“This emotional family saga explores Complex PTSD and childhood trauma in a narrative blending psychological suspense with hard-won emotional breakthroughs. … A fast-paced contemporary thriller that delves with insight into themes of mental health [with]... jolting plot twists.” ― All-A’s from BookLife, in Publishers Weekly
What Lies Buried…doesn’t stay buried. Scarred by a lifetime of emotional abuse and traumatic violence, Gavin battles the triggers of Complex PTSD. His wife Katie is determined to support him despite the strain of his unpredictable reactions on their marriage. But returning to Boston to settle his father’s estate reactivates Gavin’s childhood scars, and more triggers. Then when he uncovers his family’s mob history, his volatile reactions put him in the crosshairs of dangerous people. Worried for his safety, Katie packs up their toddler and joins him. While there, she begins sorting through her late parents’ keepsakes, finding evidence of the artistic talent she abandoned after her father died, when she became child caregiver to her disabled mother. Eager to revive her unfulfilled past, Katie copes with Gavin’s increasingly unstable behavior through her painting and new friendships that encourage her journey to self-discovery. As Gavin resists treatment and goes off the rails, secrets of his family’s past threaten them all. The generational dysfunction in Kain’s award-winning Secrets In The Mirror continues, as Katie faces her own emotional wounds and must choose between saving her marriage or saving her child...and herself.

Leslie Kain was always writing something when she was a kid – including secret plans – culminating in running away across country at fifteen, never looking back. But in her careers (psychology, Government Intelligence, nonprofits), her writing was limited to nonfiction: professional, research etc. Finally dabbling in fiction during spare moments above the clouds, her short stories found their way into literary journals and anthologies. She developed personal relationships with her characters, who relentlessly nagged her into longer stories. Her debut novel, ‘Secrets In The Mirror’ was published by Atmosphere Press Sept 2022 (the audiobook will be released Summer 2023 and the sequel early 2024). She leverages her twisted background and education, training & experience in psychology to write dark psychological stories of flawed people whose greatest obstacles to happiness lie within them. Kain earned degrees in psychology from Wellesley College and an MBA from Boston University. Originally from “all over” the U.S. (although a piece of her heart remains in Boston), she now resides in Mexico with her husband and cat Sheba. TITLE: WHAT LIES BURIED AUTHOR: LESLIE KAIN PUB DATE: 05.14.2024
I read Leslie Kain’s award winning novel, Secrets in the Mirror in 2022, a psychological suspense about twins Devon and Gavin and their mob connected father. Gavin’s story continues in What Lies Buried as his wife Katie tries to make the heart breaking decisions of trying to cope with her volatile relationships and with a toddler in tow.
Another winning read from Leslie Kain and though this book may be enjoyed as a stand alone I was glad to have read the first book that delved into the complexities of the family dynamics and getting to know the characters in-depth.
What Lies Buried” is thrilling psychological fiction by award-winning author Leslie Kain. Prepare to be captivated by this one – it’s a tale that stands out with every twist, every character, every moment crafted to challenge expectations.
Gavin is a man struggling with Complex PTSD triggered by a lifetime of mental abuse, as well as witnessing traumatic violence in his family of origin. When Gavin, his wife Katie, and daughter Maggie arrive in Boston to deal with his father’s passing and settle his affairs, dark family secrets involving the mob come to the surface, threatening to drag Gavin even deeper into the depths of instability.
As Katie stands by him with unwavering support, her own life becomes muted with the constant pressures of feeling like the only adult in her family, walking on eggshells around Gavin and basically single-parenting their daughter. But even as Gavin becomes more entangled in his illness, Katie finds hope amidst the turbulence, rediscovering her passion for art. Will Katie be able to navigate the fine line between her dedication to her marriage with the urgent need to protect her child and salvage her sense of self?
As the continuing story of Kain’s debut novel, “Secrets in the Mirror,” return readers will likely devour “What Lies Buried” having already developed a deep emotional investment in the fates of these characters. The fitting level of backstory included ensures that new readers like me will appreciate how the novel stands on its own. But trust me, you’ll want to go back and catch all the subtleties you missed from book one.
Kain is masterful in her craft, providing an expertly researched, well-informed narrative diving into the chilling realities of PTSD and the effects this illness has on the entire family. The author distinctively and seamlessly weaves in terms and conversations around PTSD to establish a clear understanding of this complex condition and does so while avoiding any sense of lecturing or information dumping. I was shocked at how Gavin was triggered and at the often seemingly innocent situations that affected him.
The characters are endearing and pull at the heartstrings. Gavin is acutely complex as he struggles for a sense of normalcy. Kain draws out strong emotions from her readers as many will vacillate between feeling sorry for Gavin to being outraged at his behavior, even knowing full well that he suffers from a severe mental illness. Katie is a saint. She handles Gavin’s episodes with grace as she strives to be a supportive force to both Gavin and their daughter. This is no easy feat and is often detrimental to her personal well-being. It’s interesting how naturally we step into the characters’ shoes; I found myself aligning more with Katie, instinctively adopting the role of the caregiver rather than the one battling illness in their dynamic.
I cannot give anything away except to say that the ending promises a continuation of this family’s saga. If you enjoy intense psychological thrillers “What Lies Buried” is a story you simply cannot miss. This book ticks all the boxes for me. 5-Stars – highly recommended reading!
Trigger Warning: Caution for Sensitive Content
This story confronts intense themes such as emotional abuse, trauma, and PTSD with unflinching honesty. It takes the reader through the turbulent aftermath of a troubled past, struggling with childhood distress and deep-rooted family issues. Please consider your personal experiences and potential emotional response to such content and prioritize your mental well-being when deciding whether to engage with this book.
Suffering the effects of PTSD, Gavin is reeling from the loss of his twin and a lifetime of emotional abuse. But with a loving wife and young daughter by his side, as well as a thriving career running a restaurant, things are starting to look up. When Gavin finds himself returning to Boston to go over his family affairs, he begins to uncover his family’s past, which the Mob doesn’t seem so happy about. Can he learn the truth without losing everything he’s gained? Leslie Kain has written an emotional thriller that will leave readers breathless.
This story is deep in generational family drama and trauma. It’s the sequel to Secrets In The Mirror and it continues Gavin and Katie’s story. Gavin has severe PTSD and Katie is battling her own conflicts and at the same time pushing through to help Gavin as secrets and a sense of danger grips you at every page. The struggle is real between helping yourself and yours at the expense of facing hard truths, breaking cycles, hurt and getting to the other side. This book is much more than what meets the eye. There are so many elements to these books I loved including a psychological thriller-ish vibe to more of a character driven than a plot driven and certainly the emotional connection is always present.
A gut-wrenching look into the struggles of living with complex PTSD. In this, the follow-up to Secrets In The Mirror, Gavin and Katie are at a crossroads as Gavin fights to get past the trauma and loss in his life Katie is left to pick up the pieces while running multiple businesses and caring for their daughter, Maggie. Things were difficult on Kauai but when Gavin returns to Boston to take care of his father's estate there are triggers around every corner and the Mob is watching. When Katie and Maggie join him in Boston the stakes get even higher when the whole family's lives are threatened. Will Gavin get the help he needs to combat his C-PTSD? Will Katie be able to be the support he needs? Or will the disease and the past ruin everything for all of them?
Wow, what an emotional journey. The author does a great job of conveying what C-PTSD is about while telling a gripping story about trauma, loss and family dynamics. The writing is descriptive and concise, and the plot is well crafted with a leisurely pace. I loved getting both Gavin and Katie's side of things in this one. It made for a well rounded story to lose yourself in. While I'm sure it does well as a standalone I'm glad I read Secrets In The Mirror first as it added to the emotional depth of the characters. Even though Gavin's struggles are hard to read about, I do look forward to reading where the decisions made in this one take the family next.
Thank you to the author, Atmosphere Press and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.
What Lies Buried is the dynamic sequel to Secrets in the Mirror. I enjoyed the first book and was excited to see what this book had to offer, and it met my expectations. This book continues with Gavin still trying to fight his demons whilst trying to live a fulfilling life. Only his PTSD demons maybe too much for his wife who is trying to support him but has wants and needs of her own. I understand PTSD all too much as it is a demon that I try to fight daily. It’s a monster that is highly unpredictable and sometimes you wonder whether or not it is worth it and that makes me understand this character deeply. What was once in the past is now rearing its ugly head once again. It is one twisted ride. To find out what happens in this complex psychological tale that is raw, dark and full of suspense and intense moments you will have to read it for yourself.
What Lies Buried by Leslie Kain - Review by Amanda Gray
Trigger warning at the beginning of the book: - One of the characters in this story suffers from trauma experienced during childhood and early adulthood. I really appreciate the way this book and the first start out with trigger warnings, it shows the author really has an understanding of the subject matter. As someone who has loved ones struggling with C-PTSD, I found the book poignant and insightful. Another thing I really liked about the book was the quote added to the beginning of every chapter, and there were a lot of chapters. One that I highlighted is:
“We are all a little schizophrenic. Each of us has three different people living inside us every day—who you were, who you are and who you will become. The road to sanity is to recognize those identities, in order to know who you are today.” —Shannon L. Alder
Gavin, is all at one the protagonist and antagonist, that you cannot help rooting for, in spite of wanting to stop and shake him, at times. Katie, the wife of Gavin, is the woman I hope I am, she loves fiercely, she’s stronger than she knows and such a gentle, loving mother, as well as, a creative force to be reckoned with. I felt like the first book wrapped up nicely and that I did not really need a second book. Boy, was I wrong!! This book sucked me in, it made me laugh and cry tears of sadness and joy. Now I REALLY want a third book!!!
What Lies Buried, Leslie Kain, Review, Itsy Bitsy Book Bits, Women's Fiction, Thriller, Amanda Gray, June 2024
I must say this was a bit of a hard read for me because of the PTSD and it’s not a bad thing it’s because I get it and I feel sorry for involved because they’re all “ victims” to someone’s else’s abuse , does that make sense 🤷♀️
Gavin has a loving wife and she’s determined to love and support her husband through this hard and difficult time and it’s not easy ….
Gavin ‘s dad diesand he’s got to back to Boston to sort and settle the estate but his short fuse is going to get him into serious trouble especially with his newfound knowledge of his family history with the mob …..
Katie’s coping mechanism is set and she’s really good at it to and I’m so grateful for the person she is because it takes a strong person to carry another through their darkness and sometimes tough decisions need to be made for everyone‘a safety and well being …..
This is just a reminder that the past will haunt you as will trauma if not dealt with , one can’t just sweep it under the carpet and hope it goes away cause it will jump up and bite you in the rear end !
A hard but beautiful read for me and again keep a supply of Kleenex and emotional snacks 😉on hand .
My god. What Lies Buried, by Leslie Kain. Where do I start? If I thought I connected to the first one, this one absolutely took the cake. Walking beside Gavin for the duration of his journey, was akin to my own. His struggle with complex PTSD, the lasting effects of mental abuse, and how his partner was affected by it had me sobbing practically the whole book. While this could most likely be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading Secrets of The Mirror first, because it'll really help you understand Gavin and why he reacts how he does. Kain is phenomenal, and really does a powerful job of portraying mental illness without prejudice or a purposely negative light, and really does her research on each one. The plot line itself is beautifully crafted, and I refused to put this down for hours on end. Never skip over a Leslie Kain book, I know I won't.

Good storyline, good characters, quick read, I give this book 4 stars.
Fasten your seatbelts, readers, because this novel is a tumultuous ride. In this psychological thriller, Gavin is a tortured soul, plagued by complex PTSD that exacerbates his flight and fight responses to the point of endangering others and himself. His wife, Katie, an artist and mother, must balance the well-being of herself and their child against the needs of her psychiatrically disabled husband. This searing look at how mental illness can impact a family is, at times, disturbing, but readers will root for Katie as she struggles to do what is right.

𝗠𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 This is a very emotional book but shows just how important it is to take mental health issues seriously. It not only affects the person going through it, but their loved ones. This is a sequel to the Secrets in the Mirror, but I read it as a standalone, and it’s completely doable. I think there’s a good chance this isn’t the last we’ll see of Katie and Gavin. Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and @leslie.kain for including me and n this tour.
What Lies Buried by Leslie Kain is a fascinating psychological thriller with rich character development and a riveting storyline. It takes the reader on a journey of understanding the crippling effects of C-PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) while unpacking the complexities of this egregious disorder.
In the beginning, life was a storybook fairytale for Gavin and Katie DiMasi and their sweet baby girl, Maggie. They lived on the beautiful Hawaiian Island of Kauai where the Ono Kulok restaurant was their pride and joy. Gavin was its accomplished chef and quite a successful owner...and just like that, life was about to deliver some crushing blows. The DiMasi’s perfect family was on the precipice of disaster and derailment. Gavin was struggling. He was the sole remaining member alive from his extended family—his father was shot (taking a bullet that was meant for his brother, Devin). His mother is dead (a tragic fall down the stairs in his childhood home). Then there was the death of his identical twin brother Devin (who hanged himself, only to be discovered by Gavin). The death (and discovery) of his brother throws Gavin into an altered world of desperation and denial. He doesn’t trust...anyone. He has night tremors and spirals into fits of anger followed by crippling paranoia. His lifelong curse of guilt over his inability to save his twin from self-destruction consumes him. If not for the strength and support of his loving wife, Katie, and his perfect princess of a daughter, Maggie, he may have already begun his departure from sanity on a direct course to his bottomless pit of no return. However, how much longer can Katie be the strength to bring Gavin back?
As Gavin stares into the imaginary abyss of his thoughts in his perfect home, Katie brings him back to earth when she hands him an envelope. It’s from Levine, McDermott & Lombardi, LLP. Lombardi was his father’s attorney. Reluctant to read its contents, Katie explains she already has. It would seem they are reaching out to have Gavin return to his childhood Boston home to settle his father’s estate. To ease the tension, Katie encourages Gavin to think about taking his brother’s ashes back to Boston to put him to final rest with his deceased parents. Gavin is angry and thinks back to his brother’s death... "Now the weight of his brother’s suicide…seeing him hanging there...in front of the taunting message he left...comes crashing down on him all over again, after he thought he’d finally put it behind him..." (pg. 6) It angered him when he thought about the countless times his father berated him; often reminding him of his inability to succeed at anything. Yet, Devin was the one always getting into trouble. Gavin was the honors student, the track and field star, and the Culinary Institute graduate. It was time—time to face his final reckoning in hopes that putting this last tragedy behind him would heal him. What Katie and Gavin couldn’t possibly know was this would be the crossroads; neither of them could have ever anticipated the actual outcome.
Leslie Kain writes with impressive conviction and soul in a phenomenal way. It is clear from the onset of this book that she wanted to deliver a memory. Her research on the crippling disorder of C-PTSD is fascinating, given the connectivity between her research and how the knowledge was used toward character development. Katie DiMasi (Gavin’s wife) is a pinnacle of strength and is portrayed as the woman who will stand by her man no matter what. Gavin is broken in every aspect of the definition of broken, and the debilitating effects that surface due to his sever C-PTSD are moments that grasp the reader and take him/her on a journey of trepidation toward what could possibly happen next? Is Gavin happy today? Angry? Paranoid? Hopeless? With the cacophony of ups and downs throughout this book, there is never a question that the reader's desire to keep turning the pages will be maintained until the last page. I applaud Ms. Kain for how nurturing and caring she was to expose the emotions and feelings of not only the afflicted (Gavin) but also the damage and destruction C-PTSD causes in what (at times) is an endless nightmare of anxiety held together with a very fragile thread of hope...somewhere. Bravo, Ms. Kain! I cannot wait to read your next book!
Quill says: What Lies Buried is a must-read that reminds the reader of how very complex (and fragile) the human psyche is.
This is the second book in a series, we continue with Gavin and Katie’s story and their struggles with his PTSD. This story is so much more than just a thriller, it’s a complex and gripping family drama that explores abuse, trauma and family dynamics with a bit of mystery. It can be read as a standalone.
Thank you Suzy Approved Book Tours for this tour invite.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 by Leslie Kain Author releases May 14, 2024.
I really liked how we got more of Katie and her POV/feelings throughout this book compared to the first. I think the author did a great job explaining C-PTSD and showing the changes in Gavin to reflect it. His personality was drastically different from the first book and Katie got the brunt of it. Their daughter Maggie was so cute, and I loved how smart she was for her age. She picked up on Gavin’s behavior just like the rest of the people in his life. I liked that there was a mystery involved surrounding the family and the lengths that Gavin went to uncover their secrets. I really liked Katie and I felt so bad for what she and her family had gone through but seeing her grow and become her own separate from Gavin was nice.
Thank you @leslie.kain and @suzyapprovedbooktours for the gifted copy.
The first book in this series consumed me and I was excited to see what was next for Gavin and his family. This second book was even more of a page turner which I didn’t think would be possible. Once again it was a great mix of family dynamics/drama/history with complex PTSD mixed in. I was fully engaged cover to cover and hope this thrilling series will continue!
Leslie Kain, the Author of “What Lies Buried” has written an intense and psychological thriller sequel to “Secrets in the Mirror”. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Psychological Thriller, Suspense and Mystery. In this well written novel, the author vividly describes the plot, scenery and dramatic characters. Gavin is Married to Katie, and they have a young daughter. After Gavin’s twin brother’s death, and Gavin’s abuse at his toxic and dysfunctional family, he is suffering from Complex PTSD. Gavin has to revisit Boston to settle his father’s estate, and has to come to terms with all the betrayals, gaslighting, and secrets, in order to avoid disabling triggers.
Katie is determined, and courageous, and is keeping her family safe. They have a support dog, and there is psychological support from family, and friends, and professionals. Both Katie and Gavin look to keep their loved ones safe. Unfortunately, Gavin is dealing with the ghosts of his family, and the mob. One of the properties that he has to decide to sell or keep, holds many deep secrets.
Gavin is having nightmares, and attacks from triggers. He is not behaving the way Katie is used to seeing. Katie has to determine whether she can help and save Gavin, and keep her family together. Katie has secrets of her own. I appreciate how the author encourages mental support and help for people suffering from Complex PTSD. I would highly recommend this intense and thought-provoking novel.
Every once in a while, a book comes along that makes you question why you even bothered to finish it. What Lies Buried by Leslie Kain is, unfortunately, one of those books. Packed with convoluted storytelling, characters who feel more like cardboard cutouts than real people, and a plot that drags on without delivering much of anything, this novel is an exercise in patience rather than suspense.
The title What Lies Buried promises, but what’s actually buried is any hope of an engaging story. Kain attempts to write a psychological thriller, but the suspense is so watered down that by the time anything remotely interesting happens, you’ve already lost all investment. The story meanders through lifeless dialogue, predictable plot twists, and characters making decisions that defy common sense.
A strong thriller hinges on its characters, but this novel fails to deliver anyone worth cheering for. The protagonist is frustratingly bland, and their internal struggles are so over-explained that any sense of subtlety is completely lost. Supporting characters? Forgettable. Villains? Predictable. No one in this book feels like a real person, just a collection of clichés thrown together to move the plot forward.
Kain’s writing is the kind that desperately wants to sound intelligent and profound but instead comes across as clunky and overwritten. The prose is bogged down by excessive description, unnecessary introspection, and dialogue that doesn’t sound remotely natural. The pacing is equally off—the book drags where it should be gripping and rushes through the few moments that could have been compelling.
If you’re hoping for a thrilling, psychological deep novel, you’ll be sorely disappointed. The pacing is inconsistent, the plot lacks urgency, and the conclusion is as underwhelming as the rest of the book. By the end, I wasn’t shocked, moved, or even mildly entertained—I was just relieved it was over.
Final Verdict: A Total Miss
If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that actually delivers, there are far better books out there. What Lies Buried is the kind of novel that makes you appreciate well-paced, well-written mysteries even more—because this isn’t one of them.
This is the sequel to the book Secrets In The Mirror. I strongly recommend reading that book first so that you get the fully understand the trauma that Gavin has suffered, it helps you to understand and appreciate what has drove him to be the way he is now suffering with PTSD. This is a psychological suspense story but what really stood out for me was the authors incredibly ability to allow the reader a deeper insight into the person's life who suffer from PTSD, how they are affected but also how it affects their own family and everyone close to them. This subject is dealt with in a way that is informative but also respectful allowing the reader to fully understand just how many it affects people's lives.
There is also family drama, and secrets that will be revealed. With Gavin's parents dead and now his twin brother, his PTSD is worse than every before. He now has to return to his childhood home to deal with what is left of his parents home. However Gavin returning isn't an easy thing. Not only does he have to deal with all the past trauma, but there is also secrets he is yet to unearth and with the added danger of people still looking for him Gavin knows this place isn't safe for him anymore. But will confronting all of his past and demons be the thing he needs to start and heal himself?
Meanwhile at home his wife Katie is suffering her own problems. She loves Gavin and will do anything she can to help support him and help him. However, she knows feels like she is the only adult left in the marriage. Not only does she have to take care of Gavin but also their daughter and keep their business running. Can she continue the be strong and take care of everything including her husband's mental health or will it get to much and mean she will have to make the decision to support her husband or protect their daughter.
This is a really moving and thought provoking story. My heart goes out to both Katie and Gavin because neither of them wants their life to be the way it is with PTSD controlling every aspects of their lives.
In What Lies Buried by Leslie Kain, the narrative immerses readers in a world shaped by the haunting aftermath of suicide and the complex web of PTSD. Leslie Kain's writing style is notable for its depth and psychological insight, effectively drawing readers into the protagonist Gavin's internal struggle. The aftermath of his brother Devon's suicide, coupled with a suicide note that blames Gavin, propels him into the depths of PTSD. This situation is further complicated when Gavin is summoned to handle his father's estate, unveiling layers of past trauma and mob threats.
Kain's approach to character development is robust, particularly in the gradual transition of focus from Gavin to another central character, Kate. This shift adds dimension to the narrative, introducing new perspectives and escalating tension. The dual perspectives in the narrative structure initially position Gavin as the primary character, but as the story unfolds, Kate's role becomes more prominent, adding depth and complexity to the plot. Katie's character is resilient yet vulnerable as she navigates through the turmoil of her husband's deteriorating mental state. The author skillfully transports the reader into Gavin's mindset, enabling them to vividly experience his anxiety and the constant struggle he faces with PTSD. The book goes beyond traditional thriller elements, offering a nuanced exploration of personal trauma and family dynamics. While it might not align with conventional thriller expectations, Kain's rich storytelling, marked by well-developed characters and an integrated backstory, provides a thoughtful reading experience.
The author's ability to create engaging world-building and intricate character arcs strengthens the bond between the narrative and the reader, making What Lies Buried a compelling read that deeply engages with its characters' internal struggles and the impacts on their relationships.
Immediately upon starting this book, I was heartbroken reading how the character, Gavin, was dealing with trauma, PTSD, and learning of the emotional abuse he experienced throughout his lifetime. Seeing the impact it had on his daily life, let alone his work in his and his wife’s restaurant is downright agonizing. On the flip side, his wife’s life is turned upside down and also that of their toddler daughter. They learn to recognize and gently react, as needed when the PTSD triggers a hypersensitive reaction from Gavin. Anyone who has dealt with or knows someone who has dealt with any aspect of this type of trauma can relate to the way the author describes these reactions and the consequences of them.
When Gavin reluctantly visits his father’s estate to wrap up any lingering issues, you learn more about his family, his past, and the mob. His personal struggles are causing him to behave erratically and being back in Boston isn’t helping his situation either.
Gavin’s wife, Katie has a lot on her plate. Besides constantly worrying about Gavin and his health, she is running the restaurant on her own, raising their daughter and running the art gallery. Due to her previous love of art, she is well placed with the art gallery. This incredible story shows Katie as her love and appreciation for art expands. If you are creative in any way, her art journey and passion will resonate with you.
The overall book flows well thanks to the creative way the author chose to tell this story. The characters are not perfect, so that makes them more relatable on all levels. I enjoyed reading this book and felt as if I could not put it down. I wanted to know what was coming next and lost a bit of sleep over it. I think the mysterious tone was consistent and not overly complex, which made reading this so satisfying.
In this gripping sequel to SECRETS IN THE MIRROR, readers return to the world of Gavin and Katie, a young couple attempting to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of trauma, grief, and extreme family dysfunction.
Gavin, who witnessed the brutal deaths of his parents and his abusive twin brother, is struggling with Complex PTSD and is resistant to therapy. Katie loves him and wants only to help, but she must also protect herself, their daughter, and their unborn child.
When he returns from Hawaii to Boston to take care of his inheritance, triggers multiple and so do threats from his family's old mob connections. Once Katie and Maggie join him, the danger becomes real, and Gavin unravels fast.
It's heartbreaking to see the impact his illness has on those who love him, but it also feels painfully realistic. I applaud the author for tackling Complex PTSD in fiction. Not easy!
Katie is a strong woman who must also revisit the past. But her journey comes with hope as she begins to rediscover dreams she put aside to care for her dying mother. Little Maggie is a joy, and the two of them find new friends and a supportive community in Boston. But can the family stay together? Will Gavin get the help he needs?
My heart went out to Gavin and Katie, and I look forward to reading more about them.
Had the pleasure of getting an early read to the sequel to Secrets in the Mirror and I have to say, that I enjoyed it even more than the first book. When we enter the story, Gavin is feeling the repercussions of all of the abuse and death he has experienced during his life.
**MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD** When he travels to Boston to figure out the estate of his family, the darkness really takes over, and starts taking him down a very bleak path. Katie, his wife, rushes back to Boston as well, to try to save him, because since she was a young child, she's always put aside her own needs to take care of others: her parents, Gavin, her daughter. But while she's doing that (along with juggling a toddler and being pregnant), she also finds herself yearning to figure out more about who she is, and that's where the book really finds its heart.
Katie rediscovers her love of art and in turn rediscovers herself. She realizes that she is more than just someone who's job is to safe everyone else at the same time that Gavin's PTSD gets much worse, putting his whole family in danger. The overarching question is...can Katie become who she is meant to be, with Gavin so broken...or will painful sacrifices have to be made.
I will start much like the author did, with a gentle warning. This book delves deep into trauma and the PTSD that the character has been diagnosed with.
The trauma that Gavin endured is unimaginable - from his mother and father’s deaths to his identical twin’s suicide. But the scars and wounds go even deeper, leaving Gavin reacting to triggers - it has changed him, and it’s affecting his entire life.
Katie, Gavin’s wife, is incredibly supportive, even setting aside many of her dreams, but she walks on eggshells due to Gavin’s highly unpredictable behavior. Katie also wants to protect their young daughter Maggie from all this, as she knows part of Gavin’s wounds are from generational abuse. However, when Gavin’s past puts Maggie in danger, Katie needs to make some big decisions.
Wow, this is an intense, emotional read. This is the continuation of 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑀𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑟, and I feel this isn’t the end of the story. There is a lot to unpack here, and you have to be ready for it: abuse, gaslighting, grief and loss, PTSD, marriage troubles, even the mob is involved. The author does a great job of showing the effects of trauma and how important it is to get the proper help.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @leslie.kain for a spot on tour and a gifted book.
I didn’t hesitate for a split second to pick up this book because the first one, Secrets In The Mirror, was extraordinary. Somehow the author surpassed even that with this phenomenal sequel. There are many conditions talked about that hit close to home for me, so I definitely shed some tears throughout, but it was well worth it. I always love dual points of view because it makes you feel like you can get into the characters’ heads just a little bit more. Gavin is fighting for his life opposite the hands of his complex PTSD from childhood trauma. Katie is the immovable force in her relationship with Gavin, but she will be put to the test once old trauma resurfaces. The author again grips you with their ability to expertly craft the story and allowing it to unfold naturally. As you can imagine, there are difficult topics detailed within these pages, but the author has kindly provided a content warning in the beginning. I highly recommend giving this a chance if you’re able to because it will captivate you as well as give you a deeper insight into C-PTSD. I will be picking up the next book as soon as humanly possible!
What Lies Buried is the dramatic sequel to ‘Secrets in the Mirror’ where we continue Gavin’s journey, and although it could be read as a standalone if you wanted- I feel that knowing what happened in the first book will give you a better understanding of Gavin, and a better appreciation of the story. This is a bit of a psychological suspense with emotion, twists, secrets, action, suspense, tension, drama, complex characters, and more. Gavin struggles with his mental health, his PTSD complicating things deeply. He yearns to move on, to shake off his demons and escape the shackles of his PTSD to enjoy his life with his wife Katie. Their marriage is feeling the strains that his mental health has placed on it. Katie, who has done her utmost to support him through everything, has her own needs which aren’t being met. But what lies buried, seems to always find a way of coming to light- which makes this an intriguing read. Happy Reading…
"What Lies Buried" by Leslie Kain explores the complexities of trauma and how a troubled generational family history can lay damage at the feet of its survivor. Kain's background as a psychologist shines through in her nuanced portrayal of the main character Gavin DiMasi, capturing the intricacies of his battle with Complex PTSD and its ripple effects on relationships. The side story of Gavin’s wife, Katie, and her journey of self-discovery in confronting her own past weaves into a seamless line of authenticity. I appreciated that Kain doesn't shy away from portraying the messy, painful realities of trauma and its aftermath. While “What Lies Buried” is a sequel to Kain’s "Secrets In The Mirror", I read it as a standalone with no difficulty in threading the storylines together. A must read for anyone who has experienced trauma or struggles as the caregiver to a person with PTSD to better understand the disorder and the enormous burdens shouldered by the caregiver.
This is a very complex story that comes with trigger warnings and I suggest you read them. This is also a sequel and I would recommend reading the first installment before taking up this one because things will be some much more clear if you do. Kain takes us on an emotional rollercoaster throughout the entirety of the book both with Gavin and Katie. This is a really fast-paced novel and the characters are fantastically written and developed. My heart broke so many times for Gavin, Katie, and Maggie throughout the book. There is just so much in here that it can be overwhelming at times so it's very important that you, the reader, understand the trigger warnings and take breaks when needed. There were parts in the story that triggered me quite literally out of the blue so this is definitely a read that you need to take caution with when going in to it. But don't let that deter you. Kain has done a remarkable job representing C-PTSD authentically and her writing is so deep and rich.
What Lies Buried by Leslie Kain. This is such a good read. Its very difficult to read about a very real situation that many people face and we have no idea. Gavin is diagnosed with PTSD complex syndrome and he battles a war in his mind by the minute. His wife Katie tries to be the best support system he can have but at times she is struggling as well. When Gavin returns to Boston to take care of his father's estate he finds out his family was involved in the mob and that adds to his mental condition. The mob is watching every move he makes. Katie also finds out stuff her mom has hid from her and she begins to realize that she has some trauma herself from her childhood. Will she be able to help Gavin as well as come to terms with her own demons? Gavin is resisting treatment so he is becoming more and more unstable. Such a tough book to read but such a amazing job done in writing it. This is one of the best books I've read this year.
