This book is a blueprint if not a business bible for corporate employees transitioning to independent consulting or to existing independent consultants that need to pivot their business. Melisa provides pragmatic lessons from her own experience and that of the clients she has consulted with. As someone that is on this exact transition journey for the last 2 years I highly recommend this book!
She provides the theory, practice, examples and really digs into 'mindset' for all aspects of the business and self identity. This book is both a storyline and a reference. You'll might feel overwhelmed reading it but as she herself advices - take it step by step.
Melissa does not sugar coat things and clearly addresses the uncomfortable area's of independent consulting entrepreneurship: Doubt, Imposter syndrome, Money mindset, self confidence etc. And she offers formulaic ways to deal with or normalize. She offers insight into both the 'working in the business' such as lead generation, audience building portfolio, and keeping top of mind systems, and 'working on the business' systems also the vision, pricing financial, planning side of things.
I highly recommend this book to anyone considering building an independent consulting business or making the transition into one. Especially if you come from the typical corporate job. Make no mistake about the work and shift in thinking you need to do! This book provides a valuable roadmap, examples and challenging questions for you to work on as you go/are on your own journey to becoming a successful independent consultant.
I also highly recommend listening to the accompanying podcast, it's keeps things fresh and you can revisit chapters and topics when they are most relevant to you. The 'grow you independent consulting business' podcast is what got me interested in this book in the 1st place. My physical copy of the book has highlights on every or every other page - it's just a wealth of practical knowledge from someone that has carried the bag.
In full disclosure after listening to podcast, and buying the book I also opted for coaching from Melisa which propelled my independent consulting business forward. But in no way was i compensated for this review - this is purely my personal view/experience.
Of the hundreds of people who’ve followed my annual book lists over the past quarter century, I don’t expect many will pick up this book or even read this review. So I’ll keep this short.
Melisa Liberman is an independent consultant. She wrote this book to help other would-be independent consultants start their businesses. It’s full of great questions, frameworks, models, case studies, and anecdotes. Is it the best of its kind out there? I couldn’t say. But I appreciate that as I was developing and launching Barnes Creative Bank, reading Liberman’s book always gave me things to think about. New approaches, better questions, fresh ideas. Turning to this book, highlighting passages to revisit, and keeping notes on what I was reading put my head in the game and kept it there it ways that wouldn’t have been possible on my own.
READ IT IF: You want to be an independent consultant. If that’s you, search for it, and you'll find the free download.
