Kings of Underland #1

A Bride for Beasts

Rate this book
Hey, you! Yes, you.
Dear Reader, I’m firmly entrenched in a fresh hell.
Though it pains me to ask: I need your help.

Once upon a time, I was a normal (if sullen) teenage girl.
Now, I'm the Queen of freaking Hearts (long story).
Like Alice, like those old books, like Wonderland.

Only ... this isn't Wonderland just yet.
I’m ruling a nightmare kingdom known as Underland, full of magic, mystery, and some seriously fucked-up baddies.
At least I have nine gorgeous husbands (with nine gorgeous … uh, staffs) to rule beside me.

But four warring kingdoms, tea laced with hallucinogens, pissed-off angels, and a vampire cult?
I’m going to need all the help I can get. That, and a crash course on how to be married to nine dudes.
Mad Hatter, March Hare, White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, the Duke, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Caterpillar, and the King of Hearts. Wrap your mind around all of those weirdos escorting you to balls, buying you swords, killing assassins trying to gun you down in the market.

Yeah, my life is weird, but I own it. I’m here to rule, to make change, to bring prosperity.
There are many kings in Underland; there’s only room for one queen.

C.M. Stunich is a self-admitted bibliophile with a love for exotic teas and a whole host of characters who live full time inside the strange, swirling vortex of her thoughts. Some folks might call this crazy, but Caitlin Morgan doesn't mind - especially considering she has to write biographies in the third person. Oh, and half the host of characters in her head are searing hot bad boys with dirty mouths and skillful hands (among other things). If being crazy means hanging out with them everyday, C.M. has decided to have herself committed.

She hates tapioca pudding, loves to binge on cheesy horror movies, and is a slave to many cats. When she's not vacuuming fur off of her couch, C.M. can be found with her nose buried in a book or her eyes glued to a computer screen. She's the author of over thirty novels - romance, new adult, fantasy, and young adult included. Please, come and join her inside her crazy. There's a heck of a lot to do there.

That's not what I asked for.

This book is a mistake. Why the hell is Allison facing a new villain? Is that what this book was supposed to be about? Or was it to see how Underland will finally be Wonderland again? I think it was supposed to be about that.

Oh no, wait. Allison finds cute and harmless things over-the-top and cheesy. She doesn't like these things, prefers the brutality and savagery of Underland. So she doesn't have to stay there anymore, she can leave. In fact, she should never have shown up. Underland is better than a boring rainbow world, she says. So why hasn't this bitch left yet?

It's obvious that she prefers Underland to her boring, pointless life in Topside. She's QUEEN, damn it. If you're rich (or a damn QUEEN) anywhere is fine. I don't understand her judging her sister for wanting to come home, maybe her sister likes a little peace and security, without being afraid that she'll be murdered just around the corner.

But all this is secondary. Allison couldn't help herself if it depended on her life. She's so pathetic. She has powers she can't control, husbands she doesn't know and a mission she doesn't care about. She should focus on these 3 things. But by the end of this trilogy (or however many damn books there are) Allison will have killed one more villain, won't know her husbands better than she does now, will still be a dumb bitch who has seized after using her powers, still won't know anything about Underland and IF Underland turning into Wonderland, will be without any help from her, who does NOTHING to help.

I'm so frustrated. I didn't wait 2 years or more to read this bullshit. I really wanted to like this book and believe me author, there is no one sadder about this than me.

This book was not supposed to have another villain! I'm at 76% of this story and again it's been 2 weeks max. Why does this author write about such a short space of time?

And why does Allison have no control over her own body? what a bag She looks at one of her husbands and turns into a needy, pathetic puddle. Relationship is more than sex. Repeat after me: RELATIONSHIP IS MORE THAN SEX. She's 18 and acts like she's 15. The way she thinks gets on my nerves! I wanted at least half of the chapters to be from the husbands point of view.

Seriously, I'm almost done and the only thing I liked was the few interactions with their husbands.

That's what this book was supposed to be about!

Allison builds a closer relationship with them, learns to use their powers from her and with those powers restore Wonderland. It was supposed to be about this! She gets pregnant by Tee or Brennin and has her first baby. And learns about Underland and its problems, meets new characters and helps them. Edit some laws and create others. All the drama could be about who would be the father of her first baby, or about not being able to quickly tear down the walls of the hearts of some of her husbands. But we didn't need another villain. More fighting and beating. No, damn it!

Purpose of her honeymoon trip was to meet the people of Underland and so far she has n't met ANYONE! Maybe a person, if you count the giant octopus.

White Queen? Kraken? Lory's love life drama? White knight?

I DON'T CARE!

In fact, of all the things mentioned above the White Knight is the least worst. But I agree with Brennin, traitor has to die and that's it.

In all the books where the heroine defeats the villain and has to figure out how to fix the broken world, it never shows her fixing that world. Simply because the author only knows how to write shit. Throw in a little politics and their brains are in a knot. I thought FINALLY I would see something different, but the author went down the same boring path of beating. This happened with Shrapnel Me and the same thing is happening with this one.

Disappointment. I won't read the next ones. Waste of time.

UPDATE

I have now finished the book and need to correct a few things.

1° - Tee did the favor of remembering that thanks to Jack, he and Dee were sex slaves. Thanks for the reminder Tee. Now I wonder, why wasn't that bitch Jack arrested or killed? Why is this bitch still influential at court? Ah, why is she loyal to the crown? Fuck u. If Allison had been turned into a free whore of the kingdom for a nobleman and become queen a while later, how would she feel if she had to look at her abuser every day? Why, dear author, do Tee and Dee have to put up with this? This bitch needs to be killed. I'm tired of Allison's false morals.

2° - The book does not last 2 weeks. At 87% Allison will me the favor of saying that it's only been 5 DAMN DAYS. Fuck u

----------------------------

Repita comigo: RELACIONAMENTO É MAIS DO QUE SEXO. O jeito dela pensar me dá nos nervos!

Rainha Branca? Kraken? Drama da vida amorosa da Lory? Cavaleiro Branco?

EU NÃO ME IMPORTO!

Terminei agora o livro e preciso corrigir algumas coisas.

If I had a nickel for every time I read about a girl getting fingered by blood covered hands, I’d have two nickels. It’s not much, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Once upon a time, quite a few years ago, I stumbled upon one of the most beautiful Alice in Wonderland covers I had ever seen. Without reading the blurb of the retelling I got the book from Amazon and the rest is history. After this first reverse harem book I finally discovered that there were more people like me, dreaming about not having to choose in love triangles. And I'm so happy that my first reverse harem ever gets a sequel series!

What I absolutely love about this series in general, not just this book, is the madness of Wonderland. Not every author dares to go crazy. Not every author can let go of logic. However, this Wonderland is the weirdest place you will ever visit, has customs and sayings that absolutely don't make sense and is exactly the kind of Wonderland I love to read about. Since our characters are traveling through the realm we visit a lot of awesome new places and I'm excited to see more!

I also love how the author sees this book as a chance to give the heroes, the Kings, a little more background. We're all familiar with one or another Wonderland story, so I guess we all have a general idea about all the Kings involved with Alice, but it's nice that they get some more background and some more time to talk about their past experiences and their fears for the future. It's nice they become more than simply love interests.

And last but not least: There is even more politics in this book! Since this is the first book in the series the politics is not that prominent yet. Most of all because to have the politics more prominent the politics have to break out of another world first. But it feels like a promise. A promise that there is war coming. A promise that the love of our characters will be tested. A promise that we'll get Wonderland at its best in the next books!

I can't wait for the sequel!

The original is one of my favourite reverse harems and my favourite Alice re-tellings. And this book was highly anticipated by me. However, I did find it a bit lackluster.

I enjoyed being back in this world, but the book felt disjointed. There's suddenly a big new baddie for Alice to deal with, and she just sort of meanders about for most of the book randomly interacting with some of her husbands. There's just too many if them, though. She gets barely any page time with them and I feel like there was zero relationship development with any of them.

I feel like this would have been a much better book of we didn't have this random White Queen plot, and focused on Alice and the guys within a lower stakes storyline. I feel like she tied to do both and fit neither right.

This should have been a 3 star read, ut the extra star is for the first series nostalgia, really!

I loved coming back to this world. I missed Allison and all of her guys, even Brennan, The King of Hearts.

I loved this new journey Allison and her guys embark on and I just want the next book to be out because the cliffhanger is killing me.

If you like Alice in Wonderland, RH and dark romance this is your book. I definitely recommend. Toodles!

Not sure what this book was about….

I hate reading a book where you are 80% through and you still don’t know what the plot is about. There is a lot of hinting at some big bad coming but it is so disjointed you kind of don’t care. Also the problem with having nine husbands becomes very apparent here- no time for all and there are too many of them. Some of the husbands disappear for while at different times. Then they are just waiting around for the MC. The ones that are present are not that interesting and they all feel like they have different agendas. Even the sex scenes felt forced and not original. I really like the beginning of this series but am disappointed at where the story now is. I liked these characters the first time around but this book shows that sometimes reviving characters for more tales is not always the best of ideas.

Great to have a bit more world building in this one, but still no real character development sadly. HOWEVER, I must admit, I did enjoy reading it, it made me laugh - satire

Will probably add more to my review when I think of something
*spoilers*

I enjoyed the different POVs in this series compared to the first. I wish there were more from the Harem but It was nice to have in this book! I also like thay it seems we are going to get more of a back story with the guys. We did kind of jump into marriage without knowing much about our nine husband's, so it will be nice to learn a little bit more.

I love allison and her men, especially the men. I did feel a shift from the first series to the second with certain characters, and depending how the second book is, im unsure I feel about some of our men here. I this it was briefly mentioned but they kind of seem stand off ish this time. Maybe because they are all ready married to "the Alice"

I'm really rooting for Brennin. In the first series I made a list of the men I liked from best to least and Red was somewhere in the middle, this book he moved upwards to third. I'm hoping he's going to warm up a bit more if Allison gives him a chance. There's alot of talk with having a baby in this book and honestly I kind of want Red to have the baby... first baby ?

DEE is still my number 1. I just adore him so much, and I loved his POV. I love his whole "Allison who will always be my Alice" or " Allison who is my wife Alice" Dee is just so precious we must protect him, speaking of which * spoiler * why you gotta leave the book on a cliff hanger like that? I now going to have anexity wondering if anything is going to happen to my Dee. I swear to all crunch peanutbutter and jelly sammichs with the toast cut off I will start a riot. ( jokes) but I will be very heartbroken. Dee also mentions wanting to have a baby . If Red isn't the first to have a baby than I would love if other tee or Dee ( preferably Dee) could be. *spoiler * there was some mention of mixing of a Harems seed to create a baby... I hope not lol if theres any mixing I think it would be nice if she had like .. twins and one was Reds and the other was a combo of the Twins. But regardless I am also rooting for a baby.

March moved up on my list to 2nd spot and Rab went down to the 4th spot. During the first series we didn't get much interaction with March until the third book. But they have something there, and even in this book you can tell there's something special with March and Alisson. Not sure what is going on with March and Raiden. *spoiler* Allison seems to believe almost Iikes he's ( for lack of a better word) jealous or upset he's not only Raidens. But I think maybe he wants to he more to Allison than the Hatter is. *spoiler * now that the hatter made thay weird bond thing linking their lives.

Rab in the first series was in 2nd during the first series. Alot of it has to do because of when he stopped time. I'm still obsessing over those moments him and Allison had when he did that. I feel like he's kind of more of a hardass in this series ( he always was ) but I think he is scared to her vulnerable with her. But only time can tell.

Tee. Poor Tee. There hasn't been much interaction with Tee and Allison. I do adore him whenever there is. He's definitely different this book series but we will see how I think of him in part 2. I loved the moments they shared in the first series. I hope we can see more of it.

I love that we got a little bit of backstory on Lar. He wasn't high on the list but in the first series I enjoyed the floating dance. And I hope we get something hot and spicy from him this go.

*spoiler* The Duke definitely opened up something inside of me this book when he was in his jaberwockie form. Now I'm going to have to find a moster smut book to explore this new interests thats peaked.
Speaking of which *spoiler* is seemed with the few sexual interactions Alisson has during this book, the men with shifting forms wanted to bring them out more and use them. Are we going to explore that in part 2... part 3? I hope it goes OK forever because I'm gonna need just a full book with each of our husband's. ( like a back and fourth POV with Allison and one other husband)

There wasn't much with chesh this book. He's kind of just there. Being a cat.

Raiden walker... first series. For me he was cheeky and playful and kind of gave that little bit of danger feeling. This series for me he seemed dark. More dangerous. And almost scary. I think he might have a hidden agenda, I never know with the Hatter. I still enjoy him.

Besides Dee and maybe the Duke. Alot of our men seem to have a hard time to open up emotionally. There are bits here in there where we can see Alisson getting close to their hearts but its short live. Leaving me wanting more. I hope we get more from each of our men when the story continues. Because I really love these men. I definitely need more.

Oh my goodness

I have long been a fan of the original Underland trilogy, but this book absolutely took me by surprise. Reading this book has added so much new and thrilling intrigue to the original plot. I'm sometimes worried about picking up with a new series beginning after a series ending (especially when it ended well). I was worried it wouldn't have enough continuity with the characters. That concern is gone! These are absolutely the same characters we know and love. If anything they are even deeper and more complex. Book one is somehow a delightful mix of the curiosity, sweetness, and awkwardness of new relationships along with a massive new story arch and really seeing Alice start to figure out what she is capable of. Predictably we did end on a cliffhanger. Hopefully plans for the next book are underway. This story is escapism at its finest. Read it!

Wow what a twisted ride this book is. It's great getting to know kore about each of the kings and they and Allison set out to meet the people of the kingdom. The ending was quite a cliffhanger and I can't wait til she writes the next book.

Wow... ff goed in verdiepen áls (big IF) je hier ooit aan begint! 🤪
It probably would have been wise to have done a reread of the original trilogy first, because it was really hard to keep track of all Allison's husbands in here. This says it can be read as a standalone away from the Allison's Adventures in Underland series, but I think you'd be beyond lost if you did. There's not enough introduction of characters and rehashing to get you by. I mean, nine husbands, guys. It was a lot in the original one, but imagine just starting out in the book with a name and brief description then being sent on your way, and they don't all have significant page time, especially at the start. No way you can keep your head wrapped around them all and keep them clear. And without that backstory, most of these 'relationships' are... abusive. I mean, they're borderline (okay, they went way over) abusive anyway, but just jumping straight into that... wow. I applaud anyone who tries.

DNF - quit at 8%
I did not realize this was a continuation off of another series, "Harem of Hearts", which I did not read, so I was totally lost in this book. I'm sure if I had read the original series that this sprang from, I would have appreciated this book, and not DNF. The writing style seems a bit wonky to me, almost like it's trying to be olden times, but with modern characters sort of thing, I don't know. It was enough of a deterrent, that I'm not sure I want to read the original series. If I decide to read the original series, I may venture to pick this back up & re-rate it at that time.

At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Very disappointing.

Struggled on til halfway through this book. I don't know if it's too many (shallow) characters too soon, some distinct lack of plot or but it's basically unreadable or at least unable to be followed. I get Alice in Wonderland was weird, so obviously this is going to be weird also but holy crap! I'm glad it was on kindle unlimited so I can return it. If I'd paid I would not be happy.

I'm just hoping Mrs Stunich was having an off season when this series was written, I've enjoyed reading many others by her. I won't be bothering with the rest of this though. Two stars only due to having enjoyed past books or it would've been one.

This book was okay. I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it. I’m not sure if I would say I truly liked it, but I will read the next one.

One thing I do appreciate about this continuation series is that the cracks are showing in the relationships that were really rushed and forged through traumatic/stressful experiences. I appreciate that everything isn’t just smooth sailing for the marriages.

I do regret not waiting until the whole series was out so I could read them altogether. I know that I will have a tough time picking up the next one and remembering what happened since there were a lot more slice-of-life moments.

This is meant to be a standalone from the trilogy of Allison's Adventures in Underland, which is fine, except the author could have approached it much differently. This would have been better off as a book 4 since it continues immediately after the third book of Allison's Adventures. There is so much info dumping and reviewing, I couldn't get past the first few chapters. It breaks the story and takes away from the feel of the book. Honestly disappointed as I loved the trilogy and the characters, but I quickly lost interest with this book.

This book was pretty much reintroducing all the characters from the Underland series that came before this. Not what I really was wanting. Loved the first series. I need new content in the next book (which I didn’t know this was going to be a new series) for me to keep reading them. I was hoping this was kind of a “happily ever after” epilogue type book… that is not the case. Now I’m curious and have no fucking clue when the next book will come out. Bah humbug.

I have been waiting for this one for quite a while, so you know I grabbed it as soon as it came out and dove straight in. That aside, it has the same whimsy and style of writing I loved from the original series, and Tee and Dee will forever be my favourites.
The story starts the morning after their wedding, and that's when trouble finds them.
There's quite a lot of action going on in here, and while there are sex scenes, it was way less than I anticipated (after Pack Ivory Emerald The first third of that book was just one extended sex scene) seeing as they're newlyweds and all. Shock factor is definitely in here, because apparently Allison does not do vanilla.
It builds well, with plenty of action, and ends on the dreaded cliff-hanger.

Overall rating: 4.6/5
Spice rating: 🌶🌶/5

Tropes: Reverse-harem, Alice in wonderland retelling, fantasy/paranormal, fae/vampires/angels

I've been waiting for this book since I finished reading the Harem of Heart series released before this. It's finally out.
One of the reasons this book and the series before it was one of my favorites was because of the men!!! They're so freaking hot and a little maniacal (ok, very maniacal) which totally gives them that hot-but-in-love-with-you-and-would-do-anything-for-you villain vibes.
I adored this book. it had so much action where Allison is a total bad bitch who slays the day while managing handling 9 husbands at the same time (like, that's a whole-ass adventure on its own). her husbands were hilarious and so fucking sweet at times, where they would take care of her and help her.
Tbh, I never really thought of how Allison doesn't know anything about her husband until I started on this book. only then did I realize that they got married in a span of, like, a month.
There were some things that I was disappointed by. There wasn't enough SMUT!!!
like, considering that the book is set right after the wedding, there is wayyyy too little sex that happens in these sheets (pun intended ;) )
also, it was too short. I was waiting for this book for 3 years.... and I wanted to read way more about Alisson, her husbands, and her adventures.
Tbh, I never really thought of how Allison doesn't know anything about her husband until I started on this book. only then did I realize that they got married in a span of, like, a month.
Nonetheless, it's a great fucking book, and every one of you who loves re-tellings, reverse harem, hot guys, and one badass heroine should definitely read this.
This book can be read as a standalone, but you will have a clearer understanding of the characters if you read Allison's adventures in Underland first.

Absolutely wonderful book by C.M Stunich. This is the first book in the series (Kings of Underland), but it is a continuation of the Alice in Underland series. You can start this series without reading the other, but I do recommend reading Alice in Underland beforehand to get a strong grasp of how everything came to be. Allison is now the Queen of Hearts in Underland, in addition to her newly found position, she also now has Nine husbands. A mix of a Jabberwocky, Angels, a King, a Vampires, Rabbits and even a soothseer. This first book is all about Allison and her husband's honeymoon, but more specifically her traveling around Underland to meet citizens of her Kingdom, and for them to meet their new Queen. Everything is not as peaceful as it seems, and it never is in Underland. Allison keeps randomly falling into rabbit holes to another world that no one has ever been to. There is also a new prophecy of a White Queen and a Mad King. Is Allison the White Queen? Will she be betrayed? Or, is there another villain they must defeat in order to protect Underland and bring it back to it'swl Wonderland glory. I cannot wait till book two is available and continue on this journey with Allison and her harem of husbands!

as of 12;46 when i am writing this review i have just finished all 336 pages of the consistent page turner that is kings of underland: a bride for beasts. and oh my god i am barely able to put my emotions into words that could even entrail in the slightest how i feel about this book.

on top of that, being left on a cliffhanger while the next book isnt even OUT? perhaps still in the works? i felt my whole soul be ripped out of my body by that fact because i still have questions upon questions and ive found myself trapped in the vortex that is this series. ive grown attached to all the characters and their vastly different personalities(as one does),, and not knowing whats going to happen to them has me hanging oin the edge of my seat practically sobbing.

the read for this series was more than worth it, and is intense and fierce and fiery and so damn tensive- i adore every aspect of it. the magic, the reality bursts, the characters, the passion- the EVERYTHING.

i dont think i could be more pleased with this series even if i wanted to. it hurts to say goodbye for now :((
i cant wait to see what cm stunich has in store for allison and our 9 boys next book. (which hopefully comes out v soon!)

An even bigger adventure

Allison’s journey as the Queen isn’t going to be easy and navigating 9 husbands might be just as hard. Her husband’s are all shifty in avoiding personal questions or anything completely, even if part of it is because that’s the way of Underland. However, the White Queen has been separated for some time and has spent it all plotting and planning and now poor Allison has to deal with the traps without knowing there’s something larger at play.
The spice level & chemistry with the husbands is fabulously hot and I’m loving the insight into their true feelings on Allison, even if they won’t share that information with her. I can’t wait to see how she plans to get them all in line. I love the progress she’s making with some of them, baby steps are at least a start, right?
I’m desperately waiting for the next book though because that cliffhanger was absolutely brutal & I’m seriously hoping the missing husband will be okay and the current situation will have the husbands’ help quickly.

As much as I loved the first series, this one was chaotic and all over the place. The spicy scenes seemed so random and were a lot more raunchy than her others in this reverse harem world. All of her husbands won't open up about themselves and Allison is like most 18 year old girls, unable to voice what she means and stick up for herself in relationships. Also, she is supposed to be "The Alice" and be this bad ass with great powers and the girl can't fight to save her life. I wish there was better character development and more about her training to be a good fighter and queen of this world, but instead you get action filled fighting scenes where she can't hold her own and then wild sex sprinkled in. The plot could get better developed. I did really like the multiple POV's from some of the husbands, but they were far and few between. Bummed about book two saying it'll be out early 2023 and it's July and there is still no release date confirmed. I'll still read the series because the cliff hanger at the end was intense, but the other Allison series is top tier comparatively.

I still stand by my opinion that 9 husbands is too many. The FMC in this book finally realized that she didn’t really know the people she married, so she tried to get to know them more—but it failed. The process was painful to read. It felt like it was the males’ mission to reveal nothing about themselves. Also, it seemed like the FMC had favorites and spent more time with a selected few than the others.

I thought North’s announcement that he’d stopped taking birth control wasn’t given enough attention. The FMC didn’t acknowledge it, and I didn’t understand why—since it affected her personally. In the previous book, she was a champion of contraception, but here she didn’t say anything. And North? It was very selfish of him to come to that decision on his own, without a discussion with his wife—whom he expected to get pregnant.

I don’t think I’ll read the next book(s) in this series. This book felt unfinished and like a collection of unrelated events—like cut scenes from the original series. Also, the cliffhangers in books irk me personally.

I’m being generous with 3 stars because I enjoyed the first trilogy so much. Unfortunately this book just fell flat. The FMC is supposed to be a feminist and mentions things like #metoo and death to the patriarchy often in the first trilogy. But in this book her 9 husbands generally treat her like crap and she just lets it go. They grope and grab at her, often seemingly without her consent, at one point one of the MMC asks her how she wants to have sex with the intention of doing the exact opposite of what she requested for no other reason than to be a jerk. To his new wife. The story doesn’t make much sense and everything is about one or more of the men physically using or teasing her and leaving her unfulfilled. The scene with the Hatter was the breaking point for me. The way he treated her was disrespectful, disgusting and completely unnecessary. I skimmed a lot of the story after that just to finish.

Interesting and distinct characters. Fast moving plot. Great worldbuilding. I would gladly read any novels set in Sunich's Underland. In fact, I'm always very sad when her novels end, because I always want more.

However, I had a bit of an issue with this novel, that I did not have with the Harem of Hearts trilogy. There was a bit too much toxic masculinity in this one. Part of the appeal of the Underland books is that they are set in a world where women rule. In this book, however, Allison was continually belittled and manipulated by some of her more aggressive husbands, and she simply put up with it. This was pretty off-putting and I was tempted to give the book only 3 stars, but the fantastic world building helped redeem it some. I gave 5 stars to each of her Harem of Hearts books, but this one only gets a 4, because ugh to unresolved toxic masculinity.
