I was born and grew up in a small town. My family was/is a very close knit family. I grew up watching my mother and father work hard to provide for our family, while doing their best to raise my brother and I in a loving and caring environment. We didn't have it all, but we had everything we needed!
As a child I loved playing outside with my favorite action figures. I would have imaginary action-adventures every afternoon in a sandbox outside. This type of play, fueled by the wonderful cartoons of the late 80's and early 90's, helped shape my childhood into an epic hero-filled chapter of my life.
In school I was never much of a reader. In fact, one might say that I hated reading. I was a poor reader and didn't practice much at all. My apprehension towards reading turned to anxiety at school and church, causing me to fear reading around others. To make a long story short, I graduated from high school with a below average reading level.
Even with difficulties reading, school was an enjoyable experience for me. Art, science, music, and drama were among my most favorite subjects. However, physical education was by far the class I enjoyed the most. I am a kinesthetic learner, which means that I learn best while doing something physical. P.E both gave me an outlet for energy, and allowed me a chance to process things I learned in the classroom.
After high school I dabbled around in a few college classes at the local community college. I didn't have any true direction and my grades reflected that. After a year of going to college to see friends I decided to go to work. I worked at many different jobs in many different fields. The work that stands out as meaningful was my work with children. I worked at both an after school program and a pre-school. Through these jobs I got to see children learning. I realized back then that this was important to me. However, I was unsure of where this would lead me.
In the winter of 2004 I met the young lady who would later become my wife. We dated for about 2 years and were married in the summer of 2006. My wife is my best friend. She is also responsible for helping me learn to cherish reading as a skill and hobby! Together we are building a beautiful life together. We share three amazing children! Our son, whom my book is named after, was the first blessing in 2009. Our curly-haired little girl joined our family in 2011. Finally, our youngest daughter was born in 2015. Everyday my family makes me thankful to be here.
I currently work at the Good Samaritan Boys Ranch, a residential treatment facility for troubled youth. As a Youthcare specialist I am responsible for a dorm full of boys who have been exposed to some sort of trauma in their lives. At the ranch our goal is to help these young men overcome their pasts and live brighter futures.
I am also a certified teacher in the state of Missouri. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in K-12 Physical Education from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar Missouri in the spring of 2015.
