In the Timeless Classics series, Charles River Editors is republishing civilization’s greatest literary works and bringing them to a new generation via ebooks. Timeless Classics offers a wide range of history’s greatest writing, including the acclaimed fictional stories of Jonathan Swift and Washington Irving, the political treatises of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Karl Marx, the epic poetry of Homer, and more.
Oedipus is one of the most well known mythological figures of the ancient Greeks, and he was immortalized in Sophocles’ trilogy of plays: Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus. Each play in the trilogy is considered among the greatest plays ever written, and they were admired by the Ancient Greeks as well.
Oedipus the King, also known as Oedipus Rex, helped create the genre of tragedy in its day, and people around the world are still familiar with Oedipus and his fate today as a result. But that was only the first of Sophocles’ classic trilogy, known as the Theban plays. Written last, Oedipus at Colonus is chronologically in the middle of the trilogy, and it details the end of Oedipus’ tragic life. Sophocles wrote Antigone first, even though it was the last of the trilogy chronologically.
This edition of Sophocles’ Theban Plays includes a table of contents and is illustrated.
