For ten years, Pennsylvania frontiersman Robbie Shatto has explored the Rocky Mountains. In 1830, he returns to his beloved Perry County, Pennsylvania to raise mountain horses, to enjoy a quieter life, and to marry and have children. However, a vicious and vindictive family has moved in. The Rubys killed and beat other Shattos until Rob's surviving relatives fled to other lands. Hardened by his mountain-man decade, Rob Shatto does not absorb or ignore abuse. He begins to re-balance the scales. The Rubys painfully, and sometimes terminally, discover that Rob Shatto is a tough and experienced warrior who ignores all obstacles, including the law, and he fights always to win. As their numbers decrease and their holdings are eliminated, the Rubys' hope lies in the uncertain return of their almost inhuman monster of a street brawler, Maddoc Ruby. Rob Shatto also awaits Maddoc's arrival. Their no-rules battle to either abject surrender or death is inevitable.
