There is a wealth of jargon in the witchcraft community – from words related to sabbats, like Beltane and Samhain, to ingredients, rituals, and a myriad of tools. The Witch-ionary gathers all those terms in one easy to refer to place and gives newbie and beginner witches the guide they need to accompany them on their witchcraft journey.
Filled with all the definitions that you could need, this A-Z of magickal words and their meanings reveals exactly what an “athame” is, and when you might use one, and explains when Beltane is and what you might do to celebrate it. All the way through to the end of the alphabet, all the terms that might crop up in a spell book are explained – along with why that spell book might be called a book of shadows! As more and more people enter the witchcraft world, the need for accessible resources to de-mystify the most mysterious of practices has never been clearer, and The Witch-ionary is the perfect book for baby and beginner witches to have at hand.
Along the way there are ten simple ideas for rituals, spells, and practices to try and put the newfound knowledge from within the pages to good use, such as a simple house blessing for a happy home, a recipe for anti-anxiety bath salts, and the tips and tricks necessary for casting a magick circle.
Written by Deb Robinson, founder of the hugely successful Witch Casket subscription box, The Witch-ionary distils her years of knowledge into a fun and informative format that respects that the modern witch is a busy witch! The perfect book to dip into for an answer to a witchy question, The Witch-ionary is the definitive handbook and that all beginner, baby and newbie witches need.
I received an eBook version of this title from Edelweiss for review (thanks to publisher David and Charles), and it's clear I will need to purchase a hard copy for my own library. This handy Witch-ionary covers many witchcraft-related terms and offers helpful, easy-to-understand definitions.
Select chapters close with a spell, ritual, or charm to further one's practice. Some of the definitions (candle magick, for example) offer additional instructions on how one might implement the practice, so it's more comprehensive than expected. As with any good witchy book, the illustrations are vibrant and plentiful. It is fairly comprehensive in the different paths and practices covered, so it's a good way to expand your knowledge about alternative traditions.
The one suggestion I would make is to add pronunciation for each term, especially some of the more obscure words with ancient origins. However, this is a great reference title for any witch library, seasoned or fledgling. Being both informative and instructional, it's more than a dictionary and complementary to any practice.

The witch-ionary is absolutely brilliant. There are so many details in this book which just make it so. Detailed descriptions of familiar and unfamiliar terms, some words having extra little bits of explaining included (like the chakras, since they’re different!), simple spells (that i was not expecting and am so excited for !! ) and the ART throughout this book is so stunning especially with the colours chosen. It’s so beautifully laid out and is so easy and clear to read. It’s such a handy little book for any new comers or long term users of the craft, whether you want to learn more about the craft and some common terms or if you just need to brush up on them. I will absolutely be using this all the time!
What a fantastic and beautifully written book full of lots of helpful Information for new and older witch’s alike. This is going to be a fantastic resource going forward and will help me immensely with my craft. The cover and artwork is just beautiful, and the format is very easy to read, congratulations Deb on such a fantastic first book x
A useful little dictionary for magical beginners, though as accessible and bitesize as it is, it is insightful and a must for any witch's shelf. It is as informative as its length allows.
'The Witch-ionary: An A-Z of magickal terms and their meanings' by Deb Robinson is very much focused on nature, as well as spirituality and meditation, and the moon and moon phases. It also contains emotional self-healing spells, confidence spells, boundaries spells, banishing spells, cleansing spells, and spells for a magical and healthy home environment.
A witchy little casket of a book (born from the author and her daughter's subscription box, Witch Casket, and a culmination of all her life's work and experiences). Going to more natural, earthly, spiritual, calming means in life sounds great, doesn't it?
I'd love to be a crystal witch. As well as an eclectic witch, a moon witch, a Dianic witch, or just a sorceress, and an empath.
However, I don't like how the book mentions white and black magic, as good and evil magic respectively, when magic should be neutral - it is nature and it just is - and whatever it's used for depends on the intentions of the caster. Nor do I like how debonair it is about enchanting, bewitching, and binding another person, and using a love spell - essentially influencing and violating them, taking away their free will. This is despite the fact the author talks about the Threefold Law, and mindfulness, goodness, helpfulness, and "do no harm", and yet at best she cautions that witches who choose to hex or curse someone should "be careful", and spells meant to harm others are "controversial", when in fact these are not good ideas and should be avoided as necessarily as possible.
That aside, 'The Witch-ionary: An A-Z of magickal terms and their meanings' is a mystical gem and gift. An abridged, charming, magical, blessed divinity of an info guide for witches/craft users, to put on one of their shelves, in their bag or satchel, and in their dress or robe pocket.
A very helpful and informative guide to many who are new to the world of Witchcraft. As someone who is new to all of this as well this has helped me learn the meaning behind so many commonly used words among the Witchy world as well as a glimpse into the many different styles, religions, beliefs and ways many witches live and practice.
I am already keen on learning so much more about Wicca, Norse/Celtic, Pagan traditions and so on. I feel the terms "Chaos Magick" and "Eclectic Witch" struck something inside of me straight away. I have never been one to believe solely in one thing or way of life and have always been one to take things from many different traditions or parts of the world and hold onto whichever I feel resonates with me even if that means following aspects from two separate traditions/beliefs.
I will definitely be keeping this book on my shelf as a great reference/guide as I journey further on my path.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is trying to improve their self-worth; to learn to self-love and be a better person. Best section is the her story under Merry Meet. So very relateable as I could not put the book down since it was delivered!
I heard about this book after subscribing to Witch Casket (which I also highly recommend!) and ordered it as it really fit my need to learn more! Thanks so much for also signing the book ; I will be keeping this in "my go to" references! So many blessings to all!
The book is beautifully put together and love the artwork that was all throughout the book! Such a great book that will be used quite alot and being pulled off the shelf!
