammon treats Penelope with respect and honesty, unlike her manipulative father. Despite his demonic nature, Mammon reveals a softer, lonelier side, and their bond starts to grow, and things heat up between the two. Penelope begins to see Mammon in a different light, finding unexpected love and strength in their relationship. Sweet and steamy demon romantic story of betrayal, unexpected love, and the search for freedom within the darkest of bargains.

I absolutely loved reading Mammon and Penelope's story. As a fan of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, I was delighted to find reminiscent themes throughout the narrative. Without giving away any spoilers, I was particularly drawn to Penelope's character. She embodies a perfect blend of innocence and strength—she isn't a wilting flower, but rather a heroine with a backbone who can still exhibit naivety in the most endearing ways.

Mammon, on the other hand, is dark and imposing, yet there's a thread of humanity in him that makes his character deeply compelling. The love story between Mammon and Penelope is beautifully portrayed, capturing a sense of true and profound connection.

Overall, this book was an enchanting read, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

I received a free advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First I will say this I don't normally read books like this, but I gotta say I enjoyed this book and the love story that came out of it. I do love Violet Rae which is why I chose to read this story. Penelope lived a sheltered life, she didn't know that the things she was told were not true. She was made to think that her mother hated her and that her father was the only one to look out for her. When she finds out the truth her entire life will explode. Mammon is the devil's greed keeper. He's there to take the souls of people who want something right then and there. When a deal was made and it was time to collect well Penelope just might be the downfall. These two will have to navigate the new life while Penelope comes to terms with her new life. There will be obstacles but can they get through them?

Mammon is the Demon of Greed. His job is to trade and collect souls for Lucifer. Forest Trumont comes to Mammon 25 years ago and offers his future daughter to Mammon as his wife. Forest promises she will be pure.

Penelope Trumont is 21 and wants to experience the world. Lately, she has been having thoughts about her sexuality and wants to explore those feelings. Forest Trumont is her father. Diana is Penelope’s guard. Penelope is not allowed out of the hotel room except to attend a function with her father. She is not allowed around any males to keep her pure. Her father takes her to a mansion and marries her off to Mammon.

I loved that after the initial shock, Penelope calmed down enough to listen to Mammon. I also loved how patient Mammon was knowing Penelope was so sheltered by her father.

An unlikely couple as Penelope learns of her fate when she finds herself wed to Mammon. Enjoyed this monster romance as Penelope gets a chance of freedom and teaches Mammon how to love selflessly. Loved the whole aspect of the flamboyance of Lucifer and his theatrics, as this puts a fun spin on this tale of the underworld as it brings balance to the above, as greed is a powerful force once it takes hold he is only too willing to make it easy for those seeking wealth, vanity and power. Especially, pleased with the ending as it ends happily for all parties involved, except for one person who sought to make a deal in the beginning only to have its retribution come about tenfold.

I enjoyed this book by Violet Rae. It was a great read with a very interesting story and great characters in Mammon and Penelope. Penelope has always lead a sheltered, protected life because she was promised to Mammon, a demon who works for Lucifer procuring souls. When Penelope and Mammon marry Mammon finds himself becoming listless with his life an wants to spend more time with Penelope only they must convince Lucifer to allow Mammon to leave so they can begin their lives together. This was a fast, easy read that had me devouring the pages and I am so excited to know that there are more books this series.

The main male character (MMC) doesn't fit the mold I had in my mind. He has a sense of humanity, and finding love makes him even more so. Ironically, he fell in love with the "pure soul" promised to him. He is quite obsessed with his wife and is willing to do anything to make her happy. Imagine that.

The character growth of our female main character (FMC) is truly inspiring. She transitions from a naive, obedient child to a cunning and brave woman, a testament to her resilience and strength.

This story reminds me a bit of Hades and Persephone.

I loved Mammon and Penelope. As the demon of Greed Mammon seemed to have more humanity than the humans whose souls he collected. Penelope's father traded Penelope's life and soul to get what he wanted. It was arranged for Mammon to marry Penelope when she turned 21. But when Mammon met Penelope he knew she would be his for all eternity. This is an awesome read with great characters and it’s so well written. It’s steamy and hot and once started I couldn’t put it down. Its a wonderful story and a must read.

A quick and fast-paced, PRN romance that was easy to read, but felt like a reminder that nothing is ever really black or white.

Mammon is the demon of greed and has grown bored with his job collecting souls when he's offered an unusual deal.
Penelope was the reward of that trade, having been sheltered all her life to fulfill her father's promise.

It was an easy read with likable and intriguing characters, some threats, steam and love.

I was given a free copy of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Demon Daddy! Yes please!

This was a great quick and easy read.
Penelope wasn't the usual innocent virgin character. She's naive but has an inner strength that keeps her from backing down from what's right. Mammon isn't your typical demon of greed. He has a slither of goodness, hiding not so deep down inside. It was refreshing having the characters portrayed this way. There was lots of give and take between the characters and lots of steamy scenes.

I loved this story.

Endings are beginnings....

Penelope has been lied to her whole life by her father. Her father decided that she was the sacrifice for his future. What her father didn't know, or better yet, expect was that the demon, Mammon, would move Hell to keep her happy.

By the way, for Mammon to be the demon of greed, he is cinnamon roll for Penelope.

I'm looking forward to more from the series.

I received this as an arc from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This was a great monster romance. It was a well written story with a good pace. I really enjoyed the different take on the arranged marriage trope. Mammon and Penelope had a bit of a rough beginning but I loved how they slowly grew closer and the arrangement turned into a HEA.

Dad Bod Demon is Penelope and Mammon's demon/human, v-card HEA. Penelope has literally been guarded her entire life. No contact with anyone but her father. Mammon is the demon of greed. His job is to facilitate greedy humans. When offered a pure human as trade Mammon takes the offer. What follows is a wonderfully intense journey into need and love.
I really enjoyed this!

I thought this was a cute story. It's a little different from what I'm used to.

Penelope & Mammon were thrown together under unusual circumstances. I loved how Penelope was naive, but not a wilting flower. She was able to pick herself up.

Mammon was a morally grey character. I loved the way he thought. He definitely had me laughing with some of his observations.

This is a marvelous book. The world building is very well done. I love all the attention to detail that the author gives. The sensory details are amazing. The characters are very dynamic and connectable. The plot was nice and twisty. I was with the story from the very beginning. The author has a very beguiling style of writing. I greatly enjoyed this story.

This is good

I always did love a quick story. I know writing these isn't as easy as reading.
But this such a good book. A simply read about love overpowering greed and the trick that comes from their deal was extremely comical. The hard scenes weren't long and drawn out either. Beautifully done.

What a fantastic story . I could kick my own butt for waiting so long to read this book is have already downloaded the next one .
A wonderful story where dark and light meet , where a demon never knew love existed and a human who was told lies after lies and was sacrificed by her deranged father .

How does a girl who is so absolutely sheltered from practically every life experience know terms like 'Jedi mind tricks' and 'dad bod'?
It feels very out of character for her.
She goes from being this sheltered, innocent, pure maiden to a fiery, snarky woman in an instant. It was confusing.
Ultimately, this felt very one-dimensional and clichéd.
