This poetry anthology from Phoneme Media, an imprint of Deep Vellum, is a marvel. It gathers works from 11 poets who all survived the 2014 genocide of the Yazidis that was carried out by the Islamic State. The introduction to this book is itself informative and harrowing. I learned a lot from it and was inspired to learn more.
The Yazidis as a people have faced almost constant persecution since the seventh century CE, often bloody attempts at extermination. And yet their stories and their songs have survived. There is sadness and grief in these poems, but there is joy as well. I was awed by it.
