I want to pat myself on the back for lasting until the end of this book.
IT.WAS.DARK
It was Brutal.
But!
It was laughable bad when it came to character development and story.
There was nothing new or exciting about the plot here.
Wendy Sue Lawton has definitely tapped out the Mafioso, Enemies to Lovers, Bully Romance angle.
They are all here.
I’m sure her creative writing Tutors would be thrilled.
We have our central female lead, Paige.
She has been under the care of Lieutenant Marlowe of the FBI since she was rescued from her serial killer parents the Colton’s at the age of fourteen.
After two years getting psychological help, she is allowed to enter the FBI as a trainee.
By the time we are introduced to her , she is 22, and a junior agent.
She has no family ( obviously) and has formed a friendship with her roommate, fellow junior agent, Betty Everest.
To blow off steam the two girls go to Las Vegas with senior agent, and Betty’s boyfriend Steve.
After spending a week in Sin City, the three find themselves lost in the desert near the Grand Canyon.
Steve quickly realises the trouble they are in when he sees a sign for the old mining town of Skeleton.
This particular town is a “ no go zone” as it is the stronghold of the ruthless
“Shadows of Death”
A brutal gang lead by the take no prisoners,Callistus Falconetti
He rules with the unimaginable horrific brutality along with his cousins
Dario Faustus
Along with a crew the contains Dog, the tech guy who likes a cut up his partners after seggs
Sardi who runs the gang hideout/ nightclub “Redskull”
Max, and various other ruthless member’s
It’s a town where there are a host of character who are into all kinds of depraved behaviour.
With no other option open to the three agents than perhaps dying in the desert under the hot Sun, they head into Skeleton to try to get help with their stranded vehicle.
This turns out to be the biggest mistake of their lives.
Steve ends up deserting the two girls, leaving them destitute, with no visible means of paying for their food and drink at the club they had been directed to.
As panic set in, Betty desperately searches for Steve, leaving Paige vulnerable.
Thus, she finds herself being taken hostage to “ work off her bill”
But!
In a town like Skelton, and a club like Redskull, that bill will never be paid.
This story was incredibly hard to read at times.
(. And I’m NOT just talking about the extremely graphic violence )
At times the descriptive text/writing style came across like bad google translate.
Add to that the absolute stupidity, and utterly ( at times ) flaky, flip flop behaviour of Paige and it’s safe to say, I found it hard to find anything redeemable about ANY of these characters.
I guess we were supposed to be secretly lusting after the cray, cray AF Callistus But he was just HORRIBLE.
Then.
I suppose we were supposed to empathise with Paige, and her predicament,
But!
For someone who had spent six years in the FBI, she was CLUELESS!!! at dealing with her situation and trying desperately not to succumb to her serial killer “ DNA.”
How convenient for her to land in a sleazy BDSM, club with a bunch of F’d up tattooed, pierced bad guys and be…
FIRST!
Have her clothes taken, be locked up like a dog in a kennel, once to finally get out by literally sinking her teeth into a guys. P!
SECONDLY!
Only to scavenge some old clothes, and be given a job cleaning the dread Section 3, ( the extreme torture area )
Yeah,
It appears the authors aim in this story, was to document as many depraved, debauched, bloody, moments as possible, and get them on the page.
These characters aren’t morally grey, they are as dark, AF!.
They have no empathy, or morally whatsoever!
Cruelty, and torture gets them …HARD!
They LIVE for the screams and the fear that they impart on their victims.
To be fair, you are warned right from the get go, with this story, at the beginning of the first chapter.
Callistus with his handy knife and what he does to one if his father’s business partners wives.
Regardless, there are lots of stupid passages that seem to be inserted for no other reason than to reaffirm the deplorable, disgusting, behaviour of the Skelton Crew.
If I had to read ONCE MORE how many of Callistus men wanted to “ Impale Paige on their D**k’s
Or!
How many times they couldn’t take their eyes of Paige’s exceptionally large chest!
I was going to SCREAM!
So, as Paige cleans her way into every one’s hearts with the help of her chest, she still struggles daily with her demons.
Of course her odd non action to some of the more dubious goings on at the club, has Callistus intrigued…
It’s not long before, between her cleaning duties, she finds herself being used as… How Callistus put it so eloquently…
a “Cum Dumpster “
It not long before he can’t get enough if this odd girl and her innocent, but sassy ( at times ) attitude
Plus she has got such a tight little P***y ( as we keep getting reminded )
After the endless sex, and debauched, bloody scenes we start to get the usual side characters showing up.
Annie, the whore with a heart of gold who offers up such pearls of wisdom such as
"Honey, just because the park isn't visited doesn't mean it should look like the Amazon forest," ( shaving her bits )
And Paige with
“I did what I’ve always done since I was old enough to understand and walk—I survive.”
The Skelton Gang, one , by one start to admire Paige, and fall under her spell
Until we finally get the ultimate moment when Paige has to call on all her serial killer DNA, crossing that “red line” to save a life. But! Not just ANY life…The Big guys
What amazes me is, Paige chops up this guy in a manic moment, comes around, realises what she done, and is okay. Actually kind enjoyed letting the dark off the leash
She watches her friend, FBI agent, Betty get brutalised by several men on a stage before being horrifically murdered, without batting an eye,.
But!
The sight of a body with its face bashed in left at a dumpster, sets her off into a blubbering mess, which, in turn, has everyone ( mainly the guys ) running to her aid.
So.
By the time the end of this book rolled around, to say none of the scenarios surprised me, would be an understatement.
The first one I could see coming a mile off. The second was inevitable. The third, I almost laughed. And by the end when the gang, with their handy tech experts, and “on the payroll” FBI agents came into play, not to mention an almost “tear to the eye” father, son bonding moment on “ going to rescue their girl” made me cringe.
- Cry Baby - Wendy Sue Lawton (7/10) - Je l’ai lu rapidement.

I wasn’t sure about this book at first. It is very dark, and it also goes into pretty vivid detail as well. I’d check the trigger warnings and take them seriously. There was a few times I debated on putting it down. I was shocked to say the least. But there was something about it. Something about this author and how she wrote it. I couldn’t stop reading. I read it in a day in a half, with breaks included(but only because I had to put it down) the emotional roller coaster was.. a lot. And I loved every second of it. The raw emotions. It was dark and twisted and I never read anything like it. Paige has my heart and deserves the world.
This was really good. It was dark..... took a bit to be romance but that just made it better. Learning about Paige's past as we go was great to help understand her. Callistus is fun to watch become obsessed as it goes on. Love the gang and how it has a whole town. Definitely different from what I have read before. Can't wait to see what or who comes next
Wow the word dark romance is true, omg the men in this book down right dark. Wow what the women go through and still come back for more is just insane. Was a great read but I think I would have been running for the hills.
When I first started reading this book, I never expected the undeniable rollercoaster of a ride. I don’t usually leave a review, but this book definitely deserves one. This story will not disappoint!
This dark romance kept me hooked from start to finish. I read it in one day—it was that addictive. Thankfully, book two deepens key elements and brings much-needed depth to the story.

Cry Baby : Dark Romance – Wendy Sue Lawton
« Chronique Passionnée »
Woah!
