The mystery builds in Devourers, Book 2 of the Spire Series, as the Dusties are caught in a deadly struggle for the Spire...

A breath of sound reached Rip's ears. He launched himself sideways, but a weight crushed down on his ribs and something like wet sandpaper wrapped across his face, cutting off his breath. He tried to kick out with his legs but they were swiftly pinned together.
With only one arm free, Rip reached up to pull at the mass over his face. His hand found rubbery flesh and flexible bone and he wrenched at it with all of his might, prying the thing away from his nose but not able to pull it completely free from his face. He tried to twist away but he could not gain purchase without his legs.
“Struggle, struggle, little worm,” said a whispering voice like the skittering of spider's legs. “Clumsy little worm, dull little worm. You think to catch and kill with trap? Now I've caught, and now I kill. See how it is done?”

Cast off who you are and what you know, and gather together in the dark with the Dusties.
Brett makes a mess of personality tests. In daylight, he designs systems and consults for investigative agencies as the premier expert on crime and bomb scene management.
At night, he imagines wildly.
And in the twilight in between, he is an accomplished game theorist, author, and world builder.
Under the vibrant Worldspanner universe, he works with other designers and authors to create an interconnected body of gaming and storytelling. He is designer of the acclaimed Duel of Ages game series and author of the exceptional unfolding mystery series known as Dusties.
Watch for the upcoming novel series, Jurney. And two tabletop game series, Tragick and Westhope, are due in late 2019.
This book was even more bizarre than the first one and left me saying, 'What the heck?' many times. Most of those inner thoughts were in puzzled delight, but some were just completely lost. Some events or details that were explained further or revealed had lost their meaning because I had no idea what it was talking about because these books pack an incredible amount of information in their pages. However, the characters are still incredibly likeable (minus the obnoxious children, Petra, Ardi, and the other one), and Yun. I have no idea what happened to Yun in this book. She was great in the first one. She felt inconsistent, hollow, and one-dimensional in this one, especially where King Scribbs is concerned. I started to hate her a bit, like Edmund in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which made me sad because I really wanted to like her. This was a solid second book in the series and I truly cannot wait to read the rest.
His creation and manipulation of character and plot are some of the best I've ever seen. I love these characters, and while I don't love the world they're forced to live in, I want to see them succeed in it. These characters have depth—overlapping layers that are foreshadowed expertly and pay of in a twist of surprise. If you've read this book, you know exactly who I'm talking about.
Rodrigo is still my favorite, although Rip is becoming an extremely close second. I might even have to say it's a tie, depending on how the next book goes.
All I can say is this: read this series. Read these books, and you will not regret it. This book has surprises around every corner, painful suspense, and a masterful handle on characters and relationships. I cannot wait to read the next book!
Book 2 did not fail to impress! After reading the first book in this series I was anxious to read book 2. Often the second book in a series rehashes a LOT of the first book. Brett Murrell did not do this - thank God! The books natural flowed into each other. The character development continued in Devourers - Now on to book 3!
The story is of a monumental scale and I can't wait to see where this thrill ride takes me. The mysteries rival that of the Lost TV series but instead of meandering into nothing, things are well concluded afflicting me with goosebumps upon goosebumps: and with plenty of mysteries being left for later. I feel confident that my continued reading of the series will reap the anticipated rewards for doing so. I also find myself getting more invested in the characters due to their good nature and well meaning attitudes.
An amazing sequel to the first book in the Series - Dusties! Brett Murrell picked up right where he left off! No annoying, lengthy recaps of the first book. The characters remained true. Love this series! Now I have to get the rest.
