Western Europe is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It has so much to offer vacationers, regardless of what interests them most. It is so easily accessed by the average person that it is almost a shame if you don’t get there at least once in a lifetime. There are many different ways to see Europe and there is something suitable for all budgets and all preferences.
What is included in this book?
For our purposes in this book, we will draw a rough line at the western edges of Austria, Germany, Croatia, and the eastern border of Greece, and consider all countries west of that line to be a part of Western Europe.
This includes everything from Greece and Italy to the Netherlands and Scandinavia and west all the way to Portugal, Spain, England and Ireland and everything in between.
Choosing Where to Go:
As you can see, Western Europe is huge. Unless you happen to have unlimited vacation time, seeing all of it within anything less than several months is unlikely. If you just want to see the highlights, you can probably cram several countries into a few weeks, but it is best to pick one or two and get to know them well, saving the others for your next visit.
Traveling within the mainland is quite easy and there are many ways to get from one capital to the next if that is your main interest. For example, you can easily go from Paris to Brussels to Amsterdam to Berlin if that encompasses everything you want to see. However, many countries, although small, have a lot more to them than just their capital and you can easily spend a week or more exploring them. Larger countries like the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Italy can easily take up a whole month of your time if you want them to your list and even then you won’t have seen the whole country.
Europe naturally lends itself to thematic trips for those who want to explore a hobby or passion. Food, wine, architecture, gardens, churches, it’s easy to work your way across a few countries while indulging in a passion or hobby. Some organized tours even plan their whole tour around such themes.
When planning your vacation, it is best to start by deciding on the places that it is most important to you to see. Then you can begin to flesh out what else you would like to see in their vicinity within the amount of vacation time you have available.
Choosing How to Go
When touring most of Europe you can do everything from exploring it on foot or horseback to flying from one end to the other. The options are almost limitless on their own. Budget and what you wish to see will become important factors.
Obviously flying everywhere can get expensive but it does allow you to see diverse areas within a limited time frame. Going on foot tends to greatly limit how far you travel but allows the most economical means possible and allows you to experience everything up close. Throughout this book, many different transportation options are explored to give you the best choices possible so you can choose what works best for you and your budget.
