The (possibly last) job: Spy on a college professor. How hard can it be?
Larissa Donovan has one of the most interesting jobs in the world: travel to new locations, take in the sights, meet the locals, and sometimes kill them. Foreign or domestic? Depends on who's signing her paycheck. Such is the life when you're The Asset, the country's most elite intelligence operative. After twenty years of murder and secrets, however, Larissa is considering retirement. She agrees to one (maybe, okay probably) last job for the FBI: go undercover and gain intel on a college professor with ties to the same mobster responsible for her parents' brutal murders. From the time she arrives on campus, the seemingly simple spy mission is fraught with unanswered questions and countless complications. How is a college professor connected to a mobster? Who's responsible for the mysterious phone calls and threatening packages delivered to the office? And why can't she stop thinking about the professor's sultry voice and devilish grin?
As Larissa digs deeper, she finds herself tangled in a web of dangerous secrets and lies. When one of those secrets leads back to her family, she learns there's more to father and her parents' deaths than she ever imagined.
The Asset is the first book in the Asset series. The book ends on a mild cliffhanger and adult content intended for those over 18.
The protagonist of this mafia romance was very likeable. She's tough, funny, and smart, and her allies are great characters as well. The twist and turns/action and adventure plot created a real page turner! Plus, the writing itself was very well crafted. The capital S Spice *was* a little much for this gentle lady lover. This book is a winner for women who enjoy a little tension in the bedroom, but for me, the leading man was too pushy and aggressive. I would have liked to see more of the personality that made her like him so much and less of the rough sex. Of course, she is the Asset, so maybe her tough personality needs that tough match! Overall, a very fun read! I recommend this book for anyone looking for a fun mafia crime romance with some serious spice!
Fast paced, good flow, great tension and chemistry, action packed, badass FMC, alluring mystery and overall great plot. I immediately got the next book on the Kindle ready to continue the story.
I especially loved how the hidden identity trope played out.
Minus 1 star for some minor plot holes and some choppy characterisations but that did not stop me from enjoying this book.
Good mafia/espionage story, strong FMC, I need to know more about the MMC, but since this book ends on a cliffhanger and many doubts I know I'll find out as soon as the next one comes out and I read it at lightning speed. Good read.
Meh. Characters are all over the place. Just barely hits the surface. The last two chapters were the best part and the only chapters that made sense. The plot and where it was ending has a lot of potential.
This was so bad I’m reevaluating my book standards in general. Got it as a ‘stuff your kindle day’ freebie, though, so I did this myself.
This could have been on Wattpad. The writing is not good. Maybe it’s just me but the use of the word ‘however’ felt noticeably forced and out of place throughout the whole book. I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes at it.
The main character is presented as strong-willed and can be actually compelling but becomes insanely inconsistent whenever romance enters or needs to move forward. Which is really annoying and makes her seem stupid instead of calculated.
Caleb is a creepy teacher borderline forcibly trying to sleep with his student from day one despite her repeatedly setting firm boundaries. His moodswings and behaviour in general are down right abusive when the author clearly aims for it to be hot.
When it comes to ‘romance’ it reminds me of ‘Twisted Love’ which don’t even get me started on, I hate it and will die on that hill. Likeeee maybe don’t glorify unhealthy obsession and violence??
