new all time fav couple and book boyfriend alert 💖 (this is a review for all volumes released so far btw)
i devoured this in one sitting because i could not pull myself away from how amazing this couple is together. they give off some of the most powerful couple vibes i've read. i'm so obsessed with them, i would literally do anything for them. this is the couple i refuse to hear criticisms about (i mean i will, but i will cry though…😞). the plot was is intense, the development of the storyline is perfection, the chemistry? the fucking chemistry? y'all are not ready...i was holding my breath every time they were on page together. the character development? jake got so soft for shin. and despite everything that was going on between them and jake's background, shin was slowly starting to accept jake as well. jake is in a gang, so i love how shin didn't easily trust him or ignore his suspicions towards him. but don't worry jake is a green flag (trust me y'all just have to read it). he may be a gangster, but there was no way shin could keep himself from jake. they are like magnets. who would want to be away from daddy jake who is the king of protectiveness and who would kill for you anyway?? 😌

where shin leaves, but then has a realization about jake and goes back to kiss him...i was beside myself. i was screaming and kicking and giggling so hard, but also was wanting to cry because of how happy i was. i adore moments like these.
i gotta say, the art is phenomenal. i love how it was done. the intense looks, the pure want and passion they have on their faces for each other. the blushing, the sweat......😩✋ the possessive waist/neck/jaw/shoulder grabs, the emphasis on just how opposites they are. their size difference. they are both hot muscular men but jake is a whole new level and when they were in the same frame together where you could see just how much bigger he was....my gawddddd, i couldn't handle it. when jake showed up at shin's house, picked him up, and just DEVOURED him? jaw dropped and speechless. THE SHOWER SCENE??? THE CAR SCENE??? those sex scenes were next level. not just because they were *cough* extremely detailed *cough* but it was because their chemistry and sexual tension is through the roof.
also, another reason why i love this manhwa so much is because it has more of an equal dynamic between the main characters. there was no damsel in distress, no doormat characters who just take all the other main character's shit, there is NO non con here unlike so many other manhwa. and there was actually a plot besides all the sex scenes. i mean it's not that i don't like those (but i at least prefer one's with no non con) but it's a refreshing change and i could read manhwa like this for the rest of my life.

currently on chapter 105! would rate this somewhere in the low 4-star category but, it’s not near finished so i’m suspecting it’ll increase.
i was really hesitant to read this because of how the… ml looked, but i kept hearing good things about it and decided to randomly pick it up. defo worth it.
i really like the mc - he has such an interesting and normal personality that isn’t… twinkified and the typical manhwa bottom 😭😭 the romance i didn’t expect to gaf about but, it somehow became really romantic in an unique way and their dynamic is something that always keeps me intrigued. and, this manhwa actually has an actual plot?? im excited to see where things go.
to be honest, i dont care about the ml but, we also didnt get anything about him in terms of his personal feelings outside of the relationship like flashbacks or anything. i feel like when that happens, i might care about him. he treats the mc well so i like him in that aspect. this also had a lot of smut and it’s the type that has plot or romantic shit in it so, i had to properly read it and not skim. i guess they were always in some new position and place or doing some new kink so, even though the smut was tedious for me, it was somewhat more interesting that the other smut in manhwa… im also not the hugest fan of the art (the ml. ha.) but, when i started reading, it became something i could ignore.
i’m honestly excited to see how manhwa continues and it’s already quite good for something that doesn’t seem to be finishing for a long time. the plot and the relationship progress are going to keep me locked in for upcoming chapters.

still ongoing, finished 103 chaps.
i call this the tough boi yaoi (some other specimens of the genre are wet sand, walk on water, under the green light, etc).
plot: this is a criminal drama that takes place in the states, specifically NY. unlike wet sand where most chars are still koreans, here its mostly americans. this is tricky cuz social norms are very different between SK and USA so here and there i find myself rolling my eyes at how koreanized these americans are lol. (but tbf its not the worst ive seen so 3 out of 5?)
the plot overall is nothing to write home about. like, its okay, if somewhat straightforward and slowish, not least cuz the mains have to fuck every five chapters or so. it also has these artificial turns and twists to move the plot along (shoutout to that junkyard scene lol). so its not the worst but not the best either. mediocre, id say.
shin: the MC, a korean american who got adopted from SK by a couple of junkheads from the states. along with a bunch of other 'lucky' kids. suffice it to say, his life growing up wasn't a pot of buttercups. after being fucked over by his ex-lover, he lost his gig as an auto mechanic and turned to street half-scam/half-hustle to earn his crust. thats how he one day crosses paths with jake.
*one thing about shin thou is that sometimes its a mystery to me why he does the things he does and says the things he says. but it might be just a me problem.
jake: the ML, a member of the street gang called Merciful. yeah, its the guy who creeps everyone out. he deffo looks rather unusual being an albino + a buzzcut. but it's his attitude that won me over. i think jake is a good balance of traditionally masculine traits without stepping into the toxic red flag territory. hes cocky and ruthless, but also protective and caring towards shin esp as they grow closer.
main couple: honestly their dynamic is what keeps me coming for more. their affair starts out as something transactional and lust-based, but then grows into something more genuine and emotional. ride-or-die couples are my faves.
art: i think the art style is not gonna be for everyone. its very rough and masculine. but to me there is a certain charm to it. overall, it looks very competent. like with most manhwas nowadays, the backgrounds are 3d renders which i honestly am sick of seeing everywhere, but i get it, they save a lot of time - its a trade-off. but what i did like are the color palettes that the artist chose for different scenes, they make the manhwa look almost cinematic in a way.
another thing of note, its the clothes. its nice when the creator pays attention to clothes. most characters here have their own style and taste. like shin mostly sticks to the same jeans and flannels, while jake prefers something more classy but he also shows more variation in his style which points at their different backgrounds. shin is somehow who grew up poor and wearing whatever, prolly secondhand too, while u can tell jake is someone from a more refined and well-off background where clothes is a status symbol.
anyway, give it a try. it might surprise u.

I am reviewing the first volume as the entire first season which ends on chapter/episode 42.
Shutline is about a guy named Shin who's barely getting by as a sort of freelance mechanic on the mean city streets. Work doesn't come easy so when Jake, a man who oozes money, pulls up with car trouble one day, Shin immediately jumps at this opportunity. He helps with his car just enough, but gives him his number just in case he has any more issues. Little does Shin know Jake may be more trouble than the paycheck is worth and he may be wanting more than just a mechanic...
I have mixed feelings about this series. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. I think the story is interesting and the smut is good. The art is pretty hit or miss for me. I know it's a pretty common style in manhwa in general. Similar to JAXX's style, but it's just so exaggerated sometimes it makes me laugh. I do really like the way the shading and textures are done though. That's absolutely gorgeous.
My main thing is the story. It feels very poorly researched and kind of childish in a way. I mean Jake works for some sort of gang organization and there's a lot happening with like corruption and drugs, but it all seems so shallow and not really thought out? There are situations that just don't quite make sense or fit. And I mean I'm not expecting a whole deep dive analysis on the inner workings of Jake's job or a detailed explanation on drug trafficking. The primary purpose of this is supposed to be a smutty romance with a little mystery, but I think if you're going to include those aspects they should at least feel a little realistic. I'm hoping it improves in the next season, which I need to get into at some point. I think there are a lot of interesting things at work. Just hoping they're executed well.

This is my second read of Shutline, and yeah, I'm still completely obsessed. The TENSION was tensioning. The DANGER was DANGERING. And the ART? 🥵 This is a ride I'm happy to hop back on anytime. And I think this just fixed my reading slump as well. Someday I wanna get my hands on physical copies of the whole series. Unfortunately, they aren't anywhere near me.
