When a freak blizzard besieges Plainfield, toppling trees and severing powerlines, it feels as if the world is on the edge of collapse. But things are about to get worse. Responding to a dire cry for help, volunteer firefighter Al Miller makes a gruesome discovery. What manner of monster lurks in the storm? And will he—or anyone else—survive?
Last Responder tells the origin of one of the side characters in the Outage series. This story can be read before or after the complete Outage series.

Outage is one of my favorite atmospheric monster/horror book series. I actually read the first book during one of the worst snowstorms we had had in a while and it creeped me out so much I kept peeking out the window to see if there were any monsters out there. Hey. You never know. This prequel is just as atmospheric and creepy as the first books and I’m so thankful to the author for giving me the creeps one more time. Now if it would just snow…❄️❄️❄️
I have read this whole series and then I found a new story. Well you just gotta do what is right and read it. Although it was short only about 35 pages that doesn't mean it wasn't good. Like all good short stories it left me wanting more. So maybe sometime this year I will read the whole series again.
T w Piperbrook is one of my favourite authors. This short story had me on edge, while Al fought the monsters. I like stand alone books and this story was perfect.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. There was tension from the very first page, and I had to find out what was happening.
The plot itself was very interesting . The pacing was good, and the descriptions were gory (so if you're not into bl**dy details, then this book may not be for you).
I liked Al's determination and tenacity. It was clear that he was a fighter, and I'm glad he did everything he could to help save Abraham and Sally.
The monsters themselves were interesting, and I'm very curious about where they came from, how they were created, what they wanted, etc.
I enjoyed the writing style, and I'd like to read more books set in this world.
I listened to the outage box set on Audible a while back now. I have to admit Outage is probably one of the best werewolf series out there. 30 Days of Night meets Dog Soldiers. Therefore, finding this short novella to accompany the series was a treat.
