GOTHIC HORROR:

Queen Victoria is on the throne, there’s an ongoing war being fought by soldiers and airships in India, and every day new machines are designed to advance the quality of life. Harbury Hall, an elegant country estate, reeks of aristocracy - as do its current owners, Lord and Lady Harbury. However, beneath this glorious piece of graceful architecture is a place of agony and terrible darkness.

Seven levels lie beneath; to some they are truly the levels of hell. To others they offer the chance to experiment with things never imagined by science even in its bleakest moments. They contain jail cells, laboratories and secrets where life is irrelevant, and death a mere annoyance. You will find prisoners, brilliant minds, and madness down here, and any combination could be behind any door. Take Dr. Matthew Henderson and his able assistant Emily Warren. They seek but one thing to complete their creation of mechanical life. They seek beauty. But this particular goal comes at a terrible price…

I'm really rather boring... Honestly. I live a pretty hum-drum life as a wife and mother. I shop at the local supermarket and use coupons now and again. See? Boring stuff.

I live in Virginia now, so I am learning all kinds of new things - such as being able to buy beer and wine along with bread and toothpaste. Wow!

Having been born and raised in England, I do possess a well-developed feel for the English countryside. Comes in handy for those Regency tales.
Even though I was transplanted over to the US side of the Atlantic, I still have ties to all things Brit. I bake sausage rolls and make Christmas pudding. You can take the girl out of England, but not England out of the girl, I guess.

I'm not sure anyone can write really well unless they read. A lot. I read anything and everything these days. And mostly on my couch with a book on my knees. Yes, the technology is out there for electronic versions, but there's not much to compare with a shiny new hardcover from a favorite author.

A good set-up of the Asylum for the Mechanically Insane series. Miranda Fielding has gone to a dinner at Harbury Hall where she goes missing. Her sister, Portia, decides to investigate to discover what happened to Miranda by going undercover as a maid. She is hired and learns there are 7 floors of laboratories beneath the Hall. Experiments are going on there of which no one outside the Hall are aware. Portia has a nasty feeling about it all and she wants answers but all she gets in more questions in need of answers.

I like Portia. She is curious and will not accept that her sister eloped. As she works as a maid in the laboratory she learns of the experiments occurring. She also learns there are prisoners kept there upon whom the experiments are done. She is outraged but knows that to find her sister she must not jeopardize her position or her life. If she can free the prisoners she will but one prisoner affects her more than the others.

The story drew me in and I wanted answers as much as Portia. I liked that Miranda's disappearance is not being overlooked and that the authorities have sent Inspector James Burke of Scotland Yard in to discover what is happening at Harbury Hall. I enjoyed the interactions between Portia and Inspector Burke. Between the two of them, Miranda will not be forgotten. Lord and Lady Harbury are creepy as are the scientists. These kinds of things could actually happen.

You MUST read this series in order. These books are not standalones. Each builds on the previous one. I am as curious as Portia and cannot wait to find out what is going on.

From the inner workings of an authors mind, this new story from Sahara Kelly will make your machine parts rumble to life. The secrets surrounding graceful and majestic Harbury Hall makes your heart pump the farther down you go. From the noisy elevator, to the dark damp halls underneath, what horrors await you will make you cringe. The scientists have their own stories, from a lab assistant with her own machinations, to another that knows how to harness energy. And don't forget about the current mistress of the house and what exactly IS that special thing she does to keep herself young? Hold onto your girdles, hats & lace up boots.... you won't believe what Ms. Kelly has in store for you.
