July 10, 2024With each book I do a short post here on Goodreads to share a bit about my thought process behind the story’s creation. Mass Infliction is very special to me as it wraps up the first multiple book story arc in my writing career. While a tremendous creative challenge, it also presented a unique opportunity to bring Det. Remy into another conflict built around important themes of our times.
As Michael Crichton displayed in many of his books, technology can be used for great good and for great harm. Many years since his death we have seen the astounding acceleration of technological advances for making our lives easier, as well as its abuse in the hands of those with evil intent. In Mass Infliction, I wanted to show what could happen if a rogue group of software experts combine forces and unleash their destructive genius upon an unsuspecting world, and the dangers of taking it too far, all in the name of justice and so-called “leveling the playing field.”
We meet Det. Remy in a place where he has somewhat successfully put past trauma behind him, and his professional success and private relationships have grown since Book 1. Things look good, until they don’t. Be prepared as he and his team embark on a wild ride chasing down a deadly group of bad actors led by his archnemesis, L'Inconnu, who stir up a hornet's nest without realizing the full extent of the damage they have ability to cause. Wielding a power that can bring centers of commerce and government to their knees, L’Inconnu justifies the infliction of havoc on the masses according to a morally ambiguous code and a purpose Det. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
At the beginning all the chapters kind of felt like numerous short stories, because there were new characters and parts of their stories introduced in each chapter. I loved this. It really moves things along and is a very intriguing and smart way to fit in a lot of information while keeping the story interesting.
I love a good villain and L'Inconnu is exactly that. The characters and the storyline are complex and smart. The suspense is intense. I really enjoyed how the ending wrapped up the series, although I know I'll miss these characters.

I mean, sure, the allegations of him consorting with underage girls at various strip clubs are true, but he knows how to play this game; he’s been playing it for a very long time. Except this time, he’s not the one controlling the game.
After delivering a prepared statement to the ravenous DC press, he boards a plane for a return trip to his home state of Georgia—executive class, of course. He’s also still struggling with the post-traumatic stress of nearly being drowned by one of the most ruthless and diabolical assassins he’s ever met, the enigmatic L’Inconnu. After barely surviving their encounter on an ill-fated luxury cruise ship, he cannot completely put her out of mind. She’s already returned once to toy with Remy and keeping him on his toes is a game she truly enjoys. With elements of their latest encounter still unresolved, Remy knows it’s not a matter of if she’ll return…only when.
When the FBI reaches out with a surprising connection to Senator Hollister’s doomed flight, Remy finds himself pulled right back into the game, racing a clock while a body count of seemingly unrelated victims grows. Utilizing every departmental resource at his disposal, he’s always at least one step behind a diabolical nemesis whose ultimate agenda is anything but clear.
After a literally explosive prologue, Grylles keeps tension high as he rotates through his cast of well-drawn characters in subsequent chapters, slowly weaving their disparate paths together until they finally coalesce, revealing L’Inconnu’s ultimate, terrifying goal and its far-reaching implications. I’d say more, but I’m afraid she’s listening…
Third entry in Grylles’ highly entertaining series is intricately plotted, complex, and features an ending that is genuinely satisfying. My only real complaint is that the final draft felt more rushed into production than prior entries, which have been darn near flawless. There were just enough typos that made it through final proofing to notice, but in all fairness, I’ve spotted a couple in my latest traditionally published read that only confirms editing truly IS forever. I’m fairly certain, though, that short of donning a wig, taking someone’s hair from chestnut brown to honey blonde takes a lot longer than a half hour. All of this combined is what prompted the half-star ding, but it wasn’t enough to stop me from being thoroughly swept up in an otherwise engaging ride. On platforms that don’t deal in half-stars, my review will be rounded up to five stars.
I’ll be interested to dive into the next three books in the series, collectively subtitled “Renegade Force,” which feature a younger version of Remy Ferguson and how he earned his reputation as one of Miami-Dade’s finest.

Why, because it comes to light that Ferguson’s old adversary, L’Inconnu is somehow involved and the disaster is much more than a simple terrorist attack. The plot becomes even more baffling when we learn that primarily two software hacker groups are involved in manipulating computer software for illegal activity, primarily ransomware. Although the hacker’s real names are not revealed to each other, their hacker tag names become unique and meaningful to each hacker.
Dan Grylles does a masterful job of weaving a complex, suspenseful, thriller that will keep the reader glued to every page. The beginning chapters introduce us to the array of various character personas and individual uniqueness, and the extent of their involvement. I thought the story had a fascinating plot with an array of captivating characters. The interpersonal relationships were well-developed and intriguing. The story was highly suspenseful, with twists and turns around each page. What made this book scary was the scenario of potential real-life events that could easily become a reality with today’s computer hackers becoming more sophisticated. I would recommend this book as a high-tech thriller and am looking forward to reading more of Dan Grylles’, Remington Ferguson books.

Mass Infliction, #3 - Interesting and intriguing, although the start was slow. Once the story picked up it was immersing with good story lines, plenty of misdirection (some obvious), and some surprises. Not as good as Innocence Lost, but still a good read. 4*
Dragging Down, #0 - A simplistic, quickly read novella introducing Ferguson with an interesting twist in a case he is investigating. Source: BookSprout. 4*
Mystery of L'Inconnu, #1 - A more indepth killing spree. It drug on in the beginning but became more interesting as the story unfolded. Good story lines with a variety of characters, and plenty of misdirection to keep my interest. A bit wordy but a still entertaining. This was a fitting ending to the story arc involving L'Inconnu. And the main storyline for this book could easily be ripped from the headlines. As we become more and more dependent on computers, there is more chance for things to be ground to a halt by hackers or by companies sending out a system upgrade that is incorrect.
I love Remy's tenacity in continuing to follow the clues in a case until there is a resolution and how he has his own personal challenges. There were a number of characters we were introduced to at the start of the story but then the action started to pick up and the various parts of the puzzle began to make sense. Some of the twists were a little predictable (come on, how can everything be a surprise) but then there were some elements I wasn't expecting. I'm looking forward to seeing what is in store for Remy next.

Overall thoughts - Did Dan Grylles capture my attention in Mass Infliction to keep me reading until the end? Yes. Grylles has crafted a novel that is believable and enjoyable and at times keeps me on the edge of my seat.
Plot - Initially the plot is so complex it can feel a little disjointed. Grylles successfully entwines the multiple threads into a cohesive ending with a surprise twist. That is a great skill and Grylles does that well.
Characters- Mass Infliction has many characters and if I had one criticism, it was more focus on secondary characters to the detriment of the main character. I would have liked more focus on the main character, Remy Ferguson. However, Grylles is still able to capture my imagination.
Conclusion - Mass Infliction is an excellent read and I look forward to reading more from Dan Grylles. Well done, Dan!

So many moving parts, but Dan Grylles works the characters to create a perfect symphony. Those who have read the first two books of the trilogy will remember the main characters and meet a host of new ones. While Remy is still looking for his nemesis, L'cannou, he now has the support of the FBI. L'cannou also has a bigger support staff, but they seem to by disappearing throughout the story. Lots of hacking, AI and good guys gone bad, then good again. This is the kind of story that sometimes, you don't know who to root for. A very satisfying read and ending of the trilogy, I am wondering about the future for Detective Remington Ferguson and if he will come back in a new series.

When a plane with a Senator on board crashes into the ocean, the FBI confiscates the black boxes. Something on the boxes caused an FBI agent to contact NTSB Inspector Pearson and inform him he needed to call Det. Ferguson. And so, it begins. This story is full of action, ending with a vacation for the Detective. Very highly recommended.

This ending broke my heart. The book was so dang good but the ending got me. I never saw that one coming. And another part of the ending makes me wonder who is still out there. There's more to this mystery. I'm definitely ready for another book!.

Mass Infliction is a suspenseful psychological thriller focusing on Detective Remy as he searches for his nemesis, L'Inconnu following the downing of a passenger airliner. This well written and intense book involves cyberterrorism, mystery, action, plot twists, and a memorable ending.

Dan Grylles is adept at building suspension right from the first page. Can't put it down -- well, when I have to set it aside, the story lingers in my mind, pulling me back!

Like the first book there were way too many characters keep track of; not to mention all the locations. Kind of slow at first drug along, but picked up near the end.

I congratulate the author for having and creating the idea behind the Mass Infliction! In the digital world we live in, I hope those who know how to do this form of programming, don't read the book!

When I first started reading I will admit I was confused. It seemed like a lot of short stories. If you can hang in there and continue, you will experience evil at the highest level! The subtle climb to get to the base and then the climax of this, is well versed. To think that something like these events are really not out of the realm of possibility is truly frightening. A keeper.
