Dear Future by Jennifer Richter took me on an unexpected journey. Many of the poems felt like I was delving into a stream of thought but somehow that unsettling feeling felt like it was intentional and part of the theme. Given the personal nature of many of the poems, there were many times when I felt voyeuristic while reading Dear Future. There seemed to be a message about accepting the moment and not expecting more than the moment offered even when that moment was laden with expectations. Richter made me stop and re-evaluate my perception and understanding of both the poems and human nature more than once. Dear Future is an interesting if somewhat elusive book of poetry.
These poems comprise a deeply felt exploration of the joy, fear and enormous challenge and privilege of being a parent. Wicked-smart blend of cultural commentary and crackling language and a fearless, personal plunge into the poet's own heart, where she manages to touch both the universal and sublime. My copy is bristling with bookmarks and bent corners and well worn even after the first reading.
My third book for the 2024 Sealey Challenge! Wonderful poetry with cats, motherhood, the Richter Scale, and lots of different forms and styles. As with the two other books I read for the Sealey this year, there are humorous poems, heartbreaking poems, and poems that have both. Highly recommend!
