I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book at first, but I ended up enjoying it. I wasn’t super familiar with the King Thrushbeard story, which was kind of nice because I had nothing to compare it to and this book felt like it’s own story.
The first chapter is them as children and it felt very middle-grade-ish then, but as the book progressed you see some much-needed character development and lessons learned by our main couple.
Marc was cocky. Which you know, fits for the retelling, but I didn’t like him much at first because of it. Though, he starts being a love sicken fool for her and I did quite like those parts! I always find it funny when we switch point of view of the main couple and they’re thinking completely opposite things about the other. This book had a few of those scenes that made me smirk every time.
I did struggle at times staying interested in this book’s plot, but I think that was just me because the ending kept my attention, and I was curious to see what the conclusion to the plot would be!
While I’m not typically one for marriage of convenience stories, I did really like the message of letting go of hatred/bitterness and allowing Hope to enter into your heart. It was a sweet message and story overall!
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. *I received this book for free from the Author for this honest review.
I knew I was going to like this book the moment I heard it was a King Thrushbeard retelling, but I wasn't expecting to like it nearly as much as I did.
First of all, that opening scene...... WOW! Verity is gifted I love how she chose such an effective scene to show the main characters' motivations, relationships, misunderstandings, and goals and where they all came from. The scene was so powerful and emotional and I am IN AWE.
The characters...... I loved them!!!!!!!!! Aria and Marc both go through incredible character journeys and are so deliciously flawed, but discover that they can heal and find hope throughout the course of the book.
I love how Verity included the theme of finding hope and giving hope! I was blown away by the line that is repeated throughout the book various times about planting seeds of hope right where you are. I'd never heard it that way, and it just is such a beautiful way to phrase it and look at it.
Overall, this book BLEW ME AWAY!!!!!!! I loved the incredible characters, the themes, and the range of emotions this book put me through. This book is an AWE-INSPIRING debut by an author I can't wait to read more from!!!!!!
I received an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.
Ah, what a lovely fairy tale retelling! The themes of hope, faith, and love are so poignant and powerful. This is the perfect book to end the Hope Ever After series. I demand Thomis' and Casimir's stories now, by the way, please and thank you.
I loved this book so much! It was a beautiful story. I loved Arianna and Marc! Such a sweet, loving romance between them even when they were not agreeing. So much faith intertwined in the story. I would be reading and realize how the author was intertwining faith into their love and into the story. It was beautiful. I recommend this book to everyone. No bad language. Just a beautiful story.
Prepare for a wild ride of friends to enemies to marriage-of-convenience to lovers in the final instalment of the clean, multi-author Hope Ever After series of Fairytale retellings!
One night is all it takes to change a life forever. Princess Arianna of the House of Thrush knows this. When she was eight, her family, kingdom and life as she knew it went up in flames at the hand of her best friend's family. Then, when she is twenty-one, she completes her vows to the king—her best friend turned enemy—two minutes after midnight, setting off a reverse rags-to-riches tale as King Marc must forfeit the throne in accordance to an ancient law.
But the story is only beginning. A shady treaty with two equally shady neighboring nations is in the works and when Marc's twin, the newly crowned King Thomis, agrees to sign, Arianna and Marc know it needs to be stopped. But what can a crippled tanner and her newly dethroned husband—whom she hates—do to help?
Verity wove a beautiful tale of love, loss, betrayal, magic, redemption and forgiveness that has left me stunned! Her characters are three-dimentional and I was sad to leave them, though I know it is only temporary. Thomis and Marc had a strong bond of brotherhood, but they also had unique personalities that make them distinctly themselves. Marc is arrogant and blessed with the family's magical ability to read emotions through touch while Thomis is logical and more aware of how the world works realistically, rather than being enamoured with it.
Arianna harbored resentment and hatred for thirteen years, slowly making her more bitter towards the House of Simmins and Marc. I enjoyed watching her share the gift of her air magic with Marc as children and then struggle to hide it so that he doesn't recognize her. And the dancing scene was well-written and a recurring feature of my dreams!
Casimir, the gipsy boy of unknown origin, grows into a loyal friend and determined rebel who seeks vengeance against the Kingdom of Terram on D'argent's behalf.
Petir the physician offers counsel and advice, even when Arianna and Marc don't want to hear it and I can't wait to read his story!
Smiles the gelada was sweet and I would love to see more of him in the future.
Laelynn and Leonardo make an appearance again, serving as agents on both side of the light-dark divide. Laelynn has been a fixture throughout the series, appearing in several of the books while Leonardo seems to keep to DaLeena Taylor's world.
The King Thrushbeard story holds a dear place in Verity's heart—and mine as well (though for different reasons)—and she masterfully incorporated the lessons she was learning when the story was first introduced to her.
Marc's sudden abdication of the throne and transition into peasant life is a transition that he initially fights but eventually accepts as a stepping stone to grow into the king that the One Father created him to be. Meanwhile, Arianna struggles to surrender her hatred and desire for revenge as she learns that the only person she is hurting is herself.
I am thankful to Verity for trusting me with an ARC of her novella and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for her and her writing career.
The aptly titled A Last Hope is the final book in the Hope Ever After series. I received an ARC from the author, Verity Sandahl to read before its release date on July 17th. This book is a gender-bent retelling of "King Thrushbeard" and contains a unique take on the story in a fantasy setting. Like all the books in this series, proceeds on sales will go toward Operation Underground Railroad to help fight against child sex trafficking and protect children from exploitation. This book has more Christian messaging than the other Hope Ever After books I've read, but it was still enjoyable as someone from a different religious denomination. The story focuses heavily on star-crossed lovers, which is my favorite type of romance.
Princess Arianna hails from the Thrush kingdom whose royalty has the ability to fly. Prince Marc, from an enemy kingdom, is an empath, who can read people's emotions by touching them. When the two take an illicit flight as children, they form a deep bond that Arianna begrudgingly recognizes as soulmates. When Marc is unable to rescue her from an attack on her kingdom after their first encounter, she blames him and holds him responsible for the mutual violence and corruption of their monarchies for many years. As an adult, Arianna takes on a new identity as Aria, a peasant tanner, and draws the attention of Marc, who is now king. Though he recognizes her at first, she manages to convince him that she is a different person, but that doesn't stop him from falling in love with her all over again. He is happy to have her at his side even after his brother betrays him and takes away his crown.
This book cleverly weaves in elements of "King Thrushbeard" while telling an original story of the power of forgiveness. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was gender-bent because that is something I rarely see from this fairy tale. Allowing the male character to learn humility instead of a spoiled princess gives the story a new sense of perspective. Yet, the princess in this tale has an important lesson to learn as well, putting both characters on equal ground. The depth of Arianna's character is fascinating. On the outside, she hates Marc and blames him for everything that happened to her family, but deep down, she craves his love and secretly cares for him the same way he does for her. Ultimately, both characters would need to open their hearts to each other to save their kingdoms.
Although the romance between Arianna and Marc was the heart of this book, it also has a great supporting cast. Marc's brother, Thomis, is a calculating yet supportive prince with an agenda of his own and a secret ability that is revealed much later. Arianna's friend, Casimir, a rebel captive, motivates her to get close to Marc so she can rescue him. He is the leader of the rebellion to take back her kingdom, and many of her decisions throughout the book revolve around her desire to help him. When Marc learns of his alliance with Casimir, it causes him to question their marriage. It is his undying faith in her that saves everyone in the end.
A Last Hope by Verity Sandahl is a thrilling gender-bent adaptation of "King Thrushbeard" that masterfully weaves elements of forgiveness, humility, and love. With its unique fantasy setting, complex characters, and original storyline, this book is a must-read for fans of fairy tale retellings. The depth of the characters and the power of their love make this story unforgettable. I'm so glad I got to read this book, and I'm sure you will be too. Don't miss out on this thrilling conclusion to the Hope Ever After series, and remember that proceeds from this book will support a great cause - fighting against child sex trafficking and protecting children from exploitation.
A powerful and inspiring message. An engaging story.
A sweet beginning of childhood friendship between Prince Marc and Princess Arianna that was ripped away in an instant.
Princess Arianna lost everything in one night. Her father, her kingdom, her hope. She let anger, revenge, and hatred consume her.
Marc has grown up to be king. I was unsure of him in the beginning; he seemed selfish and carefree, but he immediately endeared himself to me when he showed his true colors when his life fell apart. He found joy in his lowly life as a tanner and brought joy and hope back to Arianna. He would love her through her hate and show her the One Father’s love. His faith, hope, and trust are in the One Father.
*** Some standout quotes that touched me:
"Seeds planted in hope grow mighty fruit - if the hope is in the right thing."
“Hope gave him eyes to see past his tenuous circumstances and the courage to recognize his calling.”
“The warmth is His love! She realized. The constant, joyful warmth she'd felt in Marc had been the One Father's love the whole time. Had He been drawing her, loving her through Marc, showing her what it felt like to be free?” ***
A powerful story full of love, loss, betrayal, anger, faith, hope, and forgiveness.
A beautiful journey of realization that we are undeserving of, yet freely given love and forgiveness by the One who created us and loves us no matter what.

I received a complimentary copy, but a positive review was not required.
I have never read nor seen (that I can recall) a King Thrushbeard retelling nor the original. I will definitely have to find the original now. This was such a good storyline. One I needed to read right now. It has such a beautiful way of not only leading the FMC to find hope and purpose in the pain she’s endured but the reader as well. It really touched my heart and brought me to tears.
Seeing Arianna’s pain and fear taking its toll on her and her relationships was heartbreaking. You can understand where she’s coming from, but also see she’s been blinded and made to believe lies. Like we so often are in our own hearts. I don’t want to leave spoilers so I’ll just say that watching her character progression was emotional and soul searching. The main characters were real and their emotions have a special way of becoming yours. I loved seeing their development and how they rise to the challenges set before them.
The twists in this story were so good. Verity Sandahl has such a great way of making you question everything both in plot and in emotional/spiritual underlying points. She will keep you on your toes wondering what will happen next. You’ll cry. You’ll bite your nails. You’ll laugh. All the feelings will hit you at some point. Have tissues, cozy blanket and cozy drink of your choice at the ready!
Overall, this was a beautiful read that I highly recommend especially if you’ve been struggling with having hope yourself. It’s a wonderful light in the darkness pointing to the One that’s greater than our troubles even if it feels like we’ve been forgotten in them.
A splendid retelling of a lesser-known fairytale. This story reverses the roles of the hero and heroine and plays out a skillfully embellished version of King Thrushbeard. I enjoyed the plot and pacing, I found it so easy to distinguish between the voices of all characters--the supporting cast is strong, each player distinctive--and the culmination was utterly satisfying. My main complaint is that this book should be longer; I would have loved for some scenes to be doubled or to be followed by further expanding scenes. It's not much of a complaint, though, as I understand the author will be revisiting this world in future books. So, if you like the tropes of grumpy/sunshine, destined soulmates, or enemies to lovers, but you like them spice-free, this is a read I can't recommend highly enough!
I Just finished Verity Sandahl's book! I had so much to do, but had a hard time putting it down. So many lessons in this book and times for reflection. I didn't know until the end of the book the reason for this series of 20 books. I am awed by the author and saddened over the reality of human trafficking. I hope many will take the time to read The Last Hope. What an appropriate title to both the book and the hope we can collectively help end human trafficking! Although mostly females would tend to enjoy this book, because of the fantasy and plot of kingdoms, I think boys would like this book as well. Appropriate for all.
Book: A Last Hope (Hope Ever After #20) Author: Verity Sandahl
I was so excited to support the Hope Ever After series once I heard that a portion of proceeds was going to OUR Rescue, an organization dedicated to stopping sex trafficking and child exploitation. Find out more at ourrescue.org.
Overall there will be about 20 books in the series, all based on different fairytales. I bought several but decided to read this one because I'd never heard of the fairytale it's based on, King Thrushbeard.
Overall, I did really enjoy the plot of this book. I'd have to say as far as the the enemies to lover trope goes, it's one of the best set ups I've seen. The way Marc relentlessly pursued Arianna with love and kindness was unique and an excellent representation of our father's love.
I ultimately gave the book 3 1/2 stars because even though I did enjoy the story, the editing and the flow was very jarring. I felt like chunks of information was missing at times and that the story was unclear and just didn't flow. I found myself flipping back pages to make sure I hadn't missed something. The last 25% of the book almost seemed like it was written by a completely different person, or missed the editing process entirely.
All in all I'd recommend this book and series. It supports a good cause and most of the titles are intriguing.
Loved this King Thrushbeard retelling! This is a fairytale I'm not as familiar with so I did look up the original about half way through. I enjoyed every moment of this book. Pacing was great. Characters felt real and there were even twists I didn't see coming! I would love to read Thomis's and Casimir's stories soon!
This book is an amazing story of how pain and bitterness can absolutely rule your life and how love and forgiveness has incredible healing powers. Thank you for illustrating God’s message of love and hope to everyone!! Such an encouraging a worth while story!!
*Slow burn, no spice romance without any explicit language*
I am very great full to have gotten a ARC copy of this book! This is the first book I have read of the series and greatly enjoyed it! The characters were well developed and it had a very good plot! I do wish the end was a little less rushed and more developed but overall I enjoyed the read!
Verity Sandahl’s A Last Hope is a captivating gender-bent retelling of King Thrushbeard, set in a richly imagined fantasy world. As the final installment in the Hope Ever After series, it brings the themes of hope, faith, and love to a poignant and powerful conclusion.
The story follows Princess Arianna and King Marc, rulers of kingdoms long at odds. Disguised as a lowly tanner named Aria, Arianna harbours a deep-seated grudge against Marc, believing his family responsible for her family’s downfall. Determined to take revenge, she marries him with the intention of stealing his throne. Marc, unaware of her true identity and motives, marries her to fulfil a law meant to preserve peace.
Sandahl’s storytelling is masterful, weaving familiar elements of King Thrushbeard into a fresh, compelling narrative full of twists and turns that caught me completely off guard. The characters are richly drawn and undergo remarkable growth. Arianna’s journey from bitterness to forgiveness is heartfelt and believable, showing how even the deepest wounds can be healed through hope and faith. Marc, initially arrogant and naive, grows into a humble and steadfast ruler whose quiet strength plays a crucial role in healing both their kingdoms and their hearts. Their dynamic — from childhood friends to wary strangers to true partners — is a joy to watch unfold.
The supporting cast adds richness and intrigue. Marc’s brother Thomis, Arianna’s friend Casimir, and the supportive Petir each have fascinating layers and secrets that deepen the stakes. I finished the book eager to read their stories in future instalments.
Beyond its romance and revenge plot, A Last Hope is a thoughtful exploration of humility, redemption, and the power of forgiveness. The Christian themes are woven in with sincerity and heart, enhancing rather than overpowering the narrative. The world-building is vivid, the pacing brisk yet emotionally resonant, and the surprises keep you turning the pages.
In conclusion, A Last Hope is a beautifully written, thrilling retelling that will delight fans of fairy tale adaptations and anyone who loves a story with emotional depth, strong character arcs, and an uplifting message. It’s a satisfying finale to the Hope Ever After series — and it left me eager for whatever comes next from Thomis, Casimir, and Petir’s perspectives in Sandahl’s other writing.
A Last Hope, by Verity Sandahl, is book 20 of the Last Hope Series. It is a beautifully written story of the King Thrushbeard fairy tale retelling, when hope becomes lost and anger and revenge take possession of your soul. Young Princess Arianna meets a prince named Marc, and they become best friends. One night, her father is killed, and she blames Marc's family. Arianna is then raised by rebel gypsies and later moves to a neighboring kingdom named Terram. She now runs a smelly tannery but continues working with the rebels. Marc becomes king of Terram and is forced to marry. He has missed Arianna all his life and sees someone who looks very much like her, but the name and the lady's eyes are different. Still, he would rather marry her than someone else. However, because Marc marries two minutes past midnight, he loses his kingdom, based on rules, and his brother now becomes king. Marc and his new wife move into her tannery, and he is confused as to why life has put him on this smelly path. But, as one person said to him, plant hope, even if it is just in the tannery. So, that is what Marc sets out to do; he learns the trade of a tanner and sets out to win his wife's heart. But this is now Aria's chance for revenge, and she and the rebels plot the kingdom's downfall. Does the kingdom fall? Will Aria ever love her husband? Is hope for the future impossible? What I really love are the Christian elements that make up the story. Marc puts his faith in the one true Father, no matter how bad life can be or how mean his wife is to him. And, as the story unfolds, Marc teaches her not to be afraid but to have hope. Arianna is then given a chance to continue her revenge and hatred or accept forgiveness, hope and love. When I finished this book, I truly felt joy and satisfaction in the ending. To forgive is to offer love, something that I wish we all had in abundance, and maybe this world would be a more joyful place to live. Although I received an ARC copy to review, these are my own comments, and I strongly recommend the purchase of this book. Proceeds will go to support O.U.R, an organization to help with human trafficking, but maybe this purchase will help the reader themselves learn hope and forgiveness, just as I did.
This Reversed King Thrushbeard Retelling was a deeply heartfelt tale of the power of forgiveness, humility & redemption. It has several lovely & unique elements that set it apart from other retellings!
🕊️Verity's heart for Jesus is lovingly laced throughout this story, as God is referenced frequently by the characters who have faith in a God who is bigger than their circumstances & who has the power to redeem them. As a christian, this was my favorite part of the retelling; that this story of King Thrushbeard ultimately pointed us to the King of Kings!
✨There were many conversations in this story that hinted at deeper spiritual truths, but these were a couple of my favorite moments:
“A single drink to a beggar, a hug for a child, a conversation with a lonely widow. Each opportunity the One Father gave and used.”
“Seeds planted in hope grow mighty fruit - if the hope is in the right thing.”
“Seeds are so small.”...“Because they are.”...“But our job is to plant them for the One Father gives the fruit, and His power is not small.”
🌦️Both Arianna & Marc underwent major character growth throughout this story.. It was so satisfying to watch them grow into who they were meant to be, and change for the better.. We meet Arianna as a carefree child, then watch as she grows into a young woman who is embittered by her harsh circumstances, bent on revenge & struggling with doubt that God even cares, let alone hears her prayers. So she's built an impenetrable wall around her heart, to keep herself safe from further betrayal, but Marc is determined to break down her barriers, much like another fairytale prince who braved the hedge of thorns surrounding the tower where his beloved needed him to wake her..The way he pursues her with genuine devotion despite her hatred for him reminded me a lot of the biblical story of Hosea & Gomer!
👑 This was such a refreshing read, it's uniqueness making it a shining jewel in the crown of fairytale retellings!
Thank you @veritysandahl for the honor of reading your book as an arc! I Loved it! 🌟✨🌟✨🌟
This is the first book I've read in the Hope Ever After series, with proceeds going to help fight human trafficking, but I will definitely be checking out some of the other books in this series.
While this story is, in essence, a King Thrushbeard retelling, it also comes across as a wholly original story. It goes so much deeper than the original Fairy Tale.
Princess Arianna and Prince Marc are fated soulmates. There's a grumpy/sunshine trope. The two met as children, but were separated when their two countries went to war against each other. Many years later, Marc becomes king and has established a tenuous peace, but he believes that Arianna had been killed in the fighting as a child.
What Arianna has actually been doing is living as a peasant, and working with rebel forces to rise up against Marc's kingdom, believing he betrayed her and left her to die. For years, she has been fuelled by hatred and bitterness.
When fate pushes them back together, this time as husband and wife (though she only married him as a strategic move to bring down his kingdom), their world is flipped as Marc is suddenly stripped of his crown and forced to move into Arianna's peasant world, working as a tanner (he doesn't know she is actually the princess he bonded with as a child). Still, with the advice of a wise counselor, Marc does his best to live up to his vows, trusting in a higher power to help him create a loving relationship with his hesitant wife, never dreaming the extent of her hatred towards him.
Can Arianna hold on to her hatred, or will love give her the hope she needs to start anew?
Verity Sandahl is a new author to me, but I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.
This book was a perfect finish to the Hope Ever After series. It was such an amazing and original retelling of King Thrushbeard and the characters were so relatable with their flaws and weaknesses. Arianna was such a great character who lost everything in one day and let the bitterness and hatred grow to a point where all she could think about was killing those responsible. Marc was also a great character who dedicated his life to bringing peace between the two countries. He did let his wealth and power go to his head and became arrogant, spending a lot of money. His marriage to Arianna helped both of them grow and become better people. Thomis, Marc's twin brother, was definitely my favourite character. He was the mastermind behind everything and managed to manipulate the situation to save the kingdom. The plot twist at the end was definitely surprising and I did not see it coming. I can't wait for Thomis to get his own book! The soul binding and the royal family gifts were welcome additions to the story. This book is definitely one of the best King Thrushbeard retellings I have ever read and Verity Sandahl did a great job with the characters, plot and worldbuilding. I can't wait to read whatever book Verity writes next!
This is a short and sweet story about hope and forgiveness. Prince Marc and Princess Arianna were best friends as kids. After tragedy strikes, Arianna loses everything and goes into hiding. Thirteen years later, Arianna is disguised as a lowly tanner named Aria. Blaming Marc and his family for everything she lost, she works with the rebels to take his family down. Marc is now king and must marry before his 21st birthday. Not knowing who she really is, he chooses Aria, and she agrees only so she can steal his throne. After losing his crown to his brother, Aria and Marc live at her tannery together. Marc spends his days trying to win Aria over and slowly, her walls come down. The slow burn of Marc and Aria's love is so sweet, and together, they unite their kingdoms. I have never read the story of The King Thrushbeard, so I am not sure how this retelling compares.
From the first page of this story I was absolutely hooked. I love how faith-filled this fairytale was and how you see the characters grow in love, forgiveness, and hope throughout the entire book. The plot twist at the end was amazing and I never saw it coming, but truthfully the entire book had me on the edge of my seat. I always wanted to know what was next and was not looking forward to the story ending at all! I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a beautiful story. What makes all of this even better is that the proceeds from each book in this series ( written by different authors ) are donated to the Operation Underground Rescue which helps rescue children from trafficking and exploitation.
I was at a bit of a disadvantage, not being familiar with the King Thrushbeard tale, so I will have to back up and read that, now that I’ve read the book. I know the author - we go to the same church - and I was surprised recently to find out that she’d been writing and publishing books.
In general, I really enjoyed this expanded fairy tale - it had very much of a fairy tale feel to it. The Christian themes were strong and well expressed without being heavy-handed. The main characters, Princess Arianna and Prince Marc, when they meet as 11-year-olds, become soul-entwined as a fulfillment of prophecy, but circumstances drive them apart. When they meet again years later, Marc has become king of his kingdom, believing Arianna to be dead. Arianna is in disguise, filled with bitterness and hatred toward him, viewing him as responsible for the defeat of her kingdom and the death of her father. The story takes us through the process of Marc being humbled and Arianna learning to be vulnerable and to forgive.
At the end, I discovered that this is part of a series of books that were written to benefit a group called Operation Underground Rescue that rescues children from exploitation and sex trafficking. Bravo!
A Last Hope was an inspiring retelling of King Thrushbeard. The story had strong Christian themes as it illustrates God’s love and forgiveness. This book had a powerful message of hope to overcome adversity. I loved the gender bent twist to this story. It was creative and components of the fairy tale were weaved into the story. There were many twists and turns that kept me engaged in the story. Marc appeared naive and spoiled at first, but he had good intentions. His sunshine demeanor was infectious. He grew as he learned humbleness and rolled with the hardballs life threw him. Arianna let bitterness over take her heart due to tragic events. She grew as she learned to hope again and to let go of that bitterness. The banter between the two was sweet and sassy. The romance was clean/closed door. This book was wonderful and looking forward to Thomas’s story!
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.
I enjoyed every page of 'A Last Hope', filled with suspense, great characters & all of our emotions, deep and light. You will even meet Smiles, the "overpriced" gelada. The book is thoughtful, profound, funny, adventurous, loving, joyful. Hope. For all the ages. Thank you Verity Sandahl for your wonderful book. The pages flew for me as fast as Arianna's "climbing the air".
This was a King Thrushbeard retelling like none that I have ever read. It is topsy-turvy as to who is the actual Thrushbeard character as both MCs struggle with pride, and both are royals. This was a very original retelling, with some major baddies, and I love how as the story progresses you see that heighten MCs parents were the sole King at fault, though both made terrible decisions that their children then had to atone for and forgive around.
I love the big revel, both big reveals…who are we kidding: the last 5 chapters were filled with reveal after reveal in the most amazing ways
A Last Hope is a wonderful King Thrushbeard retelling which has a lot of elements of the original fairytale, but is definitely it’s own unique story about how hope, love and forgiveness can even heal the strongest emotions like hate, revenge and bitterness.
While the roles are reversed and Marc is being the arrogant one, I loved that both characters had a strong character growth and that Marc, despite being flawed in his arrogance, stubbornness and naivete, was a very gentle and kind character from the beginning, loving his people and ultimately the one who showed Arianna that accepting God’s love and forgiveness and extending this mercy towards others - even your enemies - can truly change your heart.
Arianna is more than your usual grump. She is bitter and fueled by anger and the thought of revenge. I loved how her and Marc’s strong childhood friendship reemerged through their marriage, even though Marc was oblivious and Arianna fought hard to keep hating him. But Marc was - albeit kind of naive - a very thoughtful, sweet and caring husband. The romance was completely clean, their love story definitely based on an emotional - and fated soul - connection and I loved reading about how Marc was able to melt Arianna’s frozen heart.
I struggled a bit at first with the political background, maybe because of different names for the kingdoms or a lot of information, but I was definitely intrigued from the beginning and there were enough side characters and details to this fantasy world to make me want to read more stories which take place there. So I am very excited for Casimir’s coming story!
This book has a very clear Christian message and I think it’s a wonderful conclusion to the Hope Ever After series, with its strong focus on hope, love and faith.
* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.
This was a retelling of King Thrushbeard, and had layers upon layers of the original story woven into it! Clean, uplifting, and full of suspense and romance, I enjoyed every minute of this book!
Ummmmm, no. It's not bad, but it's really confusing. The main plot is obvious and I will admit to getting really mad at the characters for not figure it out.
