In the sequel to Train to Bellefontaine, MacKenna ("Mack") and Gertie have switched places. Gertie, a proper 1800s young lady, has been thrust against her will into a strange and scary modern world which seems like Hell itself. Mack, a feisty twenty-first century girl, is still stuck in the 1800s, having lost her only chance to time travel home. What's more, a false accusation has turned Mack's world upside-down. Mack and her beau, Alex, attempt to send a message that will last through the years, instructing Gertie how to time travel home. Will Gertie ever find and understand the message, or will she and Mack have to remain in the wrong centuries forever?
