Cure your emetophobia and Thrive

Regardless of what you might read or hear elsewhere, you CAN be cured of emetophobia - a fear of being sick - and you can do it yourself, in the comfort and safety of your own home. Rob Kelly has helped hundreds of emetophobics over the last twenty five years, and supervised the helping of many hundreds of others. This book is based on his Thrive Programme, but it has been re-written and re-researched especially for people with a specific fear of vomiting/fear of being sick.

We have just finished a research survey (download it here: http://www.thriveprogramme.org/wp-con...) following up 34 emetophobes going through Thrive to help overcome their phobia. All of them overcame their fear. At the same time, they all significantly raised their self-esteem, significantly lowered their social anxiety, reduced their obsessing, calmed down their 'desire for control' and felt much more powerful! These changes are ESSENTIAL if you want to completely overcome your phobia.

Where does emeto come from? Why are 90% of the sufferers women? Why is it such a huge phobia to have (probably the worst of all of the phobias)? Why do so many women suffer from it (about 5-8% of all women - to a greater or lesser extent) and yet they mostly keep it secret from their family and friends? Why does exposure therapy generally not work for emetophobes? What are the shortfalls of CBT? Why is the Thrive Programme so effective in helping emetophobes? All these questions, and much more, are thoroughly explored and answered. Childhood, parenting, anxiety, social phobia, depression, agorophobia, OCD, obsessive brooding, hyper vigilance, black and white thinking are all described in detail.

More importantly, the book details a step by step programme (online support available) that you can follow at home, which will enable you to finally overcome your fear/phobia, get on with your life, and positively THRIVE. See also www.emetophobia.co.uk and www.thriveprogramme.org

I don't really like self-help books that rigidly prescribe a "programme" which consists of mainly fairly generic techniques or practices dressed up as the egotistical author's own inventions. But this book does have some very thought provoking and useful insights into what underpins phobia, and the central practice of building up belief in or recognition of one's coping abilities is something I have found helpful.

Loved this book. Rob Kelly gets to the heart of the problem and it's easy to see where you go wrong in building the phobia up to be this dread thing where you think you'd rather die than vomit.

I'm following all the advice and I'm working hard on changing my thinking and I'm sure this is the way I will cure myself of my emetophobia.

Loved this book. I believe the original book is for general anxiety and this one is spesifically for the anxiety of being sick. I don’t really know how much they vary from each other, but I would recommend this for anyone just to improve your life, even if you don’t struggle with any form of anxiety. The book is very interesting and hard to put down, with many studies and examples from reality. It is a very good self-help book I would say and probably good to re-read once in a while, at least some of it. I always mark the most important «quotes» in the books I read so that it is easy to come back to.

took me 11 months, but i finally finished it

honestly? i felt like this was overrated. there were some really good points about emetephobia and managing it, but there was also just overall weird stuff where the author explicitly stated things like "being religious makes your ocd worse" and "you cause your chronic illness and can make it go away if you really want it to"

i definitely feel like my life has gotten a lot better though, and i'm a lot less afraid of vomit, so i guess that's good? just take this book with a grain of salt i guess?

Definitely some helpful tools in there for coping strategies and trying to change your mindset.
Some parts are questionable, such as the phrasing/belief that depression is just low mood and addiction isn’t real etc. as we know these things aren’t true. Mental illnesses felt somewhat minimised throughout this manual.
However, ignoring the slightly ignorant aspects, a good set of tools to develop your understanding of why the phobia exists and how to start combatting this fear!

I liked that Rob didn't skirt issues. As I have only just finished the book & have just started the practice I can't say if I'm "cured". I have been using the information from the book & have noticed a change already. I am hoping by continuing the exercises & using my changed thinking I will finally be rid of this debilitating phobia.
