From sunflowers to cacti to Venus flytraps, An Inventor Adventure: A Self-watering Journey by Selma Benkiran, is filled with vibrant and engaging illustrations and endearing universally-applicable themes.

As a lover of gardening, I immediately empathised with Lilo, who had identified a problem: Who would water his plants while on holiday?

His quest to water his plants while on holiday becomes a metaphor for the challenges we all face in life. His determination to create something functional while facing perfectionism, fear of failure, and feelings of overwhelm, all while parsing and handling others' opinions are matters that transcend any age. So how will Lilo find his answers?

This is more than a children's book. It's a treasure trove of wisdom wrapped in an enchanting narrative. Of course, I’m not the target audience, however, I was utterly charmed and felt very inspired after reading this.

My heartfelt thanks to Selma Benkiran for inviting me to read her book through NetGalley, as well as NetGalley and Mi Camino Publishing for the DRC.

In a Nutshell: An amazing picture book for older children that goes much beyond what the title promises. Informative and inspiring in all the right ways. Much recommended!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Young Lilo loves spending his summer vacations with his grandparents, but this year’s summer brings with it a special surprise: his parents are taking him on a month-long trip to the rainforest. Lilo is over the moon with joy, but his excitement soon peters out as he realises that there is no one to water his beloved plants when he goes on vacation. Taking advice from his friends as well the adults in his life, Lilo tries out some ways of creating a self-watering system. But every idea fails miserably. Lilo, however, is blessed to have some trustworthy adults around him, and with their ideas, he keeps working towards his goal. Will he succeed in creating a watering system for his plants?
While ‘inventor’ stories are fun to read, they always come packaged with a dollop of unrealism. Either the machines are too wacky or their outcome is over the top. I need to channel every little remnant of my inner child to read such stories with the right attitude without rolling my eyes at the absurdity of the proceedings.
Thankfully, I needed no such prep for this amazing book. Which is why I am going to begin with the negative feedback first – the ONLY point where I feel that the book could have done better: the title. While the current title represents the story, it doesn’t indicate the WHOLE of the story. This little tale is so much beyond a typical adventure story or an inventor story or even a ‘self-watering journey’ that the current title and tagline don’t do justice to it.
Other than this, all I have is positives and praise.
Here’s what I loved about this book:
🌹 Lilo’s character: Realistic all the way. I appreciate how he is depicted with genuine emotions, ranging from excitement to anger, joy to frustration.
🌹 Lilo’s willingness to take advice from not just his friends but also the adults in his life. So many books make children solve every single problem on their own. We need such books to make kids understand that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness.
🌹 The adult characters: Lilo’s parents and grandparents are so well represented! They are there for Lilo when he needs them, but they aren’t overprotective or interfering. They offer just as much help as required and then leave him to learn some more through trial and error. There’s a lesson herein for all adults as well.
🌹 The scientific knowhow, including some interesting tidbits about Lilo’s plants, the way in which water reaches plants, and how self-watering can work.
🌹 The affirmations that Lilo gathers every step of the way, learning from his mistakes and from the advice offered by the adults. I love how these life lessons are highlighted at the bottom of the right page in a special box.
🌹 The practical approach to problem solving: So simple that even a child can implement it! I am never a fan of self-help books because they always promote generalisations. This book, however, gets all the advice right. The life lessons are written in a way that speaks to kids but has much to teach adults as well.
🌹 The creative thinking depicted through the innovative ideas that Lilo tries for his self-watering plan.
🌹 The message about perfectionism vs. ‘good-enoughism’: Always a great lesson for everyone to learn!
🌹 Amazing use of the page space, with the text neatly arranged and with enough spacing in between lines. The writing makes use of highlights and coloured text for the key points.
🌹 The illustrations – Inclusive sketches coloured in soothing light pastels. Subtle enough to keep the focus on the content and precise enough to complement the text perfectly.
🌹 The parting note took me totally by surprise because until I saw it, I hadn’t noticed something special in the illustrations. Loved this Easter egg!
All in all, this picture book is an amazing combination of informative and inspiring. I loved almost everything it stands for. The medley of scientific approach and life lessons is a winner.
Strongly recommended. This would be a great addition to any home or classroom library, as its appeal is not restricted only to those who love plants and/or gardening. Because of the content and approach, this picture book would work best for kids aged 6+.
4.75 stars.
It kept me guessing, I loved this! 👨‍🌾🪴🚿
Lilo will have an epic summer adventure in the rainforest but what about his cherished plants his lovely Grandmother gave him? They'll die without water for a month so Lilo puts on his thinking cap to invent a self-watering system for his plants.
It's nice to see Lilo brainstorm different ideas with his friends. He also receives practical advice from his parents as well as encouragement to take a step at a time instead of rushing to the finish line with a perfect system. It's okay to take a break as you tweak your creation and don't give up!
Inventor Adventure: A self-watering journey is recommended for children 6 - 10 years of age. I enjoy guessing what his system will be like. Overall entertaining, educational, and creative. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful as well.
Thank you Selma Benkiran for inviting me to read her book through Netgalley. Also on Kindle Unlimited.
Selma Benkiran has penned a wonderful story featuring Lilo, a young boy whose family will soon be taking a month-long vacation. He usually spends his summers with his grandparents, but this time the family is going to the rainforest. Lilo soon recognizes that he needs to have his plants watered while they are gone.
I appreciate this book more than many children’s books because it hasn’t been too simplified. Lilo works to invent a watering system that will last a month. Along the way, he encounters several failures. However, he also learns from those failures. While this book is aimed at children of various ages, many adults can learn from it as well. The end of the book has a helpful summary of the lessons Lilo learned to reenforce them.
Overall, this is a well-written novel that teaches both science and life lessons. It would make for a great conversation between parents and children or in a classroom setting. Additionally, the illustrations are well-done. I highly recommend it.
How refreshing and rare to see a children’s book packed with so many clear and valuable self-confidence building lessons.
💡This book encourages independence, team work, creativity, exploration, resourcefulness and logical thinking for problem solving. It offers insight from mentors for things like: deciding what to do with other people’s advice, not giving up, learning things in stride, and understanding feelings during the process.
👏🏼 The illustrations and use of color helps break up the pages nicely, and having the lessons learned re-iterated at the bottom of the page makes it extremely clear so that the message doesn’t get lost.
🪴 Such a cute story and the fact that the MC is passionate about his plants is just adorable and inspiring. As a plant Mom to over 100 indoor plants, I might be taking some of my own lessons from Lilo. 😄
👦🏻 I plan to make my 9YO read this, I think every child needs to hear these encouraging messages multiple times.
Thanks to NetGalley, Mi Camino Publishing, and Selma Benkiran for going the extra mile to provide me with a complimentary ARC to review!
"An inspirational and educational read for children of all ages." ~nerdywordyreviews
When approaching children about scientific topics, sometimes it is difficult to get them to pay attention or learn because they find it "boring". Inventor Adventure: The Self-Watering Journey combines useful information with a fun, playful story, changing children's mindset. The book has wonderful illustrated pictures that capture the scenes accurately and help explain the science behind caring for plants.
Follow Lilo on his journey that grandma introduced to him. Learning how to grow and care for plants so that they thrive. With his family set to go on vacation, he faces a dilemma that there will be no one left home to care for his plants. Lilo has to come up with a solution. Throughout this book, he tries different self-watering ideas to find the right fit. Through his failures, this book introduces self-regulating techniques and analogies to walk him through his anger, upset, and frustration. In the end, a working solution doesn't just help his plants grow, the experiences also help his mind grow and thrive.
This book is well-written and has many coping strategies throughout, allowing the reader to know that it is okay to fail, but get back up and try again. It teaches that it is okay to feel emotional when things don't go your way. That it is okay to get frustrated and have a moment, but to never give up.
This book is a wonderful read for young children and parents to read together, or for older children to read themselves. It would be an excellent addition to any classroom, daycare, or library.
Anyone can be a scientist! You just have to learn how. In this case, our young hero identifies a problem (how can I water plants when I'm not around?) and then figures out the steps, with some trial and error and a little research, to achieve that goal.
I would highly recommend this for all young readers, because it's so vital to realize that science is something we can all take part in.
I found Inventor Adventure an enchanting and beautifully written & illustrated story offering a unique journey of a child’s self-development and scientific inquiry.
The book centres around Lilo, a young and inquisitive boy with an inventor’s mind and budding gardening skills. Ahead of a long summer holiday, Lilo is determined to invent a reliable self-watering system to keep his plant collection alive while away. The project proves challenging, both technically and personally but through self-discovery, support from wise loved-ones, and perseverance, Lilo develops grit, personal insights and life lessons that ultimately set him up for success.
We read this book with our children, aged 6 and 8 (with our 4 year old also expressing interest).
I found the book explores themes of self-development, nurturing curiosity, grit, perseverance, collaboration and even family love with exceptional insight and authenticity. The book introduces themes and tools to deal with personal and life challenges we all face through power metaphors and visuals.
The story weaves into this an age-appropriate introduction of the scientific method and critical thinking. Lilo identifies his problem (keeping his plants watered while away) then repeatedly researches solutions, develops a hypothesis of what might work, implements and tests his solutions and refines these until he invents a workable self-watering system.
Addition to the positive personal development and scientific themes the book introduces, I felt the story also helped my children reinforce their love of nature and gardening, of experimentation, learning, and researching. It wonderfully shines a light on the power of self-determination (“I am the captain aboard my ship”) and the power of positive thinking (“I water the thoughts that make me grow”).
The book concludes with a very helpful summary of Lilo’s learning journey of life and science lessons reinforces these themes for the child and directs the young learners for further worksheets and activities online.
Overall an inspiring and unique children’s book to read with our children that offers insights on how to overcome internal challenges to achieving your goals and success with simple yet impactful tools that children (and adults!) may remember and apply in their budding lives.
This story was clearly written by a loving, caring, and insightful author. Highly recommended - a keeper in any quality collection.
Enjoyable read
Lilo has a special plan for this summer and that is when he realizes that he won’t be home and there is no one to water his plants. In a simple premise, the author has told how Lilo comes up with a working plan after a lot of failures and plenty of lessons learnt along the way.
Beautiful story and excellent illustrations teaching both daily lessons for children and a little science.
Excellent read.
Selma Benkiran’s book “Inventor Adventure: A Self Watering Journey” is a marvel, introducing both scientific concepts and reaffirming mental fortitude as our young hero Lilo grapples with how to invent something that can safely water his precious plants during his three-week vacation in the exotic rainforest.
Lilo is a young boy whose grandparents shared their love of inventing and gardening with him, inspiring him to water, tend, and care for the vibrant green and interesting plants in his assorted clay pots. From the poky cactus to the eye catching Venus fly trap, each one is different and special to him! When Lilo learns he’ll be going on a vacation for three weeks, he decides he needs to invent something to care for his plants while he’s gone, which provides the bulk of this engrossing story.
“Inventor Adventure” is bursting with information about how to care for plants. The information is very well conveyed in bite sized portions, with bright colors and easy to read font. The theme of trying, no matter how many times or how many ways you fail, and building up a winning attitude is a wonderful message to imbue in young readers. The story arc is believable, practical, and keeps the audience interested from beginning to end as we witness Lilo’s emotional and technological growth as an inventor.
I appreciated that Lilo’s journey is made in community, showing children that it is not just okay but necessary to reach out to our friends, our community, and our mentors to seek help, brainstorm potential options, reaffirm ourselves when we’re down, and ultimately become successful based on those impartations.
This entire book is spectacular. I loved all of Valeria Loskant’s illustration work but wanted to point to one that really jumped out for me; on page 5 we see where Lilo gets his love and knowledge of inventing from—his grandfather! Not only is this a great family dynamic to have on the page, it captures the nitty gritty moment of focus and intensity involved in making something new.
The story champions the process of invention, acknowledging the individual frustrations and, yes, failures, that Lilo must navigate throughout the book. I love that it teaches kids that it is okay to fail, that failure is just one page in the story of your life, but the entire narrative is so much more than that one page, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.
“Inventor Adventure: A Self Watering Journey” by Selma Benkiran is a keeper, and I would recommend it to anyone with children who are scientifically minded. This would be a great one to read with grandparents, as they feature quite heavily in the story! What a fantastic takeaway to end the book on:
Dare to fail, and you will never fail to dare!
What a cute book! As a math and science educator, I really enjoyed and appreciated this book. Lilo is the main character in this story, and he discovers at the beginning of the book that instead of spending his summer with his grandparents, his family is going to be going on a month-long visit to the rainforest. He realizes pretty quickly that he needs to figure out a way to water his plants while they are gone, so he tries to invent a self-watering system for his plants.
As a whole, this story is about the process of inventing, and learning that you usually don't succeed the first time you try, but instead, you learn from the failures and step by step, you make progress until you succeed. However, what I particularly loved about this story was that Lilo didn't automatically know that, and that it took the encouragement and discussions with his family members and his friends to learn this lesson. I also like that his grandpa was a tinkerer, but he never tried solving Lilo's challenge for him. Instead, he asked him questions, encouraged his questions, and let Lilo experiment on his own.
The illustrations are really cute, and each step has a take-home message in bold in the text of the story, as well as highlighted in a banner at the bottom right of each page. They are also color coded with a green or blue bead depending on whether the lesson is a life lesson (green) or a science lesson (blue). At the end is an illustration with scenes from the book in green or blue circles and a reminder of each lesson, as well as reflection questions. These questions are good for children and adults alike.
This could be a great book for a teacher or parent to read to a young child, but it could also be used in elementary school for early readers. This would also be great for homeschooling. There's a website where you can request worksheet guides and activities.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
EXCERPT: . . . this summer was going to be epic.
'We're going to the rainforest for a month!' his dad announced.
Excitement bubbled inside Lilo as he imagined himself hiking through vibrant forests. He could already hear the chirps of exotic birds.
THE DILEMA
'But my plants!' A sudden worry hit him. 'Who will water them?'
ABOUT 'INVENTOR ADVENTURE': When Lilo realizes that his plants won’t be watered while he is on vacation, his inventive spirit takes over. He will simply invent a machine that will water them for him.
He attempts several experiments but encounters obstacles. Each setback holds an important science lesson that will bring him closer to his goal. More importantly, each setback offers a precious life lesson laying the building blocks for resilience, determination, and inner trust - qualities that many adults wish they learned sooner in life.
MY THOUGHTS: Really, the synopsis says it all.
I was enchanted as I read the meticulously illustrated Inventor Adventure. It encourages children to think for themselves, face problems head on, not be afraid to fail or to try again.
I gave this to my seven-year-old grandson to read and he loved it. I asked him what he liked best about the book, and he replied that it's okay to give up for a while on a problem; to go away and think and come back to it. And my seventeen-year-old grandson agreed, saying that it shows other ways to face up to problems other than abandoning them and destroying any work done in a temper and that it is important to realise that things don't have to be perfect all the time.
We voted unanimously on five stars for Inventor Adventure and are pleased that Lilo had a great time in the rainforest.
Little Lilo is worried. He has to go on a summer vacation and leaves his plants alone at home. But how can his precious plants survive without water? With some help from friends and family, Lilo comes up with an innovative idea for self-watering plants. But the route to success is filled with bumps and roadblocks.
The book seamlessly blends a multitude of lessons and doesn’t feel the least bit overwhelming. The science concepts are kept simple and easy. Lilo fails a few times before succeeding, which makes his progress authentic. Most importantly, he asks for advice and gets it from friends and family members.
Parents and teachers reading the book together will have much to think about. There are many points for discussion – determination, support without control, good advice, what to do with the advice, the need to take a break, etc. The book ends with a bead necklace that summarizes the lessons into neat beads (with different-colored borders). I love this idea.
The content is placed on each page and comes in short paragraphs. Important words are in bold. The illustrations are softer with more pastel shades. Not something I prefer much, but they suit the storyline perfectly. (Young) Readers will find it easy to focus on the text and its message instead of getting distracted by the artwork. And when a book combines science and life lessons, the text is a priority!
To summarize, Inventor Adventure is a delightful book with many lessons and a touch of fun. It is inspiring without being preachy and in the face. Grab a copy for your little ones. You won’t regret it.
Lilo likes inventing and gardening. When he learns he's going on vacation, he knows he has to invent a way to keep his plants watered the whole month. Following the scientific method is hard, but Lilo not only learns science but some life lessons along the way.
This book is doing well in a lot of areas. The cover is attractive and descriptive and made me really excited to read this book. The illustrations are original and expressive. The book has both a plot and a character arc, which allow enough space for Lilo to ask for advice and still act as the protagonist, solving his own problems and growing by his own volition. I even learned something from this book. My only real complaint is that it's quite long for a picture book. There's a lot of text on each page, and while older readers can persevere, this book definitely isn't for the younger range of the picture book audience. Most of the text is justified, so this isn't a big problem.
Overall, I'd recommend this book for mid-elementary-level readers who are curious and can be convinced to allow a little social-emotional learning in their adventures. This book would be fun as a classroom read and could inspire young explorers to discuss and implement their own scientific experiments.
Thank you to the author and BookSirens for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Well-intentioned, of course, but not a book I think many would actually love, and would choose to take from the shelf. Lilo, with a month in a jungle on the cards, is stuck with a poser for his inventive mind – his plants that his gran has made sure he loves will need watering while he's gone. What could possibly deliver the water they'll need? Well, apparently it will not work without lots of trial and error, pausing and starting again, seeing through the problem from different angles, and so on. Which at least means we get some science info – and some typical self-help messages of determination, respecting our failures and so on. Yes, the story breaks off now and again to address us directly, which only adds to the slight busy-ness of the page, what with dialogue, diagrams, and the narrative visuals of the plants, the experiments and the copious friends Lilo is lucky to have that care about all this.
All told, we're probably at that age not all that invested in Lilo or his specific problem, and while there are many books that combine the story with the messages-to-a-wannabe-brainbox, several of them offer more interest for the reader. These can only fully work if they're the audience's choice to read and learn from with pleasure, and I didn't quite see that enjoyment happening here.
What a wonderful book that touches on problem solving, science, learning, drive, and confidence. I enjoyed the wonderful illustrations and the messages.
Lilo becomes concerned about his plants when he learns his family will be taking a month-long vacation. He worries about how his plants will get water and comes up with several ideas for caring for his plants while he is away.
I enjoyed how the book showed Lilo's determination, his gumption, and drive to solve the watering problem. I thought the author did a great job showing Lilo's concern for his plants, his ingenuity, his disappointment when his experiments did not work as he planned, his hope, his pride when he made progress and his thoughtfulness. He faced some obstacles but always had his family's support and encouragement. Along the way, he learned some important messages which helped him not only grow as an inventor but also helped his self-confidence grow.
I loved the messages of never giving up, learning from failure, listening to others, working with others, and keeping an open mind. What great lessons for readers of all ages.
When Lilo realizes his beloved plants won’t be watered while he’s on vacation, he decides to simply invent a machine that will water them for him. The job is easier said than done and Lilo gets discouraged by the setbacks, but his family has his back and teaches him valuable lessons with each one.
As a plant lover who struggles to remember which plant needs watering and when - even when I see my plants everyday! - I empathize with Lilo, especially when you’ve kept certain plants alive for a long time.
His determination to find a solution, even when there were setbacks, were encouraging, even to this adult.
This book is filled with a lot of trial and errors and Selma Benkiran explains all the steps and thought processes through it all. One of my favorites was:
“Forget perfect. Start with good enough. An easy solution that you can have fun inventing. Then make it better and better.”
That’s just something I feel like adults need reminding of too.
Overall, this book is engaging and informative for all ages. Parents will have fun reading to their littles.
Great book! for kids but also with lessons for adults as well, I have yet to encounter a book that imparts such crucial insights on how to navigate and cope with failure. While most book teaches kids about success this book teaches about the journey to success one of which failure is a big part of.
"Inventor Adventure: A Self-Watering Journey" is a stellar picture book that effortlessly weaves science and pragmatic life lessons into an engaging narrative. The book's standout feature is its pragmatic approach to success, offering a refreshing perspective that diverges from typical children's literature. Instead of idealized scenarios, the story emphasizes perseverance, resilience, and learning from failure.
The Inventor's Adventure provides valuable lessons for children, young adults, and even humble adults who appreciate the wisdom found in children's stories. Absolutely a great and worthwhile read.
I was instantly drawn to the cover, I am so glad I followed my instinct. A book that seemingly talked about the adventure of a little inventor turned out to be much much much more than that. Lilo, the charming little boy goes through a roller coaster of emotions as he tries to solve his challenge: concern, frustration, disappointment, anger, wanting to give up, identifying what it means to feel overwhelmed, curiosity, excitement, courage, happiness, pride… the list goes on. It is simply fantastic. The emotions are raw and not sugarcoated which I love, but they are all addressed with so much warmth, support, guidance without interference. As a psychologist, this is a great handbook for parents and educators to talk about emotions through an engaging story as opposed to the way they are usually brought up without context.
Excellent book! I read it to my kids and nephews from the ages of 7-10year and they loved it.
The Author cleverly educates its reader on how to approach solving a difficult task from a practical and emotional standpoint. It provides children with the tools on how to deal with difficulty and to persevere, life will always throw challenges at us, but we take one step at a time believe in ourselves and do our best and our best is always good enough. With the immense pressure put on our children today to excel in everything they do, this book teaches them how to cope with such pressure, whether self-inflicted or imposed and achieve their ultimate success. I loved the illustrations and length of the book, reading it over a few days works best, as it gives the small reader time to digest the lessons learned on the inventors journey and relate it to their lives as they continue the story.
The surface level themes of this book: Science, inventiveness and love of nature are already wonderful. However, the deeper meaning found in the little hero's grappling with his feelings to overcome both internal and external obstacles is really where this book shines.
These lessons are things children desperately need to start learning young and parents would be happy to have such a beautiful story prompt valuable conversations with their children.
This is one book that I recommend parents read to their children even if a child is old enough to read it alone, because the lessons will compound the more they are talked about.
Reading 'Inventor Adventure' to my little nephew at bedtime was an absolute delight.
Lilo's journey through challenges and emotions served as an inspiring tale of determination and self-discovery not just for him but for me as well.
This book is not just a story; it's a valuable conversation starter between parents or teachers and children. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking an engaging and thought-provoking bedtime story.
This wonderful book explains simple scientific topics while also addressing big feelings, that most children are likely to experience, but which aren’t addressed till much later as adults. I think both adults and children should read this book as it as important messages that speak to everyone.
The thoughtful illustrations carry the story song beautifully as do the extra pointers to make you stop and think or question.
Lilo is a plant lover and understands the dilemma of going away and not being able to waters his plants! 🪴This book is about problem-solving, handling emotions and believing in yourself and never giving up. Lilo experiments with many ideas until he finally finds the one that isn't perfect, but is good enough 💦 I just might try Lilo's invention next time I go away!
A wonderful read with so many great life lessons as well as science lessons throughout. Lilo learns how to invent a self-watering plant setup for all his plants with minimal help from adults. He learns through his failed attempts and grows his ideas. His family helps him interpret the steps with life lessons. A great read for kids of upper elementary age and beyond.
Loved the connection between science & life lessons ~
This children’s book provides a great connections for young readers. A young boy learns how to solve his problem of watering his plants while he’s away. He uses adult advice, yet solves his own problem. I like how the author uses life and science lessons. Great read!
