"But before the ambrosia could touch her lips, a large hand wrapped around the glass and pulled it from her grasp.

Without breaking eye contact, the stranger downed the ambrosia in one long gulp. As he swallowed, the golden liquid lit up his throat, like molten metal flowing through Hephaestus’ forge."

From the moment Persephone met Hades, Lord of the Underworld, she felt an undeniable connection. All she had to do was gain the god's attention, ensure he felt the same, and they'd all live happily ever after.

Oh, and a potential beau that believes himself unworthy of love.

Minor problems, really.

Thank you to Booksprout and Eve Singleton for allowing me to read an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest, voluntary review. When I went into this book, I was not prepared for the wholesome, yet action packed story that this book holds. It really allowed those who were not familiar with the original myth to still enjoy it while still being able to attract those who went through a Greek mythology phase, like myself. This book was also filled with humor and allowed for a wonderful introduction to this series. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a wonderful Hades and Persephone retelling.

It just was a bit boring? Meant to a retelling where Persephone had more agency but literally it’s intsa love and she spends ages trying to get a guys attention.
It’s a yeah nah from me

In "Courting the Underworld," Eve Singleton masterfully reimagines the classic tale of Hades and Persephone, transporting readers into a world where ancient myth meets modern romance. This novel is not just a book; it's an experience that lingers long after the last page. The anticipation for the sequel, especially given the cliffhanger ending, is a testament to the story’s captivating nature. From the outset, Singleton sets a high bar and effortlessly exceeds it, weaving a narrative that is both familiar in its roots and refreshingly innovative in its execution.

Singleton's twist on the myth is ingenious, placing Persephone in the role of the pursuer in a contemporary setting, while maintaining the essence of the original tale. This modern-day retelling breathes new life into the ancient story, making it relatable and engaging for today's audience. It’s the delicate balance between honoring the myth and infusing it with fresh perspectives that makes "Courting the Underworld" a standout. Singleton's portrayal of Persephone as a young goddess striving for autonomy strikes a chord with the New Adult demographic, making her character not just a figure of myth but a symbol of modern-day challenges and aspirations.

Hades, traditionally seen as dark and foreboding, is reimagined here with depth and nuance. His portrayal as a moody loner and a devoted dog-dad to Cerberus adds layers to his character, making him both more approachable and intriguing. The slow-burning romance between Persephone and Hades is a dance of emotions, beautifully capturing the ebb and flow of their feelings. This nuanced development of their relationship lends authenticity to their story, allowing readers to invest deeply in their journey.

The supporting characters are the unsung heroes of this tale, adding humor, depth, and a touch of whimsy to the narrative. They enrich the worlds of Earth, Olympus, and the Underworld, ensuring that the story transcends the boundaries of a simple romance. Singleton’s third-person narrative is a triumph, creating an immersive experience that is both easy to read and rich in detail. The vivid descriptions of the various settings transport readers directly into the heart of the story, making the novel a true escape into the realms of gods and goddesses.

Beyond the compelling narrative, "Courting the Underworld" is enhanced by beautiful silhouette images that depict key scenes, adding an artistic flair to the storytelling. For those less familiar with Greek mythology, Singleton provides an insightful introduction to the key characters, making the book accessible to a wide range of readers. This novel is a perfect pick for fans of clean romance, especially younger women, looking for a blend of mythological enchantment and contemporary allure.

"Courting the Underworld" is a beautifully crafted retelling that seamlessly melds the ancient with the modern. Eve Singleton has created a narrative that is as enchanting as it is relatable, making it a must-read for anyone who loves romance, mythology, and rich storytelling. The novel invites us to revisit a classic myth through a fresh lens, reminding us that even the oldest tales can find new life in the hands of a skilled storyteller.

Excuse me? A debut novel? Seriously? You have to be kidding me as Courting the Underworld slays! It was that kind of "smashed me to smithereens, thoughtfully swept me up and glued me together again" good

There is a wonderful resurgence of greek myth retellings and I am absolutely here for it. I am really enjoying the different voices we are lucky enough to experience in this genre and so muny different styles. I am not usually a reader of New Adult (at my age, the "new" wore off a couple decades back) but still, there are some authors I can get behind and Eve Singleton is one of them

I really like that this is going to be a series as the original legends did not stop at one tale, so please please keep them coming (I am of an era where stop frame animation of Jason and the Argonauts was a big rerun in my childhood so by eckers yes please!) On to the review!

Singleton has flipped the tale on its head to work well in the 21st century while maintaining the integrity of the original tale. I am absolutely invested in an urban fantasy retelling and the illustrations were a nice touch in the arc, although I honestly think that the writing is strong enough to carry the book without, but they are a nice touch. Another nice touch is singletons descriptions of the characters, grounding them in the original telling of the story yet artfully bringing them to the modern age which a lot of younger readers will adore (clean reading)

The narrative flows well, is engaging and immersive. Thoroughly enjoyable

Oh my god. This has to be my favourite Hades x Persephone retelling. This book had such a different view on their story, and I absolutely loved it. This book was the easiest 5/5 that I’ve ever given.

Persephone was such a strong character, and I loved that the way the author gave justice to her. Persephone has always been a strong goddess, and it killed me that writers perceived her as someone weak, or as a damsel in distress. She was levelheaded, she was smart, she was clear about what she wanted, but she also understood her boundaries, and where to push and where to step back. Her understanding of the differences between her world and Hades’ world was apt, and she really understood the weight of it. She has to be one of my favourite characters ever written.

Hades was also completely different than what readers have been told before. He was cautious, and guarded. While he’s known to be flirty and unimportant, but Hades is so much more than that, and this book showed the true nature of the God. He did not underestimate Persephone’s power, nor did he underestimate his own power, by constantly reminding himself of his past mistakes and how he could not repeat them. He was devoted to Persephone, enough to stand up for her multiple times (even though, it is the bare minimum). I loved the portrayal of his character.

The book’s slow burn kept me on edge constantly. I took my time with this book because I needed to absorb every word that the author had written. The illustrations in the book were absolutely incredible, and I will be sharing my favourites soon. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a new perspective of Hades x Persephone.

There are several aspects about this book I enjoyed.

First I'd like to appreciate the introductory section talking about the source material of the story, giving context but also making it abundantly clear, that it's an inspired retelling, not a judgement or improvement of the myth it is based on.

When it comes to the setting, I did not expect it to take place in the modern world with the Greek gods openly existing. It is a refreshing take and gives many opportunities to show how the gods would adapt to and deal with modern technologies and culture.

Regarding the depiction of the gods, I can only say that I absolutely enjoyed them. While aspects of certain gods we nowadays perceive as flaws were portrayed and discussed, it didn't feel like the author was judging or talking down upon the pantheon. It always remained respectful on a certain level. This is something I appreciate a lot, as there are still many people who do in fact worship the Greek gods nowadays.
Persephone herself was an absolute joy to follow. She didn't feel clichéd, too timid or too overbearing. Her portrayal felt real and relatable.
Hades was depicted nicely as well. I especially enjoyed his interactions with Cerberus and Hecate. His puppy dad mode was hilarious and adorable at the same time.

Another aspect of the book I'd like to compliment are the little art pieces of the characters. They give a great visual impression of the characters and scenes.

Review :

I had an absolute blast with this book!

I adored how the author flipped the script on the Persephone and Hades story, giving it this super cute and fluffy vibe!

Something that really marked me was the emphasis on consent and boundaries throughout the story, ensuring a refreshing and lighthearted read from start to finish.

*The author explains in the beginning of the book that she did change some aspects of the original tale to fit the story and to make it more modern.*

‘Courting the Underworld’ was an absolute comfort read for me. It’s hard to put into words my love for this book. The meet-cute between Persephone and Hades was utterly adorable, and their mutual but oblivious obsession with each other added an extra layer of charm to the story.

One of the unexpected highlights was the humor—this book had me laughing far more than I anticipated, and it was so much fun.

I have to mention that there is a touch of angst towards the end, but it was the kind of hurt that made me read the same chapter 3 times.

“You’re going to suffer… but you’re going to be happy about it.”

In summary, I wholeheartedly loved this book and would really recommend it! While it falls into the YA romantasy genre due to its mythological roots, it’s worth noting that the book does touch upon mature themes (s.e.x), without any explicit spice .

I went into this book blind only knowing it was a retelling of the Persephone and Hades romance. I didn't dislike it, but more just disliked certain aspects. The overbearance of Demeter on her daughter is almost too much especially with Zeus (aka world's worst dad / husband) making a pass at his own daughter. While I acknowledge the gods do it differently - as denoted in the useful explanation at the front - it was hard to seperate human concepts of familial relations. Specifically - her going for her uncle as they continually say or getting hit on by her brother? Cousin?

For all Persephone works to maintain autonomy, it's interesting how Hades tempers her desires by maintaining she did not consider his consent in the matter. Interesting hot take on it for sure. Infantilising Persephone while also commodifying her really puts her in a weird viewpoint as her mum impresses upon her her own misgivings.

An altogether whimsical retelling of an old story, with good and bad parts. Loved the inclusion of Cerberus getting into trouble but hard to take serious with "puppers," being said.

This was such a cute lil comfy retelling. It reminded me of the times when I used to be obsessed with Greek mythology, all the gods and especially the underworld .

I’ve also never read a romance book with Hades & Persephone before and I have to admit I really love this dynamic. When he called her his equal, I LOVED that.
It’s also interesting how in this book Persephone is portrayed as being the pursuer in the relationship. That was a nice twist.

Hades being a moody loner who calls himself “daddy” when he talks to his dog Cerberus made me snort. I’ve always been a fan of Hades and mo matter where he gets mentioned, I’ll always enjoy reading about him.

“Courting The Underworld” is a slow burn with a wild ending and lots of family drama. Overall it was a very quick, wholesome read and for everyone who’s wondering..
it ends in a lil cliffhanger which means the story will continue 📖

I also wanted to thank Eve again for being so kind and sending me this book and even signing it and writing a cute lil message. Thank you so much, I’ll go and eat a pomegranate now (iykyk) ;) ❤️

A modernised retelling of Persephone and Hades.

Courting the Underworld follows Persephone and Hades as they explore their undeniable connection. I adored the characterisation given to each god and deity mentioned, mimicking the mythological personalities and staying true to the original myths while providing elements of modernisation. Personally I loved the strong willed portrayal of Persephone, her being the pursuer in the relationship. I appreciated how this book seamlessly intertwined vital elements of the original story, unafriad of the gritty aspects of the myth. I also appreciated the construction of Hades and his evident grown.

This book is a cosy retelling, that follows a love slowly blossoming in a place where many thought impossible. I would recommend it to fans of mythology, romance and cosy fantasy books.

⭐️⭐️.5 (please read the FULL review if you are trying to gauge whether you want to eat this(especially the warning))

This book got a lower rating than God of Fury (the unashamed version) I believe and for good reason. This book was simply boring (not in like a ‘this makes the book un readable’ way) and the reason that I chose to give it three stars and round up is because it had so much potential and it was genuinely well done, but the angst wasn’t enough to carry the book.

Normally, when you have to carry a book, you either use a plot, angst/humor or a dangerous character (not meaning that that person can kill you, but the fact is that it has to be either an overused archetype with a twist or just a normal overused archetype that sort of act as a defiance to change a classic or something that’s really risqué). None of these changes that I mentioned previously were used in this book, or not in the way that I usually prefer.

While I don’t love this book a lot, I actually believe it’s pretty slept on because I know that a lot of people would appreciate this kind of book, but there are things that could be done to make it more interesting to a reader as it doesn’t have a large fan base to back it up, one of those things being shortening the title because that really threw me off.

Also not a big fan of the synopsis because while I love it and I always appreciate a good synopsis it sort of just promises too much and doesn’t deliver to the people who were wishing for a bad ass vibe, In my personal opinion (Which was never really guaranteed, but it’s just something that can easily be misread).

Right now, I feel like I’m trashing it a bit, especially after I just said that GOF had a higher rating in my opinion, but I do love the messages and I love the intent behind it and it was a genuinely well written book

I am saying all of this in defense of the book even though I don’t love it because I sometimes like really trashy books if they have the things that hit the spot for me and this just doesn’t, and that doesn’t make it a bad book, especially considering the fact that the things that do hit the spot are very particular and slightly weird.

Final Note: I do recommend this book if you like reading Hades and Persephone retellings but don’t really like the whole alpha male thing that happens in some of them (even though I have found some really nice ones that don’t have that and I still love)

WARNING: I definitely do not recommend this book if you’re in the middle of a slump and trying to get back into your reading groove [?]

I enjoyed this, I thought it was pretty cute and I'm DEFINITELY waiting for the second one. There were a few sections that were maybe a little long, and a few that were a little short, but given that this is a debut novel, I'm not going to hold that against the author. That's something that usually takes a bit to get the hang of.

I was very torn on whether or not to get this book at first. A lot of stories (especially ones that are marketed as female empowerment) tend to really demonize Hades, which I'm not a fan of, so I was glad to see that this one didn't go that route.

I would have liked a little more romance in this one, but I'm okay looking forward to seeing how their relationship progresses in the next book.

Courting the Underworld is a witty romp of a Hades X Persephone retelling with a magnificent cast of characters! The characters were well-developed and so entertaining. Zeus and Hades’ relationship is one of my favorite sibling relationships ever. I laughed so much whenever they were around. Aphrodite is the best aunt EVER. Kathryn and Roy were the sweetest elderly figures who I fell in love with, even though I only got a glance at them. I love how the gods’ interactions with each other made them feel like a family. 10/10 recommend!

I really enjoyed this book. Its such a different take for Persephone & Hades and it works.

I liked seeing Persephone take the initiative, and Hades being the more unsure character.

I also adored the illustrations in this one, I may have to purchase the physical copy for those alone.

I didn't know going in that this would be more than 1 book, but I am not excited for the next installment

🥀 Courting the Underworld by Eve Singleton 🥀

🖤 Hades X Persephone
🥀 BOLD Persephone
🖤 Dog daddy vibes
🥀 Modern world

When we have a Hades x Persephone story where Persephone is the BOLD, FORWARD one, I’m all in. In most renditions of this classic tale, Hades must lure or entice Persephone in some way. I’m all for women taking the initiative in all things — work, love, life in general.

Persephone takes fate into her own hands, and while she’s also patient, she’s also persistant. She knows what she wants, and she isn’t afraid to go after it.

The language throughly this story was beautiful. It’s written with a sense of regality with the language balanced against the modern actions of dining out and working a genuine retail job. It’s the balancing of this juxtaposition throughout that I find so compelling: it feels both old and new; Homerian and modern.

Spice: 🫑
Recommend: YES!
It’s a clean, cozy read — with darker moments — and it’s just the first in the series. 😈

I received an advanced reader copy of Courting the Underworld in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the author for this opportunity.

To call myself a fan of Greek mythology and modern-day retellings is an understatement, so it was a no-brainer to say yes to the opportunity to read this reimagining of Hades and Persephone‘s story.

I liked that the author explained how this book would be taking the original story and spinning it into something completely differently, where Persephone has agency in her own fate and the roles are almost reversed in a way more modern-world setting. However, as I delved deeper and deeper into the story, I couldn’t help but think that I would have liked the whole plot more if it had gone a step further in the direction of being a reimagining (think of what ACOTAR is for Beauty and the Beast, or For the Wolf in comparison to both Red Riding Hood and Beauty and the Beast).

What confused me a bit was the occasional mention of things happening in other decades, and the fact that apparently Persephone had been scheming for centuries. I guess what bothers me about that is that, obviously, humans do not think on the same time scales as gods, and therefore this aspect made me feel disconnected from the story and the characters. I think a good way to resolve this would just be to not mention dates or periods or time spans explicitly and rather opting for alluding to them in a more general way.

I liked the characters and thought the book was a very quick read. I don’t think readers who are looking for a retelling along the lines of Madeline Miller, Natalie Haynes or Rosie Hewlett would find what they are looking for in this one as it really takes the original in a whole other direction rather than adding another point of view to it. However, it is a sweet and well-developed romance with funny and engaging side characters.

All in all, I’m not sure I‘m invested enough in the fate of these characters to want to read the sequel.

3.5/5 stars.
