Well, F.P. Spirit has done it again for me. He’s continued this fantasy tale and kept me hooked throughout. With so much going on in this book, where do I start to review?
I’ll start by saying, thank you, F.P., for changing the formatting and removing so much whitespace! So much easier on the eyes now. This made it easier to enjoy the book. Now, for the story…
This installment of the Heroes of Ravenford starts where the first left off, with the heroes returning from their adventure and going to speak with the Baron about what they learned about the Serpent Cult. During this talk we learn more about Lloyd’s family and past and also about the consequence of death, more specifically resurrecting the dead. I found the consequences very interesting and it's just downright nice to see that resurrection had one besides needing materials and money. It shows it’s not something that can be done on a whim or for death to be taken lightly, especially when it comes to nobles ruling over the land. I won’t spoil what that’s all about but it is a major driving factor for most of what goes on during this book.
At this point Brundon and Delgron leave the party of heroes. I very much liked them so I was rather sad they went their separate ways from our Heroes and hope they do come back at some point in the series. Martan, the archer they met at the end of book two, joins our group of Heroes in the absence of Brundon and Delgron and I was pretty okay with this. He’s a really nice character so I had nothing to complain about.
After our Heroes are done dealing with the Serpent Cult business they’re sent off to uncover the reason why ships setting course for Ravenford with precious cargo are mysteriously sinking or disappearing. The Baron is concerned and with good reason. His daughter’s birthday is coming up and many nobles will be arriving by sea and we all know disappearing ships aren’t a good thing when you’re expecting company by boat. That’s also not to say disappearing ships aren’t a bad thing in general even without guests planning to come for a visit.
So, on this mission the heroes deal with a round of bizarre events including the discovery of three lovely girls who may have something to do with a lot of the rumors surrounding the disappearing ships. For anyone who thought the books didn’t have any “strong” women characters, you’ll be happy to know they are now here. These three girls, Ves, the oldest and seemingly most sensible of the three, Maya, the youngest who can come off as a bit annoying but what kid doesn’t at times, and Ruka, the middle sister who is pretty much a female version of Seth, are something else and are very mysterious…to the point where I actually found it annoying but that’s nothing on the author. I could tell they had a reason to be secretive, but they really weren’t budging in the least even when our Heroes showed, time after time, they were trustworthy.
The girls do trust them enough though to help our Heroes out with their mission and journey back to Ravenford, though it’s not purely out of selflessness they do so. I very much like these three girls, even with their secrets and I’m currently rooting for a Glo/Ves hookup at the moment even though she’s sending a lot of conflicting messages.
On their way back to Ravenford with their news/find they encounter a friendly Dragon, making me happier than a kitten with yarn, and save him from drowning, indebting him to our favorite wizard. I’ll be curious on how that’ll pan out in the series since he doesn’t fill his debt by the end of the book.
As things progress in the story we find out the Serpent Cult is a very real threat and the Heroes are needed to protect the Baron’s family but not without its challenges. Lady Gracelynn’s brother, the Duke of Dunwynn is attending this birthday bash as are a bunch of his loyal minions. Why do I call them minions and why does it seem like I hate them? ‘Cause, I do hate them and it’s because they’re stuck up lowlifes that think any race but human is lowly causing a great deal of problems for our Heroes. All I can say about that is… I HOPE FAFNAR DIES A SLOW PAINFUL DEATH!
All right, now that I have that off my chest, no I will not reveal who Fafnar is. I’ll let you all read and figure that out on your own and find out why I hate him so much.
We’re also introduced to yet another new character. Donatello. Donnatello, or Donnie for short, is an artist and old friend of Elladan. I don’t really like him. Just like Elladan I find him annoying. I also found the scene where he was introduced to be a bit boring as it slowed down the pace of the book, mostly because of the long flashback that didn’t feel like it fit.
Now for the end of this book. BIG battle scene that is truly amazing. There were other small battles throughout the book but this one takes the cake. Loved the action so much. The book does end right after the battle though giving it a bit of a cliffhanger. This might annoy those who don’t like them, but I don’t mind them.
Now you’re probably wondering why I gave this a five star when I have stated I had some problems. The reason I’m giving this book a 5/5 is because while I had issues with the sisters and how the Dunwynn people treat others they weren’t major problems. Only the slowness of Donnie’s introduction was a big issue but because it the only big one I have, I can’t justify a star deduction. So all I can say is, excellent book and keep them coming, F.P. Spirit, because I can’t wait to get my hands on the next!
As our hero's continue their adventure they uncover more about the mysterious plots against the town Ravenford, while making new friends and meeting both new and old enemies on and of the battle field, while each one faces their own challenges, in the end they stand together to take down the serpent cult and a thrall master?
The second book in this series continues the adventures of the Heroes of Ravenford...well, most of them, anyway. One of the biggest surprises in this book was how much the cast changed, a couple of deep, well-defined characters leaving to be replaced by a host of colourful sorts. Personally, I preferred the smaller, more detailed group of the first novel but some may enjoy meeting the new adventurers and those who help them.
I felt a lot of defining characteristics were lost in this novel as it seems almost everyone has some kind of magic, and multiple characters can now fly. I liked the weaknesses that were more evident in the first novel, but then I always tend to root for the underdog.
My favourite aspect of the novel, something the author does very well, was the way in which backgrounds were described. Spirit has a way of making the scenes come to life in front of your eyes, and in particular I liked the underwater scene. I could picture myself there!
I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a fun, light hearted fantasy story. Even if you haven't read the first, you can enjoy this entry.
The Heroes of Ravenford are on another mission to find some lost cargo.
What I liked: I really enjoyed the mystery of the three sisters whom the characters encounter in this book. I loved the interaction with them, and found myself contemplating what and who these girls were. This book is very easy-to-read and you’ll enjoy the adventures the characters encounter. I loved the new added character Donnie. He was a fun addition to the story! As always I loved Seth, the one character that always makes me laugh! Great story!
What I didn’t like: Not really a whole lot I didn’t like to this story. Probably as a reader I got a bit distracted by a few of the ly words at the end of his dialogue tags. Other than that, I thought it was a fun fantasy book.
A five star fantasy by a writer who is a very good storyteller.
This is a fantasy that draws in the reader very cleverly, presenting everyday life in Ravenswood as normal. There is an inn, the Dying Minotaur, with a clientele who drink and talk about ordinary things, and flirt with the barmaid… shops… businesses... One sentence, which refers to men on horseback might hint at a cowboy tale, or a story set in earlier times but, no sooner is the reader lulled into relaxing than the truly “fantastic” action begins. This is an exciting story that succeeds in presenting magical events as the true reality, and holds the reader’s attention to the last page. Highly recommended.
This second journey with the heroes of Ravenford continues with the same enjoyable feel as the first one. Danger is coming from several directions, and so it keeps your heart racing from the first step to the last step of this journey. Once again, our heroes are using their unique abilities to vanquish the threat. That’s why it works so beautifully. The cleric, the wizard, the soldier/warrior, and the multi-talented halfling are nothing short of entertaining to watch together and the banter between all of them is priceless. Even though I continue to grow attached to all the characters in Ravenford, a couple of them I enjoy especially. Seth, the jack of all trades halfling is one. He can get around just about anywhere unseen, probably pick any lock created, and always seems to find an escape route. His personality is interesting too. He tries to come off as caring only about the payoff for a job, and he can’t resist taking a humorous jab at one of his comrades a good portion of the time. However, on the other side, he clearly cares about each of them and risks his life for them on numerous occasions as proof. Lloyd is also another one that I’m especially fond of out of the companions. He’s super strong, an awesome fighter, and is just the all-around picture-perfect soldier. However, he has this incredibly sweet side, one that ironically gets easily flustered in other areas, such as his extremely slow romancing of a princess in the story. It earns him considerable teasing from his comrades to the point they finally make efforts to help the couple speed up the courting ritual. It really makes him a fun character to watch. This series very much has the Lord of the Rings feel to it. It also reminded me of another of my favorites (lesser-known series though), which is The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. Once again, I loved how this kept the action coming and the comradeship and banter between the companions. I look forward to continuing the journey with the heroes of Ravenfort.
Our group of friends have added a new member, Martan but were missing Tritan and Brundon this time around, when they encounter the Greymantle sisters, who are strange, have strong powers to communicate with sea creatures and to talk to animals and who join the group on this second adventure. They were all trying to solve the mystery of the disappearing trade ships which were supposed to provide necessities for Ravenford. It was looking like the Serpent Cult was once again behind these disappearances. This time they were using goblins and demons to carry out their dirty work. But why is this cult interested in ruining Ravenford and what are they planning for the city? In this book we meet the three strange sisters who are full of mystery, a demon, four more assassins and a whirling dervish. Could things get more interesting than that? Yep looks like they really could! Venture forth on our friends crazy adventures and you will not lack for action, and fun! I am so in love with this series and am looking forward to book 3.
This is book #2 in the Heroes of Ravenford series. It turns out that we discover the heroes are all teenagers, something I did not realize. They don't have much experience in this hero stuff, but they are sure getting some now. Lady Andrella's coming-of-age birthday is coming up and her parents are planning a huge party for her. Our boys are hired to keep everyone safe from the serpent cult. I admire the way they plan to cover all the bases even though there are not enough of them to go around. They manage to snag Elladan to help by making sure the entertainment for the big day was not infiltrated. Now they also can use Martan and a new guy to help with the entertainment. This is also where they meet up with the three sisters that are more at home riding dolphins than they are dancing at a birthday party. The final confrontation is interesting and I think you will like it.
This epic fantasy continues with our four main characters, an elf, a gnome, a human and a halfling. They're an interesting group, each with their own specialties and so well written that you feel like you know them. New characters are added and a few of them are quite mysterious. There's lots of action and intrigue and our 'Heroes of Ravenford' must save the day no matter the peril they are in. I'm so glad I discovered the author and this series. I was drawn in from the beginning and am very much looking forward to the next book!
Serpent Cult by F.P. Spirit is the second instalment in the Heroes of Ravenhood Series. This is not a stand-alome, I recommend to read the books in order. The previous book is Ruins on Stone Hill. While the first book was more of an introduction to this ya pnr, mystery series, now it's on. Glolindir and his merry men are tasked again to keep their world safe. A great next instalment that makes you want to read the next book asap.
I was very glad to see the author include stronger female representation in this second book (something I thought was severely lacking in the first.) That said, the book did bog down periodically for me, and it seemed like there was less focus on adventure. Still I enjoyed it, and I am interested in staying on for the next book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
F.P. Spirit continues to give an amazing account of our heroes as they continue to gain experience. Old friends leave and new friends are found in this installment. I love this series and it gives me ideas on how to describe spell effects in my tabletop role playing games as well!
Adventure, magic and battles between good and evil
Book 2 of the series adds more fantastical characters, lots of danger, battles, and magic. The author's imagination gives us an epic series to enjoy. Anyone who enjoys adventure, magic, and battles between good and evil should get this one. There is still more to learn in the next book.
Thanks Netgalley and Publisher for the opportunity to read and review! I really missed the main character of the first book. This one also presented an intriguing and very colorful and diverse new cast though. It was a pleasure following their adventures and seeing them work as a team!
Characters continue to share their backgrounds and deepen their friendships - humor mixed with action and investigation. Plans are made and then the real stuff happens! Continuing to enjoy this series.
