Sinners Book 2.5

Miki St. John’s life has been turned upside down, but it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him.

His best friend, Damien Mitchell, is back from the dead. He has a dog named Dude. And more importantly, he and his lover, SFPD Inspector Kane Morgan, now share Miki’s converted warehouse.

For the first time ever, Miki’s living a happy and normal-ish life, but when Valentine’s Day rolls around, Miki realizes he knows next to nothing about being domestic or domesticated. Nothing about the traditional lover’s holiday makes sense to him, but Miki wants to give Kane a Valentine’s Day the man will never forget.

Can he pull off a day of wine and roses? Or will his screwed-up childhood come back and bite Miki in the ass?

3.3 - Pretty nice and sweet. It made me sigh with "love them all" pleasure

Book #2.5

A cute short novella addition (a 1:30 hrs audiobook) narrated in an unforgettable style by Tristan James once again. ~ This M/M series ("Sinners") by Rhys Ford, is the tale about the surviving members from the rock band Sinner's Gin, their (Irish) manly sexy alpha lovers and the big wonderful Morgan family. Set in San Francisco, US. (My reviews:

As I just wrote on Sofia's update: Sweet and nice with some lovely Daddy Donal moments, I liked those. - As well as the start with the best buddies talk between Miki and Damien.

I LIKE - yap! ...sweet enough

Here I am...still in that happy place...

So this was my original review...
This was a wonderful, but short Valentine's story in the world of Sinner's Gin. It was sweet, sexy and filled with romance. A very enjoyable interlude with these men. I look forward to reading more from this author soon.
I know it's short and sweet...well then it matched the story didn't it?

I'm not changing that except to say that this was every bit as enjoyable on audio and I'm still over the moon in love with all of these amazing characters. So read the books or listen to the audio it matters not the experience is awesome and the stories are so worth it.

Ok, I'm done now...because next it's Connor's story and "sighs happily" he is the alphaest of the alpha for me. Have a happy Sunday and wherever you are and whatever you're reading, enjoy!

Update: August, 2018 just another go round on a series I love nothing new here...love the series and still thinking that MC + TJ = Karen's happy place.

I love Miki and Kane together!! This was a sweet novella about Miki's and Kane's first Valentine's day...

Miki is stressing out in getting a gift for Kane.

"Isn't that the point of fucking a guy? That we don't have to do that kind of shit?"

It was sweet and funny and also great to meet the "Morgan's" again.. Love Donal, Kane's dad!

I love Rhys Ford's "Sinners" series, which is curious because I actually don't like books about musicians typically. But if you've read "Sinners Gin" or "Whiskey & Wry", you'll find that the characters are imperfect, broken, grouchy, emotionally closed, fight love all the way...and yet, you care...and yet, you hope...and yet, you get your happy ending.

The Devil's Brew is a novella that takes place after Whiskey & Wry but features mostly Miki from Sinner's Gin. He's trying to do something nice for his lover Kane for Valentine's Day. Now, if you've met Miki, you'd wonder WHY he'd want to do this...and you'd devour this novella to see HOW he fares. Miki doesn't do the flowers and chocolates thang. So you know you're in for a ride...and it will be bumpy...

I love Miki. The kid is insecure and you can almost taste how scared he is to fail. Yet, he's so completely himself and doesn't know how to be anyone else. He is a GREAT character to sink your teeth into. And I always love Kane...the guy is a solid rock and he loves Miki for who he is. So getting more story of the two of them felt like a treat. Add in some Damien parts, a tiny bit of Sionn, and a good bit of Donal (the dad, who I love!)...and though only a novella, the story felt FULL.

Now...as a real bonus...this little novella is HOT! Gah! I was reading this on a plane (note to all: do not read this on a plane) and the intimacy between Kane and Miki...holy freaking smoking HOT! I was dying! I may have reread a few of those pages (it was a long flight). Worth the seat squirming and the blushing...for sure!

This does not work as a standalone and needs to be read in order of the series. So if you haven't started this series yet, you really should! It has a dark edge to it, but some silly laughs, and a lot of smexy...and GREAT characters throughout. Enjoy!

It's Valentine's Day and Miki is freaking out about his gift for Kane. "Isn't that the point of fucking a guy? That we don't have to do that kind of shit?" Well, not according to Damien, and now Miki's worried his gift isn't romantic enough or special enough. He's so stressed, he even gets help from Kane's dad, Donal.

This was sweet, funny, sexy and a little heart wrenching. I love these guys and if you're a fan of the series, this is a must read.

Okay so for a Valentine's Day novella, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for a little "happier" read. I love Kane but Miki just brought me down. I didn't expect him to be so sad and negative about things at this point. I understand him being a little reserved still given his background and all. But Kane has done nothing but prove time and again that Miki is HIS and he wants no one else. He loves him the way he is. I just didn't get all the unsureness and doubts from Miki. I hope in future books we see him grown and improve.

Swoon worthy and funny.

This is a really nice short to catch up with Miki and Kane. There's a lot of ground covered emotion wise on Miki's part. He really doesn't let you get away with easy; it's roller coaster all the way!

Ever have one of those times when you feel like everyone else got the script but you. Miki's having one of those and he's desperate to figure out how to not screw it up. He wants it, wants Kane so hard.

Funny, thing is… he was perfectly right all along. Just like Donal said.

For a short story this is great. Nice details and depth so that I felt like I got something whole, real and able to sink my teeth into. So in a short space I got teary eyed twice, laughed out loud three times and got so hot and bothered that I forgot to count.

audible edition, Tristan James is ssoooooo perfect for this series.

I just love Mikki and his attitude. The presents they gave each other were perfect, aawwwwww.
Of course Dude his usual self, I love that dog. Kane and Mikki are burning the pages hot in this

And then of course, my fave, Donal Morgan.. he is the perfect father, the bond he and Mikki have is so special.

Tristan James captures Miki so well (all the characters really) but I love his Miki.

Such a sweet and lovey moment between Miki and Cain. I love when Miki is all flustered and grumpy. We should all be so lucky to have a Donal in our lives.

I've really missed the guys. All of them. Miki, Damien, Kane, Sionn, and the entire Morgan clan. So, getting this short story was a gift that I really treasured. Plus, it's constantly heartbreaking to see Miki doubt himself in every arena except songwriting, and I always want to reach into the story and comfort him in some way which wouldn't terrify him. No hugging. That's still a little too scary coming from Brigid. *grins* Miki is somewhat domesticated now with Damien's return, Dude, and his life with Kane. But, when Valentine's Day rolls around, Miki is reminded that he still doesn't fit into what most would consider normal. It is time for Miki to put on his big boy britches and give it a try.

Thank goodness for Donal (gawd I love that man) and his steady, calm words which always soothe Miki. It helps for Miki to get that reassurance that he deserves to be loved, he is loved, and he's worth everything, and then some. Donal has a way about him and his presence soothes Miki, which made the gift giving for Kane ever so much easier. All in all, regardless of how ridiculous it makes Miki feel, he does great at his first Valentine's and I loved seeing Kane and him together.

I'd ask the author for more, but Rhys Ford would give me “the look” and grumble, so I have to be content with this short story in the series. Doesn't mean I'm not always sincerely happy and thrilled with more.

I loved The Devil's Brew. Absolutely loved it. It was a nice quick read that left me wanting to reread the first two books in the Sinners series. And I think I might just do that... maybe.

Anyway, this short was basically all about Miki trying to do something nice for Kane, his boyfriend. But he has a lot of stuff going on in his head and it's making him doubt not only himself, but the present he bought for Kane too. And while he was struggling with everything, I felt really bad for him because you could really feel how insecure he was and how he really needed someone to talk to.

So who did he call when he needed help? Kane's father, Donal (YAY!). I absolutely adore Donal and I really hope we see more of him in the rest of the books. Donal is probably my favorite character in the entire series and the scene with Miki was really heartwarming and it left me with a smile on my face. He's such an awesome dad and he always makes me want more scenes with him. Plus I love the fact he's pretty much adopted Miki as his son too.

The scenes between Miki and Kane were also awesome. I honestly adore the couple and I think they're perfect together. And Kane's reaction to the present was perfect! This is definitely a must read for fans of the series.

A lovely addition to the Sinner's Series.

Miki's prickles are in full evidence, the friendship between him and Damie and love between him and Kane. I loved the awkwardness, the things not going to plan and how the love and acceptance between them seems as natural as breathing.

Everyone needs a Donal in their life, where do I find one?
The moment between him and Miki had my heart weeping, though not without a few giggles bursting free.

It's a nice glimpse of them settling into each others lives, things will never be boring.

--

Audio is by Tristan James who rises to the challenge of the multiple accents, they only slip occasionally ;) did notice a few wrong words though - a can became can't, a hadn't became had and valentine roses were suddenly blue-hued. Minor hiccups that didn't stop me listening.

Rainbow Gold Reviews received this ARC in exchange for our honest opinion.

It is no shock to me how much I loved this book. I have been hooked on Kane and Miki from the very beginning of Sinner's Gin. This short sweet valentines story lets us visit with Kane and Miki, we also get a little Damie and Sionn and for good measure she throws in Donal.

I was impressed at how in-depth of a story it is considering the length of it. But then again Rhys Ford seems to do that to me with all her stories. She pulls you in from the very beginning and won't let you go till the very last word. When I read this I felt like I was a part of the story and watching them first hand. And oh man this just makes me want Tequila Mockingbird all that much more.

Once again a wonderful read from Rhys Ford, thank you for allowing us to read and review it.

Holy hell... wow, no one writes a sex scene quite like Rhys Ford, and no one can read 'em like Tristan James.

Four stars for the story but five huge 'oh my god' stars for TJ.

Kind of a sweet and sappy story about Valentines Day and the guys giving each other gifts. The ending scene is crazy and I'm not sure how TJ was able to read it without cracking up a little - but that is a huge part of why I love him, the way he delivers everything so seriously. Damn he's good.

Bottom line? Don't read it, listen to it, just... yeah.

This was adorable and yet it was also a tad melancholy with Miki and his vulnerabilities but they were honest and broke my heart.

Miki and Kane are so good together. I loved the gifts they gave one another. I loved how my Patriarch crush was there and how he is with Miki. Just amazing.

Damien and Sionn are over the top with the gifts but still swoony so I am okay with all that and a big bow.

Also, Dude being a brat was hilarious as always.

A nice short with full on romance that made me smile.

That was just so damn sweet! I loved it. There's actually a bit more tangible angst in this one than the previous books. The conversations that happen between Miki and Damien, Miki and Donal and, finally, Miki and Kane really bring home just how out of his element Miki really is. A first Valentines Day and Miki is not confident in what he got Kane. He does amazingly well, though. The boy should give himself some credit.

Short and Sweet.

This made me understand Miki more and the way he approached things. I also found it endearing the way he fretted ove his gifts which of course turned out to be perfect.

O and have I said how much I love Donal Morgan? He’s so far my favourite book father ever. Love it!

I think the first thing that comes to mind about this short, sweet and hot addition to the Sinners series is "Awwwwwww!!!!"

And when you see it's all about Valentines day, you'll realise exactly why! It's centred mainly around Miki St John and Kane Morgan, but there's a bit of Damie and Sionn time thrown in too plus a really warm and fuzzy moment for Miki with Kane's lovely, warm, caring dad Donal (LOVE that man) and of course some fun 'Dude' doggie antics too. Think...sparkly decorations...and glue! *snort* That had me grinning!

If I'm being truly honest, you really do need to have read the previous books 'Sinners Gin' and 'Whiskey & Rhy' to fully appreciate some of what's discussed between the guys, especially the talk that Miki and Damien have together at the beginning of the story, because that conversation between them is a pretty emotional interlude and unless you know whats happened to them both in the past it won't have the same emotional impact on you as it probably would have if you'd read the first two in the series. Plus there are passing references about two characters from book one, who were integral in the crime/mystery side of Miki and Kane's romance... but even so, its still a really engaging short read that has some pretty hot but still very romantic scenes that will satisfy any m/m fan. Let's put it this way, if you do decide to read this out of sequence, you'll definitely end up wanting to look up the first two in the series and if you do, you won't be disappointed.

Considering its only a shortish novella I never felt short changed because there's a fair bit packed in and the love scenes are yum! **big fuzzy sigh** Especially the final one when Miki and Kane are finally exchanging their valentine gifts. Made all the more tasty because the whole thing is based on Miki's apprehension about what to get the man he's crazy about for valentines day, especially after seeing the extravagant gifts that Damie and Sionn end up giving each other! Being Micki, he's having major doubts about what he's chosen and is stressing over it, like only he would! But of course he really doesn't need to, in the end the boy does good, but deep down its not really about him worrying about gifts, its about him still doubting himself. Never really believing he's worthy of the love and support he's getting from this gorgeous cop, who adores him... and Kane's close, loving Irish family who have taken Miki into their fold, accepting him and loving him the way he's never experienced before outside of his relationship with the guys from 'Sinners Gin', which of course was devastated by the accident that he thought had killed Damien and their two other band members, Dave and Johnny. See.... you really have to start reading this series if you've never met these guys before... Just sayin'! *wink*

There's no doubt in this, our emotionally damaged Miki gets to see just how much he's loved and that's why I think I "Awwwwwwwed" so much while I was reading it. Its a while since I read the first one and I'd forgotten just how much shit he'd gone through to make him so emotionally conflicted, granted things are better now he's with Kane but being in a 'normal' relationship still isn't easy for him, and it reminded me just why Kane is so good for him. We should be so lucky to have a guy like that in our lives!

'Miki lost any sense of Kane's words as he spilled into Gaelic, a rush of music and sound the Morgan family called their native tongue. Most of it whispered past him, a rolling song, but he caught a few of the more familiar words—love, god, honey, and most of all, treasured heart.

All spoken for Miki'

Then there's some other things mentioned that look like they might be hints as to what could be introduced further into the series and if that's the case then its looking REALLY good. Rhys Ford sure knows just how to get our mouths watering with these guys...

All in all, this was short but it was also fun, sexy, sweet, hot and more than a little bit poignant too! Wait till you read the swoon worthy love letter from Kane to Miki. OMG! That really pushed my 'romantic' button. Loved that. It was a great read, so much so that I think I'm going to have to find time to go back and read how it all started again...and whoop!!! Now its countdown for book #3, Tequila Mockingbird, so its not long before were all going to be 'sinning' some more! Can't wait!

First off I should start with mentioning I am a big fan of this series. I have a soft spot for Miki and I love MiKa so to speak, so when I found out there wasn’t only a 3rd part coming but also a little novella in between, I jumped on the opportunity to read this one.

And I wasn’t disappointed.

This novella fills a nice little gap in how Miki’s mind works and it gives you some insight on how he handles and sees things and explains how he processes things.

From the beginning where we have some solid bonding between Damian and Miki and some talk I suppose that lays the boundary for Sinners #3.

Till the end where we share in the love these men (Miki & Kane) portray, we get a wonderful update on their life, how they are doing and how things are working out together with some amazingly hot (yet sweet) loving ala Rhys Ford style.

The little extra with Damian and Sionn shows how they seem to be doing works out nicely. It also emphasizes that they are both totally different couples while also showing the reader that together the foursome just works out with the way they are living and the connection that especially Miki and Damian share.

Personally I would like to mention the star of this story is Donal.

He waltzes in and sweeps you of your feet he comforts the damaged soul of both Miki as well as that of some readers (I tend to think so), confirming there is unbiased love in this world and complete acceptance and fills a hole in Miki’s heart along the way.

Author Rhys Ford sure know how to put a lot in a little story. She manages to point out and discuss different issues in this 70 pages read.

From how Miki’s mind tends to work to showing the solid strong relationship Miki and Kane worked out for themselves and the love between “Brothers of the heart” Miki and Damian.

In the meantime we are given a glimpse of what could be coming next while making sure the readers also see how Damian & Sionn’s relationship is there solid and strong too.

She also shows us readers about love and acceptance that doesn’t come from blood but from pure love.

Add to that some hot juicy loving and you are in for a wonderful treat that is called “The Devil’s Brew”.

This reader/ reviewer made sure to reserve a spot for sinners #3 in her agenda! Is it June yet ;)

Sinner's Gin was my first Rhys Ford book. I have since read almost everything she has put out so far. Miki and Kane will forever be my favorite characters of hers. In The Devil's Brew it is Valentine's Day and Miki is having a hard time doing the romance thing. His self esteem is bad on a good day but the holiday adds to his feelings of not being good enough. With help from best friend Damien, he gives Kane a Valentine's Day he won't soon forget.

I absolutely love reading about these guys and I end each book eagerly awaiting more. I can't wait for the release of Tequila Mockingbird.

It's Valentine's Day and when Damien drags Miki along to a jewelry store to pick out a gift for Sionn, Miki begins freaking out about his gift for Kane.

Those of us who have enjoyed the series so far know Miki is a bit...broken. Seeing him freak out about whether or not he's gotten the perfect gift for Kane is both heartbreaking, and a little funny. When he calls in Donal, Kane's Da, for reinforcement...well, I just melted.

Tristan James once again narrates the story brilliantly. He captures Miki's belligerence and vulnerability, Kane's unconditional love, and Donal's fatherly advice and care so perfectly.

A short, sexy, and wonderful novella addition narrated impeccably by Tristan James once again.

RECOMMENDED!

The characters in this series are extraordinary. There isn't much special about each individual but when the author mixes them together there is a beautiful dynamic formed. Donal is the father that everyone wants. He's the perfect blend of friend and Dad. Miki and Kane are perfect together. They complete each other even when they are arguing. The entire series is one wild emotional ride that is totally character driven.

This was absolutely fantastic. It only had one flaw, it was way too short!

This story has Miki trying to do the Valentine's thing, but he feels he has no clue how to celebrate it, or what to buy. He just knows he is going to screw everything up. Dami and Donal, Kane's Dad, help Miki through his ordeal. Along the way he learns more about love, which is appropriate for this story.

There is much love and side splitting humor. I give this a candle lit room full of stars.

Audiobook review

Miki and Valentine's Day. What could possibly go wrong? Well a few things to be honest. To start he needs to realise that not only het people celebrate this day, gay people does too ;) Then there are the gifts, buying of them and probably worse - wrapping the gifts. Now that is what I call a challenge!

For such a short book it sure does pack a punch. While reading/listening we go through a wide range of emotions. We laugh at the antics and goofing around and the sheer cluelessness of Miki at certain times. Our hearts break for Miki and Damien and their past. Our hearts mend again when Donal comes around for one of his talks. And if that wasn't enough, we do get some sexy times as well.

It's a rare talent when an author can give us so much in so few words. Short stories have a tendency (for me at least) to fall flat, to feel incomplete and unfinished. Not with Rhys Ford. Her shorts are these wonderful snippets that you just can't get enough of. Sure this book probably wouldn't have been as good if you haven't read the first two books, but it could stand on its own just fine, but why should it when the other books are so good?

I find it interesting that I can both like and dislike the same narrator. You might know that I liked him narrating the first book in this series, but I didn't enjoy his narration of the second book. I can happily say that I enjoyed listening to him narrating this one. He has some great voices for our characters and it didn't feel so monotone as the last one. So all in all, it was a good hour and a half spent listening to Miki's first Valentine.

This was just such as great interlude for Miki and the rest of them and I just can't wait to get to the rest of the series.
