This was a welcome back story to Jere's previous relationship with his mentor Matthias. Jere who has an adventurous and playful spirit in the bedroom, discovers a darker and unsettling side to Matthias when they act out some role play together.

'Cuts So Deep' added further depth to the longer books 'Inherent Gifts' and 'Inherent Risk' which cover the relationship between Jere and his slave Wren whom he inherited from Matthias. Wren is recovering from traumatic abuse at the hands of his previous master. Jere's uncomfortable experience with Matthias shows glimpses of the depravity that his former lover was capable of, and explains why Wren's slow acceptance of love, trust and safety was won with very slow and careful steps following the trauma of being subjected to Matthias particular kinks.

This is so scaring considering what we know about Matthias now. Jere was pretty naïve I think and got really lucky that Matthias hadn't gotten as bad as he did later.
